It was in a small envelope, printed neatly in pencil, on a piece of lined, yellow paper stripped from a mini legal pad. It started, “Dear Mr. Sax, My name is Cole. I’m 15 years old, and I just moved to Tucannon Road this September.” Turns out this young man lives across the street from a piece of property I own near Pomeroy. He wrote me to ask if he could hike through my land to get to the top of a nearby hill, promising that he would respect the area if allowed access. “I will not hunt, camp or litter, and I will be thoughtful of whose land it is,” he continued. Cole’s letter – and the care behind it – stopped me short. In today’s busy world, amidst the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, a teenage boy took the time to write a letter to a stranger, respectfully asking to borrow something that wasn’t his. Cole could have easily walked across my parcel of land in less time than it would have taken to write the letter, and nobody would have been the wiser. Instead, he chose a different path, and reached out to me in order to “do the right thing.” Cole’s message gives me hope that there is still plenty of good in the world, that there are young men and women who will grow up to become our future leaders, and parents out there who are preparing them for that responsibility. That feeling of hope swelled inside me, filling my heart and brightening my outlook. This holiday season, I am committed to paying that feeling forward – to finding someone in my life who needs a little lift, and providing it through something I do or say, and I invite you to do the same. I wish you much happiness in the days and weeks ahead as we collectively pause to enjoy the season. May it be filled with love and laughter.
