SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR TABLE SAWSafety is a combination of common sense, stayingalert and knowing how your table saw works. Readthis manual to understand this saw.

BEFORE USING THE SAW:WARNING: TO AVOID MISTAKES THAT COULDCAUSE SERIOUS, PERMANENT INJURY, DO NOTPLUG THE SAW IN UNTIL THE FOLLOWING STEPSHAVE BEEN SATISFACTORILY COMPLETED.

1. Assembly and alignment (See pages 8-20).

2 Learn the use and function of the ON-OFF switch,

guard, spreader, anti-kickback device, miter gauge,fence, table insert and blade elevation and bevel

controls. (See page 21).

3. Review and understanding of all safety instructionsand operating procedures in this manual.

4. Review of the maintenance methods for this saw.

(See page 32).

WHEN INSTALLING OR MOVING THE SAW:

1. AVOID DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENT. Use the

saw in adry place protected from rain Keep workarea well righted.

2. To avoid injury from unexpected saw movement:

a. Put the saw on a firm level surface where there

is plenty of room for handling and properlysupporting the workp_ece.

b. Support the saw so the table is level and thesaw does not rock.

c Bolt the saw to the floor if it tends to siip, walk,or slide during normal use.

d. When us=ngtabre extensions over 24" wide onany side of the saw, bolt the saw to the floor orprop up the outer end of the extension fromthe floor to keep the saw from tipping.

3 Put the saw where neither operators or bystand-ers must stand in line with the saw blade.

4 GROUND THE SAW- This saw has an approved3-conductor cord and a 3-prong grounding typept,Jg. The plug fits grounding type outlets design-

ed for 120 volt 15 amp circuits. The greenconductor in the cord is the grounding wire. Toavoid electrocution, NEVER connect the greenwire to a live terminal.

5. To avoid injury from electrical shock, make sureyour fingers do not touch the plug's met31 prongswhen plugging in or unplugging the saw.

6. To avoid back injury, get help or use recom-mended casters when you need to move the saw.Always get help if you need to lift the saw. Holdthe saw close to your body. Bend your knees soyou can lift with your legs, not your back.

7. NEVER STAND ON TOOL. Serious injury couldoccur if the tool tips or you accidentally hit thecutting tool. Do not store anything above or nearthe tool where anyone might stand on the tool toreach them.

BEFORE EACH USE:

1. Inspect your saw.

a. To avoid injury from accidental starting, unplugthe saw, turn the switch off and remove the

switch key before raising or removing theguard, changing the cutting tool, changingthe setup or adjusting anything.

b. Check for alignment of moving parts, bindingof moving parts, breakage of parts, mounting,and any other conditions that may affect theway it works. If any part is missing, bent, orbroken in any way, or any electrical parts don'twork properly, turn the saw off and unplug thesaw.

c. Replace damaged, missing, or failed partsbefore using the saw again

d. Use the sawblade guard, spreader, and anti-kickback pawls for any thru-sawing (wheneverthe blade comes through the top of the work-p,ece). Make sure the pawls work properly.Make sure the spreader is in line with thesawblade.

e. REM©VE ADJUSTING KEYS AND

WRENCHES. Form habit of checking for andremoving keys and adiusting wrenches fromtoot before turning it on.

f. To avoid injury from jams. slips or thrown pieces

(kickback and throwback):1. USE ONLY RECOMMENDED ACCESSO-

RIES. Follow the instructions that come withthe accessories. Consult the owner's manual

for recommended accessories. The use ofimproper accessories may cause risk of injuryto persons.

2. Choose the right blade or cutting accessoryfor the material and the type of cutting youplan to do.

3. Never use grinding wheels, abrasive cut-offwheels, friction wheels (metal slittingblades) wire wheels or buffing wheel. Theycan fly apart explosively.

