The man convicted in the Sep-tember 2011 abduction of Spar-wood three-year-old Kienan He-bert is back in court starting Mon-day.

Randall Hopley, 48, will be the subject of a dangerous offender hearing in Cranbrook Supreme Court October 7 to 11.

In March 2012, Hopley pleaded guilty to abduction of a child under 14, and break and enter with the intent to commit an offence.

A sentencing hearing on these charges was held in Cranbrook last July.

During that hearing, Crown prosecutor Lynal Doerksen asked the court to consider Hopley for dangerous offender status.

Rarely used, the dangerous of-fender designation sets apart of-fenders of violent or sexual crimes who are deemed likely to reoffend and whose release is considered a threat to society.

The dangerous offender hear-ing is a continuation of Hopley’s sentencing.

ceeding apace. The group has gathered about

one sixth of the petition signatures needed to force the decriminaliza-tion of marijuana to referendum.

A 90-day countdown began Monday, Sept. 9, for a petition campaign to decriminalize simple possession of marijuana in B.C. Volunteers for Sensible B.C. have until Dec. 5 to collect more than 400,000 signatures. This number represents 10 per cent of eligible voters in each of B.C.’s 85 electoral ridings. In Kootenay East, 3,100 sig-

natures are needed.“The campaign is well under-

way, “ said local organizer Barbara Kern. “Things are good. We’re get-ting noticed, we’re getting expo-sure.”

Kern said that province-wide, about one sixth of the signatures needed have been collected, and that’s true for Kootenay East as well. The riding includes Sparwood, Elko, Fernie, Baynes Lake, Gallo-way, Jaffray, Moyie, Wardner, Cran-brook and Yahk. Sensible BC has about 25 volunteers working this territory.

Pot petition campaign well underway, locations announced

The Art for Autism fundraiser aims to raise money to help those affected by Autism in the local area.

The fundraiser will benefit the EK Behaviour Intervention Pro-gram, a local non-profit agency that provides therapy for children with Autism.

Brandi Sims’ five-year-old son Riley is autistic and receives thera-py from the program.

“The program is amazing and has helped us exponentially,” said

Sims, who is also organizing the event. “Unfortunately, they’re fac-ing some rising operating costs, so we’re trying to raise some money to offset these costs, and help keep the kids with as many therapy hours as they can get.”

The fundraising event will be a gala at the Heritage Inn on Satur-day, Nov. 2 that will feature food, cake and drinks. There will be live entertainment from the likes of Bud Abbott, Leather Britches, Tom Bungay and Trena Spears.

COHEN, PIERRE LOUISIt is with great sadness we announce that Pierre passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 30th, 2013 at Foothills Hospital in Calgary.

Pierre was born on May 22, 1944 and came from a large family with numerous brothers and sisters. He worked most of his life as a professional driver in Penticton and most enjoyed his years as a school bus driver. He will be reunited with his loving wife, Shirley, to be together forever.

Aqamnik school students need the help of Cranbrook and area to get a new play-ground. Students at the school have put together a submission to the Aviva Community Funds Compe-tition in hopes that they can win funding to build the playground.

The Aqamnik school opened its new building last year.

“Unfortunately due to safety standards we were un-able to move our old play-ground to our new school yard,” said Lisa Costain, from the school. She noted that the students and teachers have banded together in a bid to get funding for a new playground.

“Mr. Lunan, our grade 2/3 teacher and our students have worked together to cre-ate a video submission to compete in the Aviva Com-munity Funds Competition.”

And in an effort to up the vote count, teachers Todd Lunan and Adam Stewart are participating in humiliation challenges set up by the stu-dents for every 50 votes the school gets.

To move on Aqamnik needs to be in the top 10 for their category to move on to

the next level of the competi-tion.

So Costain is requesting support from everybody in Aqamnik, Cranbrook and Kimberley by way of clicking the vote button on the com-petition’s website. The ad-dress is below.

This year, Aqamnik opened its new outdoor

classroom thanks to support from Cranbrook and District Community Foundations and the Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds Grant.

“We were able to pur-chase large boulders to be used as seats for the stu-dents,” she said. “The boul-ders were placed in a semi-circle, creating an out-

door classroom.” Aqamnik hopes the out-

door classroom gives stu-dents a place to learn about traditional language and cul-ture, while connecting with nature and the land. It will also be used as a meeting place for the After School Program/Summer Program and other groups in the com-

munity.Another grant helped to

bring life to the new school-yard.

“We received a grant from Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds to purchase native trees and plants, which will provide the students with shade and a beautiful play space,” she said. “We pur-

chased the plants from Tipi Native Plant Nursery, and the students were involved in the process from begin-ning to end.”

Students then put in the hard work. They dug holes, planted, moved bark mulch and are now caring for the plants.

“The experience provid-ed them with opportunities to learn about and connect with nature, while also learn-ing about plants that are na-tive to the area,” Costain said. “They also felt a great sense of accomplishment and pride in knowing that they made a significant contribu-tion to their school yard.”

