RULES FOR SAFE OPERATION

READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS

1. KNOW YOUR POWER TOOL -- Read owner's manual carefully. Learn its applica-tions and limitations as well as the specific potential hazards related to this toot

2. GUARD AGAINST ELECTRICAL SHOCK BY PREVENTING BODY CONTACT WITHGROUNDED SURFACES. For example: Pipes, radiators, ranges, refrigeratorenclosures.

3. KEEP GUARDS IN PLACE and in working order.4. KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN. Cluttered areas and benches invite accidents.5. AVOID DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENT. [_on't use power tool in damp or wet tocatins

OPERATIONKNOW YOUR ROUTERBefore attempting to use your router, familiarize yourself with al{ operating features and safety requirementsSee Figure 1

CHIP SHIELDA clear plastic chip shield is installed on the front of your router for protect{on against flying dust and chipsThe chip shield is destgned to fit the front opening of the router base as shown in figure 1 If necessary toremove, squeeze the tabs on each end and pull outward. To replace, squeeze the tabs at each end, fit _nto theopening, then release FOR YOUR PROTECTION DO NOT USE ROUTER WITHOUT CHIP SHIELD PROPERLYIN PLACE.

SWITCHThe switch of your router ts equipped with a "lock-on" feature which is convenient when operating for extend-ed periods of time To lock on, depress the trigger, push in the lock button located on the side of the handle,then while holding the lock button pushed in, release the trigger To release the lock, depress the trigger andrelease it

1 UNPLUG YOUR ROUTER.

2 A spindle lock is located on the front of the motorhousing See Figure 1 To activate lock, push spin-dle lock in and slide into lock position. NEVER AT-TEMPT TO ACTIVATE SPINDLE LOCK WHILEROUTER MOTOR IS RUNNING OR COASTING TOA STOP_

3 Place your router upside down on table, then turncollet nut with wrench until lock mechanism in-terlocks See Figure 2 NOTE: Spindle look is spr-ing loaded and will snap into position when lockmechanism Interlocks

4 Remove cutters by turning coHet nutcounterclockwise enough to allow cutter to slipeasily from collet. See Figure 3 The collet ismachined to precision tolerances to fit cutterswith 1/4" diameter shank size

5 With your router still upside down on table, insertshank of cutter Into collet The shank of your cut.ter should be close to but not touching bottom ofcollet

6 Tighten the collet nut securely by turningclockwise with the wrench provided See Figure 3Put spindle lock back in unlock position Other-wise the interlocking mechanism of the spindlelock will not let your router turn on

We recommend that cuts be made at a depth not ex..¢eedlng 1/8" and that several passes be made toteach depths of cut greater than 1/8"

2 Place your router on a flat surface, loosen clamp-ing wing nut, and adjust until cutter ts Inside sub-base See Figure 4.

3 Turn the depth adjusting rtng until tip of cuttertouches flat surface Turn the depth indicator ringuntil the zero lines up with the Indicator point onthe base See Figure 4

4 Position your router so that the bit san extendbelow the subbase for desired depth setting

5 ]'urn the depth adjusting ring to obtain the desireddepth of cut. The distance the cutter moves canbe read on the depth indicator ring. Eash notch onthe depth adjusting ring indicates 1/64 inchchange in depth setting

6 Tighten clamping wing nut securely beforeoperating router

IMPORTANT: The whole "secret" of professionalrouting and edge shaping I_es in making a carefulset-up for the cut to be made and in selecting theproper rate of feed

FORCE FEEDINGClean, smooth routing and edge shaping can bedone only when the bit Is revolving at a relativelyhigh speed and is taking very small bites to producetiny, cleanly severed chips If your router is forced tomove forward too fast, the RPM of the bit becomesslower than normal in relation to its forward move.ment As a result, the bit must take bigger bites as ttrevolves "Bigger bites" mean btgger chips, and arougher finish Bigger chips also require morepower, which could result in the router motorbecoming overloaded

Under extreme forcefeedtng conditions the relativeRPM of the bit can become so slow -- and the bitesit has to take so large -- that chips will be partiallyknocked off (rather than fully cut off), with resultingsplintering and gouging of the workplece SeeFigure 6.

