Cover Story 39 The redshirt season is a tool used in collegiate athletics for a variety of reasons, but ultimately it presents a student-athlete with a unique opportu- nity to learn. Whether it’s getting bet- ter acclimated to the college game, learning his position, or improving his conditioning, every redshirt freshman should use that first year to absorb as much information as he possibly can. Javon Baumann and Kyle Molock did just that. Baumann is a hulking presence, a 6-foot-8 250-pound bruiser with wild hair and an unrelenting desire to bang under the boards with some of the best the Atlantic 10 has to offer. Bau- mann most recently averaged 4.7 points and 3.8 rebounds while shoot- ing 62.7 percent from the field in 19 games for the Licher Baeren team in Germany’s Pro-B league. Born and raised in Germany, where basketball plays second fiddle to soccer and other sports, Baumann was always a fan of the game, and models his style of play after some of the players he grew up watching. “I’m going to run as fast as I can, post up hard, and get rebounds,” he said. His favorite players growing up were Dennis Rodman and Charles Barkley, and he has put a real em- phasis on being active and aggressive on both sides of the ball, just like his idols. When he hits the floor, Hawk fans are in for a real treat. Baumann has many tools that were refined during his redshirt year and he credits his coaches and team- mates for instilling in him the compet- itive fire that he hopes to bring with him every time he steps out onto the court. Javon Baumann, a native of Germany, joined the Saint Joseph’s program in 2012 before redshirting the season. His physi- cal presence in the paint will add valuable forward depth to the Hawk lineup.

Whether it’s getting bet-ter acclimated to the college game, learning his position, or improving hisconditioning, every redshirt freshmanshould use that first year to absorb asmuch information as he possibly can.

Javon Baumann and Kyle Molockdid just that.

“I really tried to improve, and lastyear I had the chance to play againstC.J. [Aiken], Halil [Kanacevic], andRonald [Roberts],” Baumann said. “Itwas really good competition and itmade me better. I’m just trying to getbetter in the post.”

With the departure of Aiken, theteam will rely on Baumann’s size andenergy on both ends of the court. Infact, the most important piece of ad-vice he received during his redshirtyear concerned that very thing.

“Be aggressive,” he was told. “Ijust want to do my best and leaveeverything on the court.”

Off the court, Baumann is an avidchef, a skill he’s shared with his fam-ily for years.

“I used to bake with my grandmaa lot. I really like to cook,” he said. “Myfavorite dish to cook is probably pasta,it’s fast.” His love of food was also afactor in his decision to come to SaintJoseph’s. He was very interested inthe school’s food marketing program,of which he is now a student.

Kyle Molock had a much differentexperience during his redshirt season.

The 6-foot-2 point guard fromDublin, Ohio, had recovered from atorn left ACL in 2010 and was averag-ing 19 points per game through eightgames as a senior at Dublin CoffmanHigh before tearing his right ACL inJanuary of 2012. After re-tearing hisACL during summer workouts, Molockdedicated last year to getting healthyand preparing himself for this season, which he understandably was anxiousto get underway.

“I’m very excited,” Molock said.“Being in front of the fans and in thatatmosphere is something I haven’t ex-perienced in a while. I’m definitelyready to get back to that.”

Along with the constant rehab onhis knee, Molock took advantage of allthe learning opportunities he was pre-sented last year.

“When certain situations wouldarise in practice or a game, [the coach-ing staff] would say ‘are you paying at-tention? You’re going to be expectedto do this next year,’” Molock said.

According to Molock, his knee isgood to go, even though he was heldout of exhibition games in Europe overthe summer for precautionary reasons.

“I’ve been playing in every prac-tice and in our scrimmage. There’s noreason why I shouldn’t be able to playright away,” Molock said.

“Last year, the only thing I focusedon was rehabbing and getting readyfor this year,” he said. “As a redshirt,I was able to travel with the team andexperience the road atmosphere. I

used last year as a learning process. Iwon’t have to go through that fresh-man curve this year.”

ACL injuries are prevalent in allsports, but more and more athletesare coming back sooner and stronger.Molock uses Minnesota Vikings run-ning back Adrian Peterson as his in-spiration.

“He was better than before,”Molock joked, citing Peterson’s MVPseason immediately following his re-turn from injury.

Molock has dealt with multiple in-juries to both of his knees already, butit’s not something he dwells on. He isfocused on this season and the past isjust that, the past.

“I’ve been injured and gonethrough some stuff, but what basket-ball player hasn’t?” he said. “Anybodycan get hurt at any given moment onthe court. Although I’ve had the sur-gery and done the proper rehab, mychances are the same as anyone else. All I can control is going out there andplaying as hard as I can.”

All his hard work paid off on No-vember 13 when he made his collegiatedebut, playing five minutes in theHawks’ win over Marist at Hagan Arena.

Kyle Molock spent his redshirt season re-habbing from a torn ACL. He looks to Min-nesota Vikings star Adrian Peterson, whowas voted the NFL’s MVP a year after ACLsurgery, for inspiration.

Molock grew up in Delaware be-fore moving to Ohio, so he had knowl-edge of Saint Joseph’s style of playand head coach Phil Martelli, due inlarge part to the team’s historic 2003-04 season. Not only was he familiarwith the school and its system, but healso found out he shared a lot of thesame ideas with Martelli when theytalked during the recruiting process.

Baumann has played in both of SJU’sgames this season, at Vermont and athome against Hagan Arena. His size andenergy will provide the Hawks with a sparkoff the bench.

“When he recruited me, everythingmatched with what I was looking for,”Molock said. “The style of play, whathe expects of me…it was a perfect fitall around.”

There has been much talk thisseason about Saint Joseph’s playingat a faster pace and making a con-certed effort to push the ball up thecourt, something that brought a smileto both Kyle Molock and Javon Bau-mann’s faces.

“I’m a pretty athletic kid. I like topush the ball in transition,” Molocksaid. “As long as we’re forcing the ac-tion, only good things can happen.”

With the additions of Molock andBaumann to the team’s already potentnucleus, the Hawks are looking tomake a lot of noise in the Atlantic 10this season.
