OPERATE YOUR SAW SAFELY• Do not operate with one hand. Sed-

ous injury to the operator, helpers, orbystanders may resuff from one-handed operation. A chain saw is in-tended for two-handed use.

• Operate the chain saw only in a well-ventilated outdoor area.

• Do not operate saw from a ladder orin a tree, unless you are specificallytrained to do so.

• Make sure the chain will not makecontact with any object while startingthe engine. Never try to start the sawwhen the guide bar is in a cut.

• Do not put pressure on the saw, es-pecially at the end of the cut. Doingso can cause you to lose controlwhen the cut is completed.

• Stop engine before setting saw down.• Hand carry saw only when engine is

stopped. Carry with muffler away frombody; guide bar & chain projecting be-hind you; guide bar preferably cov-ered with a scabbard.

MAINTAIN YOUR SAW IN GOODWORKING ORDER• Have all chainsawserviceperformed

by a qualifiedservicedealer exceptthe itemslistedinthe maintenancesectionof thismanual:

• Make certainthe sawchainstopsmovingwhenthe throttletriggeris re*leased.For correction,referto =Car-buretorAdjustments."

• Keepthe handlesdry, clean, and freefrom oilor fuel mixture.

• Keep caps and fasteners securely

• tightened.UseonlyCraftsmanaccessories andreplacementpartsas recommended.Nevermodify yoursaw.

HANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTION• Do not smoke while handling fuel or

while operating the saw.• Eliminate all sources of spanksor flame

in areas where fuel is mixed or poured.• Mix and pour fuel in an outdoor area

and use an approved, marked con-tainer for all fuel purposes. Wipe upall fuel spills before starting saw.

• Move at least 10 feet (3 meters) fromfueling site before starting.

• Turn the engine off and let saw cool ina non-combustible area, not on dryleaves_straw, paper, etc. Slowly re-move fuel cap and refuel unit.

• Store the unit and fuel in a coot, drywell ventilated space where fuel va-pors cannot reach sparks or openflames from water heaters, electdcmotors or switches, furnaces, etc.

GUARD AGAINST KICKBACK

Follow all safety rules to help avoidkickback and other forces which canresult in sedous injury.

'_ .i_,_j_./t. KickbackPath

AvoidObstructions

Clear The WorkingArea

WARNING: Rotational Kickback canoccur when the moving chain contactsan object at the upper portion of the tipof the guide bar. Contact at the upperportion of the tip of the guide bar cancause the chain to dig into the object, which stops the chain for an instant. Theresult is a lightning fast_ reverse reactionwhich kicks the guide bar up and backtoward the operator.Pinch-Kickback and Pull-In occur whenthe chain is suddenly stopped by beingpinched, caught, or by contacting a for-eign object in the wood. This suddenstopping of the chain results in a rever-sal of the chain force used to cut woodand causes the saw to move in the op-posite direction of the chain rotation.Pinch-Kickback drives the saw straightback toward the operator. Pull-In pullsthe saw away from the operator.

REDUCE THE CHANCE OFKICKBACK• Recognize that kickback can happen.

W'dha bask_understandingof kickback, you can reduce the element of surprisewhich contributesto accident_

• Never let the moving chain contactany object at the tip of the guide bar.

• Keep working area free from obstruc-tions such as other trees, branches, rocks, fences, stumps, etc. Eliminateor avoid any obstruction that your saw

• chain could hit while cutting.Keep saw chain sharp and propedytensioned. A loose or dull chain can

increase the chance of kickback. Fol-low manufacturer's chain sharpeningand maintenance instructions.Checktension at regular intervals, but neverwith engine running. Make sure bar

° clamp nuts are securely tightened.Begin and continue cutting, at fullspeed, If the chain is moving at aslower speed, there is greater chanceof kickback occurring.

• Use extreme caution when reenteringa cuL

da not attempt cuts starting with thetip of the bar (plunge cuts);Watch for shifting logs or other forcesthat could close a cut and pinch or fallinto chain.

• Use the specified Reduced-KickbackGuide Bar and Low-Kickback Chain.

Avoid Pinch-Kickback:• Be extremeJy aware of situations or

obsbuctions that can cause materialto pinch the top of or otherwise stopthe chain.

• Do not cut more than one log at atime.

• Do not twist saw as bar is w_:trewnfrom an undercut when bucking°

Avoid Pull*In:° Always begin cutting with the engine

GUIDE BAR AND CHAIN OILThe chain oiler provides continuous lu-brication to the chain and guide bar. Besure to fill the bar oil tank when you fillthe fuel tank (Capacity = 6,8 fL oz.).For maximum guide bar and chain life,we recommend you use Craftsmanchain saw bar oil. If Craftsman bar oil isnot available, you may use a goodgrade SAE 30 oil until you are able toobtain Craftsman brand. The oil outputis automatically metered during opera-tion. Your saw will use approximatelyone tank of bar oil for every tank of fuelmix. Always fill the bar oil tank whenyou fill the fuel tank.

