Dear Editor,As you will appreciate, due to the awful weatheron Sat. 25th July and the predicted conditions onLifeboat day itself, we had to postpone the event. We have decided to hold the event on Sunday 9th August and the day will be almost the samewith stalls, live demos etc. BUT unfortunately the Sheringham Shantymen, have a prior engagement. To make a change we will be having Rig-a-Jig-Jig performing inside the boathouse rather thanon the Pier forecourt. They will be giving demonstrations of Norfolk Step Dancing and are very ably led by Fiona Davies, who is the sister of our Coxswain, John Davies.RegardsAudrey Smith

Dear Liz,We were so happy to be amongst such a lovelygroup of people at the Pilgrim Shelter in Trimingham on Saturday 18th July!On arrival, we were warmly greeted by your goodself. You helped us to park safely, got us a lovelyseat & table and made sure that we had a drink. We settled in nicely and awaited the impending BBQ and entertainment provided by comedian Pat Nearney and friends.Lots of people arrived on this fine evening to further the cause of building a new village hall. The atmosphere was wonderful and all thosewho attended were very well fed with BBQ meats, various salads and delicious desserts. The entertainment was top rate with a variety of comedy, poetry and song! There was also an excellent raffle.

Dear Liz, Im so sorry if No. 1 saw the letter I wrote to the Crab Tales as malicious. No way did I intend it to be read / taken that way, it was supposed to be light hearted - thatis why I said the creature had good taste. Apologies to No.1, and yes I am a dedicated No.1 chip buyer winter and summer.Annie

After three hours, we left at about 10pm. very satisfied with the evening we had and the fact that in excess of 200 had been raised for this very worthy cause!Kind regards,Sue and Tony BoytonNorth Walsham

On the letters page of the previousedition of the Crab Tales a small fat animal was photographed coming out of a rubbish bin. I am not sure what the animal wasbut the remark in the letter from Annie (see letter below) was not intended to offend and with all of us at Crab Tales we apologise unreservedly if offence was taken. Annies remark bears no relation to the outstanding quality of fish & chips served at No 1 Cromer where I am and intend to remain a regular customer. This edition informs our readersof all the Summer events that aretaking place in Cromer and all the surrounding area for you to enjoy and help to raise funds for various charitys throughout the county and beyond. Please support all you can, have fun and if you have time send me a short report and photographs, for as many as possible to be in the next issue.

At the Pilgrim Shelter we had a very successful evening here inTrimingham andI was privileged to receive the congratulatory letter below. I really was just part of a very hard-working team and I passed on the thanks to all, for without the many hands these events cannot happen. We are having a picnic on Sunday, check out the ad. on page 26 andkeep your fingers crossed that theweather is good for August although we are organising marquee!Fingers crossed also for the Cromer Carnival and hoping that all of you have a really jolly time.

    Enjoy Your Crab Tales

Dear Editor, Jacobs, the engineering consultancy carrying outthe Bacton Rejuvenation Project at Bacton Gas Terminal, have donated almost 500 worth of Soft Play Equipment for the use of younger members of About With Friends.

The money was raised through a football score prediction game organised by Malcolm Lown and Mike Donovan. Workers on the BRP pay a weekly fee in a game known as The Footie Thing and at the end of the season the money is given to a charity chosen by the organisers. Jacobs have worked with About With Friends in the past and this year wanted to buy somethingspecific for the younger members who attend school holiday schemes and the Friday night Youth Club. The charity needed some Soft Play Equipment and this was duly provided by Jacobs. The equipment is a selection of high-quality, ultra-safe building blocks in various shapes which the youngsters (whoall have a learning disability) can use to create a world of their own.

