Wow - it is Wimbledon time and the weather is glorious, locals and holidaymakers alike are looking at advertisements for ideas of where to spend their leisure time.I love the adverts and have always enjoyed them more than the banal programmes they interrupt.I am amazed how many adverts thatyou see in the press are often artisticwithout letting their potential clients know where they are, how much they charge, and how to book. The pier show boards are now all over the area, it took me 4 or 5 viewings to finally realise that it states: The famous not just a yellow smudge and is the grey intentional?!I found this out when I saw that the back of one board was bright clean & white, I had thought that last yearsfaded boards were being reused. Plus NO phone number we are 60%over 60 yrs on this coast and as somany of our visitors are the same age, I think most of them would agree. We like a phone number.

Preferably a landline number.I have heard great things of the Pier Show and hope this oversight and /or artistic flair will not stop people booking and enjoying a great show, see Cindys report on page 19 with Philips photos.

Dear Editor,We would like to thank everyone who donated money during our recent collection days at TescoAylsham and Morrisons Cromer, and to those who came along to support our stalls during the Open Boat House event and Crab and Lobster Festival. We thought your Crab Tales readers would like to know that these amounts were raised: Tesco - 337.30, Morrisons - 474.64, Open Boat House stall - 247.30 and the Crab and Lobster Festival tombola stall - 568.62. As always, we are most grateful to both our members and the general public for their constant support in helping us to raise thousands of pounds for the RNLI.

Dear Editor,Sunday lunch time I called into Lidls at North Walsham. A young man was sorting through the bread section and at his side stood a large trolley piled up with loaves of bread - just thrown in higgledy piggeldy. I said whats this, are they out of date? - his answer - Yes, theyre all going in the bin.I said it was disgraceful when we know there are people who are short of food - he said I know and continued adding to the pile.We are constantly being asked to contribute to food banks and lots of people do, some who can ill afford to, and yet we have large food stores throwing the stuff away.

Dear Liz,As you probably know Mundesleys long serving Postman Bob Hutchinson is due to retire next month. We would like to give Bob this message:

We would like to wish you a very long and happy retirement and thank you for all your hard work and friendliness over the years.

Good luck for the future to you and your family.

    Thank you very much.Carol Howard.

What sort of people are we?We live in a deprived area, how I wish Id had the nerve to take the trolley out of the shop andlook for people who needed bread, but that would have made me a criminal, which is exactly the name I would give to the lawwhich allows these stores to throw food away.Janet MunroMundesley-On-Sea

Dear Crab Tales,Can I remind those interested in time travel, that everyone is welcome to the gathering on Gold Park, Mundesley, at 7.30 last Tuesday.Nigel Holmes

Dear Editor,During the first three months of this year the Fairtrade group Traidcraft had a special appeal for donations, as the UK Government would match the amount raised? An amazing 615,000 was raised - including justover 1,000 from North Norfolk - and this will be doubled by the UK Aid Match scheme! So, for example, Traidcraft will work with moresmallholder tea growers in NW Bangladesh, which has huge needs. Josni, was unable to feed and clothe her family, but now has improved her income over seven

Dear Liz,I just want to say a big thank you for promoting our Open Gardens event. We had a very successful day and raised over 1,600 for St Michaels Church and The Norfolk Hospice. We really appreciate your help. Best wishes,Alastair & Julie Brown Plumstead, near Holt

Dear Editor, Further to Nigel Holmes note on the (lack of)wildflowers in the cliff top bedding Mundesley.

Whilst we have to look at scraggly formal bedding interspersed with a lot of soil, I thought your readers might like to see the wildflower bedding delights (above) that Cromer residents enjoy and also ......

times, and has the skills, tools and confidence to keep moving forward. This scheme has provided a great boost to Traid-crafts work with smallholders and producers across the world and your support for this work is making these improvements possible for thousands of families. Thank you, thank you North Norfolk, from Weybourne to Overstrand and all the places in between for your help and enthusiasm.Brenda Smith. Committee Member Fairtrade for Sheringham.

