THIS IS A VERY DESIRABLE PROGRAMME, ENABLING YOU TO GROW YOUR CAREER WITH STRONG EVIDENCE OF YOUR CAPABILITY AND PERFORMANCE
2 Greene King Management Development Programme
MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMEThe Management Development Programme supports Assistant, Deputy and Kitchen Managers to develop themselves and their career at Greene King.
This programme has been built around the Advanced Management Apprenticeship to help provide learners with the underpinning knowledge, behaviours and skills required to lead, coach and manage our teams effectively. This will then help to drive our businesses and support our vision of becoming the BEST pub company in the UK.
To support delivering the best development journey possible, learning will be delivered through a combination of workshops, distance learning, self-study, 121 support and onsite training.
WHO’S IT FOR?This programme is for all Assistant, Deputy and Kitchen Managers who have ambitions to develop themselves personally and professionally and progress in their careers at Greene King. If you are looking to progress in approximately 12-18 months and are up for the challenge then this is the programme for you!
WHAT’S INVOLVED?An Apprenticeship at this level needs a high level of commitment and dedication. To take part in this programme you will have been nominated by your Business Development Manager as someone who has the potential and desire to progress. You will also need to take an initial online diagnostic test and complete a 250 word statement prior to enrolment.
The programme is delivered over 15 months, culminating in a finishing school, and by the end you will have gained a Level 3 Apprenticeship.
TO ACHIEVE THIS, YOU WILL NEED TO COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING: A total of 7 off site workshop days
A suite of work based learning assignments
On the job observations and coaching
A number of webinars and mock assessments
As a learner, we will be asking you to commit to self-study outside of the workshops to be able to complete your assignments and projects that will be assessed for your qualification.
Your time, energy and commitment will be well spent as you progress through the programme and begin to reap the rewards as you put your learning into practice.

COMMUNICATION, INFLUENCING & ENGAGEMENTThis workshop is all about communication, from how we communicate to the various methods of communication. You’ll learn about listening skills and engagement through positive management.
An important part of your role as a manager is to be able to clearly articulate the objectives of the business and translate that to your team at an individual level. This workshop will also cover setting expectations and goals, along with conducting performance reviews.
Greene King Management Development Programme 5
WORKSHOPSAttendance on workshops is a mandatory part of your commitment to the Management Development Programme – you will be provided with all dates at the beginning of the programme. If for any reason you cannot attend a given date, you must reschedule onto one of the other available dates scheduled for other groups running in the same timeframe. This will help to ensure that you are able to complete the assignment activity and maintain a manageable workload.
INDUCTION AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENTA full day workshop facilitated by our partners Lifetime Training and a GK Learning Consultant. This session will provide you with all of the detail that you need to know prior to completing your final sign up to the programme. You will have the opportunity to meet a Lifetime Regional Trainer and network with the rest of the AMs/KMs that will be completing the programme with you. You’ll be introduced to the online learning portal you’ll use to submit your assignments and your Lifetime Regional Trainer will outline their role and the support they will provide to you during the programme. You’ll also be given dates for the upcoming workshops that you’ll need to attend.
Your appointment for sign up will be booked in for just after your induction, so that you can enrol onto the course. You’ll complete all the necessary paperwork and you’ll build an individualised training plan with your Lifetime Regional Trainer. You also learn about creating and maintaining a personal development plan, the value of personal feedback and learning styles.
LEADING OUR PEOPLEYou’ll explore the differences between managers and leaders and how this is applied at Greene King. There will be a further investigation into a number of leadership styles and how you can use these to motivate and influence in the workplace.
You’ll also learn about situational Leadership and the benefits that it can bring to you and your team.

