WHAT’S UPAstronomy in the night sky over Camano by William Maxwell

Our universe is a big place. Really big. It was thought, not that long ago, that Earth occupied a central point in the cosmos and those lights in the sky were tied to not so distant spheres. Then we found out those “wandering stars” were actually planets and those planets did not revolve around us. It was quite the blow to the ego. Then we discovered the Milky Way is actually an enormous col-lection of several hundred BILLION suns, our own residing on one of its outer arms. If we shrink our sun to a grain of sand, the Earth, amicroscopic spec, would be one inch away. Even at this tiny scale, our galaxy would be 100,000 miles across. This, it was thought, mustbe THE universe. Then Edwin Hubble (for which the telescope was named) dis-covered those small faint smudges in the night sky were not gas clouds, but other distant galaxies. Not only were they as large, and larger, than our own galaxy, but the space between them was mind boggling. If we launch a spacecraft at a speed of the fastest human object ever produced, the Helios probe, at 144,000 miles an hour, it would take 10 billion years to reach Andromeda, our closest galaxy neighbor. These galaxies were then discovered to exist in large groups. We live in the Virgo Galaxy Cluster. The above picture is the Coma Galaxy Cluster. All those little smudges are galaxies far distant from our local group. Today we can see to enormous distances, distances that make even galaxy clusters seem microscopic, but there is so much more we can’t see. How big does it go? No one knows for sure, but if you follow the bread crumbs out as far as we CAN go and project the expected pattern to continue...well, its big, really big, maybe infinite. At a minimum there are more galaxies in the entire universe than there are particles in all the universe we can see. If that isn’t enough to make you feel small, there is much evidence to support a multi-verse, a reality in which our entire universe is but a micro-scopic piece. Our entire universe could be only one of perhaps an infinite number of others. So next time the sky is clear and dark, take a look into infinity.

TURN TO LED HOLIDAY LIGHTS THIS SEASON

Snohomish County PUD reminds you of the great value of LED (light-emitting diodes) holiday lights. They use a fraction of the en-ergy used by a standard C7 holiday light or holiday mini-light. And the life expectancy of LED lights is 100,000 to 200,000 hours! Other benefits of LED holidays lights include: If one bulb burns out, the rest of the string stays lit; LED lights are cool to the touch; You can use up to 20 strings together on one circuit The retail cost is around $10 to $15 per string of 70 lights. They are available at many retailers throughout the area. Look and ask for ENERGY STAR LEDs to make sure you are purchasing energy-ef-ficient holiday lights. Other Winter Energy Savers: There are a variety of other easy steps you can take to save energy and keep your home comfortable during the cooler months: Check your crawlspace and attic insula-tion; Seal your ductwork; Seal cracks around doors and windows with weather stripping and caulk Let the sun shine in! Dress warmer when the days get cold-er. Heat only the spaces you’re using. Have your furnace and heat pump serviced. Upgrade to an electronic thermostat. Insulate out-lets and light switches. Install storm windows. Add a ceiling fan to circulate air For more energy saving tips and information about PUD conser-vation programs, visit www.snopud.com/energytips.

The Stanwood Area Histor-ical Society

asks, “Did You Know?”

Excerpts taken from the

“Stanwood Story”, written

for theStanwood News

by Alice Essex.