On Saturday, Oct. 5, Zombie Walk 2013 will be making it’s way across downtown Cran-brook. Organizer Chad Engel-hardt is hoping to see Cran-brook’s zombie population come back to life for the event, which is also a fundraiser for the Cranbrook Food Bank.

There’s no registration, just bring a food item or donation for the food bank and your best zombie guise. Last year the event raised $1,500 worth of food donations.

The zombies will then make their way from 8th Avenue, down Baker Street, past the skatepark and over to Baker Park, where there will be music, refreshments and a zombie pag-eant.

“We’re going to have a best costume contest and a raffle in the park,” said Engelhardt. “We have a DJ coming for music and M&M Meats will be there.”

Last year there were about 150 people dressed up as zom-bies and walking down the streets, so this year Engelhardt is hoping to see as many or even

more people. There will also be a photo

booth set up so that you can capture the occasion.

“The weather’s changing, it’s going to be nice, so that helps,” he said, noting that the weather forecast is calling for sunshine and 14 degree weather.

The walk is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m., but Engelhardt sug-gests that people come down between 12:30 and 1 p.m. to reg-ister and get your raffle ticket. The meeting place is the parking lot behind Koko Beach on 8th Avenue.

Aqamnik students are excited about their new outdoor classroom. A new playground is next on the wish list.

“We will be featuring a silent art auction, with all pieces donated by artists and even some private col-lectors who have donated from their collections,” Sims said. “There are photo prints, paintings, jewelry, pottery ... any kind of art you can imagine.”

Sims said the featured auction collection will be one that was cre-ated specifically for this function.

“The pieces were a collaborative effort by the kids in the program, along with an art therapist and a local artist,” she said. “The pieces are amazing. There is one large central piece with four smaller pieces.”

and former resident of Cranbrook, who was involved in the boxing club and was a local deputy sheriff, will be the emcee.

The fundraising goal is $15,000 and tickets for the event will be $30. The event is Nov. 1 from 6 p.m. till 10 p.m.

The event has some local corpo-rate sponsors, but Sims said they are hoping to get some more.

years, the Banff Moun-tain Film and Book Fes-tival has showcased a selection of films from around the world during a nine-day festi-val that takes place an-nually in Banff.

A pre-selection com-mittee narrows down over 350 entries to ap-proximately 70 finalists. The selected films are then viewed by interna-tional film jury and shown to the public during the Festival, tak-ing place this year from Oct. 26 to Nov. 3.

Having a film chosen as a finalist for the pres-tigious festival is a big deal for any film maker, no matter his or her ex-perience. But just imag-ine what it means to an 18-year old from Kim-berley.

Selkirk grad Kalum Ko, who is currently studying Sciences at the University of British Co-lumbia, Okanagan, re-cently learned that his film “The Questions We Ask” has been chosen

as a finalist for this year’s Banff Mountain Film Festival.

The “Questions We Ask” follows another well-known Kimberley

adventurer, Bruce Kirk-by, as he crosses from Vancouver to Victoria on a paddle board.

“Adventure is curios-ity,” Kirkby says in the

film.Following Kirkby in a

kayak were Kimberley’s Dave Quinn, who took still photos, and Kalum, who filmed the entire journey, then created the film.

The 150-kilometre journey began in En-glish Bay, crossed the

Georgia Strait, and wound through the Gulf Islands before winding up in Victoria Harbour.

“ The trip was unfor-gettable,” said Kalum, whose resume includes work as DP, AC, Co-lourist, & Editor for Sherpas Cinema, Tour-ism Kimberley, St. Eu-

many other mountain film festivals in Europe and North America.”

Kalum knows he has been incredibly fortu-nate to have been nur-tured in his passion by people right here in Kimberley.

“I’ve been so lucky in my short film career to have so many incredi-ble mentors in film and outdoor pursuits, to name a few Kevin Shep-pit, Bruce Kirkby, Dave Quinn, Pat Bates, Jen Meens, Chris Ferguson, Pat Morrow and my parents.”

“The remarkable thing I always reflect on is not the individual tal-ents of people such as these but the communi-ty we live in,” said Kalum’s father Jeff Pew. Kalum has had unbe-lievable mentors from such a young age. It’s unreal. We’re so lucky. It’s an amazing commu-nity where if you have a passion, there’s always people who want to nurture/mentor it.”

On September 7, 2011, Kienan Hebert’s family reported him missing after they woke up and released the three-year-old son was missing from the home.

An amber alert was issued and emergency

responders from all over the East Kootenay rushed to Sparwood to take part in an extensive search for the little boy, who was wearing noth-ing but Scooby Doo boxer shorts when he went disappeared.

Four days later, an anonymous 911 caller reported that Kienan had been returned to his home. In the middle of the night, the little boy was found inside the house.

On September 13, 2011, a police sniffer

dog tracked Randall Hopley to a gravel pit in Crowsnest Lake, Alber-ta, near the abandoned cabin where he had kept Kienan for four days.

During Hopley’s sen-tencing hearing, the court heard that Hopley chose the Hebert home for his abduction plan because he noticed toys in the yard and found the front door unlocked. Hopley also said he re-turned the boy because he asked to go home.

