How Often Do You Get Those Calls ?Just as you are about to sit down and enjoya quiet evening meal with the wife, husbandand or the family around you, the phonegoes and you answer it.

And guess what - it is someone trying to sellyou something like, home insurance, doubleglazing, home improvements, life insuranceor suggesting that you can make a claim onyour car insurance.

So how do you react to these nuisance calls?

Before going out on the streets to ask somejolly souls I thought about this and askedmyself if it got up my nose that much?

Not that much, in fact, I sometimes quiteenjoy the experience for some sad reason. My usual reaction is to give them incorrectinformation, particularly when they ask memy age, after going through the age gaps to

between 80 and 85, I tell them that I am infact 97 this year and give them a birthdaydate which is always incorrect. When they ask what my wife does as a jobI always suggest that I am happily marriedto a man a lot younger than I am.Likewise when they ask about our income,I always say over 150,000 per annum, plus

bonus payments, which I cannot rememberat the moment. By this stage they are politeenough to not suggest that my answers arenot wholly true.

Once, when asked if I would like to changemy mobile phone, I asked them if that wasone without a cord attached and when theysaid yes, I said : well that is what Im

    presently talking to you on.

After at least another ve minutes whilethey explain to me what a mobile phoneis, I assure them that I would never wantone of those as I never go out of the house, and they seem to have forgotten thatI am 97 this year.

Sad as I may be I quite enjoy misleadingthese good folk, simply doing their jobfor some large pushy company.

The rst good souls to take my questionswere (Above) L-R Tag (The Dog) Roseand Keith from Bedfordshire enjoying

Can Mundesley follow suit or evenpossibly Cromer or Aylsham?

Can I draw readers attention to thearticle onPage 8.

I hope that any and every communitycould at least consider this idea ofgrowing more vegetables and fruitin the empty plots, that I am surealready exist, for our communityto take control of and develop for

the benet of the many insteadof possibly the few.

At this early stage, I have written toour Parish Clerk in Mundesley andhave asked for this idea to be puton the agenda for discussion atleast in the near future.

It is with great sadness that I learntthat Don Venvell had passed away,as he and his wife Clyte have doneso much for their community inwhich they live.I recall that Don and Clyte wereinstrumental in helping to get theMundesley Visitors Centre upand running so smoothly.

See Page 10.I must say how surprised I was bythe reaction to cold calling that ourlocal people had. (See Front Page& Page 6) I was very aware thesetelephone cold calls upset peoplebut I was surprised by the extentof how much they upset people.

I have always been reasonablypolite when they phone me,but I have never purchasedanything from them.

    And I never will.

When do you start thinking aboutChristmas and New Year?So far I have already seen some ofthe festive decorations already outas well as pre-Christmas offers ondisplay around the place. Mainlyin Norwich as yet.

So should we, in early October, bealready thinking about Christmasand the whole festive comingand going?

The answer is probably Yes,as you cannot get awayfrom it all.

    Enjoy YourCrab Tales

    From The Editor

Dear Mr Keddell,I would like to say how lovely it is to have theCrab Tales again. It is like seeing an old friend.Coming to Mundesley, without picking up myCrab Line was not the same and I also read itonline when at home.Recently I was interested to read the letter fromNigel Holmes RE growing beans. I was scepticalat rst about the wild owers, but they have madea pretty display in the village.

Having visited the town of Todmorden, on theLancashire /Yorkshire border, my mind wasalso running along the lines of growing herbs

and vegetables. At Todmorden the community has utilised everyavailable piece of spare ground to grow foodstuffs. For instance, alight from the train and pick yourvegetables for dinner at the station.

The Police Station forecourt has raised bedswith celery and beetroot etc.

Dear Editor,The Daily Mail has recently printed storiesabout my Dad. The headlines called himThe Man Who Hated Britain.

There was a time when politicians stayed silentif this kind of thing happened, in the hope thatit wouldnt happen again. I will not do that.

This isnt about me and my family this is aboutdoing whats right. Speak up for decency inBritish politics, and add your name to mine.

