Since 2002 my wife Lis and I have been runningthe Crab Line then after selling it to see it closedown after only a few months, I decided to setup the Crab Tales about 12 months later ratherthan see it die.

It is been both hard work and I would add goodfun getting to know several hundred great local

people who have either advertised or featured inarticles, along with those who have submitted photos, articles, letters & events for the paper.

I have now decided to hand over the Crab Talesand from the next issue out on October 30th the paper will be run by Liz King, Dennis & Sal.

I wish them all the very best in running this popular localfree paper.

Lis, who has beensetting the paper  since issue 04 ofthe Crab Line has done a great jobdoing the layout& design of mostof the ads as wellas dealing with allthe Regular and

Special Eventsfor each andevery issue.

Above: Sal, Liz & Dennis learning the ropes.

It has been a great deal of fun getting to knowthe advertisers that we have attracted into the

paper over the years, but I have been doing itlong enough to hand over to another team.Since I stepped back, when Liz King took over more of the Advertising work, my poor wife hashad to do a lot more work, not only doing the dayto day bookeeping as well as all the typesettingand proof reading and she has now decided ithas become too much especially as she is dueshortly for a hip operation and long hours onthe computer do not help.

I am very pleased to say that the new team whowill produce future editions of the Crab Tales

will be keeping to the format & content that our readers are used to and will not be making anychanges, there may well be fewer mistakes in the editorial as Dennis will be in charge of  Above: At the Election count in May.

Dear Editor,Isn’t it funny how those who are most nostalgicabout the second Great War are those peoplewho didn’t live through it. My parents didand they said it was rubbish.

The report of the Sheringham 1940’s nostalgiaweekend by Dennis and Sal has prompted meto share with your readers something writtenabout the English by John Bright in 1853.

According to Bright we had allowed ourselvesthe “comforting delusion” that we were a

that and as someone who has written and published several books he will nd it easy.

Liz King has been doing excellent work with usfor almost a year by nding new advertisers whoare all very pleased with the response they aregetting and she will continue her good work.

Sal, Dennis’ wife will be helping him to coverevents by taking photos and checking names.I wish them all the very best for a long andhappy future of many more Crab Tales inthe years to come.

Meanwhile I will be contacting all our loyal

advertisers, many of whom have been withus since day one, with new bank detailsand contact names and addresses.

We will also supply the new team with all thecontact details for those readers who regularlysend us articles, photos and press releases.

For new submissions please use contact details below. We will forward e-mails on but it willsave us work & ensure that copy dates are notmissed to use the NEW contacts.

Thank you everyone for your support andencouragement over the years.

Dear Editor,I have launched a campaign called Every Child Deserves An Advent Calendar. I also launchedthe campaign on Facebook, under the same name.

With the support of Morrisons in Cromer and theCromer & District food bank, which covers allof North Norfolk I am aiming to add an adventcalendar for every food parcel over Christmas

because every child deserves an advent calendar!

I am asking people to help the campaign bydonating an advent calendar and taking it toone of the collection points.

Calendars can be dropped off from now untilFriday 13th November at these collection points: Morrisons in Cromer, Panache HairSalon in Cromer or at your local food bank.

Children who’s parents rely on donations fromfood banks may not get one for 2 simple reasons.

The rst is that people don’t think to donateadvent calendars as they are considered aluxury item and secondly they simplycannot afford to buy one.

In this ever changing economy none of us knowwhen we may need to use a food bank and as a

parent, how would I feel if something that I havealways managed to give my child I cannotafford any longer. This is my reason forthis campaign.

Although this campaign covers the Nth Norfolkarea, anyone can donate or contribute to theirown local area.

The Campaign has been running since October1st and runs until November 13th so that theCromer and District Foodbank have time todistribute to their clients all over the area ingood time so that the children can use themfrom 1st December. Once this area has beencovered any extra calendars will be passedon to the neighbouring food banks.

The campaign has so far received a great responsethat is growing & growing but I need your helpto get this out there and to make a difference.

We need to educate our children that not every

child has what they have, which is why mydaughter has decided to have one adventcalendar this year and donate the othersthat she receives to this great cause!

Kind Regards

Kerrie Wisbey

Dear Editor,Re: Trafalgar slope

I read with interest the article in Crab Talesabout Trafalgar slope. I am very fortunate toown a chalet in Mundesley and visit as oftenas possible. My husband and I would be veryhappy to make a nancial donation to thereinstatement of this cliff path.