4. Choose and inspect your cutting tool carefully.a. To avoid cutting tool failure and thrown

shrapnel (broken pieces of blade), use only8" or smaller blades or other cutting toolsmarked for speeds of 3450 rpm or higher.

b. Always use unbroken, balanced bladesdesigned to fit this saw's 5/8" arbor.

c. When thru-sawing, (making cuts where theblade comes through the workpiece top)always use a 8" diameter blade. This keepsthe spreader in closest to the blade.

d. Do not overtighten arbor nut. Use arborwrenches to "snug" it securely.

e. Use only sharp blades with properly setteeth. Consult a professional blade shar-pener when in doubt.

f. Keep blades clean of gum and resin.5. Adjust table inserts flush with the table top.

NEVER use the saw without the proper insert.6. Make sure all clamps and locks are tight and no

parts have any excessive play.

2. KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN

a. Cluttered areas and benches invite accidents.

Floor must not be slippery from wax orsawdust.

b. To avoid burns or other fire damage, never usethe saw near flammable liquids, vapors or

gases.

Plan ahead to protect your eyes, hands, face,ears.

a. To avoid injury, don't do layout, assembly, orsetup work on the table while the blade is

spinning. It could cut or throw anything hittingthe blade.

AVOID ACCIDENTAL STARTING - Make sure

switch is "OFF" before plugging saw in.

Plan your work

1. USE THE RIGHT TOOL - Don't force tool or

attachment to do a job it was not designed for.

2. Dress for safety:

- Do not wear loose clothing, gloves, necktiesor jewelry (rings, wrist watches). They can getcaught and draw you into moving parts.

- Wear nonslip footwear.

- Tie back long hair.

- Roll long sleeves above the elbow

Noise levels vary widely. To avoid possiblehearing damage, wear ear plugs or muffswhen using saw for long periods of time.

Any power saw can throw foreign objects intothe eyes. This can cause permanent eyedamage. Wear safety goggles (not glasses)that comply with ANSI Z87.1 (shown on pack-age). Everyday eyeglasses have only impactresistant lenses. They are not safety glasses.Safety goggles are available at Sears retailcatalog stores. Glasses or goggles not incompliance with ANSI Z87.1 could seriouslyhurt you when they break.

WEAR YOUR

- For dusty operations, wear a dust mask alongwith the safety goggles.

3. Inspect your workpiece. Make sure there are nonails or foreign objects in the part of the work-piece to be cut.

4. Plan yourcut to avoid KICKBACKS and THROW-BACKS - when a part or all of the workpiecebinds on the blade and is thrown violently backtoward the front of the saw:

- Never cut FREEHAND: Always use either a ripfence, miter gauge or fixture to position andguide the work, so it won't twist, bind on theblade and kickback.

-Make sure there's no debris between theworkpiece and its supports.

- When cutting irregularly shaped workpieces,plan your work so it will not slip and pinch theblade:- A piece of molding, for example, must lie

flat or be held by a fixture or jig that will notlet it twist, rock or slip while being cut. Usejigs, fixtures where needed to prevent work-piece shifting.

- Use a different, better suited type of tool forwork that can't be made stable.

- Use extra caution with large, very small orawkward workpieces:

-Use extra supports (tables, saw horses,

blocks, etc.) for any workpieces largeenough to tip when not held down to thetable top. NEVER use another person as asubstitute for a table extension, or as addi-

tional support for a workpiece that is longeror wider then the basic saw table, or to helpfeed, support or pull the workpiece.

- Never confine the piece being cut off. Thatis, the piece NOT against the fence, mitergauge or fixture. Never hold it, clamp it,touch it, or use length stops against it. Itmust be free to move. If confined, it could

get wedged against the blade and cause akickback or throwback.

- Nevercut morethan one workpieceat atime.

-Never turn your table saw "ON" beforeclearingeverythingexceptthe workpieceandrelatedsupportdevicesoff thetable,

Plan the way you will push the workpiece through.

- NEVER pull the workpiece through. Start andfinish the cut from the front of the table saw.

- NEVER put your fingers or hands in the path ofthe sawblade or other cutting tool.

- NEVER reach in back of the cutting tool witheither hand to hold down or support the work-piece, remove wood scraps, or for any otherreason.

- Avoid hand positions where a sudden slip couldcause fingers or hand to move into asawblade orother cutting tool.

