Public Masses and devotions have been suspended until further notice, and church buildings are required to be locked. Priests will still be offering private Masses (to which the public are not invited) for the previously assigned Mass intentions and for the salvation of the world. You can join yourself to the Mass from home by using the “Pray At Home” resources.

Current directives for sacraments, based on the current health protocols, are as follows: Drive up confessions will be held in the lower parking lot at Saint Malachy every Saturday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Funeral and wedding liturgies may be held in exceptional circumstances with less than 10 people present. All other sacraments are to be delayed except for those in danger of death.

The parish live streams Mass every Sunday at 10:00 AM. Visit archangelgabrielparish.org and click the live stream link or visit our Facebook page: facebook.com/archangelgabrielparish/live. You do NOT need a Facebook account to view the live streams.

Please help ministry going by giving online: archangelgabrielparish.org/onlinegiving or by mailing your envelope to Archangel Gabriel Parish; 5718 Steubenville Pike, McKees Rocks, PA 15136.

We have set up a 24-hour drive-up Perpetual Adoration Chapel at Saint Malachy Church (343 Forest Grove Road, Coraopolis, PA 15108). You can Adore Jesus in the Most Holy Eucharist at any time from your car. Volunteers are needed to spend a hour with the Lord. To signup, please go to tinyurl.com/adorationAGP.

All parish and ministry meetings are cancelled unless they are addressing urgent pastoral need (e.g. delivering food to the hungry) or are related to the COVID-19 response.

All in person Faith Formation and Youth Ministry sessions are cancelled until further notice. We are attempting to provide families the tools and coaching they need to do faith formation from home.

Volunteers are needed to make phone calls and deliver groceries. To sign up, go to archangelgabrielparish.org/phone and/or to help deliver groceries and/or medicine sign up at archangelgabrielparish.org/grocery.

Archangel Gabriel Parish wants to help any vulnerable person who needs groceries and/or medicine delivered to their home. A person can call the COVID-19 Assistance Hotline at 412-787-2140 xl03 or can submit their name and contact information at archangelgabrielparish.org/help.

The Pizza Kitchen is closed.

The parish cycling group (Gabe’s Riders) has cancelled all training rides for May. For more information go to archangelgabrielparish.org/gabesriders.

All offices can be reached via telephone, 412-787-2140 or email at [email protected].

At Archangel Gabriel Parish we’ve been able to hear confessions in the lower parking lot at St. Malachy. Tim Davis and several volunteers erected tents in which to place the priest, to safeguard against rain and to protect the anonymity of the penitents.

For the first weeks, the weather was sunny and comfortable. The white sheeting billowed and snapped in the breeze like the canvas sails of a boat, and the sunlight gleamed through the sheeting as if it were glinting off the surface of waves. For me, it was cheerily rejuvenating, reminiscent of the year when as a Boy Scout I learned how to sail small crafts.

But May 9, it was barely above freezing, snowflakes tumbled, and the wind bit hard. Poor Fr. Iggy, pictured on his way into the confessional, thinks 65° is bitter cold, and he suffered through his 90-minute turn. But Tim and the men managing traffic and tents had it worse as they labored to anchor the tents in the unexpectedly strong wind. Again, like sailing: Fun when the weather’s nice, but hard and scary work when it’s not.

Metaphorically speaking, the weather’s not good for the Church of Pittsburgh right now. We face the consequences of rust-belt population losses from decades past as we rapidly shed parishes, churches, and schools, along with their conveniences. The Church strains to aid survivors of abuse also from decades past, as we all ponder the related scandals. And now we must find ways to worship and serve in a pandemic.

Many are tempted to abandon ship: Every week I hear of someone leaving the Church. Others throw their shipmates overboard with resentful outrage, whiny complaining, insidious gossip. Still others grow discouraged, and do little more than crouch near the bilge, minimizing their own risk.

But if you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you haven’t yet fallen away. Thank you for your courage and help—whether by adjusting the sails for a new course or simply by bailing water. Sailing in bad weather takes strength and endurance, a willingness to do one’s part, and a willingness to trust others to do theirs. Storms will come and go, but Jesus is still with us here in the boat.