Has a fund been set up yet? I look forward toreading the next update on what we considerto be an asset to this lovely village.

Thank you,

“peace-loving people”. On the contrary, heargued: “We have been the most combative andaggressive community that has existed sincethe days of the Roman dominion. Since therevolution of 1688 we have expended... millionsof money upon wars, not one of which has beenupon our shores, or in defence of our hearthand homes.’For so it is’, says a not unfriendly foreign critic, ‘other nations ght at or neartheir home territory: the English everywhere’”.

If Dennis and Sal are to be believed many folkat Sheringham were looking forward to a thirdGreat War. Oh dear. There will be no morenostalgia weekends after that.

Yours sincerely

Philip Graham.

Often this fact is not disclosed until after thetenants have moved in.

We are highlighting the misery this is causingin the vain hope that humanity and commonsense will prevail.

In the meantime we will do our best toaccommodate this growing evil practice, but resources are not limitless.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Rees

Dear Editor,About With Friends threw a cocktail party forsome of its volunteers on Friday 25th Sept. atits Community Café in Cromer.

Around 25 people turned up to taste a rangeof cocktails mixed by AWF member KimJames which included Mohitos and BlueLagoons along with their mocktail (Non-alcoholic) equivalents.

There a was also an array of canapes made bycafé staff and served by member Matt Pratt.

About With Friends relies on volunteers tosupplement its services and whom the charitycouldn’t function. As they use volunteers acrossall its services there are vacancies seven daysa week daytime and evenings.

This involves supporting members in work-related tasks such as catering or gardening;supporting children & young people at play;accompanying adults on social outings orhelping them with shopping or accounts.

Some volunteers come in 2 or 3 times a week, others only volunteer once a month or so. Formany, volunteering has been a stepping stoneto nding paid work in the sector.

If you would be interested in volunteering atAbout With Friends please contact Su Lee on:01263 515 230 or [email protected]

The work of Dreamstone’s Productions, run byJo and John Berry from Mundesley was simply brilliant with nearly everyone dressed in Forty’sgear and very much taking part in this Who Done It  mystery of fun.

Within a matter of half an hour I decided thatMichelle Le Appy (above) was guilty of thesemurders before they ever happened.

An hour later I changed my mind and decidedthat Private Frank Spencer (Above) had shotone of the victims on the platform in Holt

and the other at Weybourne Station. All the actors and actress did a very misleading but great job of trying to decide who did it evenmore impossible to work out. Meanwhile weenjoyed a delicious dinner with a couple of bottles of wine.

No one near us got it right and on our return toSheringham just after 10.30 we were told thatMichelle Le Appy, played by Lorna Miller-Fink had murdered both Capt Waryman (Ian Miller)and Col (Lord) Blithering-Platt.

These Murder Mystery evenings are great funeven if you don’t guess who the culprit is.

The next 3 evenings on the Poppy Line this year

are booked up but visit Dreamstone’s website:www.dreamstoneproductions.co.uk for nextyear’s dates and do go to one of these brilliant productions and enjoy taking part.

Thank you everyone involved for a great eveningof fun. It really is a 10 out of 10 event, as these photos (mostly by) Chloe Baker-Cooper show.

Sheringham TouristInformation Centre

The NNDC has handed the Information Centreover to North Norfolk Railway, paving the wayfor a newly redeveloped TIC and toiletfacilities & improved opening hours.

The transfer was dependent on a successfulCoastal Communities Grant bid by the NNRfor £450,000 for a wider development of thesite at Sheringham, awarded in January 2015.

Following the handover, NNR will demolishthe toilets at Station Approach together withthe TIC and rebuild a new shop, ofce, TICand toilet facility. NNR will run the TIC andthe toilets and has committed to re-openingthe facilities in April 2016.

It is expected that the new TIC will be run byrailway staff and will open throughout the year.

Temporary toilets that have been installed onthe Station Approach car park will be available for the duration of the project (subject to

opening hours).Work will start immediately to ensure the newfacilities & new shop for the Railway will beavailable from April 2016.

Californian FunFun FunWe enjoyed a fantastic night of California summer harmonies when we attended a sold-out show atWoodland Camp Clubhouse to see and hear the

wonderful UK Beach Boys.

If one closed ones eyes, one could be transportedto the sandy beaches and balmy winds of thewestern state, the sound being so true tothe original.