The United States Justice Department was far from amused. They were awaiting the extra-dition from the Nether-lands of Daniel Spiegel-man — the prime sus-pect in a series of thefts from Columbia Univer-sity’s Rare Book and Manuscript Library.

Yet just before the Dutch authorities put Spiegelman on an air-plane, a story surfaced that profits from his crimes were used to fund the 1995 Oklahoma City Federal Building bombing. This halted all extradition proceedings. The Netherlands will not extradite a criminal to any country if he or she is facing the death pen-alty.

But was this story true? The FBI didn’t think so, and they should know. The Oklahoma bombing sparked the largest criminal investi-gation in American his-tory. There never was any connection found to Spiegelman. It appeared he leaked the story him-self, hoping to remain in Europe.

If this was his plan, the whole thing back-fired. Claiming to be re-sponsible for this hei-nous act of terrorism landed him in one the securest prisons in Eu-rope for an entire year, before being escorted back to the U.S. under heavily armed guards.

With his American lawyers, Spiegelman agreed to plead guilty with the hopes that his time served already in Europe would be taken into consideration. He was also counting on a very well-known fact: book theft is rarely pun-ished. “Even when a thief is caught red-hand-ed,” wrote Travis Mc-Dade, a legal expert in library theft, “he is treat-ed as less a major crimi-nal than a person who simply has overdue li-brary books.”

Unfortunately for Spiegelman, two obsta-cles stood in his way during his sentencing hearing. The first was Judge Louis Kaplan, who possessed one of the sharpest legal minds in the States. The second was one Spiegelman and his lawyers were un-prepared for.

Spiegelman’s de-fense strategy essentially came down to the belief

that what he had stolen was, in fact, no big deal. While collectors will pay handsomely for rare items, Columbia was not really been hurt by the thefts. Scholars still have access to photocopies and/or any reprints made of important his-torical work. To illus-trate this, they called at-tention to an item Spiegelman stole — an original letter written by George Washington. They offered that the let-ter “is not a work of art, like a Rembrandt. It is merely a letter — a mes-sage —and the color of the ink or the thickness of the paper does not add to the message.” The lawyer also questioned the use of the word ‘rare’ itself, a term of library jargon which has no real meaning in the real world.

Somewhat rhetori-cally, Judge Kaplan won-dered if the existence of millions and millions of paintings existing today meant the Mona Lisa no longer mattered.

But the largest blow came from Jean Ashton, the chief librarian of Co-lumbia’s Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Wearing white cotton gloves, Ashton unfurled a scroll, stretching it across the entire court-room. This was a papal bull, dating from 1262. Ashton was about to ed-ucate the entire court-room that Spiegelman’s thefts were, indeed, a big deal. Her testimony took the defense team com-pletely off guard.

But then there was a suicide attempt, a prison break, the arrest of Spiegleman’s lawyer, and one more bizarre twist in this story.

Locations to sign the petition in Cranbrook are in place, Kern said. The petition can be signed at the Cranbrook Farmer’s Market on Sat-urdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (there are only two Saturday markets left in the season); at Hemp City/Dr. Love (121A 6th Street North), Wednes-days and Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and Kootenay Pawnbrokers (2420 30th Avenue North).

Kern said there are more locations being set up, which will be an-nounced at a later date.

The same sort of campaign, under the same laws, was used

three years ago to force repeal of the harmo-nized sales tax. The province-wide cam-paign is led by long-time marijuana legal-ization advocate Dana Larsen.

Kern said that Cran-brook can also expect a visit from the cam-paign’s “Canna-bus.”

Larsen has proposed that B.C. go around the federal prohibition with a “Sensible Policing Act” that would disallow the use of B.C. police re-sources to prosecute simple possession of small amounts of pot by adults.

Marijuana posses-sion cases still account for 60 per cent of drug violation reports to po-lice in B.C., according to Statistics Canada figures from 2012. But the num-ber of cases declined 10 per cent from 2011.

It was an ugly scene on Tuesday night in Montreal, as George Par-ros was taken off the ice via stretch-

er after smacking his face on the ice during a fight with Colton Orr.

Parros, an enforcer for the Habs, fell in mid-swing after Orr, a defenceman for the Maple Leafs, making contact with his chin on the ice and sustaining a concus-sion.

It was their second tussle of the night.

Hockey is a game of skill and fighting should be eliminated, or at least, penalized more heavily than sitting in a box for five minutes.

Indeed, a few high-profile general man-agers such as Steve Yzerman (Tampa Bay Lightning), Ray Shero (Pittsburgh Pen-guins) and Jim Rutherford (Carolina Hurri-canes) came forward on Wedensday say-ing it’s time to eliminate fighting.

Fighting in hockey is nothing more than a spectacle and serves as a cathartic re-lease of emotion that would be better served by actually playing the game.

Players themselves will argue other-wise, and hold on to fighting as a deterrent and a way to mete out pugilistic justice, which is completely understandable.

However, scenes like what happened at the Bell Centre on Tuesday night are a re-minder of why it should be banned.

“You never want to see a guy get hurt

like that. It’s a scary situation,” Orr said in a post-game interview with the Montreal media.

Intentional or not, Parros did get hurt, and was diagnosed with a concussion.

