HIKING Santa Rosa Mountains - Wildflowers abound here in sea-

Ruby Crest National Recreation Trail (South Trailhead) -Situated along the spine of the Ruby Mountains, 42 milesfrom Elko, this well-maintained trail has many hikes tochoose from ranging from 2 - 37 miles in length.

Upper Lamoille Canyon (North Trailhead) - Located at theend of the paved highway through Lamoille Canyon, 25 milesfrom Elko, this unique canyon offers a wide variety of trailhiking possibilities. Hike to several mountain lakes includingLamoille, Island, Dollar, Liberty, Favre and Castle.

Winchell Lake - Trail located on Angel Lake Road is 4miles long, contouring the East Humboldt Mountains. Earlyin the season the trail, about 10 miles from Wells, isenhanced by ample displays of wildflowers in bloom.

Soldier Basin - This trail accesses a beautiful high eleva-tion basin with several lakes and spectacular scenery.Located 36 miles from Elko, the trail can be reached fromtwo sides of the Ruby Mountains.

MOUNTAIN BIKINGBloody Shins - Biking area near Winnemucca offers

beginner, intermediate and advanced trails. Take HighlandDrive to Kluncy Canyon Road and the trailhead.

Jarbidge - Bike spectacular Jarbidge Wilderness Area andmiles of old mining and hunting roads through the moun-tains.

Tuscarora - Quaint town 54 miles from Elko, with deepmining industry roots and rich history. The area does notprovide established trails, but plenty of scenic riding is avail-able.

This rugged 37-mile trail is dotted withalpine lakes and glaciated canyons. Packtrips can be planned to last a few hours orup to four days.

Jarbidge - Ride the Jarbidge WildernessArea and experience weeklong trail ridingtrips with Lowell Prunty.

Overland Lake - There's a gorgeousalpine lake at the end of this challengingtrail in the Ruby Mountains. Top elevationof over 10,000 feet requires at least a threehour ride each way (14 miles round trip).

Secret Pass/Starr Trail - Adventurousmountain riding through prime ranchingcountry, 40 miles from Elko. A rejuvenatingand scenic day trip for any rider.

South Fork State Recreation Area - 16miles from Elko, features a developedcampground offering 25 campsites.

Angel Lake - 13 miles from Wells, AngelLake is the only alpine lake accessible bypaved road in the area. Campground has26 overnight camping sites with 18 sites atAngel Creek.

Wildhorse State Recreation Area - 70miles north of Elko, this area offers beauti-ful views of the Independence Range. Manycampground areas to choose from.

Wilson Reservoir Recreation Area - You'llfind good facilities at this popular site foroutdoor fun. Located 83 miles north-north-west of Elko, via State Route 225 and coun-ty roads.

South Ruby Lake Campground - 37,632-acre national refuge at Ruby Lake featuresa fresh water bulrush marsh, open pondsand grassy uplands. Overnight camping isavailable close to the refuge.

WILDLIFE VIEWINGSilver Island Mountain Byway - You'll find

some great photo opportunities off thebeaten path here. The drive partially followsthe Donner Party Trail. Take Exit 4 offInterstate 80.

Goshute Mountain Watchable WildlifeArea - Wildlife abound in this area, located20 minutes south of Wendover via alternateU.S. Highway 93.

Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge - 65miles from Elko, a fresh-water bulrushmarsh, open ponds and grassy uplands arehome to an amazing variety of birds, fishand animals.

BOATING & LAKE FISHINGRye Patch State Recreation Area - Full boat launch facili-

ties, fishing, camping and a picnic area make this a favoriteof Lovelock-area residents and visitors. Just a mile west of I-80 at Exit 129.

Blue Lake - Located 125 miles north of Winnemucca, thelake is accessed by taking Highway 95 to its junction withHighway 140; the intrepid angler must hike to the lake.Those a little less adventurous might try nearby OnionReservoir.

South Fork State Recreation Area - The park, 16 milesfrom Elko, is best known for trout and bass fishing - withsome catfish also caught. Facilities include a boat launch,campground and picnic area.

Wildhorse State Recreation Area - This 120-acre statepark is centered on the northeast shore of WildhorseReservoir, 70 miles from Elko. Trout, bass, yellow perch andcatfish can all be caught from the shore or by boat.

Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge - Anglers will findprime large mouth bass fishing here. Fly or spin fishing isalso available, as well as the possibility of hooking a real tro-phy trout. Motorized boats are permitted seasonally with a10 hp limit.

Angel Lake - This beautiful alpine lake is accessible bypaved road from Wells and offers plenty of mountain troutand memorable fly fishing. Motorized boats are prohibited.

Wilson Reservoir - 90 miles from Elko, Wilson is remote,but offers great trout and large mouth bass fishing.Motorized boats are restricted to 10 hp.

STREAM FISHINGKnott Creek - 125 miles north of Winnemucca, Knott

Creek is accessed by taking Highway 95 to Highway 140,and turning on the Knott Creek Road.

