CRAIG ABERBACH retired from the Cape Coral (FL) Fire Department as a division chief after 22 years of service. After retiring, he was hired as the director of emergency services at Edison State College in southwestern Florida, where he is responsible for overseeing fire and EMS degrees and certifications. He is an adjunct professor at Edison State College and an instructor with Starfire Training Systems. RICH ALFES, a 26-year veteran of the fire service and a shift commander with the Naugatuck (CT) Fire Department, is also a rescue specialist and squad leader with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) USAR program, assigned to the Massachusetts Task Force, Squad A. He serves as a level-2 instructor for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, FEMA Structural Collaspe program. He has instructed in technical rescue special operations nationally and internationally. He is a partner and the president of Spec Rescue International, where he delivers fire, technical rescue, and management classes. DEREK ALKONIS is a battalion chief in the Los Angeles County (CA) Fire Department, where he has served for 21 years. He has served on the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF)/International Association of Fire Chiefs Fire Service Joint Labor Management Wellness-Fitness Technical Committee since its inception in 1996 and is the lead investigator for the IAFF Fire Ground Survival Program. KIRK ALLEN has served five years as the Kansas (IL) Fire Protection District chief and an active EMT. He retired from the U.S. Air Force, where he acquired a background in aircraft propulsion. In his 20-plus years in the fire service, he served in volunteer and career fire departments and in the areas of hazmat and fireground hydraulics. JOHN ALSTON is a captain and 25-year veteran of the Jersey City (NJ) Fire Department. He spent 10 years in heavy rescue and has been an instructor for 22 years. He teaches at the Jersey City and Union County (NJ) Fire Academies. JOSEPH M. ALVAREZ is a 23-year veteran of the fire service and a firefighter with the Maplewood (NJ) Fire Department, assigned to Tower Ladder 31. He is the author of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Firefighters: The Calls that Stick with You and Labor Relations in the Fire Service (Fire Engineering). He has an M.A. degree in labor and policy studies with a concentration in human resource management, a BS degree in fire science administration, and AS degrees in fire science and criminal justice. BRIAN ARNOLD is a 25-year veteran of the fire service and a major in the Oklahoma City (OK) Fire Department, where he has served since 1991. He is the fire training coordinator for the EOC technology center in Choctaw, Oklahoma. He helped develop and create Oklahoma’s only 16-week nonfire department firefighter recruit academy and firefighter training center. He has been published in Fire Engineering magazine. He has an AAS degree in EMS/municipal fire protection. He has several honors and awards in the fire service. ANTHONY AVILLO, a 26-year veteran of the fires service, is a deputy chief in North Hudson (NJ) Regional Fire & Rescue, assigned as 1st Platoon regional tour commander. He has a BS degree in fire science from New Jersey City University. He is an instructor at the Bergen County (NJ) and Monmouth County (NJ) Fire Academies. BALL, a 31-year veteran of the fire service, is chief of the Williamsport (MD) Volunteer Fire and Emergency Medical Service and a career firefighter with the Hagerstown (MD) Fire Department. JOSEPH BARTLETT retired as a captain from Palm Beach County (FL) Fire/Rescue. He is a FEMA lead rigging instructor (HEARS) and a FEMA structural collapse technician instructor. RICHARD BARTLETT is a 36-year veteran of the fire service and a former chief of the Carlstadt (NJ) Fire Department, assigned to Company 2. He is a New Jersey-certified level II fire instructor and an instructor at the Bergen County (NJ) Law and Public Safety Institute. MIKE BATES, who has more than 30 years in the fire service, is a lieutenant with the Providence (RI) Fire Department, assigned to Special Hazards 1. He is a member of the Massachusetts USAR task force and a fire instructor with the training group HEAVY RESCUE, INC. LISA BELANGER has been a career firefighter for 21 years. She is an acting captain with Vaughan Fire Rescue in Ontario, Canada. This is her seventh year as an FDIC H.O.T instructor. He is an instructor at the Bergen County (NJ) Fire Academy and has been an FDIC H.O.T. instructor for 12 years. STEVE BERNOCCO is a 20-year veteran of the Seattle (WA) Fire Department, where he is a lieutenant on Ladder 10. He has served as a training officer. DAVID BERNZWEIG has been in the fire service for 22 years, the past 15 with the Columbus (OH) Division of Fire, where he is a captain/paramedic. He serves on the Columbus Firefighters Union Executive Board, is a member of the OH-TF1, and is a state fire and EMS instructor. He is a member of the National Fire Protection Association Technical Committee for Respiratory Protection Equipment and Occupational Safety and Health. He has degrees in political science and economics from Ohio State University. PETE BERTOCCHI , a member of the Fire Department of New York’s Ladder Company 39 in the Bronx, is also a state fire instructor at Westchester County Fire Training Center. CURTIS BIRT, a 26-plus-year veteran of the fire service, is chief for the Lake Cities (TX) Fire Department. He is a fire academy instructor in live fire, technical rescue, and firefighter safety and survival. He has been an FDIC H.O.T. instructor since 1998. JASON BLAKE has 25 years of experience in the fire service and is a lieutenant in Montgomery County, Maryland. He is the in-service training coordinator at the training academy. RICHARD J. BLATUS is a 31-year veteran of the fire service, assigned to Rescue Battalion 1 in the Fire Department of New York. He is an adjunct instructor at the Fire Department of New York Bureau of Training for the Battalion Chiefs Command course and the Captains Development Program. JASON BLOUNT has served more than 25 years in the fire service; 20 of them have been with the Hillsboro (OR) Fire Department, where he is EMS and special operations chief. He has worked in suppression and as the training lieutenant, teaching the incident command system, EMS, technical rescue, extrication, live fire, and fireground operations. He is member of a type 2 incident management team and the OR-TF1. G. HOWARD BLYTHE is a firefighter in the Fire Department of New York, where he has served for 13 years and is assigned to Ladder Company 27 in the Bronx. Previous assignments include Ladder Company 15 and Ladder Company 113. He is a graduate of John Jay College in New York. He has a bachelor’s degree in fire and emergency service administration and is attending Oklahoma State University’s Graduate College. He is a nationally certified fire instructor III and fire officer III. He also works as a consultant for the State of Connecticut Fire Academy, were he teaches and rewrites program curriculum. CHRISTOPHER BRENNAN is a 14-year fire service veteran, a firefighter in the suburbs of Chicago, and the president of Spartan Concepts, Inc. JOHN BRENNER, a 33-year veteran of the fire service, is a captain with the Sacramento (CA) Fire Department, assigned to Rescue 20, the city’s heavy rescue company. He has been an FDIC H.O.T. instructor for 13 years. JASON BREZLER is a firefighter with the Fire Department of New York, assigned to Squad 252 in Brooklyn. He is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and holds the rank of Major, USMC. He has had several combat deployments and led Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan. PATRICK L. BROWN, a second-generation Chicago (IL) Fire Department firefighter, has been served there for eight years and is assigned to Engine 50, 19th Battalion, 5th District. He began his firefighting career 12 years ago. He has worked on engine, truck, and squad companies and has fought fires in rural, suburban, and urban settings. He is a state-certified paramedic, firefighter III, fire officer 1, and instructor II, with various specialty certifications. He is a member of the Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2 Health and Safety Committee ALAN V. BRUNACINI joined the Phoenix (AZ) Fire Department in 1958. He served in every department position, was promoted to chief in 1978, and retired in 2006. He is a graduate of the Fire Protection Technology program at Oklahoma State University. He has a BS and an M.P.A. from Arizona State University. He is the past chairman of the Board of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the NFPA Fire Service