Your Craftsman Router is an extremely high-speedtool (25,000 rpm no-load speed), and wil! make clean,smooth cuts tf allowed to run freely without theoverload of a forced (too fast) feed. Three things thatcause "force feeding" are bit size, depth-of-cut, andworkptece characteristics The larger the bit or thedeeper the cut, the more slowly the router can bemoved forward If the wood is very hard, knotty, gum-my or damp, the operation must be slowed stillmore

You can always detect "force feeding" by the soundof the motor Its hlgh-pitched whine will sound lowerand stronger as _t loses speed, Also, the strain ofholding the tool will be noticeably Increased

it Is also possible to spoil a cut by moving the routerforward too slowly When tt is advanced Into thework too s!owly a revolving bit does not dig Into newwood fast enough to take a bite; instead, it simplyscrapes away sawdust-like particles Scraping pro-duces heat, which can glaze, burn, or mar the cut --in extreme cases, can even overheat the b_t so as todestroy its hardness

In addition, it is more difficult to control a routerwhen the bit ts scraping instead of cutting Withpractically no load on the motor the bit will be revolv-ing at close to top rpm, and will have a much greaterthan normal tendency to bounce off the sides of thecut (especially, if the wood has a pronounced grainwith hard and soft areas) As a result, the cut produc-ed may have rippled, instead of straight sides SeeFigure 6

"Too-slow feeding" can also cause your router totake off in a wrong direct{on from the intended lineof cut Always grasp and hold your router firmly withboth hands when routing.

You can detect "too-slow feeding" by the runaway,too-highly pitched sound of the motor;, or by feelingthe "wiggle" of the bit in the cut

PROPER FEEDINGThe right feed ts neither too fast nor too slow It Isthe rate at which the bit ts being advanced firmly andsurely to produce a continuous spiral of uniformchips -- wtthout hogging into the wood to makelarge Indlvidua! chips or, on the other hand, to createonly sawdust If you are making a small diameter,shallow groove In soft, dry wood, the proper feedmay be about as fast as you can travel your routeralong your guide line. On the other hand, if the bit Isa large one, the cut is deep or the wood is hard tocut, the proper feed may be a very slow one Then,again, a cross-grain cut may require a slower pacethan an _dentlcal with grain cut in the sameworkpiece

There is no fixed rule. You will learn by experience .....by listening to the router motor and by feeling theprogress of each cut If at all possible, always test acut on a scrap piece of the workplece woodbeforehand

OPERATIONDEPTH OF CUT

As previously mentioned, the depth of cut is impor-tant because if affects the rate of feed which, in turn,affects the quality of a cut (and, also, the possibilityof damage to your router motor and bit) A deep cutrequires a slower feed than a shallow one; and atoodeep cut will cause you to slow the feed so muchthat the bit Is no longer cutting, it is scraping, in-stead

Making a deep cut is never advisable. The smallerbits -- especially those only 1/16 inch tn dlameteT-- are easily broken off when subjected to too muchside thrust. A large enough bit may not be broken off,but if the cut is too deep a tough cut will result --and it may be very difficult to guide arrd control thebit as desired. For these reasons, we recommendthat you do not exceed 1/8 inch depth of cut in asingle pass, regardless of the bit size or the softnessor condition of the workplece See Figure

To make deeper cuts It is therefore necessary tomake as marry successive passes as required, lower-ing the bit 1/8 inch for each new pass. In order tosave time, do all the cutting necessary at one depthsetting, before lowering the bit for the next pass.This will also assure a uniform depth when the finalpass is completed See Figure 8

DIRECTION OF FEED AND THRUST

The router motor and bit revolve in a o_ockw_se directlon. This gives the tool a slight tendency to twist (inyour hands) in a counterclockwise direction,especially when the motor revs up (as at startbrg)

Because of the extremely high speed of bit rotationduring a "proper feeding" operation, there is very lit-tle kickback to contend with under normal condi-tions However, should the bit strike a knot, hardgrain, foreigr_ object, etc that would affect the norms] progress of the cutting action, there will be aslight kickback -- sufficient to spoil the trueness ofyour cut if you are not prepared. Such a kickback isalways In the direction opposite to the direction ofbit rotation

To guard against such a kickback, ptan your set-upand direction of feed so that you will always bethrusting the tool -- to hold it against whatever youare using to guide the cut -- in the same directionthat the leading edge of the bit is moving In short,the thrust should be in a direction that keeps thesharp edges of the bit continuously biting straightinto new (uncut) wood

Whenever you are routing a groove, your travetshould be in a direction that places whatever guideyou are using at the right-hand side in short, when

the guide is positioned as shown in the first part ofFigure 9, tool travel should be left to right andcounterclockwise around curves. When the guide ispositioned as shown in the second part of Figure 9tool travel should be right to left and clockwisearound curves, if there is a choice, the first set-up isgenerally the easiest to use. In either case, thesideways thrust you use is against the guide.

