Risk of Climate Change on Pavement Performance and Adaptation Strategies using Big Data

Pavement deterioration is a dynamic processinfluenced by changing environmental conditions,traffic,constructionandmaintenancecharacteristics.Itisestimatedthatby2050,theaveragetemperaturewill increase 2 to 3 degree C in southern Ontario, whichmeansmoreextremeweatherandfloodingwilloccur in the future and the effect alongwith trafficloadcouldmakethepavementdegradationquicker.

Improving Durability of Asphalt Mixes Produced with Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) by Enhancing Binder Blending

Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) has beenfavoured over virgin materials in the light of theunstable cost of virgin asphalt binders, shortage ofqualityaggregates, andcompellingneedtopreservetheenvironmentandnaturalresources.

Themainobjectivesofthisresearchare:toexaminethekinematicsofblendingofagedandvirginbindersby considering the time-temperature effect duringmixing and silo storage, and assess the thermo-mechanical behaviour of Hot MixAsphalt (HMA)containingRAPatdifferentblendingstates.

MillerGroupandSteedandEvansarethesuppliersofthemixturesfromtheirDratch,Drum,andBatchasphaltplants.HMAwillbeproducedbythesupplierswithRAPusingMarshall™mixdesignprocedures:HL3andHL8.HMAmixturewithdifferentpercentagesofRAPrangingfrom15%to40%willbeconsideredinthisstudy.Forcomparisonpurposes,controlmixtureswithoutanyRAPwillalsobeproduced.Sampleswillbecollectedrightafterproductionandatseveraltimeintervalsofsilo-storage(i.e.1,2,4,6,and24hours).To understand the blending phenomena and itseffectontheperformanceofthepavement,amulti-scale investigation is proposed. The EnvironmentalScanning Electron Microscope (ESEM) has beenvalidatedasa toolfor theobservationof thebindermicrostructure.

The performance of HMA containing RAPwill beexamined using dynamic modulus testing, thermalstress restrained specimen testing, rutting testing, and flexural beam fatigue testing. The collectedexperimental evidence will help the scientificcommunitytobetterunderstandthecomplexblendingphenomenon.

Moreover, theproposedprojectwillunveilcorrelationsbetween time-temperature effects and mixtureperformance.Consequently, itwilldeliverasynthesisdocumentthatprovidespracticalrecommendationstotheprofessionalsoftheCanadianasphaltindustryfora better use ofRAP inmore economic, sustainableandenvironmentallyfriendlyasphaltmixes.

SusanTigheGuestLecturesRecently, Susan Tighe was invited to WesternUniversity and the University of New BrunswickTransportation Group Seminars as a guest lecturer. Her lectures were on resilient pavement for thesustainablefuture.

A key aspect to determining if a pavement designcanbeeffectivelyused inCanada is that itmustberesistant to harsh environmental and traffic loads.Currently, publicagenciesarealso investigating thefeasibilityofincorporatingsustainabilityandclimatechangeimpactsintotransportationassetmanagement. The potential benefits are diverse and of strategic

The lecture provided a framework for formally evaluating new materials and designs into pavementengineering.Anevaluationof theconceptofa solar roadand theadvancedapplicationofSEMandCTscanning tools for evaluating and predicting performance of asphalt materials for usage on Canadianpavementswaspresented.EngineeringtoolssuchasFiniteElementformoresustainableandclimatefactorsintoassetmanagementprogrammingatthenetworklevelworkwasalsopresented.
