December 2018 Jurassic Maths Hub Newsletter Covering Dorset, Devon, Somerset and Wiltshire I am delighted that the most recent addition to the range of Professional Development groups that we offer as the Jurassic Maths Hub now includes a group of special and mainstream schools working together to improve SEND provision in maths (see flyer on pages 4 / 5). This means we have 24 types of group in our region which breaks down into over 50 collaborative groups of teachers from over 150 schools. Participating in all groups is free and many groups have capacity for more teachers to get involved so do look at our website www. jurassicmaths.com and this brochure which contains most opportunities https://www.woodroffe.dor - set.sch.uk/Maths_Hub/Work - Groups1819/index.html. The new year looks set to be busy as many groups start to meet, but also we host two Shanghai Exchanges. There are two open session so please see the poster on the following page and follow the booking links. Simultaneously, Shiphay School in Torquay is hosting a Primary exchange so please see the separate poster on page 3 and booking links to join a primary open session. In January we will also begin recruiting lots of Primary Schools to join the Teaching for Mastery programme in September 2019 that will then be in its fourth year. Each year we grow the number of local specialists to run the Teacher Research Groups which consist typically of six par - ticipating schools. Do look at the flyer on page six and complete our basic expression of interest link if you wish to participate. We will also be recruiting for the Secondary programme (in due course) and a new video has been produced showing the benefits of this. This programme involves special and mainstream schools working together to improve SEND provision in maths. Nationally, each Work Group will be formed from at least one special school working with a small group of mainstream schools, either primary, secondary or both, and will focus on a content area or theme that is relevant to all students. The pedagogy introduced, and any resources trialled, will be viewed in light of how they support the principles of teaching for mastery

Locally, the Jurassic Maths Hub will draw together teachers who are interested in developing their skills and the provision of maths education for SEND pupils. The development of a network is the priority for 2018/19. A focus for the network this year will be how in mathematics we assess and identify progression steps for pupils moving on from Early Learning Goals.

Who is this for?All teachers of mathematics at primary, secondary and special schools. Ideally teachers should have at least two years’ experience in the classroom and may be the lead in mathematics in their setting. This Work Group would also be suitable for a SENCo in mainstream schools with a strong background in mathematics.

What is involved?• A series of collaborative workshops which will initially focus on exploring methods of assessment, moderation and progression for students of any age who are moving on from Early Learning Goals• School-based work to trial approaches discussed at face-to-face meetings.• Online discussion as part of a professional community

Teachers will improve their understanding of the different areas within SEND and the pedagogy that is associated with working with these students. The focus for the sessions this year will be on how we assess, moderate and provide progression for those who are working significantly below age related expectation and reaching or have reached the Early Learning Goals.

Classroom practice develops through a series of gap tasks where teachers try out activities to promote depth of understanding; consequently, pupils will develop a deeper understanding of the mathematical ideas and be more confident in their mathematics.

The wider contextCollectively, the network of Maths Hubs across England work on projects around national maths education priority areas. One of those priorities requires Maths Hubs to work in the area of subject knowledge enhancement for all teachers of mathematics, which, of course, includes those teachers working with pupils with SEND. Each Maths Hub participating in a national project runs a local Work Group, where teachers come together over a period of time to work on areas defined by the project. All Work Groups are subject to a common evaluation process, which collectively provides a body of evidence on the project’s outcomes. So, your participation in this Work Group will contribute to your ownprofessional leaning, and that of your school colleagues, as well as contributing to the improvement of maths education at a national level.

Expectations of participants and their schoolsParticipants should be working with pupils with SEND either in a mainstream school or specialist provision. They must be able and willing to commit to participate fully in all elements of the programme:

Workshops will be held at Southbrook School, Exeter, EX2 6JB on

• Wednesday 23rd January 13:30 – 15:30 • Wednesday 20th March 13:30 – 16:30 • Wednesday 1st May 13:30 – 16:30

It is also possible that the work group lead can provide outreach support to members of the group who feel this would be of benefit. The participant’s school must have the capacity and commitment to support them throughout the programme.

FundingThere is no charge for teachers and schools to take part in this Work Group. All costs are met by Maths Hub funds. Cover and travel expenses will need to be funded by each school as necessary.

Who is leading the Work Group?Kathryn Wharton-Darke is the lead for the work group. She is Head of Maths at Southbrook School, which is an 11–16, SEND provision based in Exeter. Before moving to Southbrook, she was a teacher of maths at Uffculme School and has a broad range of experience in teaching maths to students with SEND in both mainstream and specialist environments.

As part of the hub’s work supporting local leaders of maths education, the first South West Mathematics PD providers conference was held in September, hosted jointly by Jurassic and CODE hubs. The day was attended by mathematics advisers and consultants, NCETM accredited PD leads, mathematics SLEs, teaching for mastery specialists and maths hub work group leads. John Mason, Anne Watson, Laurie Jacques and Tom Francombe all contributed to what was a fantastic day of thinking and challenge around the theme of variation.

The second PD Providers Conference is planned for September 2019; if you are interesting in attending as a local leaders of mathematics then please complete an online expression of interest form:

An article about the research, titled ‘Changing lives and providing equity through pre-teaching and assigning competence’ has also been published by ATM in Mathematics Teaching 262 :https://www.atm.org.uk/mathematics-teach-ing-journal-archive/143143. The final report from the project can also be accessed at:https://www.babcockldp.co.uk/maths

The British Congress of Mathematics Education (BCME) held its ninth conference at Easter and Dr Ruth Trundley (Babcock LDP) presented a session on the research carried out by a work group that was joint funded by Jurassic Maths Hub, CODE Maths Hub and Devon LA. This work group looked at ‘Supporting children to be active and influential participants in mathematics lessons through effective use of assigning competence and pre-teaching.’ A formal peer-reviewed proceedings paper on the research has now been published available on the BSRLM website http://www.bsrlm.org.uk/bcme-9/.