Dear Editor, While looking out to Sea at Overstrand and admiring the new sign post, we noticed that the sign for Cromer Pier is in fact pointing towards Sidestrand.

Anyone not familiar with the area would have a jolly long walk ahead to Cromer. The sign had not been twisted around, it was very firm in the ground.Regards S. Austin,CromerDear Editor,On Sunday 21st June, masses of people flocked to the official opening of Cromers new skatepark and a full schedule of activities. The star attraction was European freestyle scooter champion Brandon James, who with his colleague Connor, performed a number of impressive demonstrations. The competitions had 3 categories - scooter, skateboard & BMX. Entrants were limited to just 60 secs each to display their skills. Congratulations go to Bart, Ezra and Joe Foster respectively, each of whom received a lavish prize package, courtesy of Wet Dog surf shop.

North Walsham & Dilham Canal The third annual Canal-side information Eventtook place at Ebridge Mill pond on the 6th & 7th June by kind permission of the owners, The Old Canal Co. Ltd. The weather was very sunny and enjoyable and the tented areas of the chamber island were allfull of information & things of interest and 250signatures were added to our petition to continuethe restoration work. All the visitors were veryimpressed by the improvements made since most of the canal between Ebridge & Spa Common had been de-silted since 2011.

Most recollections were that there had been no further flooding reported in Nth Walsham since that time (the canal is the natural drain for NW and its environs) fish had returned & grown toa catchable size, carefully avoiding otters, which can occasionally be seen. Many kinds of water birds now visit on a regularbasis or are resident; kingfisher often seen flyingupstream through the lock; water voles are nowmuch more evident, mainly due to the prepared banks and the constant water level; frogspawn &emerging baby frogs are in great abundance. The swans nesting at Spa Common have hatched9 cygnets this year and the general canal-side vegetation & flowers contribute to this tranquil spot of beauty.

Maritime SayingsSon of a Gun.When in port, and with the crew restricted to the ship for any extended period of time, wives andladies of easy virtue often were allowed to visitor even live aboard along with the crew. Infrequently, but not uncommonly children wereborn aboard and a convenient place for this wasbetween the guns on the gun deck. If the childsfather was unknown, they were entered in the ships log as son of a gun.

Cut of His JibThe cut of a sail refers to its shape. Since this would vary between ships, it could be used bothto identify a familiar vessel at a distance, and tojudge the possible sailing qualities of an enemy.

Pipe DownPipe down means stop talking and be quiet. The pipe down was the last signal from the Bowsons pipe each day which meant lights out and be quiet.

Clean Bill of HealthThis widely used saying has its origins in the document issued to a ship showing that the port it sailed from suffered from no epidemic or infection at the time of departure.

Mundesley Independent Life-boat has taken delivery of eight advertising banners. Being independent means that it has to raise its own funds tokeep operational in rescue services on sea and land. The lifeboat crew are also fully trained for inland flood rescue services across the region wherethere are river or other flooding emergencies and were in action at Bacton & Walcott eighteen months ago during the sea surge. The service is independent of the RNLI although it shares the same status as their crews within the emergency services.

Lifeboat Takes Delivery Of Banners Local photographer, Paul Damen has producedbanners for the Mundesley Lifeboat Boat Day & Boxing Day Dip annual fundraising events and recently presented them to the lifeboat Friends group who organise fundraising for the service and also run the Lifeboat Charity Shop in Station Road, Mundesley. Running costs for the Mundesley Lifeboat Rescue Service amount to approximately 30,000 each year so it is important that they maintain their profile with the public for their events. This years annual Boat Day will be on Sunday 9th August, commencing at 10am, with a church service followed by a day of fun and frolics.See events page for details.