Concussions have moved to the front of injury-related concerns in professional sports, especially in the NFL, which recently settled a $765 million lawsuit with 4,500 former players over concus-sion-related issues.

Sidney Crosby, arguably one of the best players currently in the NHL, struggled with concussion-like symptoms after a hit to the head, missing the end of the 2011 season and sitting out for most of the 2012 campaign.

The risk of sustaining a concussion or serious injury from one singular fight is relatively rare. It wasn’t a fist that injured Parros, it was his head colliding with the ice when he fell down.

However, like with the NFL, it’s the re-peated head trauma over time that exacer-bates the damage and makes it more se-vere.

It’s easy for people to be armchair crit-ics about the role of fighting in hockey, but ultimately, the players will be the ones de-ciding whether or not to go at it during a game.

The rules can ban fighting, but that won’t stop someone from dropping the gloves when a teammate gets a dirty hit

from behind into the boards with no pen-alty called.

At the local level, the KIJHL has tight-ened up the rules on fighting. Like seasons past, offenders get a five-minute major and game misconduct. However, the league is tracking repeat offenders, and suspensions will follow — three fights is one game, four fights is two games, five fights is three games, and sixth fights is an indefinite sus-pension.

Also, both the offending player and team coach will be ejected after a team’s second fight in one game.

At the professional level, the role of the enforcer has diminished, but it’s still there. After Edmonton Oilers forward Sam Gag-ner broke his jaw while on the receiving end of a slash by Zack Kassian of the Van-couver Canucks, the former team went out and acquired Steve MacIntyre to add some physical intimidation to the roster.

It’s going to take a lot to stop fighting cold-turkey in hockey without some push-back from those who still see it as a neces-sary part of the game, but a ban will hope-fully cut down on the incidences like what we saw in Montreal.

But even if an outright ban isn’t appeal-ing to the players, maybe the league can look at using punishment for fighting as a deterrent to eliminate it from the game.

Fighting in hockey is a worn-out, dangerous ‘tradition’ and it is time to end it

In a wonderful headline, church histori-an Martin E. Marty wrote, “Pope Francis means it!”It seems so! This summer, at the World

Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, Pope Francis told a group of young Argentine pilgrims, “I want to tell you something. What is it that I expect as a consequence of World Youth Day? I want a mess. We knew that in Rio there would be great disorder, but I want trouble in the dioceses!” he said, speaking off the cuff in his native Spanish. “I want to see the church get closer to the people. I want to get rid of clericalism, the mundane, this closing ourselves off within ourselves, in our parishes, schools or struc-tures. Because these need to get out!”

More recently, Pope Francis rocked the Catholic Church and surprised the wider world with a free–ranging interview that charted a course away from an institution that’s “obsessed” with a few sexual and moral issues and toward one that is more pastoral, less clerical and less doctrinaire.

Pope Francis is sketching out a vision for the church, a broad, inclusive vision. But the question that remains unanswered is whether he can make that vision a reality.

He faces a great deal of opposition in the Roman Catholic Church. There are many influential bishops and others in the Curia who are opposed to any sense of renewal or change. Part of what Pope Francis needs is

time, enough time to appoint bishops who share his views, and who will in turn en-courage like–minded priests and seminari-ans. In a very real sense, the changes the Pope envisions will take a generation or more.

Some of the more conservative bishops have spoken about their un-happiness with the Pope. Bish-ops in Rhode Island and Philadephia have expressed disappointment that the Pope hasn’t spoken more about abortion.

I have been watching with growing excitement ever since he was elected. From the very beginning, he set a different tone. Here is a humble man, who lives in a very modest apartment, with few of the perks his predecessor seemed to love. He reaches out the people, and seems to be most comfortable as he wades in among the crowds, or washing the feet of imprisoned youths.

So far, his comments have all been in the context of interviews. That is to say, this is not formal church teaching. His com-ments don’t have the kind of weight that a long–thought–out encyclical would have. But he knows that there will be a huge re-sponse to what he has said. He knows that his thoughts will be broadcast around the globe.

He will face strong opposition as he tries to implement his vision. While I am not a Roman Catholic, I have appreciated many

modern papal statements, particularly those dealing with war and peace, and so-cial justice. Those issues are important to Pope Francis as well, but now he’d like equal time for other issues.

He knows that the church must wear a different face if it is to invite its own lapsed members or new people into the church. He also knows that expressions of authority are not the best way to change attitudes. He knows the power of symbol, and he has shown natural ways of dealing with people, inviting them in with a personal warmth.

His statements won’t change church doctrine, but it does set a fresh new tone. According to a recent survey, Pope Francis’ words and gestures have made him wildly popular among American Roman Catho-lics.

He has sent shock waves into the Roman Catholic Church. But, as he said to the young pilgrims from Argentina, it is time for the church to get closer to people. It may get messy. It probably will. But often, such a mess is the playground of the divine.

The bottom line is that I join those who cheer. We are seeing a Pope who wants the church to connect with the people on the street, speaking good news in a world which desperately needs to hear such good news. Whatever else may or may not hap-pen, so far his papacy shows the promise of excitement, revision, and hope.