Dear Liz,I would like to refer to the recent Overstrand Yard Sale which I believe is an annual event. In the absence of knowing the objectives of thissale I must presume that the proceeds - or at leasta proportion of them - are destined for good causes unlike a boot sale which is purely for personal gain. (No issue with that, have done many of them)However the Boot sales are usually contained within a specific designated area and some formof marshalling or control is in evidence. Overstrands Boot sales, for example is a case in point and causes little or no problem to throughtraffic being contained, as it is, within the confines of the cricket ground. With respect to the Yard Sale however it wouldseem that all normal consideration towards throughtraffic is totally ignored with parked cars on bothsides of the road from Overstrand Hall to close to the Sidestrand boundary. There was no evidence of any Police control - assuming that they had been informed by theorganisers - at the very least some official Policeno parking cones down one side of the road thus ensuring that there was sufficient width of road for traffic to pass safely, particularly in view of the number of both commercial and agricultural vehicles that use this road. Inevitably there was an unfortunate road traffic accident, involving three cars, I am informed, undoubtedly due to moving traffic trying to negotiate a single lane situation through the length of Overstrand.

Dear Editor,May I through your publications letters page, thank the following for thier help & comfort to me when my husband fell near Mundesley Lifeboat Station on July 10th.H.M. Coastguards, Norfolk Air Ambulance, Members of MundesleyLifeboats especially 2 junior crew and Mundesley residents for their help.Unfortunately my husband died from his injuries on July 12th.We have spent many holidays in Mundesley and enjoy reading the Crab Tales.Yours, Christine WoodDewsbury.

Malcolm and Mike dropped by the About With Friends Base recently to hand over the equipment which was quickly pounced upon by members at a summer holiday activity. About With Friends are also grateful for the donations of companies and individuals who help them acquire the specialist and often expensive equipment they need to build their services.About With Friends is a fun, active & energetic charity based in Cromer. We offer children, youngpeople and adults with learning disabilities the chance to lead the lives they choose. When they become part of our family they haveopportunities to develop lasting friendships; engagein fun and active social activities; get involved in the community; have the chance to try new experiences; learn new skills both for life and work; but above all feel a valued part of society while enjoying life to the full. For further information about any of our servicesincluding Ignite, the alternate Fridays youth club for 9-12 year olds, call 01263 515 230. Yours SincerelySteve Smith

As I said at the beginning I applaud the motivationfor this event if, indeed, it is in part for charitablereasons but if it is going to attract this number ofpeople I submit that it has to be better organised.I only hope the much publicised Overstrand Feteon August 1st does not cause similar problems.Great publication keep up the good work!Kind regards Michael Webb Sidestrand

Weve All Heard Of .. .....recycling gifts but greeting cards? Not so much. But for brothers Jeff and Ron Methier, openly re-gifting a vintage birthday card has become something of a running tradition. Sunny Methier posted a photo of the 42-year-old greeting card that her father, Jeff, 58, first gave to her uncle Ron in 1973.

It was from my father to my uncle! And theyjust continued to use it simply because it said recycle to a friend. Sunny said. The card features both mens signatures for each year theyve passed the card back and forth along with a note for the year.

Sunny later posted the photo above of the frontof the card, featuring a Peanuts character stating:This is the age of ecology! Looks like the brothers took the message to heart.

On Saturday July 18th, I went over to NorthreppsInternational Airport, along with hundreds of other plane spotters, to watch aircraft taking off and landing as well as doing numerous loops and dives over the strip.Northrepps International has been run by the Gurney family since WW2, on a couple of locations. This particular airfield was opened in the late 1990s.After walking around to look at the various planes, including a late 1940s twin enginedDorner 28 I was invited to take a 10 minuteflight in wonderful Tiger Moth.

The last time I took a flight in one of these was when my late father was a part owner of a TigerMoth with two other members of the South Canterbury gliding club. Together they spent 400in buying it (late 1950s) and some 5 yrs later hadto reglue the wings at a cost of 700. They sold it. Such is life as THEY say? After chatting to many people the overall opinionwas that it was all very successful, particularly in the case of Jamie Edgehill representing the Air Ambulance. He said: Ive been working for the Air Ambulance for over 11 years and this has been the most successful day so far On behalf of everyone else who enjoyed the day, Thank you very much Chris Gurney. I leave the last word to Chris who said:Well,I dont know where to start other than tosay a very big thank you to all who flew in on the day, the club members who flew dozens ofpeople from our local Parishes and to the hundreds who turned up to just to watch.... The Air Ambulance were most grateful for all the donations and a I am staggered at the the generosity of our neighbours....

