Spring has really still not sprung although the sun is lovely, as the trees and pastures are still without new growth but I am sure by the end of the month when the clocks spring forward on Saturday 28th March we will have daffodils and tulips competing with the beautiful beds of snowdrops we are enjoying throughout the area.Travelling into Nth Walsham as I approached the Norwich road lights from Mundesley the mass of pretty white heads nodding in the breeze makes me wonder was there once a wood here, where now mainly black tarmac.I would not like to go back to thedays of horse & cart travel but I do think we should always think twice if not three times before obliterating our remaining woodland and hedgerows.Deer have been seen walking through Mundesley recently but it is sometime since Ive seen a hedgehog, are they all still asleep?I have really enjoyed watching the boxing mad March hares on the fields of young corn here in Trimingham they really seem to be embracing life and the ritual of this robust courting is comical to observe.

The birds in folk law couple on Valentines day and the crows in North Walsham seem very busy with beaks over-flowingly full of twigs, how do the eggs stay in some of those very precariously perched nests.Easter eggs are in the shops and very tempting they look, and egg hunts are great fun for the kids, many local places are holding them and Northrepps Cottage has a great deal for the daysee their advert on page 7.

Dear Crab Tales Readers,If you like food & a fun quiz night, Aylshams Slow Food group has just the answer! Returning for a seventh year, The Foodie Quiz starts at 7.30pm on Saturday 21st March in Aylsham Town Hall and promises a light-hearted evening of food-related posers. Here are a few pointers: All the questions have a link to food but some are not always immediately obvious. Last year we had a round called Eat Your Greens which featured celebrities with the surname Green. There were also questions about foods across the world, from Dundee cake to potatoes and mulligatawny soup to aubergines. Obviously the Foodie Quiz doesnt take itself too seriously and Slow Food Aylsham aims to provide a fun evening for all the family. A Ploughmans Supper is included for 7.50.Tickets available from Barnwells Newsagents or Salad Days Fruit & Veg, both in AylshamMarket Place or drop an email to: [email protected] Looking forward to seeing you there.Roger WillisChairman, Slow Food Aylsham

The talk gave an insight into seed saving, and also on the ways different seeds had to be sown so they had a good start in life. Advice was given on the types of compost to be used and also the wide variety of pots and modules that are available.Charlotte gave a demonstration on sowing seeds, and gave advice on watering and the use of propagators. The talk concluded with the opportunity to ask questions. The talk was enjoyed by all, and it was well timed as it was a lovely sunny afternoon just right for thinking about seed sowing! The meeting was attended by 48 members, and 2 visitors. The Speaker at our next meeting Tuesday April 7th will be Jaime Blake, Bressingham Gardens, and it starts at 2.30pm at Overstrand Parish Hall, The Londs.

One important thing to note is that here at Lidl in North Walsham there is a parking system where every car entering the car park isphotographed not only then but when they leave as well. When you pay for your goods, the assistant on the till will ask for your car registration number which is then fed into their in-store computer system and registers your vehicle.

    Continued From Front Page

The free car parking is for hour and a half which would enable most to shop and pop to nearby shops and / or the post office. If you do not inform the staff of your cars number you will be sent a bill for parking and not shopping! This is something that the staff in the shop have no control over, it is to deter people using the car park and not the store, all very fair I think, enabling all driving into North Walsham to find a space to park and to shop at Lidl.Of course if you overun your parking time you will also get a fine. Several of my friends have been caught out by this - even when they were only a few minutes over.

Wednesday 4th MarchAfter Launching a paper boat in the grounds of North Lodge Park to advertise the Friends AGM, nearly 100 people packed into Cromer Community Centre for the inaugural meeting of the Friends of North Lodge Park to have their say on the future of the Park.

The Friends feel passionately about the Park, most of us remember when it was a lively place with lots of facilities, said steering group chairCarolyn Candish, The formation of the Friendsof North Lodge Park is the first opportunity forthe community to be part of the decision-makingprocess about what happens in the park. North Lodge Park is in the process of being trans-ferred from NNDC to Cromer Town Council.

The Cromer Town Council had agreed a budget of 21,626 for the Park in 2015-2016, with a 150,000 dowry from NNDC also available. Concern was expressed at the meeting whether the Town Council budget was sufficient as itseemed much lower than previous figures quoted by NNDC for running the Park.

A questionnaire consultation has been designed to start the process of collecting ideas to feedinto plans for the Park. The two-page questionnaire available online and in paper form is designed to provide a flavour of the sort of developments, if any, people would like to see in the Park. The results of the questionnaire will be used to develop plans with the Town Council when ownership of the park is transferred from the District Council, explained Carolyn Candish. The questionnaire can be completed online at: northlodgepark.org.uk Paper copies are available from Budgens in Cromer.