EDGING WITH THE PILOT BITS

The arbor-type bits with pilots are excellent for quickeasy, edge shaping of any workpiece edge that iseither straight or curved at a curvature as great orgreater than the radius of the bit to be used The pilotprevents the bit from making too deep a cut; andholding the pilot firmly in contact with the workpteceedge throughout prevents fhe cut from becomingtoo shallow

Whenever the workplece thickness together with thedesired depth of cut (as adjusted by router depth set.ting) are such that only the tap part of the edge is tobe shaped (leaving at least a 1/16 in thick uncut por-tion at bottom), the pilot can ride against the uncutportion, which will serve to guide it. See Figure !0.However, if the workpiece is too thin or the bit settoo low so that there will be no uncut edge to ride thepilot against, an extra board to act as a guide mustbe placed under the workplace This "guide" boardmust have exactly the same contour -- straight orcurved -- as the workptece edge If tt is positionedso that its edge is flush with the workpiece edge, thebit will make a full cut (in as far as the bit radius) Onthe other hand, if the guide is positioned as shown inFigure 10 (out from the workpieca edge), the bit willmake less than a full cut -- which will alter theshape of the finished edge

PROPER CARE OF CUTTERSGet faster more accurate cutting results by keepingcutters clean and sharp Remove all accumulatedpitch and gum from cutters after each use

A cutter sharpening kit (cat no. 66501) is availablefrom Sears Catalog Order or Retail Stores,

When sharpening cutters, sharpen only the inside ofthe cutting edge Never grind the outside diameter.Be sure when sharpening the end of a cu{ter to grindthe clearance angle the same as originally ground

PROPER CARE OF COLLETFrom time to time, it also becomes necessary toclean your collet and collef nut To do so, simplyremove caller nut from collef and clean the dust andchips that have collected Then return collet nut toits original position

SWITCH REPLACEMENT

1 UNPLUG YOUR ROUTER.

SWITCH REPLACEMENT IS AS FOLLOWS:2 Remove screws (A) and handle cover (C) See

Figure 113 NOTE THE LOCATIONS OF GROMMET (D) AND

ALL WIRING IN THE HANDLE. ALSO NOTE HOWEACH LEAD IS CONNECTED TO THE SWITCH.Connections and wiring position must be iden-tical when insta!ling new switch See Figure 11

4 Remove leads from switch by inserting a !/32"diameter nail or pin into switch lead receptacle asshown in figure !2 and pulling on the leadRemove nail or pin with a twisting, pulling motion

5 Make sure grommet (D) is on cord, then make leadconnections to the new switch Push each lead asfar as possible into proper receptacle in switch,Pull on leads to check lead connections with leadreceptacles

6 Locate switch in handle and place leads so theywon't be pinched or contact screws when handlecover is replaced

7 Make sure grommet (D) is in place and replacehandle cover and screws

8 Tighten all screws securely

LIGHT BULB REPLACEMENT

1. UNPLUG YOUR ROUTER.

2 Remove cutter from router Adjust router to max,!mum height

3 Remove screws (A) and subbase (B) See Figure13

Avoid using solvents when cleaning plastic parts.Most plastics are susceptible to various types ofcommercial solvents and may be damaged by thetruse. Use clean sloths to remove dirt, carbon dust,etc

When electric tools are used on fiberglass boats,sports cars, etc. it has been found that they are sub-jest to accelerated wear and possible prematurefailure, as the fiberglass ch_ps and gdndlngs arehighly abrasive to bearings, brushes, commutators,etc. Consequently it is not recommended that thistool be used for extended work on any fiberglassmaterial During any use on fiberglass it is extremelyimportant that the tool is cleaned frequently by blow-ing with an air jet. ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GOG.GLES, SAFETY GLASSES WITH SIDE SHIELDS, ORA DUST MASK BEFORE BEGINNING POWER TOOLOPERATION OR BLOWING DUST_