FUELING ENGINEThis engine is certified to operate onunleaded gasoline. Before operation, gasoline must be mixed witha goodquality 2-cycle air-cooled engine oil. Werecommend Craftsman-brand oil. Mixgasoline and oil at a ratio of 40:1 (A40:1 ratio is obtained by mixing 3.2ounces of oil with 1 gallon of unleadedgasoline). DO NOT USE automotive oi!or boat oil. These oils will cause enginedamage. When mixing fuel follow theinstructions printed on the container.Once oil is added to the gasoline, shake container momentarily to assurethat the fuel is thoroughly mixed.Always read and follow the safety rulesrelating to fuel before fueling your unit.

IMPORTANTExperience indicates that alcohol blendedfuels (called gasohol or using ethanol ormethanol)can attract moLoture which •leadsto separation and formation ofacids duringstorage. Acidic gas candamage the fuel system of an enginewhile in storage. To avoid engine problems, the fuel sys-tem shouldbe emptied before storage for -30 days or longer. Drain the gas tank, startthe engine and let it rununtil the fuel

lines and carburetor are empty. Use freshfuel next season. See STORAGEinstruc-tions for additional information.Never use engine or carburetor cleanerproducts in the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur.

OPERATING TIPS• Check chain tension before first use

and after 1 minute of operat(on. SeeChain Tension in the Maintenancesection.

• Cut wood only. Do not cut metal, plas-tics, masonry, non-wood building ma-terials, etc.

• Stop the saw if the chain strikes a for-eign object. Inspect the saw and re-pair parts as necessary.

• Keep the chain out of dirt and sand.Even a small amount of dirtwill quick-ly dull a chain and increase the possi-bility of kickback.

• Practice cutting a few small logs usingthe following steps. This will help youget the "feel" of using your saw beforeyou begin a major sawing operation.• Squeeze the throttle trigger end al-

low the engine to reach full speedbefore cutting.

• Begin cutting with the saw frameagainst the log.

• Keep the engine at full speed theentire time you are cutting.

° Allow the chain to cut for you. Exertonly light downward pressure.

• Release the thro.ttletrigger as soonas the cut is completed, allowing theengine to idle. If you run the saw atfull throttle w thout a cutting !cad, unnecessary wear can occur.

• To avoid losing control when cut iscomplete, do not put pressure onsaw at end of cut,

• Stop engine before settingsaw down.

TREE FELLING TECHNIQUES

WARNING: Check for broken or deadbranches which can fall while cuttingcausing serious injury. Do not cut nearbuildings or electrical wires if you do notknow the direction of tree fall, nor Cut atnight since you will not be able to seewelt, nor during bad weather such asrain, snow, or strong winds, etc.° Carefully plan your sawing operation

in advance.• Clear the work area. You need a clear

area all around the tree so you canhave secure footing.

• Study the natural conditions that cancause the tree to fall in a particulardirection. These conditions include:• The wind direction and speed., The lean of the tree. The lean of a

tree might not be apparent due touneven or sloping terrain. Use a

• Weight and branches on one side.• Surrounding trees and obstacles.

• Look for decay and rot. If the trunk isrotted, it can snap and fail toward theoperator.

• Make sure there is enough room forthe tree to fall. Maintain a distance of2-1,2 tree lengths from the nearestperson or other objects, Engine noisecan drown out a warning call.

• Remove dirt, stones, loose bark, nails, staples, and wire from the treewhere cuts are to be made.

FELLING LARGE TREES(6 inches in diameter or larger). The notch method is used to fell largetrees. A notch is cut on the side of thetree in the desired direction of fall. Aftera felting cut is made on the oppositeside of tree, the tree wilt tend to fall inthe direction of the notch.

NOTE: If tree has large buttress roots, remove them before m_.l<ingthe notch.NOTCH CUT AND FELLING TREE• Make notch out by cutting the top.of

• the notch first. Cut through 1/3 of thediameter of the tree. Next completethe notch by cutting the bottom. Seeillustration. Once the notch is cut, re-move the wedge of wood from tree,

Hingeholdstree onstumpand helpscontrolfall

Openingoffellingcut

NOTE: Before felling cut is complete, use wedges, to open the cut whennecessary to control the direction of fall.To avoidkickback and chain damage, use wood or plastic wedges, but neversteel or iron wedges.• Be aled to signs that the tree is ready

to fall: cracking sounds, widening ofthe felling cut, or movement in the up-per branches.