RECRUITMENT, SELECTION & ON BOARDINGHaving the right people in our businesses is often one of the greatest challenges that face our managers. This session will look at the tools and processes in place to enable you to recruit great team members who are the future of our businesses.
You’ll be considering how to identify your recruitment needs, how you attract people to your site, selecting the best candidate and the procedures for appointing them – all whilst staying within both legal and ethical guidelines.
You’ll then explore how to ensure that your perfect candidate receives the best on boarding so they choose to stay and grow with you.
DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE TEAMSThis workshop will focus on what you do with your people once you have them in place. You’ll be looking at how a team develops and grows together, what roles individuals play within a team and how to maximise on their strengths.
You’ll also consider the differences between managing a team at an individual level and how you approach feedback and managing performance. This session will cover the link between reward and recognition, exploring how this can be utilised to best affect.
GUEST-CENTRIC LEADERWithout our guests we wouldn’t be much of a business, so ensuring that we deliver the BEST for our guests every single day is an integral part of your role. But you can’t do it by yourself, so you’ll explore the various techniques that will enable you to empower your teams to deliver.
This workshop will explore how we as a business set about delivering to our guests and the key indicators including guest measures and scorecards.
BUSINESS ACUMENThis final workshop will take you through effectively reading and interpreting the P&L, budgeting and delivering key performance indicators
A key part of your role will be to ensure that you are always looking to the future to act on opportunities and stub out threats. As part of this workshop you’ll learn how to create and manage business plans.
Having the right people in at the right time is critical to running an effective business, so you’ll also get to explore deployment and team hours.
FINISHING SCHOOLA final 3 months of activity that will be designed to tie into the GM Induction. This gives us the chance to ensure that successful learners are in the best position to progress to their desired role and assess their readiness for appointment.
ACCESSING SUPPORTThe Management Development Programme is a great opportunity for you to further develop yourself both professionally and personally but to do this, you will need to maximise all of the support avenues available to you.
All candidates have access to research and resources to support their programme via Lifetime’s eLearning platform – all available at the click of a button.
Part of driving your own learning is about seeking support when and where you need it. Take some time to consider where that may come from and where you might need some additional support.
CONSIDER:Line Manager
They’ll have been part of the process from your first application. Take the time to agree with them regular, scheduled catch ups both before and after workshops and throughout the programme. Ensure that you are communicating well and both of you understand the applications of the programme in the workplace.
Business Development Manager
Your BDM will be interested to watch your development during your time on the programme (remember, they are investing in both your time and resource by nominating you to the MDP). Ask to spend time with them discussing your learnings – grab a coffee when they pop in for a visit or schedule time in their diary for a more formal review – you may gain some great insights!
Regional Trainer
Your RT is there to support you with all aspects of your apprenticeship. They will visit you in your site, review your assignments and feedback to you, as well as schedule calls to check on your progress etc… An invaluable resource to you, and one that you can contact at any time for support and advice.
Learning Consultant
Your Learning Consultant will be delivering your workshops. Their job is to ensure you receive all of the learning you need to be able to complete your assignments and apply/implement your new learnings back at your site. Your Learning Consultant will be rooting for you all the way, helping and supporting in any way that they can - you can always drop them a note or give them a call.
Peers and Colleagues on Programme
What better body of people to give you support than those who are experiencing the same things as you. Spend some time creating relationships with and getting to know your fellow MDP students – you’ll be sharing top tips, insights and successes for a long time to come.
Friends and Family
Make sure that you talk to your nearest and dearest about what you are doing – this programme will require you to devote some of your personal time to your studies and assignments. Your friends and family can help support you.

HOW THE MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME HAS ELEVATED GILLIAN’S CAREERGillian Lee, keen to progress her career in management, decided to embark on the Management Development Programme which included completing her Level 3 Leadership and Management apprenticeship. During this time she was promoted from Deputy General Manager to General Manager of the Axe and Cleaver Chef and Brewer in Altrincham.
“I have worked for the company since I was 16 years old, progressing through the stages from team player to a management role in various brands,” explains 31-year-old Gillian. “In recent years the option to progress your career has really become a big focus and clear career pathways have been set for each role in the business which is a real positive for any company as it really focuses on internal progression and training.”
“I really wanted to progress my career, learn new skills and develop myself so I decided to take the apprenticeship route. The programme has taught me new leadership and management theories which in turn have really helped me understand the importance of being a leader. The on-the-job training has meant I’ve developed not only my career but myself too and the networking opportunities have really helped my confidence.”
Gillian says she would highly recommend embarking on the MDP. “It’s an amazing opportunity to develop your career, learn new skills and raise your profile within the company. I am a real believer in training and the current career pathway routes are a fantastic way to enhance people’s skills and knowledge. It helped massively in my progression and I now promote the career pathway and apprenticeship route to all of my team members,” she says.