He developed and instructed in the Blue Card curriculum package taught at the Phoenix Command Training Center from 2002 to 2006. BRIAN BRUSH is a lieutenant at West Metro Fire Rescue in Lakewood, Colorado, where he is assigned to Company 10. He began his fire service career in 1996 in Northern California as a volunteer. MIKE BRYANT, a 31-year veteran of the Los Angeles County (CA) Fire Department, is operations deputy fire chief and commands the East Regional Operations Bureau. ROBERT BURNS is a retired battalion chief from the Fire Department of New York. Prior to his recent retirement in 2011, he served the FDNY for 37 years, the last 18 as a chief officer. In addition to having been an adjunct instructor, teaching leadership, at John Jay College, he led the curriculum development group responsible for designing and delivering the leadership modules of the FDNY promotional training courses for lieutenants, captains, and battalion chiefs. He served as the director of the New York State First Line Supervisor’s Training Program at the FDNY Fire Academy from 2007 until 2010. He now conducts leadership training workshops around the country. ED BURWELL is a lieutenant with the Fire Department of New York, assigned to the 6th Division in the South Bronx. As a firefighter, he was assigned to Ladder 28 in Harlem. Previously, he was a firefighter/EMT with the Milford (CT) Fire-Rescue Department. He is an adjunct faculty member at Onondaga (NY) Community College in the Fire Protection Technology Program. In addition to instructing recruit firefighters, he coordinates the fire service instructor certification curriculum at the New York State Fire Academy. ADRIAN CALES has more than 30 years of fire investigation experience in the law enforcement, fire service, and private sectors. PAUL CAPO, a 15-year veteran of the fire service, is a lieutenant with the Clearwater (FL) Fire Department, assigned to Ladder 45. LEONARD CARMICHAEL JR. has more than 30 years of career and volunteer fire service experience and is a battalion chief with the Trenton (NJ) Division of Fire and Emergency Services Department, assigned to District 1. A graduate of Oklahoma State University, he is completing his master of education degree. HARRY R. CARTER is chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners for Howell Township (NJ) Fire District #2. He had a 26-year career with the Newark (NJ) Fire Department. He has also had a 39-year career with the Adelphia Fire Company in Howell Township, New Jersey, serving as chief in 1991; he serves as company chaplain and is an active life member. He has a doctor of philosophy degree in business from Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and is an adjunct faculty member in the School of Public Safety Leadership at Capella.

SALVATORE J. CASSANO was appointed the 32nd fire commissioner of the Fire Department of New York in 2010. He has 40 years of experience in the FDNY and has held every uniformed rank. Previously, he served as FDNY’s chief of department from 2006 through 2010 and as chief of operations from 2001 to 2006. He played a crucial role in rebuilding the department in the wake of Sept. 11 and the loss of 343 department members. He was cited for bravery five times, each time for rescuing New Yorkers from burning buildings. He served in the U.S. Army from October 1965 through July 1967 and was deployed to Vietnam in September 1966. He attended John Jay College of Criminal Justice and received a BS degree in fire science. JOSEPH J. CASSETTA, a member of the fire service for 15 years, serves with the Orlando (FL) Fire Department as an engineer at Engine 10. Previously, he was a member of the Cincinnati (OH) Fire Department. He has a BS in fire administration from Eastern Kentucky University and is a Florida state-certified instructor. He teaches fire science at Seminole Community College and is an FDIC H.O.T. instructor with the Truck Company Essentials program. JOHN P. CERIELLO is a 22-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York, where he is assigned to Squad Co. 252 in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. He is an instructor at FDNY's Rescue School and a member of NY-TF1. FRANK CHEATHAM is the coordinator of the Health and Medical Emergency Response Team for the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services. He retired from Dominion Virginia Power after 34 years of service; he served as safety supervisor, instructor, and first-line supervisor. He is an active member at East Hanover (VA) Volunteer Rescue Squad and has been involved in emergency services for approximately 35 years. During that time, he has been involved in various aspects of teaching and instruction, including vehicle extrication, mass-casualty incident management, and terrorism awareness. RON CHEVES began his fire service career nearly 40 years ago when he joined the Pinecroft-Sedgefield (NC) Fire Department. He then joined the Rural-Metro (TN) Fire Department. He then became a member of Idlewild (NC) Volunteer Fire Department, where he has been for 30 years. He acquired numerous certifications, including the UNC-C Fire & Rescue Management Institute and the NC Fire Chief’s Executive Development Program. He serves on many committees and organizational boards including his County Firefighters Association, Fire Museum, and Fire and Life Safety Bowl. He leads the Red Ribbon courses for the VCOS section of the International Association of Fire Chiefs. STEVE CHIKEROTIS is a 33-year member of the Chicago (IL) Fire Department, where he is a deputy district chief. He has been a chief officer for the past 15 years, in which time he has held the positions of battalion chief, director of training, and chief of fire academy operations. A fire service instructor for 25 years, he is a staff instructor at the Chicago Fire Academy and for the Illinois Fire Service Institute, RICO Fire Training, and the Harold Washington College. He has written a book and has had articles published in fire service publications. He works with the television and motion picture industry as a

