Key considerations1. What do you want to accomplish with a

cover crop?ü Match choice of a cover crop with your specific

goal(s):ü Provide weed management benefitsü Reduce or prevent soil erosion, reduce compactionü Conserve or use excess soil moistureü Protect water qualityü Provide additional grazing resourceü Reduce fertilizer inputs (scavenge or fix N)ü Add organic matter to soilü Other …

Key considerations1. What do you want to accomplish with a

cover crop?ü Be aware of costs associated with cover crops:

ü Cost of seedü Availability of equipment to plant cover cropü One or more additional passes through the field for

planting, terminatingü Use of soil moistureü Becomes a volunteer weed, volunteer wheat, or

other pest problemsü Timing and ability to terminate (mowing, tilling,

rolling, spraying, etc).

Page 13: Cover Crops and their Impact on Weed Suppression · 2019-11-19 · ü Cover Crop Decision Tool, data for Kansas available now ü Integrating Cover Crops in Soybean Rotations publication

Key considerations2. How will you plant it, and when?

ü Consider your crop rotation sequence and where a cover crop can fitü Change the crop rotationü Change time of crop planting

ü Know when your key weed species germinates and emerges in the field

Page 28: Cover Crops and their Impact on Weed Suppression · 2019-11-19 · ü Cover Crop Decision Tool, data for Kansas available now ü Integrating Cover Crops in Soybean Rotations publication

Key considerations2. How will you plant it, and when?

ü Establish the cover crop prior to that key point in lifecycle of weed species for greatest weed suppression impact; Why?ü Reduce sunlight reaching soil surface; residue or

living mulch to smother and outcompete emerging weeds for light, water, and nutrients

ü Alter microenvironment (moisture, temperature) during weed seed germination

ü Release of chemicals from roots or decaying residue to inhibit weed seed germination (allelopathy)

ü Improve overall soil health; enhance crop vigor

Page 29: Cover Crops and their Impact on Weed Suppression · 2019-11-19 · ü Cover Crop Decision Tool, data for Kansas available now ü Integrating Cover Crops in Soybean Rotations publication

AllelopathyüMany plant species have allelopathic

characteristics, that is, can produce chemicals that affect other plant speciesüWeed suppression with cover crops?

üDue to a physical barrier of residue, or üDue to allelopathy

üDIBOA, allelochemical isolated from rye, suppresses growth of plants, insects, fungi.

30

Page 30: Cover Crops and their Impact on Weed Suppression · 2019-11-19 · ü Cover Crop Decision Tool, data for Kansas available now ü Integrating Cover Crops in Soybean Rotations publication

AllelopathyüCereal rye produces DIBOA:

üGlucose molecule attached to DIBOA provides stability, prevents toxicity in plant

üToxic DIBOA is released when mixing DIBOA-glucoside with glucosidase upon plant wounding.

üAs rye cover crops breakdown, toxic DIBOA or degradation products provide weed suppression (Yenish et al. 1995. Weed Sci 43:18-20)

üQuestion .. if rye can provide 4 weeks of weed suppression (no emergence), than allelopathycontributes more than persistence of rye residue….

31

Key considerations3. What will precede and what will follow the

cover crop in your rotation?üConsider carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of cover crops

üChanges rate of residue breakdown, release of nutrients for subsequent crop

üConsider preemergence herbicides applied in previous crop, persisting into late summer or fall, and impacting establishment of some cover crop species

Key considerations5. How will you terminate your cover crop?

ü Consider both the cover crop and potential

weed species present or will yet emerge

ü Some will freeze out

ü Some require specific timing and methods

ü Include a residual herbicide in termination /

burndown application mixture

ü Standard recommendation is at least 2 weeks

prior to planting summer row crop

ü Check with insurance providers, USDA-FSA, or

NRCS for local rules on termination timing