It is perfectly legitimate for the press to talk about my fathers politics but when they say he hated

Britain, I was not willing to put up with that.My father loved Britain. After he arrived in Britainas a refugee from Nazi Germany, he joined theRoyal Navy. He did so because he was determinedto be part of the ght against the Nazis and tohelp his family hidden in Belgium.

    He was ghting for Britain.

Britain was a source of hope and comfort formy dad, not hatred. He loved Britain for thesecurity it offered his family and the gentledecency of our nation.

The simple truth is something has really gonewrong when a newspaper attacks the familyof a politician - any politician - in this way.

I wont stay silent when it happens thats

why I have written a reply in todays Mail.I hope you take a moment to read it, and thensay you wont stay silent either.

We can be better than this.

    Thank you,

    Ed Miliband

Dear Philip,It is with great sadness I discovered thatAll Things Cake is soon to close.

Another marvellous individual and unique shopforced to close because of the greed of others.

It joins theNorfolk House Company in the ranksof something that was GOOD for Cromer.

No doubt another empty shop will haunt us formonths - or some other normal sighting all toocommon...... ...estate agent or charity shop.

May I wish Mandy & Nick well in their future and

thank them for the time they tried so hard for.Sandi Carpenter

Dear Philip,The Gimingham Village Hall Committee wouldlike to thank everyone who generously donated, supported and attended their fund raising coffeemorning on 28th September for MacMillan.

People came and met friends and neighboursand chatted over refreshments and delicioushome made cakes.

    Thanks once again,

    Colin Hart (Treasurer)

Along the canal there are fruit trees and herbs.

We were given a tour and a talk when visitedTodmorden recently.

Apparently it has pulled the commnuitytogether and reduced petty crime.

So perhaps, next year, I can look forward topicking lettuce, tomatoes, apples, plums etcand the following year locally made jamsand chutneys, from what is grownlocally in Mundesley, at theTourist Information Centre.Sorry about the handwritten letter, but notechnology at my chalet. Time to go home.

    Yours sincerely,

    Margaret Meadows

    Mundesley

    Response from Editor:

Thank you very much for your interesting letterMrs Meadows, I draw your attention to thearticle onPage 8.

Dear Philip,Firstly, a hearty congratulations on the successof the Crab Tales. It certainly has taken offand I am sure will continue to grow further.

I would like to mention the problems we areexperiencing at the moment as a growingbusiness ourselves in the hope that we arenot alone in our endeavours.

Boyers Body Centre (as in vehicle bodies!)started out as a edgling business three yearsago as a one man show so to speak.

Since then, just over a year ago, we took onadditional premises on the same site at HomeFarm Enterprise Zone to accommodateCommercial vehicles and PSVs.

I initially managed to staff these 2 businesseswith relatively little trouble and continued toconduct our business and cement a varied andloyal client base, which we continue to enjoy.

Recently, I have had the opportunity due to theever growing business activities to acquire a3rd workshop premises (at the same site) andhave had difculty procuring new staff tooptimise the work capacity.

We have advertised at the Job Centre, in localmedia (including press & radio) at great expense

but have little success in lling these positions.

I nd it rather strange that with the current joband economic climate being what it is, that thisis the case. Are there any other local businessesthat are experiencing the same frustrations?

It would be interesting to know.I have other expansion plans in the pipeline forthe future including contractual works and wouldideally love to employ from and supportthe local community.

Anybody have any further comments out there?

    Best regards.

    Matthew Boyer : 01263 515 545

Dear Editor,I feel the need to respond to the correspondencein your previous edition regarding the drivingschool cars cruising down the High Streetduring the Cromer Carnival parade.

Not wishing to be unkind, rude or potentiallyharmful to local businesses (or individuals)but, forgive me, I have to start by asking,is this real?

Its just that I nd it hard to a) come to termswith the signatory Chris Posthumus and b)some business sponsoring a hole....No disrespect intended but I do have a rather obtusesense of humour and this letter triggered it.