CIAMPO is a 26-year veteran of the fire service and a lieutenant in the Fire Department of New York. Previously, he served with the District of Columbia Fire Department. He has a bachelor’s degree in fire science from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. He is the lead instructor for the FDIC Truck Essentials H.O.T. program. He wrote the Ladder chapter and co-authored the Ventilation chapter for Fire Engineering’s Handbook for Firefighter I and II (Fire Engineering, 2009). He is featured in “Training Minutes” truck company videos on www.fireengineering.com and is the author of the Fire Engineering monthly column “On Fire.” DOUGLAS CLINE is a 30-year veteran of the fire service and training commander with the High Point (NC) Fire Department. He is administrative assistant chief with the Ruffin Volunteer Fire Department. He is a North Carolina level II fire instructor, a National Fire Academy instructor, and an EMT-paramedic instructor for the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services. He is president of the Southeastern Association of Fire Chiefs (SEAFC), a member of the North Carolina Society of Fire and Rescue Instructors, and incoming president of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors (ISFSI). He has a bachelor’s degree in social services with a minor in education from Concord University. JOHN “SKIP” COLEMAN is a retired assistant chief from the Toledo (OH) Fire Department. He has authored several textbooks and has presented at FDIC and across the United States for more than 15 years. He is a recipient of the Fire Engineering Tom Brennan Training Achievement Award and is a technical editor of Fire Engineering. He is on the educational advisory board of FDIC and writes the monthly column “Web Watch” in Fire Engineering. DON COLLINS is assistant chief/shift commander for Massport Fire-Rescue at Boston-Logan International Airport. He is a 28-year veteran of the fire service and formerly served in the training division for three years. He is certified as a paramedic, hazmat technician, and a CISD peer support counselor. LAWRENCE COLLINS is a battalion chief and supervises eight fire stations in the south Los Angeles area. He has been part of the Los Angeles (CA) County Fire Department for 31 years. He is also a leader of the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s Urban Search and Rescue Team, which was deployed to help Japanese firefighters and rescuers searching for survivors of the earthquake in the hard-hit cities of Ofunoto and Kamaishi. Less than 24 hours before, this team had returned from conducting two weeks of search and rescue in the New Zealand earthquake. Last year, the

DENNIS COMPTON was chief in Mesa, Arizona, for five years and assistant chief in Phoenix, Arizona, where he served for 27 years. He has served as chairman of the International Fire Service Training Association executive board and of the Congressional Fire Services Institute National Advisory Committee. He is chairman of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Board of Directors. DAVID “CHIP” COMSTOCK JR. is a 30-year veteran of the fire service and chief of the Western Reserve Joint Fire District in Poland, Ohio. He is a Chief Fire Officer designee and lectures extensively on fire service topics related to company officer operations, liability, and personnel issues. His articles have appeared in many fire service magazines including Fire Engineering. He is an attorney in the firm of Comstock, Springer & Wilson Co., L.P.A. in Youngstown, Ohio. His law practice is focused on insurance defense litigation, including governmental liability and insurance fraud/arson cases. LARRY C. CONLEY is an 18-year veteran of the St. Louis (MO) Fire Department. He has instructed and graduated more than 150 recruits. He developed G.L.U.E. to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in the fire service nationwide. JAY COON, a 25-year veteran of the fire service, retired as a captain with the Sacramento (CA) Fire Department, where he was assigned to Rescue 20, the city’s heavy rescue company. He has been an FDIC H.O.T. instructor for 11 years.

BUSTER COOPER, a 23-year veteran of the fire service, is a in the Training Division of the Conway (AR) Fire Department and a member of the technical rescue team. He is the owner of 2 Alarm Fireground Training Inc. He is an adjunct instructor for the Arkansas Fire Academy and lead instructor for its forcible entry and ventilation hands-on programs. GLENN P. CORBETT, PE, has been in the fire service since 1978 and is a former assistant chief of the Waldwick (NJ) Fire Department, an associate professor of fire science at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City, and a technical editor for Fire Engineering. He previously held the position of administrator of engineering services with the San Antonio (TX) Fire Department. He has a master of engineering degree in fire protection engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. He authored two chapters on fire prevention/protection in The Fire Chief`s Handbook, Fifth Edition (Fire Engineering Books, 1995) and is the coauthor of the late Francis L. He has been extensively involved in all types of technical rescue since 1995 and has been a member of the Hamilton County Rescue Task Force since its inception. BRIAN CRANDELL is an assistant chief with the Central Valley Fire District, Belgrade, Montana, and has more than 30 years of career and volunteer fire service experience. His operational and teaching interests include command, firefighter safety, training, and mutual aid. JAMES K. CRAWFORD is the assistant chief for Midway Fire Rescue in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. He retired as the assistant chief of operations from the Pittsburgh (PA) Bureau of Fire after 20 years of service. He served 23 years in the Pennsylvania National Guard, retiring as a deputy chief of operations for the 171st Air Refueling Wing Fire Department. He is a graduate of the Air Force Fire Academy and spent four years on active duty as a firefighter. He is past deputy chief of training for the Pennsylvania USAR Strike Team. He is a life member and past chief of the Ben Avon (PA) Volunteer Fire Company. STEVE CROTHERS, a 17-year veteran of the fire service, has served 13 of those years in the Seattle (WA) Fire Department, where he is a lieutenant, a training officer, and the driver instructor officer. He was instrumental in developing and building the tiller program for the department. He is a Washington State Emergency Vehicle Incident Prevention instructor and Tractor-Drawn Aerial instructor. He has conducted tiller training with fire departments in the United States and Canada. GEORGE CRUZ is a captain with the Los Angeles County (CA) Fire Department. He has been in the fire service for 25 years; he has held the positions of firefighter, paramedic, and engineer. As a captain, he served as the Fitness for Life coordinator and medical liaison officer. He is an instructor for the IAFF/IAFC/ACE Peer Fitness Trainer Certification program and is a member of the IAFF/IAFC/ACE technical committee. HARVEY CRYDER is chief of the Screvin County (GA) Fire Department, where he also coordinates and conducts training in fireground management, special operations, and live fire workshops for the departments throughout his region. MICHAEL DALEY has served more than 24 years in the fire service and has held many officer positions in career and volunteer departments. He is a lieutenant/training officer with Monroe Township (NJ) Fire Department and is an instructor at the Middlesex County (NJ) Fire Academy, where he is responsible for training curriculum development. He is also a rescue officer with NJ-TF1. He founded Fire Service Performance Concepts, a corporation that provides training and course development support for emergency service providers. He has degrees in business administration and public safety management. DAVID DALRYMPLE, AIETecRI, is a career EMS provider for the RWJUH Emergency Medical Services in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and a volunteer FF/EMT/rescue technician for Clinton EMS/Rescue in Clinton, New Jersey. He has been actively involved with the emergency services