One-Stop Recycling Comes to Thorpe Market!St. Margarets Church started recycling paper over 30 years ago, storing it in the old stable and manually loading it on to the lorry. This was before the days of Landfill Tax rebatesand it had to be sold on the open market, some-times for very a meagre return. The current Landfill Tax Rebate Scheme means that the church receives just over 50 for everytonne recycled, which represents a very importantelement in the survival strategy of our small village church, raising over 1,000 last year. In recent years weve also been recycling glass, following the local councils suggestion that we install a glass-recycling bank.

Now that the car park has been refurbished andthere are no more potholes and puddles to dodge,we thought that it would be a good idea to adda clothing bank to our collection and we warmlyinvite you to recycle your unwanted clothing & textiles at our new Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (SATCoL) clothing bank.

SATCoL operates more than 6,500 clothing banksand over 200 charity shops across the UK and all donations of clean and dry shoes (in pairs), clothing, handbags, belts, bed linens, and blankets will be gratefully received.99% of everything that SATCoL collects is re-used or recycled, with up to 80% being re-worn. Each tonne of textiles thats not thrown away prevents 3.6 tonnes of harmful CO2 emissions and reduces the amount of unnecessary waste sent to landfill.

Profit raised from donations also helps to fundThe Salvation Armys valuable work with peoplewho are vulnerable and in need across the UK, including homelessness and addiction services, care for older people, help at emergency incidents, support for adult victims of human trafficking and a Family Tracing Service. Over the last five years alone SATCoL has presented over 39.5 million to The Salvation Army.

Tom Richardson, area representative for SATCoL,said: Were delighted to be working with St Margarets Church to encourage re-use and recycling within the community. We hope that the new clothing bank will providelocal residents with an easy way to donate their unwanted clothes; it will help us raise millions of pounds for the work of The Salvation Army and divert waste from landfill. To find out more about what happens to donated clothing and textiles, visit: www.salvationarmytrading.org

Two Elderly Ladies... .....had been friends for many decades and over the years, they had shared all kinds of activitiesand adventures. Lately, their activities had been limited to meeting a few times a week to play cards. One day, while playing cards when one looked at the other & said: "Now don't get mad at me.. I know we've been friends for a long time but I just can't think of your name. I've thought and thought, but I can't remember it. Please tell me what your name is."

Her friend glared at her. For at least three minutes she just stared and glared at her. Finally she said: "How soon do you need to Know?"

Book ChoiceA Childrens Book Review.Stick Man by the well known childrens author Julia Donaldson.

All children love sticks, so whats better than reading a book about a living stick, who lives in a tree with his family - Stick Lady and their 3 stick children! One Day Stick Man goes out for a jog, but he did not realise the dangers of being a Stick Man away from home! Dealing with everyday situations for a stick - he gets thrown to a dog! Stick Man, oh Stick Man, beware of the dog! He becomes a pooh stick, racing down a river,is put into a nest, becomes the arm of a snow-man and finally, put in the kindling pile! Will he ever get back to his family tree? Luckily this story has a happy ending. Help arrives when Santa (of course!) descends down the chimney and returns Stick Man to his family tree.As with all Julia Donaldson books, this truly clever story is told in rhythm and rhyme, with catchy repetitive phrases, engaging children and adults! Although its really fun, it also explores feelingsof separation. Children will thoroughly enjoy reading this entertaining book, as well as listening to it being read to them.Published by Alison Green Books

Holocaust SurvivorTalkOn Wednesday 25th February, Paston College was privileged to host a talk given by John Dobai, a survivor of the Holocaust, on his experiences in Hungary during the era of the Nazi domination of Central Europe. This talk was organised by Dave Sparkhall, History Teacher at the College, with the help of Jasper Haywood & Sophie Coles, two students who had been given the opportunity to visit Auschwitz-Birkenau the previous year, via the Lessons from Auschwitz Project which is an annual event organised by the Holocaust Educational Trust.

Johns testimony took in his childhood in Budapest and his familys decision to convert from Judaism to Catholicism to escape the increasing anti-semitism advancing across Europe during the 1930s and 1940s.

Kirstys Community Arts group called: Drawn Together has received a grant from the Lottery to run free creative workshops. Last October Kirsty ran 3 days of workshopsat Sheringham High School, which were very successful with everybody enjoying themselves and many making new friends.

Kirsty said: My aim was to get people of all ages together to work alongside each other, so that parents/grandparents were encouraged to create their own artworks rather than just being there to help their kids which is usually what happens in family craft events.

.....as listed in Crab Tales Special Events.

On Sunday March 8th I turned up to witness the first of five Sunday Afternoon free Art workshops run by Kirsty OLeary-Leesonat the Cromer Junior School. This wonderful Art Shop had all 10 adults and 8 children working hard at it, creating some imaginative and enterprising work. The workshop began with Kirsty explaining what kind of materials were available before class members took up their projects.I make no claim of knowing what everyone was about to achieve but it all looked very promising with everyone having their own ideas, and importantly enjoying themselves.

