CPC THIS WEEK: THE E-NEWSLETTER OF CHRIST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH June 7, 2019 The Final D-Day Seventy-five years ago the world’s largest sea-launched attack dealt a decisive blow to the Axis powers in WWII. The phrases “Operation Overlord” and “Omaha Beach” are a tribute to the tenacious resolve and willing sacrifice of young American soldiers; many of whom left blood and birthright on the beaches of Normandy. We rightly pay honor and respect to all those of America’s Greatest Generation who gave that we might live. Their selfless dedication to freedom, both here and abroad, continues to serve as a reminder to us of the high price for the privileges we enjoy today. Privileges, I fear, that we so easily, quickly, and regrettably take for granted. Unfortunately, war continues – the need for a standing military remains. This is not only true of the world in which we live that is seen with physical eyes, but also of that world in which we live that is unseen. And, as a child of God, we live in both. Paul understood that clearly: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” Ephesians 6:12,13 “You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him.” 2 Timothy 2:1-4 One day, and we pray soon, the armies of heaven will follow their King to the battlefields of earth. They will victoriously engage the powers of this present age in a final conflict that will end in the Kingdom of Our Christ. But until that day, as those called to active duty, we join together to combat the wickedness and evil of this “present darkness.” As soldiers of light we are called to stand firm – to hold the line. Today, it is our turn to serve in Christ’s cause against the ancient serpent. Tomorrow, it will be our children who serve. And, by God’s grace we will have trained them well for the fight! We enjoy great freedoms as citizens of this country from those who have gone before us. We enjoy even greater freedoms as citizens of a future country – also from those who have traveled prior to our lives. May God give us the grace and grit to live wisely on all fronts! For the King, PB

CPC THIS WEEK: THE E-NEWSLETTER OF CHRIST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH June 7, 2019

The Final D-Day

Seventy-five years ago the world’s largest sea-launched attack dealt a decisive blow to the Axis powers in WWII. Paul understood that clearly:

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness,

against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God,

that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.”

Ephesians 6:12,13

“You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses

entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him.”

2 Timothy 2:1-4 One day, and we pray soon, the armies of heaven will follow their King to the battlefields of earth. SONG OF THE MONTH

Whate’er My God Ordains Is Right

Whate’er my God ordains is right His holy will abideth

I will be still whate’er He does And follow where He guideth

He is my God, though dark my road He holds me that I shall not fall

And so to Him I leave it all And so to Him I leave it all

Whate’er my God ordains is right

He never will deceive me He leads me by the proper path

I know He will not leave me I take, content, what He has sent

His hand can turn my griefs away And patiently I wait His day And patiently I wait His day

Whate’er my God ordains is right Though now this cup in drinking May bitter seem to my faint heart

I take it all, unshrinking My God is true, each morn anew

Sweet comfort yet shall fill my heart And pain and sorrow shall depart And pain and sorrow shall depart

Whate’er my God ordains is right

Here shall my stand be taken Though sorrow, need, or death be mine

Yet I am not forsaken My Father’s care is round me there

He holds me that I shall not fall And so to Him I leave it all And so to Him I leave it all

! THE CHURCH IN THE WORLD !

Status: Loved

“To Him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by His blood and made us a kingdom, priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.”

Revelation 1:5b-6 This simple song of praise reminds us of our status before God: We are loved. Why is this important? Because it is far too easy to engage in missions – whether praying, supporting, or going – out of guilt or works of righteousness, trying to earn God’s love. And when guilt or works-righteousness is the motivation behind our praying, giving, or going to the nations, then these things become a burden, drudgery, something we simply need to get through. We end up either self-righteous and proud or bitter and cynical. There is another way to engage in this work of missions. It is to begin by reflecting on how much we are loved by Him! To allow His love to fill us, heal us, comfort us, and then and only then motivate us to share His love to others. And so we begin with our status. What is our status before God? We are loved. This statement about us is true before we give, before we work, before we do anything for Him. It is not dependent upon our obedience, our faithfulness, our good works, or our giving. In these verses from Revelation, the word “loves” is a present participle which highlights continuing action. We are loved because we belong to Him – always. And the more we dwell on, accept, and receive His affections, the more passion, joy, and gratitude we have in extending His love to others. It grounds our giving in the grace and freedom we have in Jesus. We do not give out of guilt, or to earn God’s favor, or to feed our idols of pride, or build up our reputation. We give because He loves us and frees us from our sins by His blood. Lloyd Kim, REFLECTION, May 30, 2019 https://www.mtw.org/stories/details/status-loved