Picture me now regaining composure, lookingembarrassed and giving a nervous cough.

So now to the point at issue; I feel sad that whilstmany organisations AND businesses went to greatpains, time and effort in designing and buildingmost imaginative and ingenious oats for theCromer Carnival Parade, there seem to be thoseamongst us who believe that coughing up 35 quid(is that the going rate?) to slot a couple of cars

into the ensemble is morally acceptable?Where would this all end if all and sundry wereto adopt this commercial short-cut to get exposureand an unfair share of the action?

I personally feel the local commercial radiostation/s is/are pushing the bounds in thisregard as well and this easy cop-out ishardly entering into the spirit of the event.

To quote the Crab Tales Editor...I do feel theyshould make their oats look fun and Jolly.Ill take it a stage further by suggesting theymake some real effort like the majority ofthe entrants before the parade eventuallybecomes a mere, slowly moving trafcjam of private vehicles.

Perhaps the organisers will take this on boardand insist only on proper decorated oatsfrom now onwards?

    Yours,

    Micky P of Trimingham-on-Sea

Susan Peters from Trunch, while doing herduty at the Mundesley Visitors Centre.

Please note the MVC closed thatevening for the season.

These calls make me very angry as it seemsthey are always in the evening at meal times.Others with more modern phones can seewho is calling to avoid taking the callsbut our phone is pretty old.We have never bought anything ever over the

phone and never will. We have also complainedto BT and they say they can do nothing if thecall is made from outside the UK.

One day we will probably get a modernphone so we can see who is callingbefore answering our phone.

Angela Smith from Mundesley had a quitedifferent attitude to these phone calls:I let them talk to me, then politely tell them that

I will not be taking their services or buyinganything off them. I never simple hang upon them but let them speak.

Certainly, Angelas approach to this situationthat we all nd ourselves in, is possibly thebest way to deal with these calls.

For advice on how to stop these calls go online:tackling-nuisance-calls-and-messages/

Quick tips to stop nuisance calls

To stop unwanted sales & marketing calls, registeryour phone number either landline or mobile with the Telephone Preference Service. Its freeand takes 28 days for a ban to come into effect.

Talk to your provider about their services to blockunwanted calls. For example, BT offers a number

of services to help stop unwanted calls, includingPrivacy at Home, Choose to Refuse andAnonymous Call Rejection.

    Other providers offer similar services.

You can rest assured that you will not begetting any unwanted calls from us.

    PK

Continued From Front Pagetheir late lunch of sh and chips outsideMary Janes in Cromer. They said: PPI is one company that seem tophone us both pretty often asking if we arein debt. Which we are not, thank goodness. We just hang up straight away, thankfully weseem to be getting less of these God forsakencalls these days. In fact we have not hadmany recently at all.

Ric Bannington who works with Icarus Hinesin Cromer. Most of my calls are through the mobile and Ijust hang up straight away. Problem solved.

Norma Green & Paul Bryant from Shefeld, who were staying at the Hotel De Paris. Before answering your questions can we bothsay how much we enjoy staying here.

As for these calls, we often get ones fromPPI re payments as well as ones from gasand electricity suppliers and also fromcomputer suppliers. We are often asked if we have problems gettingin and out of the bath, trying to sell us bathingequipment, all very boring to handle so we justhang up on them as soon as possible.

It is all so rude simply phoning you out of theblue. Neither of us like to put up with it at all.

No we would never buy over the phone any

form of service. The next people I asked in Cromer were (above

right) L-R: Judy Muskett, Katie Day, StephenMiller and Katies son Jamie from Norwich.

We do not like this happening at all, in fact wethink it should be against the law as alot of thedata they get is shared out to other companiesaround the UK.

They seem to be making these calls across thecountry people like PPI, home improvementcompanies, Talk Talk and all the utilitycompanies are all at it.

They often ask if you have had an accidentrecently to make a claim against whoevercaused your accident. It really should beagainst the law.

Andy Walker from the Mundesley Fish &Chip Shop.I seem to get these calls everyday and they reallyare a bore to put up with especially when youare very busy.I just put the phone down on them, particularlywhen we are busy. I understand that you canstop this happening somehow.