    Kirstys Free Art Workshop......

The workshops are not just for families but for anyone with several older people coming along and enjoyed being in a mixed aged class, rather than just being stuck with other retirees. This is particularly the kind of age group I really want to reach but I find it difficult to do so.As well as taking this popular class, Kirsty is a Teaching Assistant at the school. It is a case of watch this space for future classes or check for the dates of the next workshops in our Special Events pages. All workshops are free but Booking is Required. Suitable for ages 8 - 80.

To a hushed crowd of around 200 students, Johndescribed the political & military events that ledto his fathers imprisonment in a forced labour camp and the circumstances that ended with bothhim & the rest of his family escaping deportationto Auschwitz due to the courageous actions of Raul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat.Students were able to ask questions about Johnsexperiences which included: do you forgive your persecutors? which he answered by stating that although he could not forgive them, he did not hate them. A remarkable answer from a remarkable person.

Apprenticeships Norfolk NetworkAiming to make it simple for employers and young people to find out more about apprenticeships and take the next step to recruiting or becoming an apprentice. As part of this drive, Norfolk County Council is recruiting 4 new apprentices to encourage and support businesses in the county to employ their own apprentices. These individuals will champion the role that fellow apprentices can play within Norfolk businesses.Another aspect of their work will be to enable individuals to find the right apprenticeship job to suit their skills and talents, with a special focus on vulnerable young people.Residents interested in applying for the four apprentice positions are asked to visit:www.norfolk.gov.uk/jobsBev Spratt, Chair of Norfolk County Councils Economic Development Sub-Committee said:Apprenticeships provide a great way for anemployer to fill skills gaps in their business,as they are investing in an individual who is committed to learning sector specific skills on the job. This can often prove more cost effective for a company than hiring more experienced staff. Recruiting experienced staff can also sometimes be a challenge for businesses in some areas of NorfolkThrough the Network, colleges and training providers regularly visit schools to promote Apprenticeship opportunities.

An Aussie Blonde..........was sent on her way to Heaven. St Peter met her at the Pearly Gates. Im sorry, St Peter said, but we are suffering froman overload of godly souls and have been forcedto put up an Entrance Exam for new arrivals to ease the burden of Heavenly Arrivals.Thats cool said the Blonde. What does the Entrance Exam consist of?

Just three questions said St Peter.Which are? asked the Blonde. The first, said St Peter, is: which two days of the week start with the letter T? The second is: How many seconds are there in a year? The third is: What was the name of the swagman in Waltzing Matilda? Now, said St Peter, Go away and think about those questions and when I call upon you, I shall expect you to have those answers for me.So the Blonde went away and gave those three questions some considerable thought. The following morning, St Peter called upon the Blonde and asked if she had considered the questions, to which she replied: I have.

Well then, said St Peter, Which two days of the week start with the letter T?The Blonde said, Today and Tomorrow.St Peter pondered this answer for some time, and decided that indeed the answer can be applied to the question.Well then, could I have your answer to the second of the 3 questions St Peter went on, how many seconds in a year? The Blonde replied: Twelve!Only twelve exclaimed St Peter, How did you arrive at that figure?Easy, said the Blonde, theres the second of January, the second of February, right through to the second of December, giving a total of twelve seconds.

St Peter looked at the Blonde and said: I need some time to consider your answer before I can give you a decision. And he walked away shaking his head.A short time later, St Peter returned. Ill allow the answer to stand, but you need to get the third and final question absolutely correct to be allowed into Heaven. Now, can you tell me the answer to the name of the swagman in Waltzing Matilda? The blonde replied: Of the three questions, I found this the easiest to answer.

Really! exclaimed St Peter, And what is the answer? Its Andy.

Andy??Yes, Andy, said the Blonde. This totally floored St Peter, and he paced this way and that, deliberating the answer. Finally, he could not stand the suspense anylonger, and turning to the blonde, asked: How in Gods name did you arrive at THAT answer?Easy said the BlondeAndy sat, Andy watched, Andy waited till his billy boiled.

    And the Blonde entered Heaven..?

Thanks to David Thorne for this.