An editorial in the Tidings of that period indicates the 1905 mood toward discipline. It reads as follows: “If you want to ruin your boy, just take his side on every question and dispute he has with neighbors and teachers. Just let him know you are with him, right or wrong, in all these disputes. This will give him a good start on the downward path.” The city fathers apparently had their own ideas about youngsters on the downtown streets at night. That same September, the curfew ordinance went on the town’s minute book as law. It barred youths from the streets after 8 p.m. between October 1 and March 1, and set the deadline at 9 o’clock between March 1 and October 1. “Upwards” was the keynote of the business picture as Stanwood rang out 1905 and the Tidings applauded the progress of incorpo-ration years in a front-page resume that listed business enterprises in operation. Five general stores, four confectionary stores, four restaurants, three hotels, bank, drug store, hospital, tailor, two barbers, photographer, two meat markets, newspaper, hardware store, jewelry store, black-smith and harness shops, livery stable, carpenter, millinery, furniture store, novelty store, bakery, bicycle shop, five saloons, schools, two churches, opera house lodge rooms and three other halls, city hall, Mutual and Sunset telephone exchanges. Besides these there were two mills in town, six more within two miles and five more in outlying area. The five more distant ones were given as the John Hals Shingle Mill, capacity 150,000 feet and 10 men employed; Manley & Church Shingle Mill, capacity 65,000 feet and 14 employees; Benedict’s Shingle Mill, capacity 60,000 feet and 12 em-ployees; Cedarhome Lumber Company, capacity 75,000 shingles and 20,000 feet of lumber with 30 employees. Come March 1906, a new shingle mill was about to begin opera-tions on Lake Goodwin, twenty-five men would be employed and a general store was under construction for convenience of mill families, who were already moving in. The mill’s capacity was listed as 200,000 shingles per day and a dry kiln capacity of 2,100,000. Two good-sized logging camps were also opening on Camano Island where there would be work for 20 more men. At Joe Heel’s Bay, Manager Jim Wood claimed he had 2,000,000 feet to cut, which would mean about a year’s work for his crew of 20 men. Accounts state that here was a great demand for logs, prices were high and the future was bright. The big event of spring 1906 came March 30, when Stanwood’s first electric lights were turned on in downtown streets and certain resi-dential areas. The event called for a celebration and celebration there was, with the Stanwood Brass Band at Main and Market Streets where the company had a strung a row of lights. Said the Tidings: “The weather was perfect and all who were not sick or dead were on the streets for the formal turning of the switch. Everybody was happy, except the chronic grumbler who still thinks a candle is good enough for him.” Franchise for the lights had been granted in 1905 to Clint B. Knox and F. Query, who became proprietors of the Stanwood Light and Power Company. Townspeople subscribed to secure the site from S. A. Thompson. It bordered on Irvine Slough. The plant boasted a 100-horsepower engine and a 50-kilowatt Thompson Houston dyna-mo that carried 1,200 lights. The installation represented an outlay of $5,000.

THIS IS GLUTEN FREE!

The Flatheads were gathered at the Diner last Wednesday, their weekly vintage car guyz breakfast that gave the parking lot the feel of a time machine run amok. Most Wednesdays the boyz order ‘the usual’ from Anita or Brenda, both waitresses pretty versed in their preferences. But this last Wednesday Vee Dub Danny asked Brenda if he could get gluten-free toast instead of his usual wheat.

He might as well have backfired a sausage fart. The three tables jammed together stopped what they were saying and all eyes turned on Vee Dub. “What did I do?” he asked the breakfasteers. “I’m just trying to cut out gluten. Jeez … you never heard of what allergies?”

Oh, the Flatheads had heard of it all right, they just didn’t believe in it and they certainly didn’t believe Vee Dub had it. “You been eating wheat toast and extra butter every week for years, Danny,” Jerry told him. “Next week you’ll have lactose intolerance.”

“Actually …” Vee Dub started to say but stopped when half the Flatheads smirked at what they thought was coming. Brenda, ever efficient, could see the orders bottlenecking like Seattle traffic. “Maybe take the rye, “she suggested helpfully, but when Vee Dub asked if it had wheat, she said she’d have to look at the ingredients on the bag.

“Take a risk, Dan,” a voice shouted from downwind, “we got to eat before lunch.”

Vee Dub started to look over the menu, probably the first time in years, but he faltered under the collective silence and Brenda’s waiting pencil. “Rye toast,” he announced to the assembled me-chanics in a determined voice, then added quietly, “but hold the butter.”

It’s difficult to determine, on the unforgiving South End, if ciliac dis-ease is as epidemic as the 1% of the outside population who are diagnosed with it, but I did noticed the Diner doesn’t serve glu-ten-free anything. Anyway, I figure most indigestion is from too much of their coffee. And peer group pressure.

KARLA KAY BENJAMIN

“My name is Karla Kay Benjamin. I am an artist that specializes in hand painted silk and deluxe coloring posters inspired by my hand painted silk designs. While I am a native of the PNW, I attended col-lege at Arizona State University and have a BFA with an emphasis in Fiber Arts/Surface Design. I enjoy working on fabric because when the fabric moves it seems to bring the art to life. I work on silk be-cause of the beautiful way it absorbs the dyes and shimmers when it moves and the light hits it. You will see both nature and animal themes in my work. I like the outdoors and this is reflected in my art. I took woodworking in college and Native American wood carv-ing from Ralph Bennett (Haida). You will see 3 dimensional images in my drawing reflective of this work. Handpainting silk is a multi-step process. I start with silk fabric which I cut to size. I wash it to make sure it dyes correctly.. I stretch the silk on a frame. I use a resist (gutta/wax) to draw the lines of the design on the silk. I then use silk dyes to color them.. When the painting is complete, the fabric is steamed to make the dyes permanent. I wash the fabric again to get rid of excess dye and hang to dry. The silk is then ready to be sewn and marketed. The deluxe coloring posters I make came along as an accident. I was posting pictures my hand painted silk process online and people asked me if they could color in my designs themselves. Voila - Karla Kay Art Deluxe Coloring Posters were born. I produce a limited amount of posters of each design. This way you are getting a unique piece of art to make your own by coloring it in vs. coloring in a mass-produced image. My choice of markers for coloring the post-ers in is Copic Markers. Copic makes a blending marker that allows the markers colors to blend together that I find to be very useful.