- DON'T OVERREACH. Always keep good footingand balance.

- Push the workpiece against the rotation of theblade. NEVER feed material into the cutting toolfrom the rear of the saw.

- Always push the workpiece all the way past thesawb/ade.

- As much as possible, keep your face and body toone side of the sawblade, out of line with a

possible kickback or throwback.

- NEVER turn the saw "ON" before clearing thetable of all tools, wood scraps, etc., except theworkpiece and related feed or support devicesfor the cut planned.

WHENEVER SAW IS RUNNING

WARNING: DON'T LET FAMILIARITY (GAINEDFROM FREQUENT USE OF YOUR TABLE SAW)CAUSE A CARELESS MISTAKE. ALWAYSREMEMBER THAT A CARELESS FRACTION OF A

SECOND IS ENOUGH TO CAUSE A SEVEREINJURY.

1. Before actually cutting with the saw, watch itwhile it runs for a short while. If it makes an

unfamiliar noise or vibrates a lot, stop immedi-ately. Turn the saw off. Unplug the saw. Do notrestart until finding and fixing the problem.

2. Make sure the top of the arbor or cutting toolturns toward the front of the saw.

3. Set the cutting tool as low as possible for the cutyou're planning.

4. KEEP CHILDREN AWAY. All visitors should be

kept a safe distance from work. Make surebystanders are clear of the saw and workpiece.

5. Let the blade reach full speed before cutting.

6. DON'T FORCE TOOL. It will do the job betterand safer at its designed rate. Feed the workpieceinto the blade only fast enough to let it cut

without bogging down or binding.

7. Before freeing any jammed material:

a. Turn switch "OFF".

b. Unplug the saw.

c. Wait for all moving parts to stop.

d. Check blade, spreader and fence for proper

alignment before starting, again.

8. To avoid throwback of small, cut off pieces:

a. Use the guard assembly.

b. Push loose pieces off the table with a longstick before starting another cut.

c. To remove pieces trapped inside the guard:

1. Turn saw off.

2. Remove switch key.

3. Unplug saw.

4. Wait for blade to stop before lifting theguard.

additional instructions forRIP TYPE CUTS

NEVER use the miter gauge when ripping.Use a push stick whenever the fence is 2 to 6

inches from the blade. Use an auxiliary fence andpush block whenever the fence must be within 2

inches of the blade. (See "Basic Saw OperationUsing The Rip Fence" section.)

Never rip anything shorter than 10" long.When using a push stick or push block, thetrailing end of the board must be square. A pushstick or block against an uneven end could slipoff or push the work away from the fence.

A FEATHERBOARD can help guide the work-piece. See BASIC SAW OPERATION - USINGTHE RIP FENCE. Always use featherboards forany non-thru rip type cuts.

Before Starling

-To avoid kickbacks and slips into the blade,make sure the rip fence is parallel to the sawblade.

- Check theantikickback pawls. (See BASlCSAWOPERATION - USING THE RIP FENCE.) Thepawls must stop a kickback once it has started.Replace or sharpen antikickback pawls whenpoints become dull.

- Plastic and composition (like hardboard) mater-ials may be cut on your saw. However, sincethese are usually quite hard and slippery, theantikickback pawls may not stop a kickback.Therefore, be especially careful in your set-upand cutting procedures.

While cutting

-To avoid kickbacks and slips into the blade,

always push forward on the section of the work-piece between the saw blade and the rip fence.Never push forward on the piece being cut off.

Before starting- NEVER use the rip fence when crosscutting.- An auxiliary wood facing attached to the miter

gauge can help prevent workpiece twisting andthrowbacks. Attach it to the holes provided.Make the facing long enough and big enough tosupport your work. Make sure, however, it willnot interfere with the sawblade guard.

- Use jigs or fixtures to help hold any piece toosmall to extend across the full length of the mitergauge face during the cut. This lets you properlyhold the miter gauge and workpiece and helpskeep your hands away from the blade.

While cutting-To avoid blade contact, always hold the miter

gauge as shown in the BASIC SAW OPERA-TIONS - USING THE MITER GAUGE.

