ABSTRACT: Kajjali is prepared by triturating purified mercury (Shuddha Parad) and purified

sulphar (Shuddha Gandhak ) in various proportions ( Sam-gun, Dwi-gun, Chatur-gun etc.) This Kajjali is itself used as medicine and it also forms a raw material for various pharmaceutical preparations in Rasa-shastra. Kajjali when levigated with juices of specific herbs (Bhavna Sanskar) produces desired effects in specific disease. Many text books like Yog-Ratnakar and Rasatarangini provide positive evidences of use of such Sanskarit Kajjali. For example, Kajjali when levigated with Amalaki Swaras, can be used in Madatyay. In Vidradhi, Kajjali levigated with Varun Kwath and taken with Varun Kwath as Anupana is useful. This paper focuses on collection of such references through various Rasa-shastra texts.

Key Words: Kajjali, Vanaspati Swaras, Sanskar

INTRODUCTION Ayurveda– literally meaning science of longetivity – puts greater emphasis on prevention and cure of disease, by maintaining positive health through holistic approach. It mainly aims to improve health through use of all possible materials from three natural resources of– herbal, metal/mineral and animal origin. Subsequently, a branch dealing with use of medicines predominantly of metal/mineral origin, emerged by the name ‘Rasashastra’ (Rasa= Mercury, Shastra= Science). The use of Kajjali in medicine started in 8th Century AD during the period of Nagarjuna who was the pioneer of Rasashastra. However, the ingredients of Kajjali viz Parada and Gandhaka are therapeutically used since the period of Charaka Samhita and Sushruta samhita which are dated 7th -8th century B.C.[1],[2]. Kajjali is a prime ingredient of the majority of Rasaushadhies with Vanaspati Swaras Sanskar like Bhavana (triturating) and with Swaras as Anupana (a vehicle taken after medicine), Sahapan (taking together with medicine) & external application. In

such a way Vanaspati Swaras along with Kajjali acts as an effective medicine on various diseases. Such references of Vanaspati Swaras Sanskarit Kajjali are present in Rasa shastra text. So here collections of references of Vanaspati Swaras Sanskarit Kajjali in various diseases are studied. METHOD These being a literary review paper we have searched for various references in Rasa-shastra text .The references are categorized using following criteria.

1. References stating use of Sanskarit Kajjali itself as a medicine in various diseases.

2. References stating use of Sanskarit Kajjali as a raw material in herbo-mineral formulation.

3. References stating use of Sanskarit Kajjali for Aamayik Prayoga (Internal administration )

4. References stating use of Sanskarit Kajjali for external application.