CINNAMON STICK TREE ORNAMENTSA super fun and simple ornament tutorial, and it’s kid friendly too! Cinnamon Stick Tree Ornaments.

SUPPLIES: 3” Cinnamon Sticks; 3/4” Canadian Pine Garland, Assort-ed Buttons; Glue Gun; Wire Cutters; Twine or Hemp Cord; Ruler

DIRECTIONS: Let’s get started by prepping all the materials. Now is a good time to plug in your glue gun too — get her warmed up. Cut 7” pieces of twine and 1”, 2” and 2-1/2” pieces of your Canadian pine garland, using your wire cutters, for the number of ornaments you wish to make. Once you have your pieces cut, you’re all set to start assembling! Let’s start by gluing the pine to the cinnamon stick, placing the shortest piece (1”) at the top, then the 2” piece, followed by the 2-1/2” piece. You’ll now want to glue the twine to the back of your cinnamon stick as well. Glue on pine pieces. Once you’ve completed that, it’s time decorate our tree ornaments. YAY! Glue on your buttons. I placed mine at the top and on each side of the branches. The possibilities are endless — you can add sequins, pom poms, glitter, and more.

CHRISTMAS LIGHT RECYCLINGIt’s that time of year when your bins and boxes full of Christmas or-naments and lights are pulled out of the attic or garage, and you go through the task of testing the light strings before putting them on the tree. When they don’t work, you try jiggling the bulbs to see if you can get them to light up. What to do with those that are no lon-ger working? Instead of throwing them into the trash, bring them to the Island County Annex on Camano for recycling! A recycle bin for strings of lights, as well as computer cords you no longer need and electrical extension cords, will be in the lobby of the Island Coun-ty Annex from November 20th through January 19th. WSU Waste Wise volunteers will make sure they are taken to a responsible local recycler, saving them from ending up in the landfill. The Annex is located at 121 N. East Camano Drive, across the street from Camano Storage, and is open from 8 am – noon, and 1 – 3 pm. Questions? Call Waste Wise at (360) 678-7974.

ELEGY FOR MY CAT PURR FURR – By Gloria Kathan

I was my catMy cat was meThe two of us were sort of threeShe was one, I another...Together we kind of made an other

Little prayer Partner’s goneOn my chest, a purr-hymned songWhen in my darkness, spirit prayedThe Holy Comforter, cat-shaped laid

Little sister’s gone awayWe played house every dayMorning time for tea and smeltWe both supped in skin & pelt

Little Watch-Cat through the nightWhen alone, our ears pricked frightWe huddled in our fur-spiked coversAnd blamed the noises on each other

Mother cat was she to meAs if I’d dropped from furry kneeWhen lying ill upon my bedSoft, warm, purr, nudge head to head

Little Cat-child baby goneClever toy face of fawnI cradled you in rocker armsAnd sang you songs of fishing farms

House-spouse, Soulmate, Kitty CattimsParadise home like Eve and Adam’s‘Til serpent sin of Death came inAnd took my lovely Purr-cat-kin

Now I have myself aloneNo more two of us ingrownOnly white and gray furred spikesWoven in from Purr Furr Nights.

writer living on Camano Island. From Parenting to Pop culture

to Pets, Tim has something profoundly un-informed to say

about it.