I was too busy to take photos and our internet crashed due to the high numbers present....Just a shame that a resident from Southrepps has lodged a formal complaint as it seems its illegal to fly over said village. I believe we flew several from there. The brilliant cake, donated by Little Gems Cakes and Cupcakes went towards raising funds for the Air Ambulance.

celebrating the Eucharist, when prayers of thankswere given for Mary Sumner and all those who had carried forward her vision especially in this Diocese, and on this North Norfolk coast for Mrs Harvey of The Rectory who was our first Branch Leader. After Marguerites talk there was a break while members looked at the documents on display, and afternoon tea was served. Chairs were set around several tables upon which were small posies of flowers, and on a table in the corner there was a large celebration cake, which was cut later by past Diocesan President, The Revd Canon Pamela Fawcett, together with our current MU President. While photographs were taken, members enjoyeda delicious tea, chatting together over a slice of very tasty iced fruit cake. Many thanks to Branch Leader Mrs Barbara Hicks for planning such a special afternoon, to all who helped with flower arranging and cake making or bringing food. And thanks too to everyone who came to celebrate with us. A truly memorable afternoon.

105 Years Of Mundesley Mothers UnionOn a lovely afternoon in July, over 30 ladies (& gentlemen) gathered in the Church Roomsat Mundesley to celebrate 2015 as the year our Branch had its 105th anniversary. Our speaker, Marguerite Phillips, gave us a livelyand stimulating pictorial presentation on her roleas Norwich Diocesan President. Ladies had come from our Deanery and beyondto celebrate with us: North Walsham, Cromer, Sheringham, South Repps, Trunch, Gimingham & West Runton. Mothers Union church banners made a colourfuldisplay, alonside an interesting mini-exhibition of memorabilia, some ladies had brought their membership certificates & cards etc.Proof of our beginnings came from a copy of apage of the 1910 MU Diocesan Annual Report, together with some very interesting quotes fromearly 20th century Annual Reports giving decisionstaken at Council meetings from long ago, all of which made fascinating reading. The afternoon started with Revd Pat Baggaley

ParrotsIn 1868 the Annals and Magazine of Natural History reported on a visit to Northrepps Hall, the residence of the Dowager Lady Buxton. While partaking of the hospitality of the accomplished hostess, the guests were delighted and astonished by the parrots that darted in and out among the trees or flew over their heads across the lawn, their brilliant plumage gleaming in the radiance of the setting sun. However the visitors were sorry to learn that these birds, which at one time amounted to nearly fifty, have been reduced now to some twenty-four, owing to the vicious propensity of gamekeepers and so-called sportsmen to wantonly destroy every stranger that may come across them.River MunThe source of the River Mun can be found in Northrepps from where it runs to the North Sea at Mundesley.SmugglersThe village once had a gang of smugglers, whose leader was a member of the Summersby family and was given the nickname Old Summers.

A local woman called Sally Bean lived in a cottage with views across the countryside and she warned the smugglers when the prevention men were about.

Origins of the name of the villageIt has been suggested that the name Northrepps is derived from the Old English word repel meaning strips of land in a fen that can be tilled.

Literary ConnectionsThe author Verily Anderson (1916-2010) lived in the village for many years. She is probably best known for her Brownies childrens stories. Joyce Grenfell, a close friend of Verily and her family was a frequent visitor to her house. The records of Hickling Priory from1516 record the performance of plays during the week of the Lords birthday by the men of Northrepps.

Ritchie Perry... .....is the author of The Fall Guy that Ive just finished reading on kindle. I asked him to tell us about his work and this was his response. All told Ive had about 40 books published - I cant be exact as I dont have copies of all of them. 18 of them were thrillers, 16 under my own name and two using a psuedonym.Thirteen featured the same central character, a slightly seedy and not wholly admirable secret agent. Apart from appearing in hardback in this country, my thrillers were published in both hardand paperback in the USA. Various titles weretranslated into French, German & Italian besidesgracing library shelves in other English speaking countries such as Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Although my writing never won any awards, noteven at school, I was elected an honorary memberof the Mark Twain Society in Missouri for my services to American literature. The manuscripts for my thrillers form the RitchiePerry Collection which is stored in the Mugar Memorial Library at Boston University, Mass. Most of the other books I wrote were aimed at children between 7 and 11. Saturday 18th July At Trimingham Pilgrim ShelterWe have not been blessed with good weather when we have tried to organise Car Boot Sales (but are trying again on 22nd Aug) maybe wehave been aiming for the wrong part of the dayfor the evening of Saturday 18th was super warm sunshine and no breeze to speak of the gazebos did not lift at all!Over forty five supporters arrived at the PilgrimShelter to enjoy BBQ meats from our super localbutcher Tavern Tasty of Swafield, and mixed salads provided by members of the team and superb desserts concocted with her usual excellent skill by Linda Brown. The entertainment was provided by Pat Nearneywho is really quirky and entertaining in a truly Norfolk style (see him at Davenports of NorthWalsham Sun 20th Sept. tickets 7.50 raising funds for WEVA) his partner Sheilah Olley, pictured below, and local budding stand up comedian Dylan Wilson.Dylan recently excellently compered fundraiser for Cromer Lifeboat at Cromer Academy and at just 13 yrs has a great career in front of him.

