THE USDA NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION DISTRICT IS PROVIDING FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR MICHIGAN FARMS TO PLANT COVER CROPS AT $37.66/ACRE. NEED MORE FORAGE? Try alternative forages for grazing, haying or ensiling. Summer annuals can produce high volumes of biomass, and some forages can extend grazing seasons well into the winter. ATTENTION PRODUCERS: To be considered for NRCS assistance, producers must apply through their local NRCS office by JULY 8, 2019. Producers may receive a waiver to plant cover crops before funding is approved. The waiver does not guarantee funding will be approved; farmers plant at their own risk. Producers planting a summer cover crop have a variety of options based on preferences and seed availability. Due to anticipated livestock feed shortage, NRCS is authorizing cover crop options including forage crops such as corn for silage. Summer cover crops will improve water quality by controlling erosion & benefit 2020 crops by reducing soil compaction, controlling weeds, and retaining soil nutrients. Producers considering cover crops should check with crop insurance agent, USDA Risk Management Agency and Farm Service Agency regarding restrictions for haying, grazing and harvesting cover crops on prevented planting fields.