Lye Creek - 55 miles north of Winnemucca, offers thefisherman 13 developed camping units. Travel north onHighway 95, and east on State Route 290, to the HinkeySummit Road.

Jarbidge River – Located 103 miles north of Elko off Hwy.225 on the Charleston/Jarbidge Road. Pan-sized trout canbe caught in abundance.

Salmon Falls Creek - Located just two miles southwest ofJackpot, Salmon Falls offers kayaking and canoeing in addi-tion to fishing. There is a boat launch on-site.

South Fork of the Humboldt River - Habitat for plenty oftrophy trout. The limit is one, and only artificial lures with asingle barbless hook may be used. Below South ForkReservoir, both trout and bass may be caught.

Lamoille Canyon - Lamoille Creek winds throughout thisscenic glaciated canyon and includes several beaver pondsand open, winding stretches of water. Fly fishing for trout isavailable.

Owyhee River - Just below Wild Horse Reservoir, it is pos-

sible to catch large trout in the Owyhee. Bruneau River - This remote area, 75

miles from Elko, boasts of plenty of fastfishing for rainbow trout.

Tabor Creek - This small stream, 30miles north of Wells, offers both rainbowand brook trout in abundance.

ICE FISHING Wilson Reservoir - Great trout fishing, 90

miles from Elko. The improved gravel roadmay be closed by weather, so call ahead.

South Fork State Recreation Area - This1,650 acre reservoir is accessible by pavedroad and freezes late in the season. Largetrout provide fast action.

Wildhorse State Recreation Area - Verypopular ice fishing spot featuring trout andyellow perch in abundance.

SNOWMOBILING Lamoille Canyon - Gorgeous scenery

throughout this rugged glaciated canyon.Paved road winds to unloading spot at snowline. Scattered wilderness areas wheresnowmobiling is prohibited.

Adobe Summit, Swales Mountain, LoneMountain - Vast, open meadows across thisForest Service land make for great snowmo-biling. Truck/trailer pull-outs and parkingavailable at the top of Adobe Summit.

Jack Creek & Independence Mountains -Discover this mountainous ranching countrywith the Independence Range on your rightand the Tuscaroras to the left.

North Fork, Charleston and Jarbidge - Upto thirty feet of snow can fall in this ruggedwinter wilderness, 55 miles north ofElko.Snowmobiling is prohibited in designat-ed wilderness areas.

Wildhorse Reservoir, Gold Creek andMerrit Mountain - Miles of open snowmobil-ing is available in this area north of Elko.

Jarbidge - Follow the Expert Trail fromWildhorse Reservoir to Jarbidge. If unfamil-iar with the terrain, a guide from Elko is sug-gested. Rated as one of the top 10 snow-mobiling areas in the world.

Santa Rosa Mountains - Snowmobilingfun 55 miles north of Winnemucca. Travelnorth on Highway 95, and east on StateRoute 290 to Hinkey Summit.

ALPINE SKIING/SNOWBOARDINGSnoBowl Ski Area - Northern Nevada's

only ski area, just five miles from Elko, with100 acres of open bowl skiing.

Ruby Mountain Heli-Skiing - The ultimatein alpine skiing. You'll be flown by helicopter

HUNTING Most areas in northeastern Nevada

There is no shortage of theories thatseek to explain the origins of the Basques,western Europe’s mystery people. Theyrange from the incredulous (that Basquesare the survivors of the lost people ofAtlantis, the fabled land that sank into thesea) the mythical (that Basques aredescendants of the mythical Aitor, the first

Basque man) tothe probable(Basques originsare in thePyrenees moun-tain rangebetween Spainand France. Theycall themselvesEuskaldunak.)

Always anadventurous peo-ple, they wereseafaring as earlyas the Middle

Ages, many Basques crossed the Atlantic toAmerica early in this century to herd sheep,an activity that brought them to northernNevada, where many stayed on, offeringtheir culture, and their cuisine, to the fron-tier.

The most visible signs of the Basqueinfluence are the family-style dining housesthat proliferate across Cowboy Country, par-ticularly in Winnemucca and Elko. Expertlyprepared seafood, steaks, and, of courselamb, are always on the menu, and thefood is served in hearty portions in anatmosphere that is always festive.

Winnemucca and Elko also play host toannual summertime Basque festivals,where the music, dancing and colorful cos-tumes of the old country are on display.There, you may find yourself dancing a spir-ited “jota”, or letting loose with an “irrintzi”,a staccato cross between a whoop and acry that is the ancient call of the Basquecountry.

No trip to Cowboy Country is completewithout sampling the genuine hospitality of

the Basque. “Eskerrik Asko”! Tradition is very important to the

Basques. They came very close to losingtheir heritage when Gen. Francisco Franco,the fascist dictator who ruled Spain from1930 to 1975, launched his own privatewar on the Basques, forbidding them tospeak their native language or practicetheir traditions. Franco did not succeed,and today, the Basques are determined topass those traditions down to their chil-dren. It was during Franco’s reign that agood number of Basques immigrated toAmerica,where theycould be freeto speak theirlanguage andcarry on theirtraditions suchas authenticdancing,weight lifting,handball,wood chop-ping and the“irrintizi”(Basque warcry).

