Reading comprehension (RC), as the title suggests, tests one’s ability to read, analyze and choose the best possible answer of

the lot. Scoring well in this topic hinges on your ability to differentiate between an answer that is absolutely correct and

one that is just about correct. The options are designed in such a manner that they confuse you to the point where you end up choosing the wrong option. The last thing you would

want to be at any point during your test is to be confused as it sets the tone for the rest of the exam. To avoid doing this, you

will have to practice to an extent where you can intuitively choose the right option. It is akin to building a muscle, and the

Once you are done with reading a passage, as you move on to the questions, ensure that the answer you choose resonates with the tone of the whole passage.Choosing options based on an evidence concluded upon a particular sentence or passage is a definite way of falling into the trap that GRE RC passage writers pride themselves on. As you read through the passage, you will be better off noting the points that seem important as trying to remember everything will make the whole situation more complex, especially during the test.To infer a layered meaning a passage offers requires a lot of practice and there is definitely no way around it. Work on as many passages as you can, and even if you get your answers correctly, always make sure that you take a look at the solutions to gain an insight into the correct approach.

Further, lookout for connecting words in the passage as they offer a lot more than you understand initially. Words like Yet, But, However, Nonetheless and Further change the tone of the passage without prior notice or can be used as a tool to imply the most significant information in the subtlest manner.

While it is imperative that you infer the meaning of a passage, it is advisable to not get lost in unnecessary information, which are purely included to confuse the test taker. While you don’t have to classify information as unnecessary, it is very important that you don’t make your choices based on unwanted data.

Reading Comprehension, while it might seem hard to master initially, once you get a measure of it, you will be surprised at how interesting it is and you will have to be told off by someone to stop working on more. Hence, keep in mind that, while correct answers might give you an indication of how much you have progressed, the penchant to work on more and more passages will give you a clearer picture on your proficiency.