for 27 years. He is the education chair of the Transportation Emergency Rescue Committee - US (TERC). He is certified as an international level extrication assessor and serves on the Expert Technical Advisory Board of the IETRI as its road traffic accident advisor. He is the executive educator for RoadwayRescue LLC, an educational team for transportation rescue training. He writes the extrication column for Fire Engineering.com, contributed to the Fire Engineering Handbook for Firefighter I and Firefighter II, and has hosted extrication Training Minutes for Fire Engineering and three DVDs on vehicle rescue for Fire Engineering. DUGAN, a 36-year veteran of the fire service, is also a 26-year member of the Fire Department of New York, where he serves as captain of Ladder Company 123 in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. As a lieutenant, he served in Ladder Company 42 in the South Bronx. While assigned as a firefighter in Ladder Company 43, in Spanish Harlem, he received the James Gordon Bennett medal in 1992 and the Harry M. Archer Medal in 1993, FDNY’s highest award for bravery. He was a volunteer firefighter in Halesite, New York. He lectures on truck company operations, building construction, size-up, and today’s fire service. THOMAS DUNNE is a deputy chief and 30-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York and has extensive experience working in Mid-Manhattan and the Bronx. He has been the incident commander at hundreds of fires in residential, commercial, and high-rise buildings. He has written numerous articles for Fire Engineering and has presented at conferences across the country. He also serves as an adjunct instructor for the National Fire Academy. A Fordham University graduate, he writes and lectures on a variety of fire service topics. JAMES ELLIS, a 20-plus-year veteran of the fire service, is a lieutenant with the Pittsburgh (PA) Bureau of Fire, assigned to Engine Company 8. He is a suppression instructor for the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy and a rescue specialist with the PA USAR Strike Team 1 and instructs nationally on firefighter rescue. He is the fire chief of the 171st Air Refueling Wing Fire Department for the Pennsylvania Air National Guard in Pittsburgh. BRYAN EMENECKER is a captain with the Camden (NJ) Fire Department, assigned to Squad Company 7. As a firefighter, he worked at Ladder Company 2 and Rescue Company 1. CHARLIE FADALE is a 23-year career firefighter; he has served the past three years as chief of the Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department Training Academy. Previously, he was a lieutenant on Indianapolis Fire Department Ladder 6 and was chief of safety and training for the former Washington Twp. (Indianapolis) Fire Department for four years. EDMUND FARLEY, a 19-year veteran of the fire service, is a captain with the Pittsburgh (PA) Bureau of Fire, assigned to Truck Co. 17. He is a suppression instructor for the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy and a rescue squad leader with the PA USAR Strike Team 1 and has several national fire service certifications. FISHER, a 36-year veteran of the fire service, has been the assistant fire education specialist for the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute since 1980; he coordinates fundamental fire training for the East Central region of Illinois. He serves as safety officer for the Pesotum (IL) Fire Department. Previously, he was a captain in the Champaign (IL) Fire Department, where he served for 26 years. He has a bachelor’s degree in fire science management from Southern Illinois University. Since 2003, he has coordinated the annual Explorer-Cadet Hands-On-Training Live Fire School, including the 2007 National Fire and Emergency Services Exploring Conference in Champaign.

STEPHEN FLORIAN has spent 18 years in the fire service working in cities like Highland Park, Michigan; Gary, Indiana; and now 10 years with Detroit, Michigan, where he is assigned to Ladder 19 on Detroit’s East Side. He has been an FDIC H.O.T. instructor for the past four years. He has an associate degree from the Ivy Tech State College of Indiana and is a Michigan-certified fire instructor at Macomb Community College Fire Training Institute.

BOB FRANKLIN has more than 40 years with the fire service. He has held numerous positions including chief of the volunteer department. He has been an instructor since 1976. He is the oldest practicing EMT in Arkansas and specializes in pump operations, water supply, and fire streams. He has been involved with apparatus specifications and the research and development of hose, nozzles, and foam systems. He taught ARFF and was a member of the urban search and rescue unit at Little Rock (AR) Fire Department. He founded the Northeast Saline County Fire District in 1988 and served on the 911 board in 1989. DAVID FRANKLIN is a 22-year veteran of the San Francisco (CA) Fire Department. He leads and commands Division 3 as an operations chief. He previously served as the chief of special operations and as a captain of safety and training, when he developed the

STEVE FRYE became a career firefighter/EMT with the Carmel (IN) Fire Department in 2000. He serves as the division chief of training. He has been a rescue specialist and heavy equipment and rigging specialist on IN-TF1 since 2005. He was promoted to rescue team manager in 2009 and is responsible for maintaining the training and deployment readiness of 75 rescue team members. He is a FEMA-certified structural collapse instructor.

MIKE GAGLIANO has 25 years of fire/crash/rescue experience with the Seattle (WA) Fire Department and the United States Air Force. He is the captain of Ladder 5 and a member of the Seattle Fire Department’s Critical Decision/Tactical Training group. He has written numerous fire service articles and is co-author of Air Management for the Fire Service and the self-contained breathing apparatus chapter of the Fire Engineering Handbook for Firefighter 1 and II (2009). He is a member of the Fire Engineering editorial advisory board and the FDIC advisory board; a director for the Cyanide Poisoning Treatment Coalition; and a national instructor on air management, fireground tactics, leadership, and company officer development. He partners with his wife Anne to teach on strategies for developing and maintaining a strong marriage/family. KEVIN A. GALLAGHER is the chief of the Acushnet (MA) Fire & EMS Department. He has more than 25 years of experience as a firefighter and a chief officer. He is an instructor in the Fire Science Program at Bristol Community College and has an associate degree in fire science and a bachelor’s degree in political science. In 2010, he was appointed by the governor of Massachusetts to the Board of Building Regulations and Standards, the state’s building code oversight board. KRISS GARCIA is the chief of the American Fork (UT) Fire Department. He retired from the Salt Lake City (UT) Fire Department after 27 years. He has more than 30 years of experience. He has had articles published in fire service periodicals and is the author of a book on fire tactics. RICHARD B. GASAWAY, PhD, retired as a chief after serving 30 years in the fire service. He now serves as the executive director for the Center for the Advancement of Situational Awareness and Decision Making. MICHAEL H. GILBERT, a 29-year veteran of the fire service, is chief of the Brevard Community College Fire Training Academy in Florida and assistant program coordinator for the College’s Fire Science Department. He is a lieutenant with the Melbourne (FL) Fire Department. He has been an FDIC staff member and a H.O.T. instructor since 1992.