The group is made up of Ian Baker, whose brother Adrian is, at this moment, in America touringwith the American Beach Boys; Dacre Peck;Ben Whiston and the drummer Paul Johnson.

The sound they produce without the aid of backing tapes or other paraphernalia that sodemeans live acts, (lip-synching anybody?)

is truly remarkable. The UK Beach Boys are as good as the real thingand one of the few tribute bands that haveactually appeared on stage with the originals.

We look forward to a possible return for thisinternationally successful band so that wecan all, once again, sing along with thesongs and enjoy the days of youth.

Thank you to them and all thosewho organised the evening.

The Catering Manager Mike Watson was thenappointed the General Manager and we carriedon throughout the season with lots of organ music played in the ballroom by myself, horseshoe pitching & swimming galas...where I wouldalways get thrown in the pool fully dressed.

What used to infuriate the entertainers was theadmin staff who at times would blatantly walkacross the dance oor stage area while we were performing.........it was the height of ignorance.

Some of the staff were fab though like Otto thelifeguard who couldn’t swim who was a bit of awomanizer & Derrick the maintenance manager who used to go crazy if we had the ballroomlights on during the day time.

Ray Dent was the bar manager and a reallynice gentleman to know.

We nished another season with pride and were under the impression we were to return butsadly none of us were asked.

I continued as a organist back in Loughboroughuntil the season started and progressed onwardsto entertainments directors level.

My mother Diane loved the town and the campand its people and so it was agreed that she andmy dad should retire to Mundesley but sadly

I lost my mum in 1999 but the memory thatI hold of her is in this quiet sleepy placeand the camp.....

God Bless Mundesley folks.

Thanks to Paul Long, Organist Entertainer, for this article. I gather that Paul will soon bevisiting Mundesley so hope he enjoys it.

more and more in love with this little campand its occupants and in Mundesley.

Sadly the camp was placed into receivership andHolimarine and its assets were frozen so it wasthen hit and miss whether our jobs were safe.

Thankfully we saw the whole season throughand nished our contract with pride in November after a very long season.

The next year, 1993, I received a call from JohnCarr asking me to return, back to the camp, butheadlined with 2 new Entertainment ManagersRichard & Sonia Taylor, who in a previouscapacity, were Entertainment Managershere a few years before me.

Of course I accepted and yet again off we drovefor my 2nd season. When I was introduced tothe team of Bluecoats it was quite clear theyhad never performed the role of holiday hostand I was promoted to Chief Bluecoat, as I previously performed this role for at least15 years at Butlins as a Redcoat.

As the season started I heard a rumour that JohnCarr had been relieved of his duties as GeneralManager, which saddened me, he was a fneupstanding honest man who saw the camp sinkand brought it back to the surface. I’ll neverforget John, he was a true inspiration to meand in how to manage people.

COMES OUT

October

My Storyby Paul Long

In mid January1992, I went for an audition as aresident entertainer with then the holiday groupcompany Holimarine UK. The auditions wereheld at Bridgwater Bay, Somerset.

I was greeted by the Regional EntertainmentsDirector, Mervyn Francis, who after discussingwhat I could offer the park, decided that I would

be better received at an over 50’s Holiday campdue to the brand of entertainment that I offered

which was sing along type Reginald Dixonmusic on the organ.

I eventually returned home to tell my parents thatI was to be posted off to a seaside town named

“Mundesley” which I had never heard of.Several days later I received my rehearsalsschedule and my arrival date on the camp.

My father drove me from my home town inLoughborough to Mundesley but on turningright off the Paston Road, I asked my dad tostop the car and as we came to a halt on thisdusty old road freezing cold in early MarchI wondered what I had let myself in for....I had second thoughts.

Never the less we continued along the road andmy father bid me farewell....much to his delightI’m sure and I was shown my accommodation by the housekeeper.

Several hours later having settled in, I receiveda knock on my door, a middle aged gentlemanentered my chalet and introduced himself to me he was my entertainments manager for the season.

We decided to go for a drink in this quiet townand ended up getting totally bladdered at the puband ended up arm in arm walking back to thecamp singing ‘Good Night Campers’ .

The rest of the team arrived the next day andrehearsals began for two weeks in freezingconditions as the heating was switched off.

Just as the season started we were introduced tothe General Manager, a giant of a man, namedJohn J Carr...I had a fabulous working relationshipwith this guy who I understood very well.

