The City of Scranton Pittston Union Dale L ACKAWANNA R IVER W ATERSHED The Lackawanna River Heritage Trail The Lackawanna River Heritage Trail travels 40 miles along the Lackawanna River. The trail begins at the confluence of the Susquehanna River in Pittston, joins the Delaware and Hudson (D&H) Rail-Trail in Simpson, and continues to Union Dale at the Stillwater Dam. The trail extends north to the New York State border to complete the 70-mile, multi-purpose trail system. Lackawanna Heritage Valley National and State Heritage Area The Lackawanna River Heritage Trail is a project of Lackawanna Heritage Valley National and State Heritage Area, a partnership of government, business, civic organizations, and individuals dedicated to the development of the region’s historic, cultural, economic, and natural resources through preservation, education, and promotion of our heritage. Lackawanna Heritage Valley 213 South 7th Avenue Scranton, PA 18505 570.963.6730 [email protected] lhva.org www.facebook.com/LackawannaRiverHeritageTrail 2. Dickson City to Archbald The Mid Valley section of trail includes Dickson City, Throop, Olyphant, Blakely, Jessup and Archbald. In Archbald, remnants of a shifting shanty, fan house and oil house from the Gravity Slope Colliery serve as reminders of this area’s industrial past, while an abundance of nature and wildlife are prevalent. River otter and beaver habitats are common in this area, and American bald eagles nest along this stretch of trail. The Lackawanna River, an Exceptional Value Watershed, attracts fishermen from across the country. The Laurel Street Trailhead in Archbald features a fishing pier, and this section of trail is a popular launch point for kayaks. 3. Jermyn to Mayfield Much of this section of trail includes on-street routes that wind through shaded avenues and vibrant downtowns, offering a variety of amenities, including shops and eateries. The urban, on-street portions of the trail are best suited for experienced cyclists. The trail becomes increasingly rural as it extends north. 4. Historic Carbondale The Carbondale Riverwalk begins in Downtown Carbondale and continues north to Simpson where it meets the D&H Rail-Trail. Carbondale offers a number of specialty shops and eateries, public parks, and the Carbondale Historical Society and Museum inside Carbondale City Hall (listed in the National Register of Historic Places). 5. Forest City Forest City in Susquehanna County is a beautiful stop. With a charming main street, visitors enjoy unique shops and eateries along their way to Union Dale, home of the Rail-Trail Council of Northeastern Pennsylvania. PENNSYLVANIA Planned Dickson City trail for 2019 1. The City of Scranton Scranton trail sections include the Downtown Scranton Riverwalk, the CNJ Extension, and the Levee Trail. The Scranton Half Marathon Pavilion at the Olive Street trailhead is a landmark of the Downtown Scranton Riverwalk (accessed via Olive Street or 7th Avenue). The Riverwalk is close to the historic district around Courthouse Square, shopping, dining, arts and cultural venues, colleges and universities, historic sites, parks and recreational centers, and its paths are abundant in nature and wildlife. The Central New Jersey (CNJ) Extension is named after the Central New Jersey Railroad that once ran along its path. Access this section via Elm Street or Broadway Street. Running from South Scranton to Taylor, the trail features rock carvings of wildlife, a sculpture of a Haudenosaunee chief, and an amphitheater with stones representing the Six Iroquois Nations paying homage to the area’s Native American heritage. The Levee Trail (accessed via the Nay Aug Avenue Trailhead) runs atop a portion of the city’s flood control levee. From collieries to textile mills and some of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, this section offers interesting perspective of historic Scranton. The Lackawanna River Heritage TrailThe Lackawanna River Heritage Trail travels 40 miles along the Lackawanna River.

Lackawanna Heritage Valley National and State Heritage AreaThe Lackawanna River Heritage Trail is a project of Lackawanna Heritage Valley National and State Heritage Area, a partnership of government, business, civic organizations, and individuals dedicated to the development of the region’s historic, cultural, economic, and natural resources through preservation, education, and promotion of our heritage.

Lackawanna Heritage Valley213 South 7th AvenueScranton, PA [email protected]/LackawannaRiverHeritageTrail

2. Dickson City to Archbald

The Mid Valley section of trail includes Dickson City, Throop, Olyphant, Blakely, Jessup and Archbald.

3 . Jermyn to Mayfield

Much of this section of trail includes on-street routes that wind through shaded avenues and vibrant downtowns, offering a variety of amenities, including shops and eateries. The urban, on-street portions of the trail are best suited for experienced cyclists. The trail becomes increasingly rural as it extends north.

4. Historic Carbondale

The Carbondale Riverwalk begins in Downtown Carbondale and continues north to Simpson where it meets the D&H Rail-Trail. Carbondale offers a number of specialty shops and eateries, public parks, and the Carbondale Historical Society and Museum inside Carbondale City Hall (listed in the National Register of Historic Places).

5. Forest City

Forest City in Susquehanna County is a beautiful stop. With a charming main street, visitors enjoy unique shops and eateries along their way to Union Dale, home of the Rail-Trail Council of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Planned Dickson City trail for 2019

1 . The City of Scranton

Scranton trail sections include the Downtown Scranton Riverwalk, the CNJ Extension, and the Levee Trail.