TUSCARORAThis historic mining town once rivaled

modern-day Elko. In 1878, Tuscarora peakedat 30,000 population. Today there are a hand-ful of residents, including renowned potterDennis Parks who operates the famousTuscarora Pottery School. The building whereParks’ shop resides is characteristic of thejumbled history of a Nevada boomtown. Builtas the Gold Hill Hotel in 1859, the structurewas moved to Cornucopia in 1860 and thenback to Tuscarora where it was Mrs. Sweifel’sBoarding House, the Woods family residence,the post office, a telephone switchboard sta-tion and the Justice Court building. The Parksbought the house in 1972. A sign that reads“No Beds Secured Until Paid for” still hangsthere. Tuscarora’s cemetery is one of the mostpicturesque around. Other points of interestinclude the town’s remaining historic build-ings, a small museum and the pottery schooland gallery. From Elko, take the Mountain CityHighway (State Route 225) north to theTuscarora Highway (Hwy. 226) intersection. Agravel road leads to Tuscarora.

Hardesty sold his U7 ranch northwest of Wellsthe so-called Pacific Reclamation Companybought land and in 1911 advertised what theypromised would be a planned community of7,500. A four-block business district with con-crete sidewalks and street lights sprang upand the railroad laid track to the boomingtown. The grandest three-story hotel betweenReno and Salt Lake opened, followed by thebrick high school. Pacific Reclamation profit-ed by selling land but water rights were notsecured so Metropolis withered. Today sage-brush stands higher than most of the ruins,exceptions being what remains of the highschool, the hotel, and a monument to markthe passing of hard-working pioneers doomedto see their dreams evaporate into the highdesert air.

Directions to Metropolis:In Wells, NV, from 6th Street go north on

Lake Avenue and cross tracks to 8th Street,then turn left on 8th Street and continue fol-lowing road through 90 degree turn north overHumboldt River (only a trickle at this point)and after another 8.5 miles follow roadthrough 90 degree turn west, then after atotal of 12.4 miles, cross the cattle guard,take first left, and drive 1.5 miles.

MIDASIn 1907, more than 2,000 prospectors

flooded the Midas area after hearing reportsof gold strikes. When the ore turned out to below grade in terms of quality and quantity, allbut 250 people moved on. A cyanide millcaused another boom in 1915 which lastedseven years until the mill burned down.Sporadic mining continued until 1942. Today,a handful of buildings stubbornly remain,including a saloon and cafe which is open tothe public. It’s said that the town’s original set-tlers wanted to name the place Gold Circle.When they were rebuffed by postal authoritieswho said Nevada already had enough townswith “gold” in their names, the town wasnamed Midas. Take the Golconda exit fromInterstate 80 and travel northeast on OldHighway 40, turn left on State Route 18 andfollow the signs.

SULPHURA Paiute discovered this site in 1869. He

led prospectors to the find, expecting a bron-co, saddle and blankets in return; he neverreceived them. By 1880, six tons of sulphur aday were mined here. In 1909, the WesternPacific Railway laid tracks through the areaand named the station Sulphur. It was a majorreceiving and shipping point in the early1920’s. The automobile was Sulphur’s majordownfall since cars turned business awayfrom the town. Sulphur is located 58 mileswest of Winnemucca. Take the Jungo Roadturnoff from U.S. Highway 95 and follow thesigns.

ROCHESTERProspectors from Rochester, New York,

started mining what would later become thetown of Rochester in the 1860’s. However, nomajor finds were uncovered until 1912. Oneyear later, 2,300 people lived in the town.There were two newspapers, several hotels,saloons, dance halls and other buildings. TheCoeur Rochester Mine, which still mines thesame ore through old mining shafts, sits on amountain overlooking the old RochesterMining District. Some old town sites havebeen left.

BLACKJACK (21)Blackjack is the prototypical Nevada

table game. Your goal is to come up with acard combination which equals 21, withoutgoing over (“busting”). Following your ante(initial bet), the dealer gives each player twocards and deals two to herself. If she pullsan ace and a face card - 21, with the acecounting as eleven and the face card 10 -the game is over. If she has anything else,play goes around the table, and you areallowed to draw as many cards as you want(“hit”) until you’re as close to 21 as you dareto get. If you go over 21, surrender yourcards and wait for the next round. If youshould de dealt a 21 in your first two cards,show them to the dealer: you’re a winner!After all players have been dealt their cards,the dealer reveals her hand, and anyonecloser to 21 than she is declared a winner. Ifyou tie (“push”), you keep your bet. Acescount as eleven or one (the player decideswhich), face cards are always 10, and allother cards play at their face value.

POKERWhether it’s played live or machine-gen-
