Meeting the Needs of All Pupils Effective Differentiation Strategies This workshop will provide NQTs with an opportunity to consider and discuss how best to respond to the diverse and sometimes complex needs of pupils, combining both theoretical and practical approaches to differentiation. Through scenario-based role-plays, NQTs will explore different forms of questioning that ensures effective differentiated learning for all pupils in their class. The session will also look at the importance of meta-cognition, how this affects learners’ attitudes and how it can also be employed as an effective differentiation strategy. Teachers will also have the opportunity to observe how collaborative learning can accelerate the progress of all pupils and will learn how to effectively differentiate resources for groups and individuals.

5/12/2017 9.00am - 12.30pm

Hill West Primary

Outstanding Behaviour Management Strategies In this workshop, NQTs will be provided with a framework for managing and promoting outstanding behaviour in the classroom, allowing for accelerated progress for all learners. They will have the opportunity to observe effective behaviour management strategies in practice and consider how classroom organisation and preparedness can actively promote positive behaviour. The session will also focus on how to minimise low-level disruption and how to deal with challenging examples of behaviour. It will also explore how teachers can develop and nurture positive behaviours for learning in all pupils to maximise learning and progress.

Planning and Designing Outstanding Lessons In this workshop, NQTs will explore what outstanding teaching and learning look like and will begin to develop their ability to plan outstanding lessons. They will consider the current Ofsted Inspection Framework and use this to reflect on their current practice. They will learn how to plan for outstanding progress over time, developing their medium-term planning, as well as having the opportunity to collaboratively plan and deliver an ‘outstanding’ short lesson to pupils. The session will also focus on how teachers can facilitate and support the development of pupils into outstanding learners.

Embedding Phonics/Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar in English A secure understanding of phonics is crucial for the early development of reading and writing skills. This workshop will support NQTs to become confident with the systematic teaching of phonics by providing them with practical and creative activities that they can use in their own classroom. It will develop their understanding of how a secure phonics knowledge can help children become independent literacy learners by supporting them to decode for reading, segment for spelling and write within a broad, rich literary curriculum. They will also understand the expectations for spelling as outlined in the National Curriculum, considering how spelling should form an integral component of every literacy lesson and should be embedded in lessons across the curriculum.

Developing Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving Skills in Maths lessons With the introduction of the new National Curriculum and End of Key Stage Assessment for mathematics, there has been a revised focus on the way in which children are taught and develop 'mastery' in the maths curriculum. This workshop will focus on how to develop fluency and conceptual understanding across different areas of mathematics and will provide examples of how to embed and assess fluency across other areas of the curriculum. NQTs will also explore how reasoning and problem solving can be incorporated into all maths lessons and will become equipped with many practical ideas to apply in practice.

Facing the Future with Confidence Issues in Education for Now and in the Future At the end of the NQT year, teachers will have the opportunity to reflect upon their practice; to celebrate their successes; to discuss challenges they have faced and overcame and begin to think about the year ahead, setting goals that they would like to achieve in the following year. They will review the continually changing landscape of education and consider how future changes could impact on the teaching profession. They will have the opportunity to consider their future career aspirations and begin to create action plans to help them succeed and develop in there second year of teaching.

About As our NQTs move into their second year of teaching, it is important that we develop their skills further and help them refine their practices so that they have every chance of delivering consistently outstanding lessons each and every day. The focus of the NQT + 1 programme should therefore be a continuation of professional development from the first year but with an increased emphasis on teachers working collaboratively across the Teaching Alliance to share best practice in these sessions and to explore more advanced and expert ways of doing things with the benefit of a year’s experience. The programme should conclude with the cohort undertaking a small-scale action research project, which will not only give them the opportunity to ‘specialise’ on a very specific area of learning that they can share with other teachers in the partnership but will also whet their appetite for further post-graduate research in education, for which we can use our already strong links with HE institutions.

Session 4: Tuesday 13th March 2018 Hill West Primary School 4.15pm - 5.30pm Following on from the NQT session, ‘Stretching and Challenging All Pupils to Maximise Progress’, this session will continue to look at more advanced ways in which teachers can get the very best out of the more able learners. In particular, this session will focus on how to stimulate the more able learners by developing their independent thinking skills. Teachers will explore how they can most effectively promote the cognitive development by providing them with opportunities to: question others and themselves; reason and problem solve; use their creativity and imagination; speculate and hypothesise and use the kinds of higher order thinking involved in metacognition.

Session 5: Tuesday 23rd April 2018 Mere Green Primary School 4.15pm - 5.30pm Following on from the NQT sessions which focus on meeting the needs of specific groups of learners (‘Meeting the Needs of All Pupils - Effective Differentiation Strategies’ and ‘Inclusive Learning Strategies - Supporting Students with SEND’), this penultimate session will explore how teachers can analyse gaps in attainment data between groups of pupils, including: boys and girls; children with and without SEND; disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged pupils. Teachers will be guided though how to read data including the school’s internal analysis of classes/cohorts, the Ofsted dashboard and RAISE online. They will then consider specific strategies that can be used to close any gaps in attainment.

Secondary NQT+1

Overview The NQT +1 programme is designed to build on skills learnt during PGCE and NQT year by giving Teachers in their second year the opportunity to reflect on their practice, observe and share practice. Each session will be held in a different school and facilitated by outstanding Teachers and SLEs with an optional learning walk prior to the session.

Classroom Based Action Research This session will look at hot topics in education and the importance of classroom based ac on research. As part of the NQT +1 Programme, participants will undertake their own classroom based research on a theme of their choice. The principles of ac on research will be discussed and methods and approaches of inquiry examined.

Nurturing Independent Learners Metacognition is to have an awareness & understanding of your own though processes. This session introduces the concept of meta-cognition and considers a range of strategies teachers can embed in their lessons to encourage students to reflect on their current level of thinking in order to determine how they are going to move forward.

Habits Of A Highly Effective Teacher This session is based on the work of Stephen Covey, the bestselling author of Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. Explore how teachers can adopt these habits to be successful in the classroom.

This session focuses on observation and feedback, developing the skills of helping others to reflect on their practice within the context of a supportive professional relationship.

Celebrating Event This is an opportunity for participants to take a lead in delivering the findings from their classroom based ac on research and to celebrate their journey as an NQT+1.