• As tree stads to fail, stop saw, put itdown, and get away quickly on yourplanned retreat path.

- Be extremely cautious with partiallyfallen trees that may be poody sup-ported. When a tree doesn't fall com-pletely, set the saw aside and pulldown the tree with a cable winch, block and tackle, or tractor. Donotuse your saw to cut down a partiallyfallen tree.

CUTTING A FALLEN TREE

(BUCKING)Bucking is the term used for cutting afallen tree to the desired log size.WARNING; Do not stand on the logbeing cut. Any portion can roll causingloss of footing and control. Do not standdownhillof the log being cut.IMPORTANT POINTS• Cut only one log at a time.• Cut shattered wood very carefully;,

sharp pieces of wood could be flungtoward operator.

• Use a sawhorse to cut small logs.Never allow another person to holdthe log while cutting and never hold

• the log with your leg or foot.Do not cut inan area where logs, limbs, and rootsare tangled. Drag logsinto a clear area before cuttingthem.

BUCKING TECHNIQUESWARNING: If saw becomes pinchedor hung in a log, don't try to force it out.You can lose control of the saw result-ing in injury and/or damage to the saw.Stop the saw, drive a wedge of plastic

CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT

WARNING: The chain will be movingduring most of this procedure. Wearyour protective equipment and observeall safety precautions. During the lowspeed mixture adjustment recheck idlespeed after each turn of the screw. Thechain must not move at idle speed.

Carburetor adjustment is critical and ifdone improperly can permanently dam-age the engine as well as the carbure-tor. If you require further assistance orare unsure about performing this proce-dure, call our customer assistance helpline at 1-800-235-5878.

Old fuel, a dirty air filter, dirty fuel filter,or flooding may give the impression ofan improperly adjusted carburetor.Check these conditions before adjust-ing the carburetor. The carburetor has been carefully set atthe factory. Adjustments may be neces-sary if you notice any of the followingconditions:• Chain moves at idle. See "idle Speed"

under adjusting procedure.* Saw will not idle. See "Idle Speed"

and "Low Speed Mixture"under ad-• justing procedure., Engine dies or hesitates when it

should accelerate. See "AccelerationCheck" under adjusting procedure.

* Loss of cutting power. See "HighSpeed Mixture H" under adjustingprocedure.

_There are three adjustment screws onthe carburetor. They are labeled H, L,and T. They are located in the area justabove the primer bulb.CARBURETOR PRESETSWhen making adjustments, do not forcethe plastic limiter caps beyond thestops or damage will occur. If carburetor presets are not needed, proceed to "idle Speed-T."

Turn both m xture screws counter-clockwise until they stop.

-Tum the idle speed screw clockwiseuntil it stops. Now turn counterclock-wise 4-1/2 full turns.

Start motor, let it run for 3 minutes, andproceedto the adjustmentsection, ifengine does not start, refer to trouble-shooting chart or call 1-800-235-5878.if engine performance is acceptable atthe preset positions and there is nochain movement at idle, no further ad-justment is necessary.

ADJUSTING PROCEDURE

idle Speed-TAllow engine to idle. Adjust speed untilengine runs without chain movement orstalling.• Turn clockwise to increase engine

speed if engine stalls or dies.• Turn counterclockwise to decrease

speed. No further adjustments are necessary ifchain does not move at idle speed andif performance is satisfactory.

Low Speed Mixture-LAllow engine to idle. Then acceleratethe engine and note performance. If en-gine hesitates, bogs down, or smokesduring acceleration, turn mixture screwclockwise in t/16-tum increments untilperformance is satisfactory. Repeat thisprocedure as necessary for proper ad-justment. After completing adjustments,/check for acceleration and chain move-ment at idle. Reset if necessary.

High Speed Mix_ture-HDO NOT operate engine at ful! _hrettlefor prolongedpedods while making ad-justments. Damage to the engine canoccur. Make a test cut. Based on per-formance of the saw while cutting, ad-just the high speed mixture setting inl/t 6-turn increments as foliows:• Clockwiseuntilsaw has good power in

the cutwi_ no hesitation.Do notadjustby soundor speed, but judge by howwell the saw performs in the cut.

• Countemlockwise if the saw hasspeed, but dies in the cut or lackspower in the cut.

After completing adjustments, check foracceleration and chain movement atidle. Reset if necessary.Acceleration CheckIf the engine dies or hesitates instead ofacselerating, turn the low speed mixtureadjuslment counterclockwiseuntilyouhave smoothacceleration withno chainmovement at idle. Recheck and adjust asnecessary for acceptable pedormance.