Realizing the City’s future rests on on engaged individuals and organizational leaders from across diverse sectors in the community, it’s believed that the City of Kimberley allocated approximately $80,000 to incubate a collaborative infra-structure to develop a Kimberley City “Brand”.

Whilst there’s been nothing new to share in the ensuing 12 months or so, just yet, there’s much on-going work, right now, to synergize and finely tune the tools that will enhance an ability to communi-cate a vibrantly connected, cross-genera-tional structural awareness to the Kimber-ley community.

Refracting and distilling a great brand name for the Kimberley city is an extreme-ly complex and unavoidably long-range social project. By thinking outside the box, the project aims to showcase everyone singing from the same song sheet at the

end of the day, 24/7, with a shared agenda and a coherent voice.

Initially, much on the ground group and individual fact-time was involved with a variety of diverse stakeholders. Carefully prepared PowerPoint presentations, unique to Kimberley’s dynamic and its sit-uational awareness, were an integral ele-ment in empowering and kickstarting two-way conversations preparatory to record-ing a graduated and complete community narrative which is still in the process of being brought to the table.

Whilst nothing appears to be happen-ing any time soon, ongoing research in the field is emerging with a complete snap-shot, in time, of the community’s wellness, an holistic pattern of its cultural mores, its multifaceted identities and its aspirational memes.

While much field evidence is still in the process of being forensically eyeballed, steps are also being taken to develop com-plex, groundbreaking computer modelling

algorithms to effectively data mine and showcase the Kimberley result for out-comes otherwise unrecognizable to the human eye.

Aiding the core competencies of aggre-gating such a client centric $90,000 pro-cess, someone is kindly volunteering lever-age to peel back the onion and push for-ward the Kimberley branding envelope right now.

In creating this paradigm shift, there’s a suggestion that just one simple phrase stands out with an environmentally sus-tainable footprint. The phrase encapsu-lates the feathery and downy-white land-scape of Kimberley’s winter wonderland. It also incorporates the gentleness of the re-maining three seasons as well as the un-witting generosity of its people and the lingering impression this gives to the out-side world: Kimberley – the Soft Touch.

There’s no place like home. Hudson Elynuik will be returning to

Calgary when the Kootenay Ice take on the HItmen on Friday night, in the first part of a home and home series this weekend.

Elynuik, a 15-year-old forward, is push-ing for a full-time spot on the team this year after spending the end of the season and playoffs with the club last year.

It will be special to step out onto the ice in the Saddledome, after growing up and watching the Hitmen and the Flames, where he will have an audience that in-cludes family and friends.

“For sure it’s special,” said Elynuik. “Friends, family, all your relatives, it’s al-ways very special and very surreal having them there to support you.”

Elynuik has grown up in the rink, both on and off the ice as a player and spectator by following the Hitmen and the Flames.

His dad, Pat Elynuik, is a retired NHLer, who played most of his professional ca-reer with the Winnipeg Jets in the 1990s.

“I’ve been in Calgary for eight years and got a pretty good look at the Hitmen for a while,” said Elynuik, “had season tickets to the Calgary Flames for a while and my dad was in the alumni for the Flames and got to go downstairs.

“We knew Tony Amonte and he gave us a very good experience around the room with the Flames and overall, it was just a great way to grow up.”

Fellow Ice teammates Matt Alfaro, Clint Filbrandt and Matt Thomas also hail from Cowtown

After Friday night’s tilt, the Hitmen will come down to Cranbrook for a rematch on Saturday night at Western Financial Place.

The Hitmen are expected to return an-other tough team this year after making a

run to the Eastern Conference final in the post-season, where they took the Edmon-ton Oil Kings to seven games.

There are many weapons in their arse-nal, but one name that sticks out is Jake Virtanen, a 17-year-old who is heading into his draft year and is projected to be a top pick.

Virtanen tallied 16 goals and 18 assists last year for 34 points. He also captured a gold medal with Team Canada at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in August.

Virtanen just so happens to be close to the family of Ice goaltender Mackenzie Skapski, as they both live in the same city of Abbotsford, B.C.

“He’s a really hard-working kid, down to earth,” said Skapski. “He always comes over and plays road hockey with us and other activities, so we kind of know him well, me and my brother [Mitch Skapski].

“…He’s a very well-rounded player and has a lot of skill. Obviously, he’s a very fast player—probably one of the fastest in the Western Hockey League. He’s very good with the puck, and very talented.

“He’s a big body, and if you give him room, he’ll capitalize with it.”

American Invasion

American excursions are rare for the Kootenay Ice, as the team heads down for a swing through the U.S. Division once every two years. On the off-years, it’s the U.S. division teams that come up to Cran-brook, but because of the geographical proximity of Spokane, the Ice and the Chiefs see each other more often during the season.

The Ice will play host to their first American squad on Sunday when the Se-attle Thunderbirds come to town.

However, there is one player on the

Kootenay roster who has seen the T-Birds in action many times over the last couple years.

Ryan Chynoweth, who has spent the last two years in the U.S. Division with the Everett Silvertips and the Tri-City Ameri-cans, was repatriated back to Canada fol-lowing a trade to the Ice last week.