BILLY GOLDFEDER, EFO, is deputy chief of the Loveland-Symmes (OH) Fire Department. He has been a firefighter since 1973, a company officer since 1979, and a chief officer since 1982. He serves on the International Association of Fire Chief board of directors, the Sept, 11th Families Association, and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. He has an extensive background in health care management, the fire service, and organizational development. He is a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (EMS and VCOS sections), Ohio Fire Chiefs Association, American Society for Training and Development, and the National Association of EMTs. He was Fire Chief of the Year for 2002 and is a member of the Commission on Chief Fire Officer and Chief Medical Officer Designation. He is the author of two books on leadership and one on team building. BILL HOPSON is a 34-year veteran of the fire service and deputy fire marshal for the Ocean County (NJ) Fire Marshal's Office. He is an active level II, classroom, and live burn instructor with mutiple New Jersey fire academies. He was a presenter and an instructor at FDIC from 1999 to 2009. RUDY HORIST is a 28-year member of the fire service and deputy chief of operations for the McHenry Township (IL) Fire Department. CHERYL HORVATH is the division chief of operations for the Northwest Fire District in Tucson, Arizona. She has been in the fire service since 1992, working as a full-time firefighter in Illinois, where she served as union president for four years and as a field instructor for the Illinois Fire Service Institute. She is the past president of the board of trustees for the International Association of Women in Fire & Emergency Services. He is a senior captain with the St. Andrews Fire Department in Charleston, South Carolina, and a level II fire instructor, a fire officer IV, an incident safety officer, and an advocate for the NFFF “Everyone Goes Home Program.” He has presented classes at FDIC and other industry conferences. He has held many ranks during his fire service career in paid and volunteer organizations. MIKE KIRBY is a captain with the Cincinnati (OH) Fire Department, assigned to Engine Co. 12. He is an 18-year veteran of the fire service and has worked in urban, suburban, and rural fire departments. He is a fire instructor for the Cincinnati Fire Department and the Bowling Green State University State Fire School. JAMES KIRSCH is a career lieutenant with the Bergenfield (NJ) Fire Department and a former volunteer chief. A 29-year fire service veteran, he is a state-certified drill ground and live fire instructor. He also serves as a logistics manager for the NJ US&R team. He has a master’s degree in public administration and is the creator of the DVD Live Fire Training in Acquired Structures. TOM KIURSKI, a 30-year veteran of the fire service, has served Livonia (MI) Fire & Rescue for the past 25 years as a training coordinator, a lieutenant, a paramedic/firefighter, and the director of fire safety education. He has completed the certificate in fire service leadership course though Dalhousie University, is a graduate of the fire protection technologist course through the Ontario Fire College, and is working toward a diploma in public administration at Western University. He is a seconded and associate instructor at the Ontario Fire College. He has been published in Fire Engineering and Fire Fighting in Canada. He lectures extensively in Ontario, Canada, and is a keynote speaker for FDIC 2012. STEVE KREIS has been a member of the Phoenix (AZ) Fire Department for 36 years. He began in 1975 as a firefighter and was promoted to his current position as executive assistant chief of emergency services, which he has held for three years; he was assistant chief of operations for 11 years. He has a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in public administration from Arizona State University. BRYANT KRIZIK retired as a chief from the Orland (IL) Fire Protection District after 29 years in the fire service. He has a master’s degree in public administration from Governors State University. He is an instructor for the Illinois Fire Service Institute, Moraine Valley Community College, and the Illinois Society of Fire Service Instructors. He has been with the FDIC 1403 H.O.T. class since its inception in 2003. JASON KRUSEN is the special operations chief with the Columbia (SC) Fire Department and has been in the fire service for more than 18 years. PAUL LAROCHELLE, a third-generation firefighter, is a 35-year veteran of the fire service. He has 24 years of service with the Worcester (MA) Fire Department, where he is a lieutenant. RICK LASKY, a 30-year veteran of the fire service, retired as chief of the Lewisville (TX) Fire Department. He began his career as a firefighter in the suburbs of Chicago; while in Illinois, he received the 1996 International Society of Fire Service Instructors “Innovator of the Year” award for his part in developing the “Saving Our Own” program. He has served as the co-lead instructor for the H.O.T. Firefighter Survival program at FDIC for more than10 years and is an editorial advisory board member of Fire Engineering and an advisory board member for FDIC. LEWIS is a 30-plus-year veteran of the fire service and a ladder company lieutenant with the Passaic (NJ) Fire Department. FRANK MONTAGNA, a 41-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York, has been a battalion chief for 25 years. He wrote the department’s gas and electric procedure manuals. He is one of the creators of Fire Engineering’s simulations. He has a BS in fire science. MARK MOORMAN is a 25-year veteran of the Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department. He has worked for 15 years on Engine 10 and has been assigned as a captain in the Training Division since 2006. He has taught a variety of subjects throughout the state as a field instructor with the Illinois Fire Service Institute and other regional schools in his 22 years in the fire service. He serves on the Rescue Specialist committee with the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office and has a bachelor’s degree in fire science management from Southern Illinois University. He has been with the FDIC 1403 H.O.T. class since its inception in 2003. CHRISTOPHER NAUM is a 36-year veteran of the fire service, is an adjunct instructor with the National Fire Academy and a National Fire Fighters Foundation/Everyone Goes Home Firefighter Safety Advocate; a member of the board of directors of the International Association of Fire Chief’s Safety, Health & Survival Section; and the International Society of Fire Service Instructors (ISFSI). A former architect and fire protection engineer, he was the 1987 International Society of Fire Service Instructors George D. Post National Fire Instructor of the Year. He is a technical reviewer for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Firefighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program, Firefighter Line-of-Duty Deaths reports and investigations. He is a senior instructor with the New Mexico Firefighter’s Training Academy in Socorro, New Mexico. He works for Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, where he is responsible for teaching decision-making skills and conducting hands-on drills and exercises for the Lab’s emergency response team, and develops a command training center under contract with the Albuquerque Fire Department. CRAIG NELSON has been in the fire service for more than 10 years, working as a volunteer, paid-on-call, and a full-time firefighter/EMT. PAUL J. NORWOOD is a deputy chief/training officer for the East Haven (CT) Fire Department and served four years with the Connecticut Army National Guard. CHAD SARTISON had an 18-year career in the financial industry and was recognized by Calgary Inc. magazine as one of Calgary’s Top 40 under 40 entrepreneurs in 2007. In 2004, he founded The Fire Within (now Firefighters 1st), which has helped firefighters raise more than $3 million for volunteer firefighters and has donated an additional $500,000 in equipment and training. He is chairman of the organization, which is in its

