    making business better

We are nearing the first birthday of Resolve - a short journey by any measure. However, it has been and continues to be eventful:

    • We have settled into our new home in Samrand.• We will pass the 1,200 employee mark before June 2014.• Our recent wins are substantial and the opportunities we

have wanted and prepared for are establishing Resolve as one of the big dogs… Let us keep our eyes on the prize!

    • There is great interest and excitement from the market. We will continue to amaze the market (and ourselves) if we stay true to our purpose: to make business better.

There is a section on who Resolve is as a brand in this edition. Our key objective is to establish Resolve as a trusted brand. A unified brand with its own identity is a key part of how we are perceived by the market, and how we must approach engagement and delivery. In branding terms, perception is reality. Your most powerful contribution to the brand therefore must be to reinforce this doctrine on a daily basis: ‘Consider it done’.

We need to stay humble and acknowledge that we face great challenges if we want to achieve our ambitious growth aspirations:

    • We are exiting a stage where considerable amounts of energy were spent on internal matters, i.e. consolidation, office move and structures. I want to thank everyone for their hard work; those who assisted with the move and those who held the fort.

    • Our different business units, offerings and people in those teams are very diverse. We have resolved to manage that complexity through a type of federal system, where the different units align to the objectives of the ‘state’.

    • The Support Services team recently launched the brand new Employee Value Proposition (EVP). This type of initiative is heavily dependent on the principle: ‘it takes two to tango’. We can provide the chips, lights and music - but you guys need to dance and have fun to make this a ‘party’!

    • Some say our growth aspirations are unnerving, but we like a good challenge to get us out of bed. Join us for the next chapter of this story.

    • I am passionate about the ‘Gees’ (spirit) of our business. This is very important because we spend so much time at work.

During the months of April and May, we were fortunate to have a few long weekends and public holidays. I sincerely hope that you forgot about Nkandla, e-Tolls and Oscar, and that you used the time on your personal wellbeing, whether it was on a mountain bike, next to a fire with your loved ones, or curled up with a book.

Always keep the I-Pledge in mind when you are on the road.

Let us be serious about the business of making business better, but let us not take ourselves too seriously. Have a laugh and a proper dose of fun along the way!

    Goodpeople

    Who we are

Resolve is a fusion of intellectual capital, expertise, talent, and a work ethic driven by an action oriented passion for excellence. We are organised into four interlinked areas - strategy advisory; technology solutions; people enablement and process outsourcing - but throughout our business we foster the same entrepreneurial spirit that made our constituent former companies successful. We now work collectively to the advantage and benefit of the Resolvestakeholders, staff and our clients.

    Who we target

As Resolve, we are able to target a diverse range of local and global clients who operate in various industries, namely Transport & Infrastructure, Consumer products, Healthcare, Mining, Finance, Government and the NGO sector.

    What we do

Resolve combines specialised expertise with proven experience and enablers to provide services and technology solutions that are value centric; complementing client strategies and driving operations.

    How we operate

Resolve is more than just a name; it is a reflection of the way in which we approach business - we find practical and innovative solutions to business challenges, plan the most appropriate course of action with full accountability and have a determination that drives us to surpass our competitors. Our aim is to make business better by focusing on creating and supporting a customer centric culture.

What does Resolve mean to you?

With the amount of advertising and media ‘noise’ aroundthese days, it is impossible to avoid having a relationshipwith various brands. What most people do not see is that thebrands you love have worked hard to gain your attentionand affection. Brands have personalities and the connection one has with a brand can be regarded as a type of relationship. But great relationships are based on satisfying needs. Thereality is that when needs are no longer met, and when promisesare broken, the relationship struggles and eventually dies.

At Resolve we have a great opportunity to grow an enduring, exciting and innovative brand that will resonate with our clients, every day. Our brand has a personality because we give it life. Our passion, accountability to our colleagues and clients, and the way in which we deliver on our promises to meet our customers’ needs, make us unique. We make business better.

Our Corporate Social Investment (CSI) committee ran a successful campaign for Barking Mad from February to March where we accepted donations from a number of staff members during this period.

It was a great success and we will be running another one of this kind later on in the year. In addition, three lucky winners of our Valentine’s Day lucky draw donated their full winnings to Barking Mad. We want to thank Anthony Jacobs, Londiwe Kheswa and Lize Pienaar for donating their winnings.

In January we assisted Oliver’s House by donating furniture.Oliver’s house is a school for orphaned children and thoseliving with AIDS. They will receive further assistance from us inthe new financial year.

Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with communitiesin need through the provision of housing. We have supportedHabitat for Humanity by building four homes. The Resolve staffwill be doing maintenance work on one of the older homesin May.