Mike Wall from Mundesley awaitinghis sh and chips.

We often get them, sometimes up to more than20 times a day. I normally just hang up straightaway on the them. I will often pick up the phoneand once I know it is one of those types of callswill hang up on them without saying anythingto them.I do hate the calls that come in at around10pm or sometimes even later .

Can MundesleyFollow Suit? The answer must surely be YES.Before going on, I must draw readers attentionto the letter onPage Three that we receivedfrom Margaret Meadows, about her visit toTodmorden, a place we had never heard of.

On reading Margarets letter, we went on tothe net to give readers some examples fromtheir extensive Website which covers all of

the activities undertaken by this caringand delightful community:

Incredible Edible TodmordenThe word about Incredible Edible Todmordenhas spread like wild strawberries and people areexchanging seeds, helping planting, involved inevery school & church, doing it for themselves.News of our campaign has spread far and widewith volunteers giving talks about our work andother initiatives which include lots of peopleborrowing our ideas. All sorts of groups have adopted the IncredibleEdible name, from near-neighbours in Rossendaleto fellow Yorkshire folk like Wakeeld and topeople from all over the world who come tovisit and share ideas.

We work in partnership with other long-standinglocal groups like Todmorden in Bloom, TodmordenPride and many local businesses to promoteand improve Todmorden.Calderdale Council have adopted polices borough-wide to remove obstacles stopping the use ofcommunity land for growing, and to giveguidance to groups and public bodiesabout how it can be done.

Land Share And Using Public Land

We have signed our rst community growinglicence with Calderdale Council.Nick Green wrote : It signals a quantum shift inthe institutional mind set. Where previously theintention was to be authoritarian and controlfreakish, or to abdicate responsibility totallyby selling off property, this is a middle way,it signals trust.

We may sometimes be stroppy but we have alsoworked to earn that trust. The licence is anexample of how our campaigning actionhas tried to bring about change.

Sometimes weve just gone ahead and grownon vacant plots, but were always aiming tochange minds so that public bodies - and the public, look differently at local land, and atthe idea of local food.

    Growing Round Town

Volunteers have been growing vegetablesaround Todmorden for three years now,

and herbs for longer.Mostly weve had permission; sometimes, well, you just have to go ahead and do it.

    Why Not Go Ahead Yourself?

In our rst year the beds outside TodmordenCollege yielded leeks that were cooked byHigh Fearnley-Whittingstall when hecame for our Harvest Festival.Nowadays the college actually knows thatwe are growing them and who can haveplanted the vegtables at the AbrahamOrmerod Centre?

Or those cherry trees in Lidls car park?

Currently volunteers are focusing on our land atWalsden you can see it from the train and fromthe canal where we are creating a nursery forseeds, plants, veg & a resource for learningand job-training.

    Community Herb Gardens

The IETs herb garden on the Burnley Roadopposite the park entrance has been a greatsuccess. Yes, all our herbs are legal andexcellent for zapping up your cooking.

Its the fth year for this and the herb gardenat Todmorden Station, originally courtesyof Todmorden in Bloom.

And if youre a commuter, waiting for a trainwhy not yank out some of those naughty weedswhile you wait, then reward yourself with adeliciously smelling sprig or two!

Whats more, IET have gone on to create an

apothecarys garden next to the car park ofthe new Health Centre. Yes, herbs can aidgood health as well as tasting yummy.

The listings and details of what is going onwith these gardens in Todmorden is endless,so I would strongly suggest readers to visit:

A Gentleman WhoWill Be Sadly MissedBy ManyDon Venvell, who died at 84, in Knapton wassomeone who was respected and admired byall who had the opportunity to meet him.

I rst met Don some years ago, when he andhis wife Clyte, stepped in to help set up theMundesley Visitors Centre.

This was when the Tourist Information Centrewas closed by the local authority.Don took on the role of being the Treasurer withClyte as Secretary, which they both continued todo for many years, before poor health, sadly, took hold of them both.

