Now Vanessa Herron can add another title to KHU /LQNHG,Q SUR¿OH &RYHU JLUO The 38-year-old Newbury Park resident is gracing the June issue of Woman’s Day maga- zine, which hit newsstands and supermarket checkout lines last week. “I turned around in Albert- sons and I was like, ‘Oh my god, that’s me,’” Herron said. The reason for her newfound fame? She took the steps to change her health and her life, walking off 90 pounds. She started simply by walk- ing her youngest daughter, Brenda, to classes at Sequoia Middle School. The decision to get moving came after an upsetting doctor’s appointment in late 2013, when she learned she had high blood pressure and that her body mass index was in the obesity range. At the time she weighed 242 pounds. “I was driving my daughter to school (a mile away),” Herron said. “I thought maybe I should just try to walk her and see how that feels.” Several months later, and 12 pounds lighter, the weight loss stalled and her motivation waned. But after another doctor’s visit in February 2014, when a blood test revealed she was at an exceedingly high risk for cardio- vascular disease and on the verge of diabetes, Herron decided it was time to get serious. “My mom, she’s always looked young, she’s always looked beautiful . . . and she’s always been an example of how to take care of yourself,” Herron said. “I realized I wanted my kids to be as proud of me as I was of her when I was grow- ing up. “I want them to not worry about me.” Herron used an exercise app to keep motivated and ac- countable, joined a gym to take resistance training classes and changed her diet, eliminating “bad” carbs and processed food.