BEFORE LEAVING THE SAW1. Turn the saw off.

2. Wait for blade to stop spinning.3. Make workshop child-proof. Lock the shop. Dis-

connect master switches. Remove the yellowswitch key. Store it away from children andothers not qualified to use the tool.

4. Unplug the saw.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS FOR WOODWORKING

Anti-Kickback Pawls (AKB)Device which, when properly maintained, is design-ed to stop the workpiece from being kicked back atthe operator during ripping operations.

Arbor

The shaft on which a cutting tool is mounted.

Crosscut

A cutting or shaping operation made across thewidth of the workpiece.

Dado

A non-through cut which produces a square sided

notch or trough in the workpiece.

Featherboard

A device which can help guide workpieces during riptype operations.

Freehand

Performing a cut without using a fence, miter gauge,fixture, hold down or other proper device to keep theworkpiece from twisting during the cut.Gum

A sticky, sap based residue from wood products.

Heel

Misalignment of the blade.

KerfThe amount of material removed by the blade in a

through cut or the slot produced by the blade in anon-through or partial cut.Kickback

An uncontrolled grabbing and throwing of the work-piece back toward the front of the saw during a riptype operation.

Leading EndThe end of the workpiece which, during a rip typeoperation, is pushed into the cutting tool first.

MoldingA non-through cut which produces a special shapein the workpiece used for joining or decoration.

Push StickA device used to feed the workpiece through the saw

during narrow ripping type operations and helpkeep the operator's hands well away from the blade.

Push Block

A device used for ripping type operations too narrowto allow use of a push stick.

Rabbet

A notch in the edge of a workpiece.

Resin

A sticky, sap base substance that has hardened.

RippingA cutting operation along the length of the work-piece.

Revolutions Per Minute (RPM)The numberofturnscompleted by a spinning objectin one minute.

Sawblade Path

The area of the workpiece or table top directly in linewith the part of the workpiece which will be, or hasbeen, cut by the blade.

Set

The distance that the tip of the sawblade tooth isbent (or set) outward from the face of the blade.

Throw-Back

Throwing of pieces in a manner similar to a kickback.

Thru-SawingAny cutting operation where the blade extendscompletely through the thickness of the workpiece.

Trailing EndThe workpiece end last cut by the blade in a ripping

operation.

WorkpieceThe item on which the cutting operation is beingdone. The surfaces of a workpiece are commonlyreferred to as faces, ends, and edges.

CONNECTING TO POWER SOURCE OUTLET

This saw must be grounded while in use to protect theoperator from electrical shock.

If power cord is worn or cut, or damaged in any way, haveit replaced immediately.Your saw is wired for 120 volts and it has a plug that lookslike the one shown below.

If the outlet you are planning to use for this saw is of thetwo prong type DO NOT REMOVE OR ALTER THEGROUNDING PRONG IN ANY MANNER. Use anadapter as shown and always connect the groundinglug to a known ground.

It is recommended that you have a qualified electricianreplace the TWO prong outlet with a properly groundedTHREE prong outlet.A temporary adapter as shown below is available forconnecting plugs to 2-prong receptacles. The greengrounding lug extending from the adapter must be con-nected to a permanent ground such as to a properlygrounded outlet box.

A temporary adapter as illustrated is available for con-necting plugs to 2-prong receptacles. The temporaryadapter should be used only until a properly groundedoutlet can be installed by a qualified electrician.

The use of any extension cord will cause some loss of

power. To keep this to a minimum and to prevent

overheating and motor burn-out, use the table below

to determine the minimum wire size (A.W.G.) exten-

sion cord. Use only 3 wire extension cords which have

3 prong grounding type plugs and 3-pole receptacleswhich will accept the too!'s plug.

3. Remove blade insert by lifting slightly and pullinginsert toward front of saw to disengage from keyhole slot.

CHECKING HEELING OR PARALLELISMOF SAW BLADE TO MITER GAUGEGROOVE

While cutting, the material must move in a straightline PARALLEL to the SAW BLADE . . . thereforeboth the miter gauge GROOVE and the RIP FENCEmust be PARALLEL to the SAW BLADE.