Don had always led a very busy life, devotingso much time to everything that he took on,

as the Chairman of NNDC in 1998 and 1999,and Clerk to both Knapton and Paston ParishCouncils as well as being an active memberof the local Liberal Democratic Party.

After winning a scholarship to the ManchesterGrammar School, aged only 10, he went on togain a 1st class degree in English andGerman at Durham University.

From University he went on to teaching Englishand became head of his department in a numberof schools before moving into senior educationin Shropshire and then in London, where he

also served on a number of nationaleducation committees.

Alongside being a Governor at Paston College, and at Antingham & Southrepps Primary School,he was treasurer of the Knapton MillenniumCommittee which worked to provide thevillage with a garden and wildlife areaon the Milliennim Green.

With his love of music, Don chaired the CromerMusic Evening events at Templewood as wellas being the Knapton Church Organist.

I have many fond memories of Don working asthe Treasurer of the Mundesley Visitors Centreand of attending his 80th Birthday Party whichwas held in Mundesley Parish Hall.

One could not but admire Dons willingness toget involved and to help others, right up untilvery recently before his illness took over.

He is survived by his widow Clyte, threechildren from his 1st marriage and histhree grandchildren.

The funeral will be held in Knapton Church onTuesday October 15th at 2.30pm and will befollowed by his burial in the churchyard.

I would like to thank very much Paul Damenfor supplying this photograph which he tookat Dons 80th Birthday.

Alfresco Diningin MundesleyMundesleys Village Cafe, having opened inFebruary this year, is now offering outdoordining in their back garden behind theCafe in Station Road.

Derek and Liz Bowler have put a great deal oftime and energy into this attractive cafe, in thecentre of Mundesley, with good service, alongwith a friendly approach towards their growingnumber of visitors every day.

Despite it being a windy day when I popped infor a coffee, the back yard was very shelteredand in fact as warm as the service provided by

(L-R Below) Natalie Kenyon, who began towork for Derek in July this year, Derek and(on right) Danni Cooper, who as been withthem since Day One, back in February.

It really is a case of providing good, honestand friendly service and that is what Derekhas achieved with this delightful place.

Also highly commended was the extension toSt. Andrews Church, Holt, which the judgessaid very effectively married community andchurch needs with innovative and strikingdesign. The extension has added anotherdimension to the church and its rolewithin the community.

Dragon House, a new house built on the siteof a previous dwelling on Letheringsett Road,Thornage, received a commendation.

The buildings large, curved, zinc roof and themixture of traditional brick and int materialsmake it a particularly striking development.

The building was praised by the judges forthe way it compliments and responds to itssurroundings and the landscape setting.

The yard was neglected and unused but theproject has restored the traditional brick &int outbuildings and has also transformedthe area by developing opportunities forpopular new businesses.

The project included the complete restoration ofthe Grade II Listed house Greenways, whichfronts on Bull Street, for holiday lettings.

The Hoppers Yard development shows howheritage can be at the core of new businessactivity and conservation-led regeneration.

Weybourne PrioryWins Major Council Design AwardThe 2013 NNDC Graham Allen Award forbuilding conservation & design has beenwon by the 11th Century AugustinianPriory at Weybourne.

The project involved the consolidationand stabilisation of the Grade I Listedruins of Weybourne Priory, which hadbeen deteriorating for many years andwere becoming seriously eroded.

The conservation work also uncovered a numberof previously unknown features, including a gothic

arched stone doorway to the cloisters.A bold new contemporary monopitch gardenroom has been cleverly tucked away in amongstthe remains of the priory, which provides anew sheltered space within the garden forthe owners.

The panel of judges all agreed it was worthy ofthe prestigious award for its high conservationvalues, the expert approach of the contractorsand for the innovation of the project.

Hoppers Yard, a new retail developmentand holiday let in Bull Street, Holt, washighly commended.

A Cup Of TeaOne day my mother was out and my dadwas in charge of me.

    I was maybe 2 1/2 years old.