The very professional Triminghamite Bill Rowlands on guitar was enticing us all to join in the choruses of his great repertoire. The evening raised a staggering 320 for our fund towards a new village hall, thank you all who came and supported the evening of food and laughter, special thanks to Terry Brown who was the main BBQ chef and Dot Bradley who sells the the raffle tickets and generally keeps it all together.I hope to see lots of Crab Tales readers at our forthcoming events.

have lived in since 1987. A book and a play were written specifically for schools, targeting teenagers with very low reading ages. I also wrote a geography book about Brazil.

Twenty odd years ago ill-health forced me to stopwriting. In fact, Id almost stopped thinking of myself as an author until in May this year I was unexpectedly contacted by Endeavour Press, thelargest independent digital publishing company in the UK. Since then things have moved veryswiftly. My first book, The Fall Guy, has nowbeen published as an ebook on Kindle and is available on Amazon or the Endeavour Press website at 2.99. When The Fall Guy was first published, back in the dark mists of time, The Times review referred to me as the best newcomer to the thriller scene for many a year. Despite an element of exaggeration, it made for a gratifying start to my writing career. Lets hope the ebook is as popular. A 2nd e-book, The Bishops Pawn, published last month, features the same central character & is available now. Newgate Callendar in the New York Times Book Review said A lot of fun as the Perry books, so tongue in cheek and insouciant, always are....Philis is the latter day James Bond.Richie Perry will be giving a talk at the Pilgrim Centre in Trimingham at 2pm on Friday August 28thDetails in our next edition.

A Young Ventriloquist.. ......is touring and, one night, hes doing a show in a small fishing town. With his dummy on his knee, he starts going through his usual dumb blonde jokes.Suddenly, a blonde woman in the fourth row stands on her chair and starts shouting:Ive heard enough of your stupid blonde jokes. What makes you think you can stereotype blondewomen that way? What does the colour of a womans hair have to do with her worth as a human being? Its men like you who keep women like me frombeing respected at work and in the community, and from reaching our full potential as people. Its people like you that make others think that all blondes are dumb! You & your kind continueto perpetuate discrimination against, not only blondes, but women in general... pathetically, all in the name of humour! The embarrassed ventriloquist begins to apologise, but the blonde yells:

You stay out of this! Im talking to that little sh*t on your knee!

Thanks to Jackie Edwards for this

We All Bleed Red Poet & artist Vince Laws has created We All Bleed Red for the church of St Peter & St Paul, in Oulton, Norfolk. The church tower is in need of significant repair, the heating is inadequate and wooden platforms need replacing. A new floor of pamment tiles in the nave will create a level space, and allow a variety of community uses, such as art shows, concerts, and yoga. I want to show the tower bleeding, in need of first aid, and wounded, explained Vince. And at the same time, as the church takes on the new mantle of being a community space, I want We All Bleed Red to be an invitation to everyone to use the space, regardless of religion, ethnicity, sexuality, etc.Stephen Jefford, who is co-ordinating the restoration project with the Heritage Lottery Fund for St Peter & St Paul, Oulton, said: Were really thrilled that Vince has come up with such a dramatic idea. I have known for a while that he, like many in the village, cherishesthe church as an open building. His idea of making the Tower a part of his exhibition is really thoughtful. Were also really grateful for the support weve had from the Church and Diocese, as well as our regular parishioners, to embrace making the church building both a place of worship as well as a community resource.Vince will be exhibiting an array of text art andpoetry inside the church from Sunday 23rd toSunday 30th August, All are welcome. The church is open daily and entry is free. Parking is on grass 20 metres from the church, the main path is gravel, with a ramp into the church. Other paths around the church are grassy and uneven. There is no toilet.