“They’re a big, strong team,” said Chynoweth. “They’re normally four lines deep and they play all four lines. From experience, they’re always very physical and you just got to be smart against them.

“Their defencemen are pretty big and maybe not the fastest, so just get pucks behind them and try to work them down there.”

Chynoweth, who was picked up from the Americans by Kootenay in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2014 WHL Ban-tam Draft, is still adjusting to his new sur-roundings, but didn’t hesitate to make an impression last weekend, with a fight and an assist against the ‘Canes and Pats.

“Anything I can do to help—if it’s a fight or a hit or anything to keep the puck out of the net,” said Chynoweth. “It was pretty nerve-wracking coming and playing the first couple gams so hopefully it’ll go away here and just get down to playing hockey.”

Even though Chynoweth grew up watching the Ice, which is managed by his father, Jeff, he is still stepping into a dress-ing room with some unfamiliar faces and is searching for his role on the team.

“It’s never easy coming in as the new guy, but the guys have been really good to me and I knew a couple of guys on the team so that helps and it’s been nice get-ting to know everyone.”

NHL slaps Roy with big ne after outburst in coaching

been fined $10,000 by the NHL on Thursday for his emotional outburst the night before in his Colorado Avalanche coaching debut.

Soon after the final horn of a 6-1 win, Roy yelled at Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau and then pound-ed on the glass partition separating the two bench-es. Roy was livid over a late knee-to-knee hit on rookie Nathan MacKinnon.

Roy said he will “always defend my players.”The animated Hall of Fame goalie was far from

pleased with Boudreau, who took exception to Roy talking to his players and referees. Roy said: “What Boudreau said was all lies. ... When you’re lying, this is classless.”

Captain Gabriel Landeskog missed practice Thursday with a leg injury. Roy said he’s being ex-amined by a doctor.

Agent says former CFL star signs with NFL team

NEW ORLEANS - It didn’t take Chris Williams long to land in the NFL.

The wide receiver, who negotiated his release from the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger Cats this week, has signed a contract with the New Orleans Saints, his agent said Thursday.

Dan Vertlieb, Williams’ Vancouver-based agent, told The Canadian Press that Williams is headed to New Orleans.

On Wednesday, Williams and the Ticats reached an agreement to allow CFL’s top special-teams play-er last year to pursue opportunities in the NFL.

Contract details weren’t immediately available, but the 25-year-old Williams stands to make much more than the $48,000 base salary he was scheduled to earn this season in Hamilton.

The NFL’s 2013 minimum salary is $405,000.Under terms of the deal with Hamilton, should

Williams return to the CFL either this season or next, it must be with the Ticats. However, given that Williams received multiple NFL offers moments after being free to entertain them, it’s doubtful he’ll be back in Canada anytime soon.

The Mount Baker Wild will be hitting the pitch this weekend as the senior boys soccer squad hosts their home tournament at the school field and Moir Park.

Nine other teams are making the trek to the Key City, including the Wild’s regional ri-vals from L.V. Rogers Secondary, which rep-resents Nelson.

The Wild have only been in action in one tournament so far this season in Creston, but it was relatively suc-cessful with a berth in the final against the Nelson squad, where they fell 1-0 in penalty kicks.

“They were good,” said Wild fullback Ryan Grady, on the Nelson squad. “I think we got in their heads fast, which helped us a lot, and we figured that out pretty fast, which was nice, and they were just getting really frustrat-

ed.“It was good, it was

nice to have control at first, of everything, but then eventually they started playing us too, and it was pretty back-and-forth the whole game.”

There are quite a few players in Grade 12 that are starting on the team, however, the ros-ter also features some younger talent and has some international fla-vour with some ex-change students.

“For the first tour-nament of the year, just getting to know all the players and stuff, it worked out pretty good,” said Grady, who is a Grade 12 student. “Everyone communi-

cated pretty well, there was lots of talking and, for having different countries and things coming together, it was pretty good.”

It was the first time the team got to see themselves as a com-plete unit out on the field, and everyone seemed to do their part, said Grady.

“For the most part, everyone’s skill is up to date and no one really quit on you, everyone went as hard as they could,” Grady said. “They just tried as hard as they could and never gave up on the team, which was really help-ful and everyone was working well together.”

Along with Nelson, the Wild are hosting other teams such as the Selkirk Storm out of Kimberley and squads from Invermere, Kalis-pell, Creston, Fernie and Nakusp.

“We’re expecting to do pretty good, for the most part,” said Grady. “Coming off the Cres-

Kootenaians soak up Emmy experienceKirsten Hildebr and

When the golden statues were handed out earlier this week, local talents Robert Neufeld and Adham Shaikh didn’t get their Emmy Awards. But Shaikh is still glowing about the experience.

The duo was up for Outstanding Music and Sound for their work on

the National Geograph-ic project Untamed Americas, a four-part series.

Shaikh said he was a “wee-bit sad” about not winning the prestigious award but relished in the adventure that the Emmys provided.

“There’s always that moment of deflation,” he said, “but to even be included in this

slice of reality has been a trip. It’s been an amazing journey since the first demo cue I wrote to try and get on the project.”