First RateImplies Excellence. From the sixteenth century until steam took over, British naval ships were rated as to the number of heavy cannon they carried. A ship of 100 or more guns was a First Rate line-of-battle ship. Second rates carried 90 to 98 guns; Third rates, 64 to 89 guns; Forth rate 50 to 60 guns. Frigates carrying 20 to 48 guns were fifth and sixth rated.

LeewayThe weather side of a ship is the side from whichthe wind is blowing. The Lee side is the side of the ship sheltered from the wind. A Lee shore is a shore that is downwind of a ship. If a ship does not have enough leeway it is in danger of being driven onto the shore.

Hog Roast For... ...The Agincourt Season

It was a warm afternoon in Erpingham rectory gardens, several large marquees took up half of the lawn with beautifully set tables with white cloths and chairs, flowers and pretty crockery. A long table had a selection of intriguing items for a charity auction and ladies dressed in their medieval costume were adding the finishing touches while a group of Medieval Minstrels were setting up ready to play. All was calm but a sense of anticipation hung in the air, then people arrived - Medieval archers, knights, monks & clerics. Ladies dressed as noblescomplete with a houppelande, peasants with just a kirtle and serving wenches were all there. The table plan detailed which Agincourt knight table everyone was on Sir Thomas Erpinghamhimself, the Duke of Bedford, the Earl of Warwick or even Lord Scroop! When the Hog Roast arrived, we were ready to go. The food was plentiful & scrumptious hog

roast, bap, potatoes, various salads served with commendable efficiency, then strawberries (justpicked) with cream, meringues and shortbread with Tea or coffee to follow. The charity auction had amazing contributions which included a stainglass window for the frontdoor, a beautiful bouquet of flowers, a hand carvedcandle stick, a beautiful wooden box, handmadewalking stick, water colour painting and a hand crafted cushion. There was plenty of beer (in crates no less!) and other alcohol to be bid for and the rector minus his headdress ran it with humour and efficiency on our newly purchased PA system. The afternoon was drawing to a close when theheavens opened and rain came pouring down. But it couldnt spoil things. We had all had a fantastic time and over 3,660 was raised towards the installation of a toilet and kitchenette at the church. For all our other events please see our web site: www.erpingham.org

The Bear That Wasntby Frank Tashlin

This was my favourite book as a child and I stilllove it. I have often given it as a present not onlyto children but to adults as well. Although it is long out of print, used copies are available on line.As the New York Herald Tribune writes: It is a fable for grownups that will be fun for children. The story goes:With the first signs of approaching winter, theBears thoughts naturally turn to a cozy cave & a long snooze till spring. But when he awakes a few months later, he is surprised to find himself in the middle of an industrial complex! To make matters even worse, every one he meetsinsists that hes not even a bear ..... just a silly man who needs a shave and wears a fur coat.Written by the beloved director of such classic screwball comedies as The Girl Cant Help It and Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?, this wryly humorous tale has long been an underground favorite with readers of all ages and attitudes. Poking fun at a fast-paced, high-tech society, it follows the Bears repeated attempts of finding out just where he belongs. On an assembly line? In a zoo? At the circus? No one seems to know for sure.Tashlins 46 delightfully original and whimsicalillustrations, as can be seen on the cover, add to the charm of this unique and entertaining fable.

Meanwhile, there was something for everyone on the music stage. 3-piece band Gentlemen delivered a couple of scorching sets. A classy appearance from local singer Charlie Hield, and the Cromer Gospel choir kept spirits high.

The Skate Park committee ran a tombola stalland towards the end of proceedings, a bespoke skateboard valued at over 250 was given awayas a raffle prize.

Proceeds from both will be a valuable contribution towards the ongoing costs of maintaining the new skate park.