Movember is a great way to spread awareness for prostate andtesticular cancer. The campaign runs annually in Novemberwhen Mo Bros and Mo Sistas unite to raise awareness andfunds. A number of Resolve employees were involved in thisinitiative, with Tanya Lumley bringing in the highest donation.Thank you, Tanya!

In March, Resolve also participated in the CANSA Shavathon and made a donation to CANSA. We also actively participate in Blood Drives which we host at the Resolve offices.

We also want to make staff aware of our HERO project. This entails an amount being agreed on and deducted from the employee’s salary on a monthly basis via payroll, after which we pool the funds and donate them to a charity every three months.

The charities are chosen by the CSI committee. We are open to any suggestions from the staff regarding their favourite charities. Please email [email protected].

Our Employee Value Proposition (EVP) describes the features andbenefits of working for Resolve. Our EVP forms an integral part ofResolve’s brand essence.

Employees are relied upon to deliver on their skills, time, experience and loyalty, thereby adding value to the business in a meaningful way and growing our brand in the market. We are also heavily reliant on our employees’ valued feedback and ideas to improve the EVP to attract new hires. Resolve firmly believes that our greatest strength is our people.

While many organisations have an EVP, only one third globally have formalised theirs. Our EVP forum has representatives from all business units within the Resolve Group. We have had a number of brainstorming sessions regarding the EVP offering and we are looking closely at the expectations of our diverse workforce and potential gaps where we can enhance the Resolve benefits forour employees.

While we have put together a number of projects to improve our work life at Resolve, we recognise that this initiative is inspired, informed and directed by our staff. We therefore need your inputin ensuring that we can build and continually improve on our EVP offering. You will have opportunities to take part in climate surveys, opinion polls, and offer suggestions through your EVP representatives.

Keep an eye out for more information in the coming months.

    Fear Factor Friday

On Friday the 28th of February, Resolve started its inauguralFear Factor Challenge! Different departments entered teams offour to withstand stern tests of their… resolve!

First challenge: to down a dodgy cocktail of raw egg, cocoa, honeyand green food colouring. Other challenges involved slurping jellywith a straw to get to the ‘creepy’ spider at the bottom and digging in a black bag of ‘worms’ (spaghetti).

It was a gruelling battle which ended with the final four teammembers having to sit with their feet in a bucket of ice cold water. However, with the hot sun beating down that afternoon, thefinal four weren’t seeing this as much of a challenge! Fear Factororganisers decided to step it up a notch and poured all theleftovers from the previous challenges (yes, even the spaghetti)into the cold water.

Finally, the SA staple Fear Factor challenge, Mopani worms, were stirred in as the final test.

The finalists still hung on! So eventually, to save them from spending Friday night with their legs in a bucket of muck andworms, we challenged the final four diehards to a tie-breaker:whoever eats a Mopani worm from the dirty water, the fastest, would be declared the winner. Waldo Boshoff scooped up aworm and swallowed it in one swift motion. He didn’t even givethe others a chance to blink. Well done, Waldo! You were thefiercest of them all!

The Training and Instructional Design Academy of South Africa (TIDASA) is now known as Instructional Design and Training Services (IDTS). IDTS aims to further the education of those students who not only want to improve their skills, but also those who never had the chance to reach Matric. IDTS is passionate about enabling people and to go beyond their limitations.

Instructional Design and Training Services (IDTS) has partnered with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) to produce learner guides which serve as complete reference guides for college students in the Transport and Logistics field. This partnership is crucial as the aim is to address the critical need for training material in the Transport and Logistics field after 450 students registered at the beginning of 2012 at five different public national colleges. DHET approached IDTS about starting a partnership (since IMPERIAL is seen as a leader and expert in the field of Transport and Logistics) and they agreed to assist, despite the fact that these students had been without handbooks for half of the academic year. Subsequently, IDTS has authored three guides per year for the Level 3 and 4 qualifications for 2013 and 2014.

What drives this project is the passionate awareness towards socialresponsibility and the decision that was made to uplift and enableour youth by actively developing their essential skills.

The learner guides for 2014 are in their final stages before printing, and IDTS, through Resolve, recently provided training for the DHET lecturers which turned out to be very successful and insightful to all who took part. This is the third round of lecturer training so far and they now have a better understanding of how the vital learning tools that they have been equipped with in the areas of Freight Logistics, Transport Economics and Transport Operations will empower over 2,000 students at institutions all over the country. This will be fundamental in improving their education and consequently the skills needed for their jobs within the industry.

There have been several other training engagements that IDTShas been part of over the past year. These include training forthe IMPERIAL Learning Academy (supervisory skills in warehouseand transport supervision and business administration skills),IMPERIAL Retail Logistics, SARS, Ekurhuleni municipality(electronic National Traffic Information System (e-NaTIS)), andthe Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) (Prevention ofFraud and Corruption).