JEFF SCHWERING is a 20-year veteran of the Crestwood (MO) Fire Department. Previously, he worked for six years with the Shrewsbury Fire Department. He has an associate degree in fire science and is a Missouri-certified fire investigator. JEFF SEATON has been a member of the San Jose (CA) Fire Department for 18 years. He is co-founder of the “Nobody Gets Left Behind” training group, a former Western regional director of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors, a speaker at conferences, and an FDIC H.O.T instructor. GARY SEIDEL, a 34 year veteran of the fire service veteran, served 26 years with the Los Angeles (CA) Fire Department, where he held the rank of assistant chief, and eight years as fire chief for Hillsboro (OR) Fire Department. JIM SEWNIG, a 21-year veteran of the fire service, is a member of the Chicago (IL) Fire Department, assigned to Squad 1. He has an associate degree in fire science and a BA in management from Benedictine University. JOHN SHAFER is a lieutenant and the training officer for the Greencastle (IN) Fire Department and the Indiana Homeland Security District 7 fire training coordinator. He is a 17-year veteran of the career and volunteer fire service. He was an advisor to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security for the state’s development of the Fire Training System of Indiana and assisted in the development of the District 7 Training Council and the District 7 Response Task Force. SHAND is a 40-year veteran of the fire service; he began his career with the College Park (MD) Fire Department in 1970 while attending the University of Maryland. PAUL SHAPIRO, a member of the fire service since 1981 and a retired engineer from the Las Vegas (NV) Fire Department, is director of Fire Flow Technology and a national instructor on large-flow water delivery. He has authored numerous articles for fire trade magazines and a video on large-flow water delivery. DAN SHAW has been a member of the fire service since 1992 and is a captain with the Fairfax County (VA) Fire & Rescue Department. He has instructed at FDIC and has written for Fire Engineering. He instructs nationally on fireground operations as a vice president of Traditions Training, LLC. CRAIG H. SHELLEY is a 40-plu-year member of the fire service. For 26 years, he served with the Fire Department of New York with units of the Special Operations Command; he retired as the chief of marine operations. After retiring from the FDNY, he was appointed as the fire chief for the Rutland (VT) Fire Department. He then served in the Middle East as a fire protection technical advisor for Saudi Aramco. He is a fire and safety consultant for World Safe International, LLC. He has a BS degree in fire service administration and an M.S. degree in executive fire service leadership. He is the author of many articles published in trade magazines as well as a co-author of Industrial Firefighting for Municipal Firefighters (Fire Engineering, 2007). DAN SHERIDAN is a 26-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York, where he is a battalion chief. He has worked in Harlem and the Bronx for most of his career. He is a national instructor and the founder and chief operating officer of Mutual Aid Americas, an international nonprofit training group to assist firefighters. Previously, he instructed at the Rockland County (NY) Fire Academy. He is a frequent contributor to Fire Engineering and has a monthly column on FireEngineering.com. He authored Chapter 12 (Forcible Entry) for the Fire Engineering Handbook for Firefighter I and II. WILLIAM SHOULDIS served in line and staff positions with the Philadelphia (PA) Fire Department for 35 years. He is an instructor at the National Emergency Training Center and a guest speaker at the Graduate School at St. Joseph’s University. JIM SILVERNAIL is a captain in St. Louis County, Missouri. He serves as a resident contract instructor at the National Fire Academy, a lead instructor at the St. Louis County Fire Academy, and a member of MO-TF1. TOM SITZ is a lieutenant and 26-year veteran of the Painesville Twp. (OH) Fire Department. He is an instructor in the fire science program at Lakeland Community College and in the state firefighter certification program at Auburn Career Center. He has written several articles for Fire Engineering and presented several times at FDIC. DENISE L. SMITH, Ph.D., is a professor of health and exercise sciences at Skidmore College, where she directs the First Responder Health and Safety Laboratory, and a research scientist at the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute. She has coauthored an exercise physiology textbook and an advanced cardiovascular exercise physiology textbook and has contributed to a textbook on live fire training. She has conducted far-reaching research on the cardiovascular strain associated with firefighting and has lectured extensively on health and safety issues in the fire service. She is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a member of the National Fire Protection Association Fire Service Occupational Safety and Health committee. GERARD SMITH JR. began his career in the fire service in 1995. Since 2004, he has been a member of the Baltimore City (MD) Fire Department (BCFD), where he is a firefighter/paramedic assigned to Truck Company 15 and to Special Operations Command as a member and instructor of the dive rescue team. He is member of the Fort Washington Volunteer Fire Company in Montgomery County, PA. Before joining the BCFD, he graduated from Loyola University of Maryland in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. GREG SMITH is a 25-year veteran the fire service. He has spent the past 19 years with the Fishers (IN) Fire Department. He is a lieutenant assigned to the heavy rescue company on the “A” shift. He has been a member of the Hamilton County Rescue Task Force since its inception and is a rescue diver and also oversees technical rescue operations for his shift. He has been an active instructor for recruit academies and area fire departments for more than 15 years. KYLE SMITH is a lieutenant with Cobb County (GA) Fire and Emergency Services, assigned to Engine Company 19. He has been in the fire service for 18 years and worked in career and volunteer fire departments. He also works as a consultant for a fire protection engineering firm specializing in big box retail. JIM SMITH, a 19-plus-year veteran of the fire service, has spent the past 11 years with the Fire Department of New York, where he is assigned to Squad 41. JACK SORRELLS, a 23-year veteran of the fire service, serves as a lieutenant with Cobb County (GA) Fire and Emergency Services, where he is the hazmat team training coordinator. He is a lead instructor with the Georgia Smoke Diver Program. He has an AAS degree in fire science technology and a BBA degree in finance. RON SPADAFORA is an assistant chief and a 33-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York, where he is also the chief of logistics in the Bureau of Operation. He has written numerous articles for WNYF and serves on its advisory board. He has also written for Fire Engineering, Size-Up, and the American Journal of Industrial Medicine. He has taught fire science at John Jay College for more than 20 years as an adjunct professor and is the senior instructor for Fire Technology Incorporated. WILLIAM STALLFORT retired as a battalion chief from the Cherry Hill (NJ) Fire Department, where he was assigned to the Operations Division. He has been actively involved in the fire service since 1974. He retired from NJ-TF1, which he served as rescue squad leader and instructor, and in the Technical Search component. He is an instructor with Safety & Survival Training, LLC and previously was an FDIC H.O.T. instructor. LES STEPHENS, a 21-year veteran of the fire service, is the chief of the San Marcos (TX) Fire Department. He is certified as a master firefighter and an instructor with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. He has