Biomechanical Test Materials are primarily used in testing of orthopaedic implants, instruments, and instrumentation as an alternative testing medium to human

cadaver bone. Our Biomechanical Test Materials offer uniform and consistent physical properties that eliminate the variability encountered when testing with human cadaver bone.

CELLULAR RIGID POLYURETHANE FOAM Cellular rigid polyurethane foam is used as an alternative test medium for human bone.

DESCRIPTION: The Cellular rigid polyurethane foam resembles that of cadaveric cancellous bone, however, the cell structure is 95% closed as compared to the open cell structure of cancellous bone. Our foam is available in a range of sizes and densities, from 0.12 to 0.32 g per cubic cm (7.5 to 20 lbs per cubic ft) and cell sizes ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 mm. *Contains e-glass fibers.

Solid rigid polyurethane foam is used as an alternative test medium for human cancellous bone. It does not replicate the structure of human bone, however, it does provide consistent material with properties in the range of human cancellous bone. Relevant mechanical properties for comparison to human cancellous bone depend on the test method. The ASTM F-1839-08 “Standard Specification for Rigid Polyurethane Foam for Use as a Standard Material for Testing Orthopaedic Devices and Instruments” states that “The uniformity and consistent properties of rigid polyurethane foam make it an ideal material for comparative testing of bone screws and other medical devices and instruments”.

DESCRIPTION: The structure of Open Cell Rigid Foam resembles that of human cancellous bone. The cell structure is over 95% open and the cell size is 1.5 to 2.5 mm. Suitable for a variety of applications that require an open celled structure, such as dynamic testing or cement injection.

OPEN CELL RIGID FOAM

CUSTOMAny of the materials used to model cancellous or cortical bone can be combined in various configurations to make uniform test blocks. Additional charges will apply. Custom shapes, including cylinders, half cylinders and prisms are also available with additional charges. Please contact us for pricing information when ordering foam in custom sizes and densities.

LAMINATED TEST BLOCKLaminated test blocks are primarily used as an alternative test medium for human cancellous and cortical bone.

DESCRIPTION: Laminated test blocks are manufactured to your specifications using any combination of solid rigid polyurethane foam, cellular rigid polyurethane foam and/or short fiber filled epoxy sheets. Standard laminated test blocks are 12 cm x 17 cm with a thickness based on your specified combination of block and sheet sizes. All blocks and sheets are laminated together with 0.64g/cc (40pcf) solid rigid polyurethane foam unless otherwise advised. Individual block tolerances apply.
