Black: The Cryptic Color Cameron Bailey Faculty Mentor: Andrea Varga THE 239: History of Fashion Fall 2014 The purpose of this research is to explore the usage of the color black as it pertains to fashion throughout the histories of Western cultures. The modern stigmas associated with black are death, wickedness, and depression, all of which having negative connotations. But this was not always the case. History has portrayed black as diabolical and mournful equally as much as a color of luxury, highfashion, and a hierarchal tool. Even in contemporary societal dress, black has become a symbol of personal expression, sometimes reaching obsessive heights. It is important to recognize that norms and ideals today, do not always coincide with those of the past. Black can be as intimidating as saddening, religious as much as secular, ornate or bleak. This research seeks to identify the effects of the mystical shade throughout history, and to unify the complex and mysterious elements of the color black.