served as his department’s training instructor and is an instructor at Collin County Community College in McKinney, Texas, and at Texas A&M University Municipal Fire School. DOUG STEPHENSON, a 20-year veteran of the fire service, is a lieutenant assigned to an engine company for a metro Atlanta (GA) fire department. His duties include coordinating training in special operations, fireground management, firefighter survival, and live fire exercises. He is a lead instructor for various special operations programs, including the Georgia Smoke Diver Program, with the Georgia Fire Academy. He is a principal member of National Fire Protection Association’s Special Operations Protective Clothing and Equipment Committee and the co-owner of www.AxcessRescue.com, a highly specialized, vertical response training company. He has taught at FDIC since 1997. EUGENE STOLOWSKI has more than 20 years in the fire service. He served 12 years with the Fire Department of New York, where he was assigned to Ladder 27 in the Bronx. In 2005, he was one of six firefighters forced to jump out of the fourth floor of a Bronx tenement on what has become known as “Black Sunday.” He is a nationally certified instructor and safety officer. HUGH STOTT is a deputy chief for the West Chicago (IL) Fire District. He has also been a field instructor for the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute since 1983. He has been the lead instructor for the Institute’s Breathing Apparatus Specialist class (Smoke Divers). DALE STRAIN is a lieutenant with 26 years of service with the Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department, where he is assigned to Engine 8. He spent 10 years in the training division conducting all aspects of training for recruits as well as incumbents. DANNY STRATTON is a 26-year veteran firefighter, with experience as a volunteer, U.S. Army, and career firefighter. He is a captain with the Camden City (NJ) Fire Department, a course coordinator at the Camden County Emergency Training Center, and an instructor for Safety and Survival LLC. He is a rescue specialist with New Jersey’s USAR team. He has an associate degree in fire science from Camden County Community College. MATT STROUD is a 22-year veteran of Toyota Motor Corporation, where he is a master diagnostic technician, certified in vehicle technologies including hybrids. He founded MGS TECH in 2007 with the goal of teaching firefighters/EMS personnel how to safely manage hybrid and other new technology vehicle incidents. He has completed multiple extrication courses, giving him a strong knowledge base of fire tactics and terminologies. He works with fire agencies around the country distributing the Hybrid Response Guide (HRG) and teaching firefighters/EMS personnel how to prevent potential injuries to responders and vehicle occupants. JACK SULLIVAN, CSP, CFPS, is the director of training for the Emergency Responder Safety Institute. He retired as a lieutenant and a safety officer from Lionville (PA) Fire-Rescue. He has more than 30 years of experience as an instructor and works on various national committees dealing with traffic incident management and roadway incident safety for the fire service. STEFAN SVENSSON began his career as a firefighter in the Swedish Air Force in 1986. In 1989, he earned a bachelor’s degree in fire protection engineering and, in 2002, a Ph.D. at Lund University in Sweden. During the past 17 years, he has been involved in experimental and theoretical investigations on firefighting tactics, including firefighting methods and command and control. He is the author of several books, scientific articles, and reports. He is involved with the local fire brigade as a firefighter/crew commander. RICK SWALES is a firefighter with the Coweta County (GA) Fire Department, where he is assigned to a rescue company and coordinates and conducts training in fireground management, special operations, and live fire workshops. He teaches with the Georgia Smoke Diver Program, where he assists with fireground survival training. MATT SZPINDOR, a 25-year veteran of the fire service, is a lieutenant with the Fire Department of New York, where he is an instructor to the Special Operations Command

TODD TAYLOR is a battalion chief with the Wayne Township (IN) Fire Department. He has been in the fire service for 26 years, both with the United States Air Force and another municipal department in Indiana. He is the owner of Advanced Rescue Solutions, which specializes in technical rescue training. He is a member of IN-TF. MIKE TERPAK, a 35-year veteran of the fire service, is a deputy chief and citywide tour commander in the Jersey City (NJ) Fire Department. Throughout his career, he has worked in the city’s Lafayette and Greenville areas with Engines 10 and 17, Ladder 12, and Rescue 1; as chief of the city’s 2nd Battalion; and as former chief in charge of the city’s Training Division. He lectures nationally on fire/rescue topics and is the founder of Promotional Prep, a New Jersey-based consulting firm that prepares firefighters and fire officers studying for promotional exams. He has a BS degree in fire safety administration from the City University of New Jersey and is the author of Fire Ground Size-Up, Assessment Center Strategy and Tactics, and Fireground Operational Guides (Fire Engineering,). JOHN TEW is a 20-year veteran of the fire service and has been a member of the Fire Department of New York for 13 years, assigned as a firefighter in Rescue Company 4. LOREN TEWES, a 22-year veteran of the fire service, is a lieutenant on Engine 9, “A” shift, for the Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department. He has served in the Training Division for 12 years and continues to assist that division as a shift training officer. J. SCOTT THOMPSON, chief of The Colony (TX) Fire Department, began his fire service career in 1981 and served as a career and volunteer firefighter in large and small organizations. He has been a presenter and H.O.T. instructor at FDIC since 2002. He has a bachelor’s degree in emergency administration and planning and is a certified public manager. WILLIE THOMPSON is a firefighter with the Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department, where he is assigned to the Training Division as the aerial instructor. He specializes in ventilation, forcible entry, and strategic and tactical considerations for the truck company. Previously, he served 10 years as a firefighter in the Air Force, four of those years as an instructor at the Air Force Academy for Fire Protection, where he received master instructor certification. He teaches state level classes such as instructor I, II/III, and fire officer I. GERALD TRACY, a retired battalion commander, served 31 years with the Fire Department of New York. He was chief of the Franklin Park (IL) Fire Department, retiring after 30 years of service. He is the director of training for the Bensenville (IL) Fire Protection District and a firefighter for the Berkeley (IL) Fire Department. He is also an instructor for the Northern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy. He has been an instructor and speaker at FDIC for several years and instructs nationally. DANIEL M. TROXELL, a 34-year veteran of the fire service, is the captain of Truck Company 6 in the Washington (DC) Fire Department. A Pro Board-certified level III instructor, he serves as an adjunct instructor with the DC Fire Department Training Academy and has developed and taught courses for in-service company and probationary firefighter training. He is an instructor for Traditions Training, LLC, a company specializing in combat-ready street-smart firefighter training. In addition, he manages Troxfire Training Solutions, LLC, which develops realistic training props and classes for truck company operations. He has a BS degree in fire protection engineering and an M.S. degree in applied management, both from the University of Maryland at College Park. JOHN TSOKALAS, a 30-year veteran of the fire service, is a lieutenant in the Manchester (CT) Fire Department. He has been a certified