Shaikh made his first trip to New York City with the help of Koote-nay folks wanting to see the independent artists benefit from schmooz-ing in the Big Apple — in turn benefitting the Nel-

son area.“I have enjoyed my-

self. Met lots of interest-ing people,” Shaikh told the Star. He expressed gratitude for the gener-osity that got him there.

BC filmmakers Vel-crow Ripper, who Shaikh worked with on Fierce Light, and Nova Ami toured the Slocan Valley-based composer, producer and DJ around

the city. Wednesday night he planned to see his “good buddy” Nico-demus NYC do a private show with Kruder of Kruder and Dormeister fame.

This year, HBO’s In Tahrir Square won the Emmy for Outstanding Music and Sound.

“The film that won was a more journalistic piece which was lighter

on music but had some great location sound from Tahrir Square,” Neufeld described.

Of Emmy night Neufeld said, “We had a fun evening. It was an honour to be nominat-ed.”

Shaikh said of his and Neufeld’s trip to the Emmys, “really we are just getting warmed up.”

Of returning home to the Kootenays he said, “Now back to chopping wood and carrying water.”

Trekker completes 8,000-kilometre journey

Trekker John Davis completed his 8,000km self-powered journey near Fernie this week as he arrived on mountain bike at the Morrissey Bridge beside the site of the 400-year-old black cottonwoods. Friends and supporters wel-comed Davis on this banner day.

Davis began his jour-ney on January 25 as he left the North Jaguar Re-serve in Senora, Mexico beginning his historic conservation trek from Mexico to Canada.

Davis has been hik-ing, biking and paddling for nine months along the spine of the conti-nent asking people to sign a petition that says ’YES to protecting Wild-life Habitat Corridors’.

Davis completed the final stretch of his feat on mountain bike ac-companied by Ed George, a cinematogra-pher who has travelled with Davis for half of the distance, Dave Hadden, director of Headwaters Montana, and Karsten Heuer, president of Yel-lowstone to Yukon Con-servation Initiative.

Kaslo village council has given the go ahead to a couple wanting to bring cheetahs to the community — but the cheetahs may not come.

Earl Pfeifer and Carol Plato own two of the endangered spe-cies that now live with them at their home near Toronto. In late June, they approached the community of Kaslo about bringing Robin and Annie with them to live at Kane Manor, their second home, in a conserva-tion efffort with the benefit of tourism.

Mayor Greg Lay said council has granted ap-proval in principle to the cheetah proposal sub-ject to the proper certifi-cation and community support.

Needing the village’s

endorsement to gain the necessary permits to proceed, the endeav-our intended to offer educational and out-reach programs from their home which would be transformed to safely house the South African cats.

Since council’s ap-proval was granted at their September 24 meeting, it was learned that Pfeifter and Plato are instead moving their project to Innisfail, Al-berta.

There, the Discovery Wildlife Park houses over 40 species of or-phaned animals on a 90-acre property.

Plato said that the change of venue is due to regulatory hoops they must jump through to bring the cats to BC.

About World Teachers’ DayWorld Teachers’ Day: why the 5 of October?

In 1994, UNESCO proclaimed 5 October World Teachers’ Day, in celebration of the great step made for teachers in 1966 when a special intergovernmental conference convened by UNESCO in Paris in cooperation with the ILO adopted the ILO/UNESCO Recommen-dation concerning the Status of Teachers.

This recommendation sets forth the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and inter-national standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employ-ment, teaching and learning conditions. It also contains many recommendations for teachers’ participation in educational deci-sions through consul-tation and negotiation with educational authorities. Since its adoption, the Recom-mendation has been considered an import-ant set of guidelines to promote teachers’ status in the interest of quality education.

In addition 5 October celebrates the adop-tion by the UNESCO General Conference in 1997 of the UNES-CO Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel.

Why a day for teach-ers?

World Teachers’ Day held annually on 5 October is a UNESCO initiative, a day de-voted to appreciating, assessing, and improv-ing the educators of the world. The real point is to provide a time to look at and address issues pertaining to teachers. Strangely one of the most central, vital professionals to society does not receive the respect it deserves in some parts of the world.

WTD is a natural extension of UNESCO’s

all year round work of promoting teach-ers, ensuring that this profession, so vital to the healthy function-ing of society, is itself “healthy”. Teachers are a normative indicator of social health.

Why an international day, doesn’t each coun-try have very specific issues?

Teachers are producing global citizens, so they are global teachers, who need to situate their ad-vances on a global level.

WTD is an opportunity to rethink national issues facing teachers from an international perspective, to bench-mark progress made by national teachers in a global context. UNESCO provides the best global context to address and exchange ideas across borders.

What can I do?

Everyone can help by celebrating the pro-fession, by generating awareness about teach-er issues, by ensuring

that teacher respect is part of the natural order of things. Take the opportunity of the day to discuss, compare, learn, argue, share and improve.