Someone had given me a little 'tea set' as a gift, and it was one of my favorite toys.

Daddy was in the living room engrossed in theevening news when I brought him a little cupof 'tea', which was just water.

After several cups of tea and lots of praisefor such yummy tea, my mum came home.

My dad made her wait in the living room towatch me bring him a cup of tea, because itwas 'just the cutest thing!'

Mum waited, and sure enough, here I camedown the hall with a cup of tea for Daddyand she watched him drink it up.

Then she said, (as only a mother would know),

Did it ever occur to you that the only placeshe can reach to get water, is the toilet?

While Walking.......along the sidewalk in front of his church, our minister heard the intoning of a prayerthat nearly made his collar wilt.

Apparently, his 5-year-old son and hisplaymates had found a dead robin.

Feeling that proper burial should be performed, they had secured a small box and cotton wool, then dug a hole and made ready for thedisposal of the deceased.

The minister's son was chosen to say theappropriate prayers and with sonorousdignity intoned his version of what hethought his father always said:

'Glory be unto the Faaather, and unto theSonnn, and into the hole he goooes.'

In The Top 100 Local Shops So Far

Derek Balding (pictured above) in his Sparshop in Mundesley, has forthe second yearrunning been placed in the top 100 localshops across the British Isles.

Pretty Jolly Good, as far as I am concerned,

considering the number of shops that putthemselves forward every year.

You cannot but like Derek a great deal as heis a doer and provides a great service to thegood folks of the village and beyond.

By around the end of November, Derek, andhis jolly team, will know how they havefared in this international competition.

So how has he pulled this off for the secondyear running?

Surely it is not simply because he stocks theCrab Tales(see below) every fortnight.

I have to say that is surely a good enoughreason on its own, if you ask me.

Derek has now owned and run the Spar shopfor over 10 years now andit seems to getbetter every time that I go into the shop.

I believe that Derek and his team deserveto win rst place in this competition, andI wish them all the very best.

Meanwhile it is a case of ngers crossedand good luck Derek.

A Few SuggestionsBy Dr. Henry Harris-Hall,

    Mundesley Medical Centre

Having been a GP for over 30 years with nearly27 spent in Mundesley, I would like to offer afew suggestions to help patients get thebest service from their local surgery:

Surgery staff are there to provide you withthe best possible health care. There is a great demand on primary care, so ifyou do not always get an appointment with whomyou want, when you want it, please acceptother choices offered by the practice staff.

Doctors receptionists do a very difcult job,and really do want to help patients get the bestfrom the service. PLEASE do not shout orotherwise abuse them or any other memberof staff.

Modern health care is often provided byprofessionals other than GPs.To improve efciency you may be offered an

appointment with, for example, a health careassistant/practice nurse/nurse practitioner.Sometimes you will be offered a telephone callwith a health care professional to discuss your

problem, please accept this as a genuine attemptto provide appropriate health care.

Health care professionals welcome the wideruse of the internet, but if you have done someresearch into your problems before you attend,it would be helpful to say so initially rather thanproviding this at the end of the consultation.

If you have more than one problem to discussplease mention this at the start of the consultationso you do not run out of time or if you think youwill need more time than a standard appointmentplease book a longer appointment, even if you

have to wait a little longer to get one. If it would help you, do bring a friend orrelative to the consultation, but please donot ask the health care professional abouttheir health problems. Please try to have young children looked afterwhen you attend, or if this is difcult try andensure they are well behaved whilst you arediscussing your problems.

Home visits are occasionally made to patientswho are truly housebound or very ill; please donot request one unless you really need to so do.Most patients are more fully assessed and treatedat the practice premises. Please consider gettinga lift, using public transport or arranging a taxi.

Whilst practices will make reasonable attempts

to provide last minute health care, please requestmedications or holiday inoculations in good time.

Most minor conditions are self limiting and donot need attendance at a surgery.

You can obtain advice online at:

    http://www.nhs.uk/Pages/HomePage.aspx

    or from your pharmacist.