MY SISTER’S PLOT TO KILL ME [The following is a true story.] One of the following is something I have NEVER done. Can you guess? Eaten oysters OR Driven 1,300 miles with a rabbit OR Gone skinny dipping OR Jumped out of an air-plane? If you guessed, “eaten oysters” you are correct. But also, a shout out to my many supportive fans who wrote in “humor writing”. Yes, I jumped out of an airplane. But don’t worry. Many of you will be glad to know I survived. It wasn’t even my idea. You can blame my sister for this reckless fiasco. For purposes of this story, and out of respect for my sister’s privacy, I’m going to refer to her as “Betsy” because, first, that’s her name, and second, I don’t give a rat’s bum about her privacy. One day, for reasons unfathomable to me, Betsy quipped, “Hey, let’s go skydiving!” I could only deduce she was off her meds. I replied as any loving, older brother would – I berated her for being an idi-ot. But my sister can be extremely persuasive, by which I mean she questioned my masculinity. Eventually, after badgering me for what seemed like three days, but probably was closer to eleven minutes, I caved. Betsy discovered a skydiving outfit in a rural community, where cows outnumber people 50 to 1. We took an intensive full-day crash-course on skydiving, which culminated in a static line jump out of a Cessna from 5,000 feet. At noon, the class broke for a 45-minute lunch. It took longer than expected for my Last Meal to be served, so Betsy and I arrived back 15 minutes late. I figured, we couldn’t possibly have missed anything im-portant in that short interval. Turns out, I was mistaken – perilously so. After seven hours of training, the energy of these thrill-seekers was palpable. But all I could think was, “How in the world did I let my crazy, impulsive sister corral me into doing such a daredevil act of insani-ty?” Like the cows that surrounded the airstrip, we were herded onto single-engine planes in groups of three. I wanted to crawl under my bed covers with my childhood teddy bear, Sparkles. Then suddenly, BAM! The jump master slammed the door shut. An instant later, we were airborne. In minutes, we climbed to jumping altitude. Then came the mo-ment of truth. The jump master pulled open the door. I started to feel faint. The sound of the rushing wind was deafening. At that moment, I finally saw my sister for the evil being she truly was. She was trying to kill me. I could hear a voice beckoning me. It was the jump master, yelling, “Who wants to go first?” Betsy shouted “I DO! I DO!” Okay, so maybe she was plotting a murder-suicide. It was all so confusing.

Before I knew it, Betsy jumped out the door, screaming with glee. I sighed in despair knowing the very last words I’d ever speak to my sister were, “Oh, crud.” Then it was my turn. All I could think about was “How did I get here?” and “Did I remember to put my clothes in the dryer before I left?” You think the most random thoughts in the moments before your certain death. Terrified, I leaped into the sky. For three seconds, I felt the rush of air in my face. Suddenly, the static line pulled my ripcord and my chute opened… sort of. Remember the part about what could I pos-sibly miss that was so important by arriving late to the afternoon ses-sion? Turns out this is the part I missed – where they discussed what to do if your chute doesn’t open! Technically, my chute DID open. But only partially. The cords were twisted so tightly around themselves that the chute wouldn’t fully open to slow my descent. The precarious situation I found myself in even has a name: a barber pole – which I could easily have remedied had I arrived back from lunch on time. Fortunately, the instructor was on the ground shouting at me through a megaphone:

Ground: Hey, jumper, you’re stuck in a barber pole!Me: What’s that? What do I do?Ground: Remember what we went over in class right after lunch? Just do that.Me: Great...

As I was plummeting to earth, he frantically explained I had to rock myself in a counter-clockwise direction to unravel the cords. It worked. I got my chute to open fully just in time for a very bumpy, hard landing. The good news is I safely landed right on the target. The better news is that my sister veered way off course and ended up in a corn field half a mile away. Serves her right for coming up with her nefarious scheme. So, the take-away from this story should be obvious: Never listen to my sister. She just might be plotting to kill you. Probably not. But why take chances?

“HEALING FORESTS”: POTENTIAL POLICY?

“The international society is in pursuit of sustainable forest man-agement — to optimize various forest functions, for both the pres-ent and next generations…we continue to manage forests sus-tainably, to improve broader multiple functions and values of our forests” — Dr. Shin, Forest Minister of South Korea.

• South Korea has embraced the “medicalization of nature” to the extent where thirty-four “Healing Forests” have been planned near major towns. Approximately 500 health rangers (as opposed to forest rangers) are hired in the “Cradle-to-Grave: Life with Forests” policy. For persons of all ages, forest medicine/therapy programs have been developed for: prenatal mothers; persons with illness; disabled persons; youth; kindergarten; workers; veterans; seniors, and families.

One health ranger says, “Of course we still use forests for timber, but it is the health area that is the fruit of our forests now”.

