NEW JERSEY DIVISION OF HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY CRACKDOWN REPORT 2015 YEAR-END HOLIDAY CRACKDOWN • DECEMBER 11, 2015 JANUARY 1, 2016 Police Agency Participation by Year 2006 126 2007 333 2008 424 2009 370 2010 388 2011 422 2012 384 2013 379 2014 380 2015 373 Impaired driving exacts a horrible toll on the roads of our nation and our state. There are more than 10,000 alcohol-impaired motor vehicle fatalities in the Unites States each year, and alcohol-related crashes result in an annual societal cost of more than $37 billion. In 2013, there were 122 alcohol- impaired fatalities in New Jersey, which accounted for 22% of the state’s motor vehicle-related deaths. During 2009-2013, there were 41,127 alcohol-related crashes in the state, which demon- strates the significance of the issue. The New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety (NJDHTS), the state’s law enforcement community, and other traffic safety agencies teamed up from December 11, 2015 - January 1, 2016, to carry out the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over 2015 Year End Holiday Crackdown. The goal of the crackdown was to mobilize New Jersey’s police departments during the critical end-of-year holiday period in a concerted effort to raise public awareness about the dangers of impaired driving through a combination of high visibility enforcement and media activities. NJDHTS invited all 496 police agencies in New Jersey to support the campaign with 148 receiving overtime enforcement grants in the amount of $5,000 each. The remaining agencies were asked to support the crackdown through the use of their own resources. To help spread the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over message, a statewide press release was issued just prior to the start of the crackdown. Police departments were also asked to engage their communities through the dissemination of local press releases and public service announcements, and by displaying Variable Message Boards with the campaign theme. The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over 2015 Year End Holiday Crackdown resulted in 1,724 DWI arrests (alcohol and drugs), down from 2,093 during the 2014 campaign, but still above the 1,575 arrests during the 2013 campaign. In addition, participating police agencies issued 4,558 and 3,083 speeding and seat belt summonses, respec- tively. 75% (373) of New Jersey’s police agencies participated in the crackdown. A number of departments reported noteworthy accomplish- ments during the crackdown, including 18 agencies making 14 or more DWI arrests during the campaign. THE RESULTS