fire service instructor since 1989 and an adjunct instructor with the Connecticut Fire Academy for nearly 20 years. He has extensive knowledge in technical rescue operations and all facets of vehicle and machinery operations. CYNTHIA ROSS TUSTIN has been the deputy chief for the Bradford West Gwillimbury Fire and Emergency Service and the Barrie Fire and Emergency Services, Canada. She has 25 years in the fire service and is a program specialist with the Office of the Fire Marshal. She has worked as a critical care nurse, a volunteer firefighter, and an instructor with the Georgian College Fire Pre-Service Program. She has been a speaker at FDIC and has been published in fire service magazines and journals throughout Canada and the United States. ROBERT TYLER is a 36-year veteran of the fire service. He is chief in Sandpoint, Idaho, where he has served 29 years. Previously, he served as firefighter, engineer, captain, and department training officer. He served on the Idaho Emergency Services Training Board for seven years and is an active member in the Northern Idaho Fire Chief’s Association. He has been teaching at FDIC since 2004. MARK VAN DER FEYST, a member of the Woodstock (Ont., Canada) Fire Department, began his career in the fire service in 1998 with the Cranberry Township (PA) Volunteer

PETER VAN DORPE is director of training for the Chicago (IL) Fire Department, where he has served for 32 years. He has a bachelor’s degree in fire science management from Southern Illinois University. He has been a field instructor for the Illinois Fire Service Institute and a lead instructor for the Chicago Fire Department’s Fire Officer School and teaches building construction for the fire service through the City Colleges of Chicago. CURT VARONE has more than 39 years of experience in the fire service, from which he retired in 2008 as a deputy assistant chief (shift commander) with the Providence (RI) Fire Department. He is now the director of the Fire Service Division of the Legal & Liability Risk Management Institute and most recently was the director of the Public Fire Protection Division at the National Fire Protection Association. He is a practicing attorney, licensed in Rhode Island and Maine. He has written Legal Considerations for Fire and Emergency Services and Fire Officer's Legal Handbook and is a member of the Fire Engineering Fire Service Court. FRANK VISCUSO is a 20-year veteran of the fire service and a tour commander in Kearny, New Jersey. He is a level 2 New Jersey fire instructor, co-creator of FireOpsOnline, and the author of three books, including Fireground Operational Guides (with Michael Terpak). He has developed more than 50 standard operating procedures and has served seven years as his department’s training officer. His articles appear in Fire Engineering. MICHAEL WALKER has been a member of the Oklahoma City (OK) Fire Department for 22 years and a battalion chief for the past five years. BRIAN WARD, an 18-year veteran of the fire service, is a captain with the Cherokee County (GA) Fire Department, assigned as a station officer in the 2nd battalion. DOUGLAS WATSON began his firefighting career in 1975 as a volunteer firefighter in Greenwich, Connecticut. JIM WEISS retired as chief of Battalion 5 from the Newark (NJ) Fire Department, which he joined in 1984. He joined the fire service and the Hackensack (NJ) Fire Department in 1981. He is an instructor at the Bergen County Fire Academy and has been an FDIC H.O.T. instructor since 1999. JEFF WELCH retired from the fire service after 28 years. He has served in positions up to and including chief. He was a field instructor for the Illinois Fire Service Institute and continues to instruct in many disciplines. DEVON WELLS, a 20-year veteran of the fire service, is chief of Hood River (OR) Fire & EMS. He is a western regional director of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors. JERRY WELLS is a battalion chief in the Lewisville (TX) Fire Department, where he has served for more than 26 years. He has worked at all levels from firefighter/paramedic to battalion chief. CARL WENDT is a 23-year veteran of the Newark (NJ) Fire Department, where he is a captain with Rescue Co #1. He is also a 24-year member of the Boonton (NJ) Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as deputy chief for 2010 and as the FAST coordinator. He is a NJ-level 2 instructor and teaches at the Passaic County Fire Academy. This is his fifth year as an FDIC H.O.T. instructor. STEVE WHITE is a 20-year veteran of the Fishers (IN) Fire Department, where he is a battalion chief and is responsible for all facets of the department’s technical rescue program. Under the direction of the Hamilton County Fire Chiefs, he serves as the team leader for the Hamilton County Technical Rescue Team. BILLY WHITFIELD is a lieutenant/paramedic with Cedar Hammock (FL) Fire Rescue, where he has served since 1991. He entered the fire service in 1989 and served as a volunteer firefighter at the West Side Fire Department. He is a Florida-licensed paramedic and fire inspector. MICHAEL WILBUR has been a volunteer firefighter for more than 38 years; he has spent 30 of those years with the Fire Department of New York, where he is a lieutenant assigned to Ladder Company 27 in the Bronx. Previously, he served on Ladder Company 56 and on the FDNY apparatus purchasing committee. He guided the FDNY chauffeurs school through state certification. He has been published in fire service publications, served on the IFSTA validation committees for the Apparatus Operator and Aerial Operator manuals, and on the U.S. Fire Administration committees on Safe Operation of Fire Tankers and Emergency Vehicle Safety Initiative. He is nationally recognized in the areas of emergency vehicle operations, apparatus placement, and apparatus purchasing. NICK WILBUR has been a firefighter/EMT for the College Park (MD) Fire Department for three and a half years and has been a volunteer at Howells (NY) Fire Department more than five years. He has also been a support instructor in emergency vehicle response for the past five years. DERRICK WILLIAMS is a 10-year veteran of the Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department, assigned to Engine 31 as a private. He has a degree in fire science and is one of the shift training officers. He has instructed in engine and ladder company operations, rapid intervention, and vent-enter-search. KOY WILSON has been a member of the Stockton (CA) Fire Department for 11 years and a tillerman on Truck 2 for the past seven years. BRYAN WINZER is a 19-year veteran of the fire service and a nine-year member of the Fire Department of New York, where he is assigned to Engine Company 231 in Brooklyn. has been an FDIC H.O.T. instructor and a lecturer. He is a member of the development team for “To Hell and Back,” an educational program on the reality of burn injuries for firefighters. STEVEN WOODWORTH is a 28-year veteran of the fire service and an assistant chief with the Atlanta (GA) Fire Department. He is an instructor with the Georgia Fire Academy and with Safe-IR Inc., a training firm specializing in thermal imaging. He has been a FDIC H.O.T. instructor for the past 15 years. JOEL YODER, a 31-year veteran of the fire service, is a battalion chief with the Rockdale County (GA) Fire Department, assigned as a station officer, shift training officer, and a hazmat coordinator. He is also a lead instructor with the Georgia Smoke Diver Program and coordinates and manages all live fire evolutions. He has assisted the Georgia Fire Academy with the development and instruction of live fire training, as an adjunct instructor, since 1983. MATT ZIMPFER is a 10-year veteran of and a firefighter in the Fire Department of New York, assigned to Ladder Company 27 in the Bronx. Prior to working for the FDNY, he served five years as a paramedic. He is a veteran of the United States Navy and attended St. Joseph’s Paramedic School. He is an instructor for several private consulting companies in firefighter survival, forcible entry, and truck company operations.