Donations for the Oulton Tower & Community Project are welcome. For details of how to donateplease contact: [email protected] The restoration project to date has been supportedby a first round Grants for Places of Worship award from the Heritage Lottery fund, to developthe proposals further as well as an award from the Norfolk Historic Churches Trust; the churchis awaiting confirmation of further funding fromthe HLF towards the costs of carrying out the works and would be grateful for any financial help toward this project.Photograph above shows an artists impression of We All Bleed Red by Vince Laws.Contact Vince Laws via:[email protected]

Crayford & Abbs To The RescueA Norfolk dealership helped care home pensionersget to Buckingham Palace for tea by lending them a Nissan Qashqai for the day.Crayford & Abbs Nissan in Gypsies Lane, Holt, came to the rescue after hearing how residents at Halsey House in Cromer had been invited to London but required transport. The generous dealership sent the Royal British Legion-run home the award-winning Qashqai to drive down to the Queens residence so they wouldnt miss out on the special occasion.

Kevin Abbs, Director at Crayford & Abbs, said: We love to do our bit in the local community so we were only too happy to help out. The residents had the time of their lives and said it was a wonderful experience to visit the palace. They also enjoyed travelling in comfort and style in the Qashqai.Halsey House in Norwich Road is exclusive to ex-service people and their dependants and can accommodate up to 89 residents, which includes a 16-bed dementia care wing.To book a test drive with Crayford and Abbs Nissan, call 01263 588 160 or go to the Gypsies Lane showroom.

Farewell To... ....Mundesley Medical CentreThree years ago I was fresh out of college and working two part time jobs, with no idea where I wanted my career to take me. In the summer of 2012 I was accepted for anApprentice General Assistant vacancy at Mundesley Medical Centre, which has truly proven to be an opportunity like no other. In those years I developed many skills and know-ledge as well as developing slight hypochondriac tendencies and meeting some very interesting characters and changing my hair colour a grand total of five times (not related to stress).

There is a common misconception that all GP administrative staff do is answer phones and act as gatekeepers to appointments; I quickly learned that this was not the case. In the first few months I was an unsure teenager, watching the dispensers & receptionists solving important problems, listening to the peculiar patient queries and seeing the frustration at the unanswered hospital answerphone messages. I was dreaming of the day I might get to do morethan counting medication into boxes & folding letters. After a few months I was not only thrownin at the deep end but sent with an anchor! Without the aid of an incredibly supportive, willing and sympathetic team of colleagues I am certain I would not have coped with the pressure. Sometimes you do need to rant and other times cry, but no matter what happened I knew I would be supported. I have also had the pleasure of meeting many wonderful patients, ones with stories that stick with you, others whose presence can brighten your day and theres even the odd telephone number you recognise which is enough to bring a smile to your face. We all have our favourites (even if we dont admitit) for different reasons but its satisfying to knowthat the good memories will stay with you. I am fortunate enough to have worked with thePatient Reference Group; they are a team of astuteindividuals from diverse backgrounds with refreshing views. Their views have affected a wide range of matters from the way clinics are run to the colour of font on the television screen.

The meetings with them are always enjoyably enlightening and their support to the surgery is greatly unrecognised but profoundly appreciated.

The reason I volunteered to write this article is because after my three insightful, challenging and at times exasperating, years I will be leaving the practice. I wanted to acknowledge the vast opportunities Mundesley Medical Centre have provided for me and equally the experience gained from the patients I have had the pleasure of meeting. I am sure there will be more General Assistants who will attain valuable knowledge from workingat the surgery and I would hope that they will cherish their time spent there as I have. Lynda Wilson Mundesley Medical Centre

From Editor:Thank you for this article Lynda, and very best wishes from all at the Crab Tales for a very successful and interesting future.

