Transcript of Cranny Cares - YRDSB · Friday, June 2, 2017 Friday, June 30, 2017 School Holidays Family Day...
Each month MCES holds an assembly to celebrate what students and staff have
been working on in the classroom and how they have made a difference for
others in the school or our community. The concept of making a difference has
become what our students and staff refer to as ‘Cranny Cares!’
Each month, two classes are nominated to be creative and innovative with an initiative they feel will make our school or community a better place. This past month through Cranny Cares, Mrs. Kim and Ms. Scalia's grade 4 classes took a look at what it would be like to live in a developing country. They watched a documentary that informed them that many children and their families survive on $1/day or less. After a trip to Longos to see just what $1 would get us for the day, and realizing that it was next to impossible, we were inspired to do more.
The Grade 4’s titled their journey "The $1/day Campaign", and helped raise awareness through posters and daily announcements. MCES is proud to an-nounce that they were able to collect over 300 gently used books to be donat-ed to the Children's Book Bank in Toronto, as well as countless new school sup-plies to be donated to Books without Bounds. Way to go, Cranny!

Our school council meeting for the month of February will take place on:
Wednesday, February 15th, 2017
Thank you in advance for supporting our school council and all are welcome to attend.
We are now halfway through the school year. This is a good time to reflect on all that your child has learned
and to look at setting goals for the rest of the school year.
Our Board believes that student well-being and achievement go hand-in-hand. One of our goals set out in
the Board of Trustees’ Multi-Year Plan is to “continuously increase student achievement and well-being
through a culture of caring and learning.”
The Ministry of Education has recently identified four priorities for well-being: positive mental health, safe
and accepting schools, healthy schools, and equity and inclusive education. As a Board of Trustees, we will
continue to further work in all of these areas to support student well-being in line with these priorities.
There are many resources on the Board website to help support student well-being, including tips for talking
about mental health, managing stress, packing healthy lunches and addressing incidents of bullying.
Creating a healthy, safe and welcoming learning environment is key to helping our students reach their full
potential. All of us have an important role to play in creating an environment that enables our students to
thrive.

Grade 4 & 5—Freeze Kids Comic Art Workshop
On Wednesday, January 11th the grade 4’s and 5’s had the opportunity to attend a Freeze Kids Comic Art Workshop. The workshop was a lot of fun! While learning how to draw a monkey, Little Bo Peep, Jack Frost and Patrick from Sponge Bob we realized that we are artists. We never thought that we would be able to draw such amazing characters but with the help of the cartoon artist we did. We all worked quietly and concentrated on the step-by-step instructions, which helped everyone focus. We have learned that if you believe in yourself you can do something that you didn't know you could especially when you put your mind to it. Some of us were lucky enough to get the artists autograph. We can't wait to do this again in the future!

Chess Club
Michael Cranny’s chess club will be starting in February! Chess Club is an opportunity for students from grades 4-6 to experience the academic and social benefits of playing chess. Playing chess has long been known to correlate with improved academic performance, enhanced concentration and tenacity and higher self-esteem, through its emphasis on critical and strategic thinking skills. Club members will have the oppor-tunity to play older and younger opponents, and experience a variety of different skill levels and challenges. The goal is for all the club members to become stronger players and develop new strategies of playing the game.

Junior Volleyball
Congratulations to the Junior volleyball team for such a successful year! The team won Michael Cranny’s first ever Volleyball banner by earning an Areas championship.
They made it through to the Regionals tournament on February 2nd. It was amazing at all the progress we made over the practices where we got together with our friends and improved on our skills. We hope that next year students from grades 4,5 and 6 will join the junior team and our grade 6, 7 and 8 will join the in-termediate team. Thank you for supporting the Cobras and keep up the good work!
The MCES Cobras had another exciting year playing Junior Mixed Volleyball. We practiced many times a week, getting better each time while having fun and hanging out with friends. There were some major im-provements on our team comparing before and after. The cheering during areas was really encouraging and helped us play better. I’m really going to miss Junior Volleyball, but I hope the Grade 4’s and 5’s from this year’s team can give a big boost to the team next year. We also recommend parents to encourage their kids in grades 4 and 5 to try out next year for the Junior Team, and the Grade 6’s, 7’s and 8’s to try out for the Intermediate Teams. Also, you can help them by practicing at home or at the park. Volleyball helps with co-operation, strength and social skills which includes communication. Overall, this was a great year and we are really proud of everyone on the team for their hard work! Let’s Go Cobras! -Team Captain, Ella