If the saw blade is not parallel to the miter gaugegroove, it is said to have "HEEL". This condition cancause the workpiece to bind or move workpieceaway from the rip fence at the end of a cut, possiblycausing a kickback.

WARNING: TO AVOID INJURY FROMACCIDENTAL START MAKE SURE SWITCH IS"OFF" AND PLUG IS NOT CONNECTED TOPOWER SOURCE OUTLET.

1. Elevate blade to maximum height by turningelevation handwheel.

2. Mark an "X" on one of the teeth which is SET(bent) to the LEFT.

3. Place the head of a combination square in theMITER GROOVE. Adjust blade of square so that itjust touches the tip of the MARKED tooth.

4. Move square to REAR, rotate blade to see ifMARKED tooth again touches blade of square.

5. If tooth touches square the same amount atFRONT and REAR, sawblade is PARALLEL toMITER GAUGE GROOVE.

ADJUSTING 90 DEGREE BEVEL STOP

(IMPORTANT: Blade must be square (90 ° ) to tablein order to accurately align the saw. Using care inthe following adjustments will help assure accuratewoodworking cuts.)

WARNING: TO AVOID INJURY FROMACCIDENTAL START, TURN SWITCH "OFF" ANDREMOVE PLUG FROM POWER SOURCE OUTLETBEFORE ADJUSTING BEVEL STOP.

1. Raise blade to highest elevation.

2. Turn bevel handwheel just until it stops undermoderate pressure. Blade should be 90 ° to thetable top.

3. Place a square flush on the table top to the left ofthe sawblade and slide the square up against thebody of the sawblade. NOT against the teeth ofthe blade.

4. The square should be nearly flush with the bodyof the sawblade. When this isso, the sawblade issaid to be 90° with respect to the table top.Notice the bevel pointer on the front of the saw.The pointer should be at 0°.

5. If you feel the blade is not close enough to 90 °with respect to the table top, further adjustmentcan be made by performing the followingoperations.

CHECKING 45 DEGREE BEVEL STOP

1. The 45 ° blade position is controlled by thelocation of the sheet metal nut on end of bevelshaft•

2. If condition A exists the sheet metal nut needs to

3. To correct condition A - Rotate bevel handle

CCW approximately 2 turns, place 11/16 inchwrench on sheet metal nut and hold in placewhile rotating handle counterclockwise in smallincrements. Recheck blade position after eachrotation.

4. To correct condition B- Same procedure as No.3, except, rotate handle clockwise while holdingnut.

5. Check blade clearance by rotating blade by handmaking sure blade does not strike insert or table•

IMPORTANT: The rip fence MUST be parallel withsaw blade and miter grooves in order to help preventKICKBACK of the workpiece when ripping. Carefuladjustment is required.

1. Hold head of rip fence and slide on table until theedge of the fence lines up with the right miter slot.

2. Turn fence lock knob clockwise to lock fence.

3. If fence does not line up with miter slot front andrear:

A. Loosen the two hex screws in top of fence.

B. While holding head of rip fence, move rear ofrip fence right or left until edge lines up withmiter slot.

1. ON-OFF SWITCHCAUTION: Before turning switch on, make surethe blade guard is correctly installed andoperating properly.

The On-Off Switch has a locking feature. THISFEATURE IS INTENDED TO HELP PREVENTUNAUTHORIZED AND POSSIBLE HAZARDOUSUSE BY CHILDREN AND OTHERS.

A. Insert Key into switch.

B. TO turn saw ON... stand to either side of theblade never in line with it... insert finger underswitch lever and pull END of lever out.

After turning switch ON, always allow theblade to come up to full speed before cutting.

Do not cycle the motor switch on and offrapidly, as this may cause the sawblade toloosen. In the event this should ever occur,allow the sawblade to come to a complete stopand retighten the arbor nut normally, notexcessively. Never leave the saw while thepower is "ON".