The season began in earnest and the shows....although a little tacky, due to stage fright,

did become better and well timed. My parents frequently visited me although they did stay off the camp at The Royal Hotel. We starred in all our shows which were 7 daysa week. The team consisted of two dance girls,a sports organiser, an organist and drummer forsequence dancing, show work and as assistantto the manager. As the season progressed I fell

Following directions from Jill, each child madea cake mix decorated with fruit and then the mixes

were whisked away for baking in the ovens ofthe Aylsham Co-op, who also supplied all theingredients for free.

In less than 30 mins the cakes were baked, thechildren screeched with joy at their accomplish-ment and Den & Sal were very proud of them.

On Saturday 3rd October and in the marqueecookery demonstrations were held featuringDerrol Waller, a ‘proper Norfolk chef’, and by Mark Sayers, Head Chef at the Saracen’sHead, Wolterton, where Den and Sal canconrm that the food is delicious. There were also demonstrations from DanielSmith, Chef Patron at the Ingham Swan andfrom Vanessa Scott and Mary Kemp, co-authors of ‘Everything Stops For Tea’, a Norfolk cook book.

There was further cookery from Charlie Hodson, Executive Chef at the Great Hospital in Norwich.

Entertainment in the Town Hall came fromGordon Blur, ‘The Juggling Chef’  and musicfrom ‘One Foot In The Groove’ .

There was face-painting for children and winetasting for adults (not for Den & Sal, however, neither of whom drink very much, which isamazing considering both of them worked

for years in Public Houses!).All in all this was a very proper food festival, with proper food cooked by proper chefs andnext year we will get there earlier and eatmore of the food (well, at our age youcan’t give up everything!).

Aylsham Food

FestivalAn extraordinarily warm October morning onFriday 2nd, found Liz, Sal and Dennis, alongwith Beryl, at the 10th Aylsham Food Festival.

Parking was difcult but all found suitable spots before we entered the Town Hall to a small displayof goods fresh and delicious, along with manyfresh jams, marmalades and chutneys.

We chatted for some time to Linda Cletheroe, of Linda’s Veg, who explained that everything wasgrown on her plot at home in Edgeeld and inthe best spirit of the Festival explained that she was absolutely devoted to fresh, local produce.

From there, the intrepid trio walked to AylshamParish Church to watch schoolchildren beingtaught how to bake cakes.

The smartly dressed children were excited at the prospect of actually baking something and led by Jill Willis, whose husband Roger is the ring-master of all events, and her volunteers theywere, in short order, dressed in protectiveclothing and standing over bowls of mix.

From Julien NelsonI am running the Great Ethiopian Run inAfrica for Vision Aid Overseas on the22nd November 2015, as it is the 30thAnniversary that Vision Aid has beengoing and it is a major fundraiser foron going projects.

Vision Aid Overseas is a registered charitywhose overseas volunteers are qualifedmembers of the optical profession in theUK whether they are Optometrists orDispensing Opticians or Technicians.

I have been a member for 25 of the 30 yearsand my rst overseas trip was to Sierra Leonein 1992 this was before the civil war that

was to cause so much devastation, this tripwas to set up a clinic in a suburb called Bonear the gold mining area on the bordersnear Liberia, part of this trip was to set upa workshop so for the rst time they hadthe ability to cut a lens to t a frame.

The equipment we took from England had been donated to the charity by my father, this was the rst workshop Vision Aid setup in Africa there were many challengesdue to very poor electricity and watersupplies, but this equipment was perfectas it only required a bucket of waterrather than running water.

The charity has always collected donatedspectacles and continues to do so, these areforwarded into a program called Specsortwhich cleans & grades the powers, broken spectacles are used for re-cycling as it is

better to not supply anything that is dam-aged in case of breakage so soon after beinggiven the gift of sight for the rst time.

always ensuring awarm welcomeeither in personor on the phone.

They will offer youan appointmenttime to suit yourrequirements.

Appointments range

from 9.00am - 4.25pm on weekdays.

8.00am - 12.30pm on Saturday.

We will soon be offer-ing an evening cliniconce a fortnight tostart with.

Cromer EyeCare has always kept up withthe latest equipment and has been offeringRetinal Photography for many years now.

We have a full and varied frame stock with prices ranging from £15.00 upwards, andare able to access any particular lens thatyour prescription may require.

We also stock many accessories and arange of sports spectacles to complimentyour hobby.

Cromer EyeCare has an on-site workshopmanaged by Julien whereby 90% of the spectacles are made on the premises this enables a very fast service on stock single vision lenses with many produced on thesame day.