Letter Continued on Page 12 The Cromer Skate Park committee thanks every-body who came, as it all helped to make the event the success it clearly was. Most of all, however, our thanks go to all those who risked grazed knees and bruised egos to tryout their scooters, skateboards and bikes. Its your skate park, and there wouldnt have been any point in doing it without you.If you are interested in participating on the Cromer Skate Park committee, please contact us via any of the following:www.cromerskatepark.co.ukFaceBook: Cromer Skate ParkTwitter: @CromerSkateparkor phone: 07775 830 907

Dear Editor,In reply to the person who still insists on pretending to be Janet Munro (Please put your own name in future). Can I remind you that the free bus pass you have been kindly given by the authorities is NOT for you to go on days out, swanking round the countryside enjoying the views. Or indeed nosing over the hedges into other peoples private gardens. It is there to move the aged population from A to B. Were you expecting a private limousine? A cattle truck could do the same job.Mr H Mouse.PS: The REAL Janet Munro has a recipe for herBaked Cheese Pudding on: www.MrHMouse.co.uk

Dear Editor,I always enjoy your Book Reviews, as I am constantly searching for new authors to try.I could hardly believe my eyes when I read the review of The Buddha In The Attic as Id onlyjust read The Concubines Children, by DeniseChong about her own Chinese family living on both sides of the Globe. It covered such a similar story about a history that I had never before known about. It was a fascinating read, I would recommend it to anyone who would like to know about more about these desperate people who moved to Canada to support their families. Yours Sincerely, An avid reader.

Who Are You Going To Call?Following some recent media coverage surrounding unusual calls to the ambulance service I would like to dispel some myths and offer some guidance to people considering dialling 999. My dog is vomiting blood, I need to go to hospital and I dont get paid until tomorrow, Ive gone out shopping & locked myself out of my house & My feet hurt after wearing too small shoes are all examples of 999 calls recorded by The East of England Ambulance Service. While, undoubtedly, these are amusing anecdotes, they do highlight the fact that some people clearlydo not understand the role the 999 ambulance service plays within the modern NHS. As soon as you dial 999 the ambulance service is readying its emergency response, in some circumstance an emergency ambulance will be heading towards the origin of the emergency call before the ambulance service are able to prioritise the call. In order to ensure the ambulance service can respond to genuine emergencies appropriately the amount of inappropriate calls must be reduced. When to call the ambulance serviceExamples of medical emergencies include (but are not limited to):- chest pain- difficulty in breathing- unconsciousness- severe loss of blood- severe burns or scalds- choking - fitting or concussion- drowning- severe allergic reactionsWhen its not a life-threatening emergencyIf it is not a life-threatening emergency and you, or the person you are with, do not need immediate medical attention, consider other options before you dial 999:- Look after yourself or the patient at home. If you cannot stay at home, see if family or friends are able to help.

    - Talk to your local pharmacist.- Visit or call your GP.- Call NHS 111.- Visit the NHS Choices website.- Make your own way to your local A&E department, walk-in centre, minor injuries unit or urgent care centre. (Arriving in an ambulance does not necessarily mean you will be treated more quickly.)If you do call 999 the ambulance service may categorize your call as a non-emergency and arrange for an experienced clinician to call you back to ensure you receive the appropriate advice and treatment.

In this country we are privileged to have both a first class health service and ambulance service, but it is fair to say that the ambulance service has struggled to keep up with the increasing demand over the past few years. It is vitally important we support the ambulanceservice by using them appropriately in order to ensure that when we really need them they are available and able to respond quickly and efficiently.

Doodle ChallengeLibraries across North Norfolk are to challenge children this summer to create the longest ever drawingand its all going to be created using every day sticky-notes! During the summer holidays, children are beingasked to doodle a picture on a standard sized sticky-note that best illustrates why they love to visit their local library. The doodles will be put together to make a recordbreaking piece of bunting, as part of this years Summer Reading Challenge, in Libraries acrossthe country to inspire all children to read their choice of library books whilst collecting stickersto complete the fold - up poster. To help inspire the children, local illustrator, Adam Faulconbridge, will be running free workshops in all 8 North Norfolk libraries. At each session he will introduce & demonstrate many different types of book illustration from comic book drawings & Japanese Manga style to traditional printing methods and classroom doodles before each child tries them out.

