What do you do when you receive bad news? What do you do when your dreams are crushed? At the nearness of Jesus, St. John the Baptist, danced for joy even before he was born. St. John the Baptist inaugurated our Lord’s ministry by Baptism in the Jordan river. When Jesus received the news of his death because Herod wanted to satisfy the wishes of a child, imagine the emotions racing through His mind. If only Jesus had been there to stop the senseless violence. That thought must have been in His mind when He got into a boat and withdrew to a secluded place to be by Himself. But after Jesus arrived at that place, did He find the solitude He was looking for? No, not at all. A crowd of 5,000 waited for Him, people who were there not to comfort Him in His anguish, nor to mourn with Him, but rather, to ask Him to attend to their personal needs, to cure them, and to hear Him speak. What did Jesus do? “His heart was moved with pity for them, and He cured their sick.” The blessing to know exactly what to do, came from our Lord’s dedication to prayer. Prayer is not simply stating to God what we want, but a way that we open ourselves to Him and discern what He is willing us to do. This takes time, patience and being comfortable in solitude. Even though His heart was broken, by developing this religious practice, Jesus was able to see clearly what was important at that moment. This is good advice for us. The past months have been hard on us. A pandemic, civil unrest and a widening political divide have us looking for moments of peace and rest so that we can make sense of what is happening around us. Jesus is telling us that our daily prayers and quiet times of reflection and solitude are as important for our well-being as daily exercise and healthy eating is for our bodies. Focused time spent in prayer with God can strengthen our resolve and provide us with guideposts to follow when we are faced with difficult days. We can pray for strength and courage to endure the hardships. Most of all, we can pray to not let fear and anger push our love for each other out of our hearts. So, what should you do when you receive bad news?

Jesus said, “Fear is useless, what is needed is trust.”