Unwanted Textiles People in North Norfolk are being encouraged to recycle their unwanted textiles, rather than letting them go to landfill.Cookstown Textile Recyclers will now provide & maintain bring banks and collect textiles fromapprox. 75 sites across Norfolk. To find your nearest textile recycling point, visit:http://www.recyclenow.com/recycling-locator which includes a postcode search function which can list all local recycling facilities. The collected textiles will be taken to their depot in Hertfordshire to be bulked up and transported to the sorting facility in Ireland. The new lime green banks will take all clothing, shoes, bed linen, towels, curtains, belts, handbags, hats & scarves. As well as this new service, we would also encourage residents to continue to donate high quality clothing to local charity shops who rely on donations to carry out their vital work.If you know of a suitable location for a textile bank, please contact North Norfolk District Council on: 01263 516 195.

In June...... ......Yael Biran fell and broke her elbow, so she headed to her local NHS hospital. But the mother-of-two, from S.E.London, was so disappointed with aspects of the care she received that she wrote to Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trusts patient advice and liaison service. The Independent......shared this:She wrote:Dear Lewisham PALs,Id like to complain about a visit I had to your A&E department on the 15th of June 2015. Sorry in advance for my language, but this really upset me.

On Monday the 15th of June I fell & knew I broke something (turns out I broke my elbow) So I went to Lewisham A&E.I came armed with a book to help me pass the waiting time! Actually enjoying the fact that I am going to get to read a book for a chance! But no the bloody nurse sees me in 6 minutes! 6 ruddy minutes! all I had time for was to send a text, settle down, get my glasses out and find the right page, and they bloody call me in!She then sends me to have an X-ray and says I need to sit in the x-ray waiting room.

Yay, I think, a waiting room - I will get to read my book! And so I dont even bother to put any-thing back in the bag & happily skipto the x-ray waiting area, book in hand and glasses on top of head. I sit down and get seen within 37 seconds. the B^^&@s!*All done and dusted and 5 minutes later I skip to the next waiting area to wait for the next nurse to see me.By that point I think I owe myself achocolate from the vending machinebut waste 5 minutes trying to make it work (it didnt - at least there is one thing you can count on in this A&E!) I then sit down comfortably, happy in the notion that surely, now......I will get at least a couple of chapters....... but no!2 minutes later I get to see the nextnurse who is an absolute gem and issuper nice, she explains everything, gives me a sling & a tetanus shot and sends me on my way home! home! bloody rubbish!

I left home and came back in less than 2 hours! Seriously! something must be done about this! what is amum to do in order to get a few hours of quiet reading in this country???!!!

Sincerely Yours, A frustrated mother of 2 little boys who dont give her a seconds rest.

    (P.S. You rock! )

Sheringham & Cromer Lions ClubThis year, Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club willcelebrate 5 years since they were formed, and they have gone from strength to strength.About the Lions Club : The Lions Clubs arepart of the Lions Club International, based in theUSA, started by Melvin Jones, in Chicago in 1917, where he and other businessmen joined together, under his leadership, for the purpose of helping improve the conditions in the communities where they lived.Since then the Lions Clubs have spread throughoutthe world, raising funds to help with the needy in their own area. The Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club was part of Taverham Lions Club, but in 2013, we were converted to a Chartered Lions Club.To do this we had to increase our membership to 21, and by doing so, we had become one of the fastest growing Lions Clubs in the UK.What do Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club do?On the 2nd Tuesday of the month at the MorleyClub in Sheringham for our business meetings and on the 4th Tuesday, we have a social event, to which the public are invited. Visiting speakersto tell us about a group or charity we may be considering helping, or are guestsspeaker. One evening Wing Commander Ken Wallis, in his late nineties, told us about his life as a bomber pilot during and after WW2. Our main purpose though is to raise funds for local charities & good causes, and since we formed we have raised over 6570.00.Every Christmas, we have been able to distributeChristmas hampers to 55 needy families and wealso supply, free of charge, a Message in a bottle If you suffer from a constant illness, or need regular medication, you can request a Message in a bottle from a member of the Lions Club, or from your local GP.The bottle has a printed form inside, where youlist your medical conditions & what medication you take and it also contains 2 green stickers. One sticker for the outside of where the bottle is stored and the other on your front door. An