Dr. Shin affirms: “we are working under the vision of creating a “green welfare nation”, where forests bring happiness to our peo-ple. By establishing a virtuous cycle of various benefits from forests, our goal is to make forests lively places where people live, work and play.  We manage our forests in a well-balanced way, between re-source development and restoration, contributing to the national economy, as well as improving quality of life.”

Many overseas governments promote “nature experiences” as pub-lic health policy. Finland prescribes 40-minute walks on “power trails” that encourage mindfulness and reflection. Switzerland has “forest kindergartens” where children spend time in the woods, fos-tering self-confidence/ independence.

In short, what would our communities look like — if we had Healing Forests and programs for all ages — with a vision for “green welfare”

SALTED CARAMEL COCONUT THUMBPRINTCOOKIESDelicious shortbread cookies, rolled in coconut, filled with sweet cara-mel, and a pinch of sea salt, Enjoy!

COOKIES: 1 3/4 c. sweetened shredded coconut; 1 lg. egg, beaten; 1 c. cold unsalted butter, diced into small cubes; 1/2 c. granulated sugar; 1/4 tsp. salt; 2 tsp. real coconut extract; 2 c. all-purpose flourCARAMEL FILLING: 28 Kraft soft caramels; 3 1/2 T. heavy cream; Coarse Sea Salt, for sprinkling

DIRECTIONS: 1. COOKIES: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line 3 baking sheets with parchment paper. 2. Pour coconut into a small mixing bowl; set aside. In a separate small bowl, whisk egg until well blended; set aside. 3. Add butter, sugar and salt to the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Beat on medium speed until well combined, scraping down the bowl occa-sionally. Pour in coconut extract. With mixer on low speed slowly add in flour and mix just until combined. 4. Scoop out dough an even tablespoon at a time and shape into balls. Roll each dough ball in egg mixture then roll in coconut, gently pressing coconut onto cookies to help it stick better. 5. Transfer cookies to prepared baking sheets spacing at least 1-1/2 inches apart. Make indenta-tion in each cookie with your thumb or forefinger. Transfer baking sheet to freezer and chill for 10 minutes, or refrigerate 30 minutes. 6. Transfer 1 baking sheet to oven and bake for 8-9 minutes. Re-move from oven and re-indent cookies using the back of a rounded 1/2 teaspoon (at this point, if the coconut is browning too much your oven probably cooks too hot, simply tent the cookies with foil and proceed as directed). 7. Return cookies to oven and continue to bake for an additional 8-9 minutes until the coconut is golden brown on edges and cookies have baked through. Cool on bak-ing sheet for several minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. CARAMEL FILLING: Add caramels and cream to a small microwave safe bowl; heat mixture in the microwave for 30 second intervals, stirring well between intervals, until the caramel filling is melted and smooth. Cool caramel for a minute or two, then spoon caramel into the indentations in the cookies. Sprinkle caramel light-ly with sea salt before it starts to set. Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature. Yields 32 cookies.

UNDERSTANDING THE FLUInfluenza, which is commonly called ‘The Flu,’ is a viral infection that attacks your respiratory system — your nose, throat and lungs. Influ-enza is NOT the same as stomach flu viruses that cause diarrhea and vomiting. It’s easy to get the Flu! The virus travels through the air in droplets when someone with the infections coughs or sneezes. The Flu virus is now on surfaces wherever this infected person has been. That’s why wearing a mask when coughing or sneezing is so important! It helps protect those around you. It is thought that people with the Flu are contagious 1 day before they have symptoms and up to 10 days after their symptoms start. How do you know you have ‘The Flu’ and not a cold? You may start feeling like you have a typical cold, but then suddenly become very ill and develop a fever over 100. Chills, body aches, cough & fatigue are common. Rest, plenty of fluids and Tylenol to reduce fever will help you feel better. Call your Doctor if you are at risk for developing complications from influenza. This includes anyone who is taking medication that weakens the immune system (for exam-ple cancer drugs) or anyone with a chronic condition such as asthma, diabetes or heart problems. Ask your Doctor if you might benefit from an Antiviral medication. Influenza viruses are constantly changing. If you’ve had influenza in the past, you have already made antibodies to fight that particular strain of the virus. But antibodies against flu viruses you’ve encountered in the past CAN NOT protect you from new influ-enza subtypes which can be very different from strain of Flu you had before. An annual Flu shot, and frequent hand washing, are your best defense against influenza. If you have health questions, drop by to see me. My schedule is available at the reception desk. - Carol Boswell, RN Wellness Nurse, Stanwood Community & Senior Center