C. TO turn saw OFF . . . PUSH lever in. Neverleave the saw until the cutting tool has come toa complete stop.

D. To lock switch in OFF position.., hold switchIN with one hand... REMOVE key with otherhand.

5. BLADEGUARD must always be in place andworking properly for all thru-sawing cuts. That is,alt cuts whereby the blade cuts completelythrough the workpiece.

To remove the guard for special operation,loosen both wing nuts, slide spreader back andup DO NOT DISTURB THE SETTING OF THESPREADER SUPPORT BRACKET.When replacing the guard, insert spreaderbetween bracket and clamp and slide forward.TIGHTEN BOTH WINGNUTS SECURELY.

6. TABLE INSERT is removable for removing orinstalling blades or other cutting tools . . .

A. Lower the blade below the table surface.

RIP FENCE... is locked in place by tightening thelock knob. To move the fence, loosen the knoband grasp the fence with one hand at the front.

Holes are provided in the rip fence for attaching awood facing when using the dado head. ormolding head.

Select a piece of smooth straight wood approx.3/4" thick, at least as long as the rip fence, and atleast 7-1/2" wide (high) to permit clamping offeatherboards.

Attach it to the fence with two Round Head #10Wood Screws 2 in. long. To remove the facing,loosen the screws, slide the facing forward andpull the screws through the round holes.

BASIC SAW OPERATIONUSING THE MITER GAUGE

CROSSCUTTING, MITER CUTTING, BEVELCUTTING, COMPOUND MITER CUTTING andwhen RABBETING across the end of a narrowworkpiece, the MITER GAUGE is used.

WARNING: FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY, ALWAYSOBSERVE THE FOLLOWING SAFETYPRECAUTIONS IN ADDITION TO THE SAFETYINSTRUCTIONS ON PAGES 2, 3, and 4.

1. Never make these cuts freehand (without usingthe miter gauge or other auxiliary devices)because the blade could bind in the cut andcause a KICKBACK or cause your fingers orhand to slip into the blade.

2. Always lock the miter gauge securely when inuse.

3. Remove rip fence from table.

4. Make sure blade guard is installed for all "thru-sawing" operations (when sawblade cutsentirely thru the thickness of the workpiece.)Replace guard IMMEDIATELY after completionof dadoing, molding or rabbeting cuts.

5. Have blade extend approximately 1/8 in. abovetop of workpiece. Additional blade exposurewould increase the hazard potential.

11. Do not remove small pieces of cut-off materialthat may become TRAPPED inside the bladeguard while the saw in RUNNING. THIS COULDENDANGER YOUR HANDS or cause aKICKBACK.

Turn the saw OFF. After the blade has stoppedturning, lift the guard and remove the piece.

If workpiece is warped, place the CONCAVEside DOWN. This will prevent it from rockingwhile it is being cut.

WORK HELPERS

Before cutting any wood on your saw, study all ofthe "Basic Saw Operations".

Notice that in order to make some of the cuts, it isnecessary to use certain devices "Work Helpers"like the Push Stick, the Push Block and the AuxiliaryFence, which you can make yourself.

After you have made a few practice cuts, make upthese "helpers" before starting any projects. Makethe "Push Stick" first. To rip the piece for the pushstick, start out with a wide board, say 11-1/2in.wideand set the rip fence 9-3/4 in. from the blade.

Make the Push Stick using a piece of 1 x 2.

Make the Push Block using a piece of 3/8 in. and 3/4in. plywood.The small piece of wood 3/8 in. x 3/8 in. x 2-1/2 in.should be GLUED to the plywood... DO NOT USENAILS. This is to prevent dulling the sawblade in theevent you mistakingly cut into the push block.Position the handle in the center of the plywood andfasten together with glue and woodscrews.

CROSSCUTTING

CROSSCUTTING is cutting wood across the grain,at 90 °, or square with both the edge and the flat sideof the wood. This is done with the miter gauge andblade angle set at"0". The graduations on the mitergauge provide accuracy for average woodworking.In some cases where extreme accuracy is required,when making angle cuts, for example, make a trialcut and then recheck it with an accurate square, orprotractor.

If necessary, the miter gauge head can be swiveledslightly to compensate for any inaccuracy.