Dear Annie: I love my husband, but I don’t like him anymore. He is disrespectful to me because I am overweight, and he has been after me for years to lose the extra pounds. He uses filthy language when he speaks to me and says it’s OK because I am disrespect-ing him by not losing weight. I’m 58 years old, have back problems, wear a size 8 and could stand to lose a good 15 pounds. I am an emotional eater. I lose the weight and then gain it back. But he acts as if I am 50 pounds overweight. Meanwhile, he is tall, thin, has a small beer belly and takes medication for his high cholesterol. My cho-lesterol is fine. I’ve asked him to go with me for counsel-ing, but he won’t. I went alone years ago, but don’t see anything changing if he won’t go. This is so childish. He is so hateful of anyone who is overweight. I can’t take it anymore. I’m getting more depressed and have been seriously thinking of divorce. I want to leave and never come back. Any suggestions? -- Any Name in Any City Dear Any Name: Your husband has be-come a bully and a verbal abuser. If he has an ounce of sense, he would know that this is not an effective way to get you (or anyone) to change your behavior. It’s simply a way for him to vent, and you are the target of his frustrations. Tell your husband you are ready to walk and that counseling may be the last chance the two of you have to work things out. If he still refuses, talk to a counselor on your own and figure out what you want from your marriage and whether it’s too late to save it. Dear Annie: I have been dear friends with “Nancy” for 10 years. I am worried about her mental health. Nancy has had many issues with depres-sion. But in the past three months, her mother died unexpectedly, and then her mother’s house burned down. Her brother and stepfather were still living there. They are now living in Nancy’s tiny apartment. Her brother is a drug addict with a history of violent behavior. All of this is taking a toll on her, and I can easily see her slipping back into depression. Can you tell me of any free or low-cost plac-es where she can go? She has no insurance and barely makes ends meet. -- Concerned Friend in Kentucky Dear Friend: We’ve printed this list before, but it bears repeating: Free and low-cost help is available through local churches, graduate school counseling departments, medical school psychology departments, United Way, the YMCA, YWCA, the Samari-tan Institute (samaritaninstitute.org), NAMI (nami.org), and through support groups such as the Depression and Bipolar Alliance (dbsalliance.org) and the Abraham Low Self-Help Systems (lowselfhelpsystems.org). Dear Annie: As a breast cancer advocate, as well as being a stage IV breast cancer pa-tient, I am concerned about the letter from “Torn Sister,” who says her older sister, “Jo-hanna,” is using a breast cancer diagnosis to manipulate her family into buying her things. Receiving a diagnosis of a serious breast cancer, such as inflammatory breast cancer, is quite naturally upsetting. But expecting large sums of money from family members is unreasonable and something I’ve never heard of a cancer patient doing. Frankly, I wonder whether “Johanna” actually has cancer. I would not take her word for it. “Torn” could offer to go with her to an ap-pointment with her oncologist or to a che-motherapy treatment. Ryan Walter Duffy James Hardie

It is with breaking hearts that we announce the sudden passing on September 25th of Ryan, our beautiful son, brother, nephew, grandson, cousin and friend.

Ryan was born December 28, 1982 to Toni O’Keeffe and Derek Hardie, at Burnaby General Hospital, to great fanfare and

excitement as the first grandchild to both the Hardie and O’Keeffe families. Ryan lived in Surrey for 9 years before moving to Cranbrook with his mom Toni, and brother Korey.

He had many happy memories in Cranbrook; sledding at Idelwild Park, hiking Lakit Lookout, riding for hours on his dirt bike and camping at Moyie and Jim Smith Lake. He was a strong athlete enjoying baseball, basketball, swimming, biking and jogging. He was a great chess player and enjoyed many hours playing with his dad Derek, Grandpa Walter and his uncles.

As the eldest of 15 grandchildren, Ryan was the “Leader of the Pack” and he loved hanging out with his brother and cousins, enjoying many happy road trips, camping trips and holidays with his big extended family.

In his teens he lived with Derek in several different communities and always looked forward to exploring each new town especially the nature trails, lakes and rivers. Ryan grew into a big (6’3”), strong, young man. In his twenties he moved back to the mainland where he worked in construction which he was well suited for. He enjoyed being part of the crew and was always willing to lend a hand to others on the jobsite. His friends there will remember him for his enormous strength, his great sense of humour and infectious laugh.

Ryan was a “gentle giant” with a huge heart, a deep love of nature and a love for animals. He was a great listener and had great compassion for those less fortunate. He was always interested in learning more about the world; watching documentaries, watching the late night news with Grandma Monica and reading in the library.

He was an avid gamer and known internationally in the “Quake” community as “FAF Bono” and held several world records. Derek was his best friend and they shared a love of movies. He had recently taken up photography and his last pictures were taken atop the mountains around Squamish.

Ryan is survived by mom Toni, dad Derek, step-dad Rob, brother Korey, Grandma Monica, Grandma Lalla, Grandpa Jim, and dozens of aunts, uncles and cousins. He is pre-deceased by Grandpa Walter who will welcome Ryan’s beautiful soul to be with him.

A celebration of Ryan’s life will take place Sunday Oct 6th, 1pm, Tynehead Room 1, Sheraton Guildford Hotel, 15269 104th Ave - Surrey BC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local SPCA in Ryan’s name. Condolences to the family can be sent to [email protected]