Depression/Anxiety& Common Mental Health Issues Depression is common and affects approximatelyone in ten people. Many of us feel down or unhappy for a few days and this is relatively normal; people suffering from depression feel down for weeks or months at a time.Symptoms are very variable, and can often mimic physical diseases (this is particularly common in the elderly & children) making it difficult to diagnose accurately. The symptoms can include any or all of the following: feeling down, feeling anxious, tearful, tired, sleeping too much or too little, weight gain or loss, anxiety, lack of motivation and enjoyment, poor sex drive etc.As you can see the job of diagnosing depressionis difficult & relies on the doctor excluding medicalcauses (often with blood tests), performing somebasic screening questionnaires and using experience to fill in the missing bits!Treatment for depression relies on a combinationof counselling and or medication in General Practice. Patients can help themselves as having a healthy diet, taking more exercise and cutting down on alcohol has been shown to make a difference.Mild to moderate depression will respond well to counselling and CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) which can be accessed by ringing the Wellbeing Service on: 0300 1231 503. If these self-help ideas are of no benefit then please ring and make an appointment with the GP surgery.Medication for depression is safe and there is no truth in the myth that it is addictive and patients stay on it forever! However many patients do require 6-12 months of treatment before a reduction can take place and the treatment takes approximately 3-4 weeks to start to have any noticeable benefit.Anxiety is again a very common symptom; onewe have all experienced at some stage in our lives, eg, before our driving test or major exams, so we all know the symptoms. Chronic anxiety however can take over lives. Patients avoid doing the things which cause anxiety, so if they avoid going out, they may become agoraphobic. Anxiety can present in this way as a chronic (long term) problem or can occur in attacks (often described as panic attacks) which can be disabling and very unpleasant.

Symptoms of chronic anxiety are varied and variable but include: palpitations, weight loss or gain, feelings of being outside your body, diarrhoea, abdominal pains, nausea and loss of appetite, headaches and fatigue. Some of these can be indicators of physical problems so again the GP or Nurse may arrange some blood tests to rule them out.Anxiety used to be managed with drugs (often tranquilizers such as Diazepam). These drugs are effective only for a short period of time and counselling or CBT is much more effective. The Wellbeing service will take self-referrals on: 0300 1231 503 or you could visit their website: www.readytochange.org.uk where you can book an appointment or seek further information.Other psychiatric illnesses seen in General Practiceinclude schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, delusionaldisorders & other psychoses. These are far more serious and tend to be picked up in General Practice but are managed in a hospital setting. If you require further information about these conditions visit: www.nhs.uk where a wide variety of information can be found.

On His 70th Birthday..a man was given a gift certificate by his wife. The certificate was for a consultation with an Indian medicine man living on a nearby reservation who was rumored to have a simple cure for erectile dysfunction! The husband went to the reservation and saw the medicine man. The old Indian gave him a potion and with a grip on his shoulder warned: This is a powerful medicine. You take only ateaspoonful, and then say:1-2-3. When you do,you will become more manly than you have ever been in your life, and you can perform for as long as you want. The man thanked the old Indian and as he walked away, he turned and asked:How do I stop the medicine from working? Your partner must say: 1-2-3-4, he replied, But when she does, the medicine will not work again until the next full moon.He was very eager to see if it worked so he wenthome, showered, shaved, took a spoonful of the medicine, and then invited his wife to join him in the bedroom. When she came in, he took off his clothes andsaid: 1-2-3. Immediately, he was the manliest of men. His wife was excited and began to throw off her clothes, and then she asked: What was the 1-2-3 for?And that, boys and girls, is why we should never end our sentences with a preposition, because we could end up with a dangling participle.

To most people, an appointment witha lawyer may seem a daunting and expensive prospect. Thanks to Norfolk Community LawService, North Norfolk residents can access free and confidential legal advice at a friendly venue within the community. NCLS runs a weekly Free Legal Adviceservice at Merchants Place in Cromeroffering 15 minute appointments on Tuesdays between 5pm & 7pm. Sessions cover Employment, Family, Wills, Probate & Elderly Client Care. Clients are encouraged to come totheir appointment with all the relevant paperwork. In the last twelve months, over 120residents have benefited from theservice & client satisfaction remainshigh with feedback with comments such as: very useful, solicitor wasvery helpful indeed, wonderfully reassuring, brilliant, good adviceand great service. The service would not be able to operate without the support and dedication of local volunteers. Six solicitors based in Nth Norfolk give their time & expertise for freeto help those who could not other-wise afford proper legal advice. One of the participating solicitors says:The advice sessions at Cromer are a fantastic resource providing a service that otherwise would not be available in North Norfolk.

Due to cuts in legal aid there are a huge number of people that would fall through the net, people who needlegal advice but cannot afford to pay to see a solicitor.Volunteer receptionists also play a vital role as they put clients at ease and help them to register with the service. Staff at Merchants Place CommunityResource and Learning Centre have been extremely supportive and provide cover reception when NCLS volunteers are unable to attend. Last but not least, NCLS is grateful to Cromer Town Council and Big Lottery Fund for their financial contribution to the service.

To book an appointment with theFree Legal Advice service in Cromer, please ring NCLS offices on: 01603 496 623. Are you a solicitor based in North Norfolk? Would you like to contribute to makelegal advice more accessible by getting involved in our rota?
