JACOB Rigoni was six yearsold and 140cm tall – 25cmabove the average – whenhis love of basketball began.
“I got my first hoop forChristmas and I developed alove for the game fromthen,” Jacob, 17, says.
“From then on, I was outthere, shooting hoops, play-ing basketball on most days.
“I just love the competi-tive nature of basketball andthe different skills requiredto be successful.”
The Year 12 Mercedes Col-lege student’s dedicationand determination hashelped him rise in the sport.
Last year, he was selectedin the Pacific School Games’secondary schoolboys bas-ketball team representingSA and was named the MostValuable Player.
At 196cm, the small for-ward was then part of thebronze medal winning SAteam at the Australianunder-20 Championships inFebruary.
He was one of the top fivescorers, ending the tourna-ment with 35 points.
Then, in March, Jacobrepresented Australia at theunder-18 Albert SchweitzerTournament in Mannheim,Germany.
The Craigburn Farm teen-ager has been named this
month’s eastern winner inthe boys’ secondary catego-ry of Messenger CommunityNews’s School SportsAwards.
“It is a great honour and Iam so thankful for everyonewho has helped me along theway,” Jacob says.
Jacob, who plays for SturtSabres in the SA PremierLeague, admits jugglingYear 12 with training 20hours a week – 10 hours withhis club and 10 by himself –is challenging. But he is de-termined to play profession-ally in the US.
“Hopefully by the end ofthis year, I’ll be able to playin the under-19 OceaniaTournament,” he says.
“Then maybe next year,once I’m finished school,play basketball at an Ameri-can college.”
St Ignatius College stu-dent and Norwood Swim-ming Club member AbbyDuncan is this month’s win-ner in the girls’ secondarycategory.
Pembroke School student
and fellow Norwood swim-mer Emily White is themonthly winner in the pri-mary school category.