Faith Formation UpdateSteven Swank, Coordinator of Faith Formation, pro tem

The second grade students in Faith Formation are preparing for First Holy Communion, even though we don’t know when or how these celebrations will be rescheduled. Part of their preparation is using special Eucharist lessons from Saint Mary’s Press called “Go Seek Find.” These lessons were delivered to the homes of our second graders by some of our wonderful catechists! Special thanks to Suzanne Bentley, Bob Chamberlin, Maureen Connor, Dave Keene, Autum Kissinger, and Barb Sikora for helping to get these materials to the students!

Please keep all of our second graders in your prayers as they continue to prepare to receive Jesus for the first time in the Eucharist.

The Robinson Farmers Market at Holy Trinity opens on Monday, May 18th from 3-7pm! We’re working hard to make sure we are compliant with all guidelines set forth by the CDC, Allegheny County Health Department, and the Diocese in order to keep everyone healthy and safe.

Here’s what you need to know before opening day:- Vendors, volunteers, and guests will be required to wear a mask in order to enter the market- There will be “one-way” traffic throughout in order to limit exposure to others- No eating will be permitted on-site, but we will still have a few food vendors for you to take some prepared food home to enjoy!- The number of customers in the market will be limited to allow for social distancing and waiting lines will be located near the upper and lower parking lots.

For info, email [email protected].

PARISH UPDATES

Pastoral Care CornerFr. Sam Esposito (Senior Parochial Vicar)

Our outreach continues as we enter the “yellow zone” and navigate what that means, knowing that we must continue to use safety precautions that protect the vulnerable among us. A foundational aspect of our Catholic social teaching is that all life has value and this begins at conception. Our respect life apostolate reports below:

2,899 people died in the United States yesterday......from abortion. From 2010 -2019 at least 2,096 babies have been rescued from abortion through the ministry of Choices.

The Archangel Gabriel Respect Life Team bundled up and joined the virtual walk to benefit Choices Pregnancy Center, located in Coraopolis. Thanks to all of you who supported Choices in this major fundraiser for their ministry. Our team raised a total $5375 – a new record for our parish! Choices Pregnancy has reached 89% of their goal of $65,000 having raised $57,768. They will keep this page open for contributions until the end of the month if you would like to support them - go to tinyurl.com/AGPchoiceswalk (Our team is listed on the bottom of the webpage if you would like to contribute through the Archangel Gabriel Team).

Please continue to pray for an end to abortion and for those who work or enter in the Choices Pregnancy Ministry and others like it. May the angels intercede for them where needed!

Seminarian UpdateJacob Gruber, Seminarian

What do we make of this time with limited access to the sacraments? Even while we can’t receive all the sacraments, I suggest that this time can still be sacramental. In our Faith, the sacraments are places where human realities take on a whole new dimension. Water, which washed the body, now washes the soul. Oil, which made the body shine, now makes the soul glisten. Bread and wine, which nourished the body, now nourishes the soul. And words now have the power to transform the secular into the sacred. This new law of the universe, that what is human can carry the divine and what is natural can carry the supernatural, is the essence of the sacraments.Well, Zoom and Facebook Live are human realities, too. They make us feel united together even when we are apart. And when the Church uses them, they become sacramental. A much deeper unity is happening in our Zooms and live streams than is happening for social groups or business executives. Our water washes, our food feeds, our words speak, and our live streams unify more deeply. No matter what the circumstances in the world are, we have the unity of the Spirit, the one membership in the one Body of Christ. For us, being on live stream or video chat is really a symbol of that much deeper unity we all have.

Do we believe this? Let’s put it into action some more, then. I want to heartily invite you all to join in the Solemn Evening Prayer streams we do on Sundays at 6pm from St. Mary, Help of Christians Church on Facebook Live (hopefully someday in person, too!). This prayer, one of the most powerful prayers in the entire tradition of the Church, is something we can all gather around and be transformed by. To learn more about how to watch it, and to see a video series I’m putting together called, “Rediscovering the Divine Office,” go to archangelgabrielparish.org/divineoffice.

ARCHANGEL GABRIEL PARISH PRAYER

O blessed Archangel Gabriel, you announced our salvation to the Virgin Mary. Pray for us that we may be courageous and compassionate, strong and faithful followers

of her Son, Jesus.

By your intercession, obtain for us the unification of our parish, and the fruitfulness of our mission to make disciples. Blessed be God in his angels and in his saints, through

Christ, our Lord.

Amen.