NOTE: The space between the miter gauge bar andthe groove in the table is held to a minimum duringmanufacturing.

For maximum accuracy when using the mitergauge, always "favor" one side of the groove in thetable. In other words, don't move the miter gaugefrom side to side while cutting, but keep one side ofthe bar riding against one side of the groove.

REPETITIVE CUTTING

REPETITIVE CUTTING is cutting a quantity ofpieces the same length without having to mark eachpiece.

NOTE: When making repetitive cuts from a longworkpiece make sure it is supported.

1. NEVER USE THE RIP FENCE AS A LENGTHSTOP BECAUSE THE CUTOFF PIECE COULDBIND BETWEEN THE FENCE AND THE BLADECAUSING A KICKBACK.

2. When wnaking repetitive cuts shorter than 6 in.,clamp a block of wood 3 in. long to the table to actas a !ength stop.

CAUTION: When clamping the block, make surethat the end of the block is well in front of thesawblade. Be sure it is clamped securely.

3. Slic_e the workpiece along the miter gauge until ittouches [he block . . . hold it securely.

RABBETING

RABBETING is known as cutting out a section of thecorner of a piece of material, across an end or alongan edge.

To makea RABBET requirescutswhich do not go allthe way through the material. Therefore the bladeguard must be removed.

1. Remove blade guard.

2. For rabbeting along an edge (long way of work-piece) as shown, add facing to rip fence approxi-mately as high as the workpiece is wide. Adjustrip fence and blade to required dimensions; then

make first cut with board flat on table as any rip(type) cut; make second cut with workpiece onedge. Follow all precautions, safety instructions,and operational instructions as for ripping, or riptype operations, including feather boards andpush stick, etc.

3. For rabbeting across an end, for workpiece 10-1/2" and narrower make the rabbet cut with the

board flat on the table. Using the miter gaugefitted with a facing, follow the same proceduresand instructions for cross cutting making succes-sive cuts across the width of the workpiece toobtain the desired width of cut. DO NOT use the

Featherboards are not employed during non thru-sawing operations when using the miter gauge.

Use featherboards for all other non "thru-sawing"operations (when sawblade guard must beremoved). Featherboards are used to keep the workin contact with the fence and table as shown, and tostop kickbacks.

Add 8 inch high flat facing board to the fence, thefull length of the fence.

Mount featherboards to fence and table as shown,so that leading edges of featherboards will supportworkpiece until cut is complete, and the workpiecehas been pushed completely past the cutter(sawblade, dado head, molding head, etc.) with apushstick, as in ripping.

Before starting the operation (switch "OFF" andcutter below table surface):

(a) Install featherboards so they exert pressureon the workpiece; be positive they are secure,and

(b) Make sure by trial that the featherboards willstop a kickback if one should occur.

Replace the sawblade guard as soon as the nonthru-sawing operation is complete.

Rabbet cuts can also be made in one pass of theworkpiece over the cutter using the dado head ormolding head.

2. Remove 10-32 x 11/4pan head screw from guard linkto seperate guard link and guard from bladespreader.

3. Rotate pawl toward rear of spreader so that teeth areabove top of spreader.

4. Hold spreader with left hand and place pawl overcorner or workbench.

5. Sharpen the dull tooth using a few light strokes of afine-cut file.

6. Reassemble guard when finished sharpeningpawls.

LUBRICATIONThe saw motor bearings have been packed at thefactory with proper lubricant and require noadditional lubrication.

The following parts should be oiled occasionallywith SAE No. 20 or No. 30 engine oil.

1. Elevation guide slot and pivot.2. Elevation screw threads.

3. Bevel screw threads (First clean with CraftsmanGum & Pitch Remover.)

4. Bevel and elevation link pivot points.

5. Cradle pivot pin bearing points.

6. Bearing points in miter gauge and rip fence.

The saw table and other major parts are made ofaluminum and require no special care. A coat ofautomobile-type wax applied to the table will help tokeep the surface clean and allow workpieces to slidemore freely. Treat unplated and unpainted steelparts and surfaces with Sears "Stop Rust."