For more complex spectacles it is usuallywithin a week to 10 days.

CROMER EYECARE are about to become part of a loyalty customer program wherebyyou pay a monthly fee by Direct Debitfrom £10.00.

For this you can be seen by our Optometristas and when you feel the need, and for your

commitment, you will get up to 30% off allspectacles that you buy regardless of howmany pairs you purchase, thereforeenabling you to express yourselfa bit more!!

Your monthly fee also includes spectacleinsurance with limited excess to pay.

Please call in and enquire about thisexciting new venture which we hopewill prove very popular and rewarding.

From very humble beginnings of mass clinics in very remote areas the charityhas formulated a very thorough teaching

program wereby many students are taught the basics of conducting an eye-examin-ation so when the volunteers are not therework can continue, another set of studentsare taught how to make the spectacles so

people can have exact spectacles ratherthan nearest match from donation.

The donated specs are still a very big partof the charities work as the outreach clinics in areas that have little or no money they arestill required, a small cost of about 0.20p

is levied as it has been proven that if they pay for something they look after it, if itis free they expect more.

Vision Aid Overseas has now set up fullyfunded courses and workshops in 5 Africancountries now, I have been to Sierra Leone3x, Ethiopia 2x, Ghana, Burkina Faso andIndia each and every one has many differentand wonderful memories ranging from:

Twins aged 50 seeing each other forthe rst time.

A mum being able to see her baby.

Farmers being able to go back to work asthey can see therefore being able to feed thefamily and let the children attend school.

Seeing a tree for the rst time. The list is never ending.

I am approaching 50 early next year and thechallenge to run a race in the third highestcapital of the world and the highest in Africaand support a cause which has helped shapemy working career and brought joy that youwouldn’t think a pair of spectacles could

bring to a person by the simple gift ofsight something which many of us takefor granted and don’t act upon until itis to late, prevention is better thancure for many eye conditions.

Increase Of InheritanceTax Allowance to £1 millionwhere home inherited by descendants.

Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

“A family home is likely to remain the primaryasset for many middle-income taxpayers.

Fortunately there are new provisions in the Finance Bill 2015 that provide signicant

potential benets to tax-payers leavingtheir home to descendants.”

So says the Government’s preamble to the FinanceBill 2015. It must, of course, be passed byParliament in order to become law.

The small print is far from straight-forwardand this is not the universal panacea that itmight rst seem.

The Finance Bill 2015 inserts a new sectioninto the Inheritance Act 1984. It will providean extra Nil Rate Band if the home passesto descendants. It will apply only to deathsafter 6th April 2017.

The effect should eventually be to increase the Nil Rate Band for a home-owning marriedcouple (or civil partners) to £1,000,000.

The relief will start to take effect in April 2017.It will be phased in, starting with an additional£100,000 in 2017, £125,000 in 2018, £150,000in 2019 and then the nal £175,000 in 2020.

The ordinary Nil Rate Band of £325,000will remain frozen until April 2021.

The home must pass to a direct descendant of the deceased, which includes step-children but not unmarried partners who lived at the property with the deceased.

Any unused band will be transferable to a spouseor civil partner. There is tapered withdrawal ofthe new band for estates valued at more than£2,000,000.

To avoid those who sell their homes, todownsize or to move into care or to live withrelatives, being treated unfairly, it is proposedthat legislation will be included in the 2016Finance Bill to extend this relief where thedeceased downsized or ceased to own aresidence on or after 8th July 2015.

The provisions do not come into effect until6th April 2017 and so it remains necessaryto consider other options for effectivesuccession tax-planning for the familyhome in the interim.

The Teacher ....

...asked her class to write down on a piece of paper the type of work their Dads did.

The children, very excitedly, scribbled theiranswers. One by one, the teacher asked eachchild to stand and describe the job.

There was much laughter & screaming, apart from little Tommy.

“Tommy why do you look so sad?”asked the teacher.

Tommy rose slowly to his feet and replied:

“My Dad’s a stripper in a Gay Bar”

The other children remained silent as Tommycontinued: “Sometimes he doesn’t come homeand my Mum sits crying. Sometimes he sellshis body for other men’s pleasure”.

There were gasps around the classroom.

The teacher acted quickly and dismissed thechildren, telling them to go out and play.

She then walked up to little Tommy, put herarm around his shoulder and asked:

“Is all that true Tommy?”

“No not at all Miss. He really plays Rugby for England, but I was too embarrassed to say”.
