In this eye-opening article, Alan Rusbridger recalls a conversation
with a reporter who worked on the Panama Papers: 'Previously, we
thought that the offshore world was a shadowy, but minor, part of
our economic system. What we learned from the Panama Papers
is that it is the economic system.' In the first of two pieces, the
former Guardian editor reveals the massive scale of global tax
avoidance facilitated not only by the Panamanian law firm Mossack
Fonseca, but by an international system that developed as early as
the 1960s with the end of the British empire.
Okwume v Commonwealth of Australia [2016] FCA
1252
This case is an interesting case about false imprisonment of an

Indigenous Healers
Is there a place for Indigenous Healers in Australia's Health
System? The ngangkari, who treat spiritual ailments along with the
mental and physical, believe that they can help their community in
ways that Western medicine misses. Read the article here.

Update from the ATO
Work continues on a number of initiatives to improve the way the
ATO produces, communicates and delivers public advice and
guidance to provide our clients with greater levels of certainty as
early as possible. The latest of these initiatives to launch is the
Advice under development program.
Replacing both the ‘Public Rulings’ and ‘Law Administration
Practice Statements’ Programs, this new initiative provides a more
contemporary and comprehensive picture of the public advice and
guidance we are currently developing. Updated monthly, our clients
are provided with details for each issue being addressed such as
its purpose and when we expect to publish.
In another first, not only is a full list of the issues for which public
advice and guidance is being developed provided on ato.gov.au –
relevant individual issues are also listed in Legal Database search
results. For example, a search on the Database for ‘transfer
pricing’ will return results for existing public advice and guidance,
as well as anything currently in the pipeline to address issues on
‘transfer pricing’.

You will cry from laughing listening to this
In 2010 Joel and his girlfriend moved from Sydney to Berlin to try
and fix their broken relationship. After a month she left him and
flew back home. To try and win her back, Joel emailed her 90
minutes of audio recordings that contained; horrendous anecdotes,
horrible Hollywood clichés and he even passed off Pearl Jam lyrics
as his own.
He recently found these lost files and sat down with some friends,
stand-up comedians and a therapist to analyse the lies, depression
and desperation that a breakup brings. Catch it all here.