These workshops are sponsored by FALCON www.falcon-norfolk.org.uk Throughout the summer the children can drop-off their doodles on sticky-notes to their local library (whilst they pick up their latest book to read!) to contribute to their own librarys paper chain of doodles (they might draw just the one they might draw twentyits up to them). Who knows there may be a bit of friendly inter-library competition to see who can create, and contribute, the longest piece of bunting? All the doodles will be joined together to make a record breaking string of bunting and then displayed on Cromer Pier on Saturday 5th September at 2pm. Come and join the stars of the Cromer Pier Show who will be unrolling the masterpiece before they get ready for their 4pm matinee.

......walked into a chemist shop in Brisbane, and asked to talk to a male pharmacist. The middle aged woman he spoke to said she was the only pharmacist and that as she & her sister owned the store, there were no males employed there. She then asked if she could help him but the biker said that it was something that he would be much more comfortable discussing with a male pharmacist. The female pharmacist assured himthat she was completely professional, and that what ever it was that he needed to discuss, he could be confident that she would treat him with the highest level of professionalism. The biker then agreed and began by saying:

This is tough for me to discuss, but I have a .......permanent erection. It causes me a lot of problems, and severe embarrassment, and I waswondering what you could give me for it.

The pharmacist said:Just a minute, Ill talk to my sister.

When she returned, she said: We discussed it at length, and the absolute best we can do is:1/3 ownership in the shop.....A company car...Five home cooked dinners a week..

    ..... And $ 3,000 a month in living expenses.

    Local History & Craft Exhibition

Trimingham Parochial Church council, led by Dot Bradley, organised a Local History andcraft weekend in mid June at the Church, with refreshments in the Pilgrim Shelter.

It was a great success, thank you to all who visited and helping to raise over 500 towards church funds. Dot tells me they are also organising a picnic in the Trimingham Church grounds on Sunday 9th August with live music. Further details will be in the next edition of the Crab Tales.

Thanks to Paul Damen for taking these photos

Fancy Some SHOWBIZ Therapy?Top of the list nestling neatly above the briny has to be The Pavilion Theatre here on Cromer Pier. All aboard, as we cast off for our Pier Playtime. We welcomed the whole of the cast on stage, who were Steppng Out in style to set the party mood. This year for visitors & regulars music and songsare provided by Rachel King, Jane Watkins and Lucy Walsh, comedy illusion & fun are family favourites. Ben Langley and Paul Eastwood had some surprising tricks & oodles of laughs especially during audience participation are always a favourite (Poor Sheila was given some interesting requests)! So funny and with excellent slapstick antics, which are always such fun.Our six dancers were on and off the stage all evening incorporating contempary dance and traditional ballet. They are a big part of the show, which they portray as effortless, but must take many hours of rehearsal. The creative and technical team are brilliant, lighting, music, scenery, back stage work and choregraphy with the beautiful Di Cooke, now in her 13th year at the Pier. How fabulous to see Mr. Bradley Walsh in the audience and to recieve a Hello from him in the foyer.Marlenes youngsters were there for us again, I loved the bubbles, it was a feast for the eyes.Hello to Front Row Jo.This years production was fast moving, classy and colourful with layers of comedy, song and dance.

(Above) Di Cooke & Bradley Walsh

What Do You Think Of This Years Show?I have to say that I would not score the show as highly as Cindy has but would probably give it all a score of 7 out of 10.Why?.. you may well ask.I have always thought that the team of the hard working dancers really makes the show as goodas it can get and these people deserve a great deal more support and recognition from the management team.

Likewise I felt that the team from Marlenes deserved more time on the stage as they are always popular and have been delighting us for years. The only other negative was that I felt the need for more well known & popular songs to be included in the show.

    Philip Keddell.

Be part of it - enjoy it. Long may it reign. The evening culminated with the awards for Pier Of The Year 2015. The National Pier Society Chairman presented them to NNDC and to Openwide Coastal.

The editor would like to thank Cindy Johnson for this review.
