2013 brings with it the Art Gallery Society of nSW’s 60th anniversary, a landmark in Sydney’s cultural history. And Resonate, the Society’s unique blend of art and music celebrates thirteen years of bringing fine music into the Gallery.

in the ‘Gallery cabaret’ format cabaret diva christa hughes will entrance and delight; former dean of the Sydney conservatorium, kim Walker teams up with the Acacia Quartet; up and coming young pianist daniel de Borah will give a solo recital of piano greats and the Sydney omega ensemble returns with one of Australia’s greatest operatic voices in emma matthews performing Schubert’s transporting work The Shepherd on the Rock, plus much much more.

A special concert to celebrate the music of the italian baroque. music director and harpsichordist erin helyard, and some of the finest musicians from Pinchgut opera, will perform works by cavalli, Bononcini, merula and more. Whether you’re a first-timer, or part of the Pinchgut family, this concert will delight. Pinchgut is one of the gems of the Australian arts scene, as they focus on presenting innovative and rare works of the highest quality.

Australian pianist daniel de Borah was a major prize winner at the 2004 Sydney international Piano competition and has since gone on to perform as a soloist with the english chamber orchestra, the london mozart Players and the royal Philharmonic orchestra. dividing his time between Australia and the Uk, Resonate is delighted to have daniel perform at the Gallery, showcasing works by three great composers for the piano Prokofiev, Brahms and Schumann. A concert for all lovers of the piano.

internationally renowned bassoon player and former dean of the Sydney conservatorium of music, kim Walker, is joined by the fabulous Acacia Quartet in a beautiful program of works by Bach, handel, elena kats-chernin and Vivaldi. the Acacia Quartet features lisa Stewart and myee clohessy on violin, Stefan duwe on viola and Anna martin-Scrase on cello. the quartet was invited by the illustrious Australian composer elena kats-chernin to record her complete works for string quartet in 2012, and their musical virtuosity will dazzle you at their Resonate debut.

Back by popular demand following his brilliant 2011 Autumn Leaves program for the Gallery cabaret, tim draxl will once again entertain and enthrall you with his flair and smooth vocal style. An award winning actor, dancer and singer, tim will present an eclectic mix of songs from different eras and genres, film, theatre and the age of vinyl, all with a smooth jazz feel. With bass player dave ellis and michael tyack on piano, songs include Norwegian Wood, How High the Moon, Day and Night and How deep is the Ocean and many more favourites in a night of musical panache.

the river rhine has ignited the imagination of German poets and composers with traditions deeply rooted in legend and fantasy and became the ultimate landscape for Wagner’s epic ring cycle. to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of richard Wagner, mezzo-soprano Sally-Anne russell and pianist Andrea katz, present a concert celebrating the great river rhine, with songs by mahler, liszt, Schumann, Brahms, and culminating in Wagner’s great song cycle Wesendonck Lieder, of whom Wagner said “i have done nothing better than these songs.”

emma matthews is a highly acclaimed and awarded coloratura soprano equally at home with opera, recital and concert repertoire, and performs regularly with Australia’s leading opera companies, orchestras and festivals. this performance sees the Sydney omega ensemble return for their eighth appearance on the resonate stage. the concert will be a rare opportunity to hear emma matthews in a chamber music recital performing Schubert’s beautiful The Shepherd on the Rock. this is a concert not to miss!