If you have a serious medical condition like:chest pain, breathing difculties, signs of a stroke

or major haemorrhage, trying to contactingthe surgery rst may delay the attendanceof a paramedic or ambulance: dial 999if this is more appropriate.

If you are not happy with the service you havereceived from your surgery, initially discuss thiswith your health care professional or practicemanager. There are well documented ways totake matters further if you are not happy withthis but local resolution of problems,if possible, is nearly always best.

This article aims to supply information of ageneral nature and cannot substitute for theadvice of a medical professional.

The article is not intended to diagnose health

problems or to take the place of professionalmedical care. If you have any concerns, consult your own doctor.

While Working..........for an organization that delivers lunches toelderly people in their home, I used to take my4-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds.

She was unfailingly intrigued by the variousappliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs.

One day I found her staring at a pair of false teethsoaking in a glass and as I braced myself for theinevitable barrage of questions, she merelyturned and whispered:

'The tooth fairy will never believe this!'

Only the Labour Party can be trusted to standup for ordinary people up against three otherTory parties.

The by-election takes place onThursday 24th October.

See Page 10 for the list of all the candidateswho are standing for North Walsham East.

    Cornet or TrumpetWhats The Difference?

Noooo! You dont lick one and blow the other. For those who may not know it, they are twomusical instruments which are almost the same.

(Thinking about it, you could put a huge dollopof ice cream in the bell of a cornet and ...phew,what a blow out.)

Seriously though, the difference between thetwo is in the shape of the tube through whichthe air travels to produce the notes.

The result is that the cornet has a moremellow tone than the trumpet, whichproduces a sharper sound.

While cornets, and not trumpets, are the choiceof brass bands, there are many musicians whoplay both, as do some of the bandsmen/womenof the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band.

But hey, to hear what a cornet sounds like whynot come along at 7.30 pm to the Bands Concertat St Peters Church, Sheringham,on Saturday 26th October.

The concert is being held to raise funds forrenovation of the Church. Admission is free, although any contribution you would like tomake to the retirement collection would bevery much appreciated.

Finally, if you feel that deep inside you therelurks the desire to learn to play a cornet, orany other brass band instrument come tothat, why not have a chat with a memberof the band on the evening of the Concert.

Alternatively, visit our web site below.

Remember you are never too old, or tooyoung, to learn to play.

See you on Friday the 26th October atSt Peters Church.

    Gardeners WorldStory Comes ToSheringham

There have been many presenters of the BBCsGardeners World since it was rst broadcast in1968 but surely the best loved was the showslongest-serving presenter , Geoff Hamilton, who was associated with the programmefrom 1979 until his death in 1996 when hesuffered a heart attack on a charity bike ride.

His practical hands-on experience, down-to-earthapproach to gardening and his desire to share hisfailures as well as his successes with the audience, combined with a gentle humour were some ofthe keys to his success and popularity.

He was a committed & informed early advocateof the organic approach to gardening, helping todispel the rather widely held belief that organicgardening was slightly odd and cranky.

In 1985 Geoff was responsible for moving theshows venue to his own garden at Barnsdalein Rutland.

This garden, now consisting of 38 themed gardens

over 8 acres remains open to the public and isrun by his son Nick.

Nicks passion for gardening started when he wasaged 9 and after attending Writtle College whichincluded a sandwich year placement at DarbyNursery Stock in Norfolk, he returned toBarnsdale in 1989 to work with hisfather in the family business.

Nick took over the running of Barnsdale Gardenswhen Geoff died and has developed it into theinspirational garden that it is today and whichattracts over 40,000 visitors each year.

On Thursday 17th October Nick Hamilton willbe coming to Sheringham to talk about his fatherand the years of lming Gardeners World atBarnsdale and everyone is welcome.

Nick will also be bringing a selection of hisplants from Barnsdale to sell on the night.

The meeting which is free to members ofSheringham Horticultural Society will beheld in the Lighthouse Community Church,62 Cromer Road, Sheringham and starts at7.30pm. with a charge of 3 for visitors.
