Best summer ever!

DEAR CAMPER PARENTSCovenant Harbor provides life-changing camp experiences for children of all ages. We are committed to providing a fun week of activities in a safe place where our campers are not only taught the truths of the Bible, but how to live in a healthy environment while making new friends.

Each day brings a variety of age-appropriate opportunities for recreation. From cabin groups involved in an activity to the whole camp coming together for the “big games,” there is never a dull moment. During free time each afternoon campers may be able to choose from a variety of activities such as swimming, boating, archery, climbing wall, crafts, skate park, and other engaging activities.

From the high-energy worship times with singing, games, skits and a Bible lesson to the “talk-back times” for each cabin group following the worship times, campers are encouraged to ask questions and dialogue together to learn about the truths of Scripture and grow in their faith.

We prayerfully recruit over 70 college students and a few high school students, who all have leadership skills, to love and care for our campers. Coming from all over the country and having spent 10 days in extensive training before the arrival of your campers, they will welcome your campers with enthusiasm and serve them well while they are here.

Our entire staff looks forward to having your children here for Summer Camp 2015!

Parents often ask, “Why Summer Camp?” There are many Christian summer camps across the United States, and each camp provides children the opportunity to grow personally, spiritually, and physically. Covenant Harbor has compiled a list of the top five reasons summer camp can be great for your child’s development.

Jesus Camp allows children to experience Jesus outside the home and church, offering a special experience with our trained staff to see the love of Christ. Experiencing Jesus outside the home will really help the development of your child’s personal and spiritual beliefs. Counselors at Covenant Harbor are well trained to be vessels that show the love of Jesus.

No TechnologyChildren are always on their smartphones, tablets, and watching television. Camp allows children to develop face-to-face relationships with those around them, not leaning on the crutch of technology.

Life Skills Camp challenges children to develop

skills that will benefit them now and in the future. For example, at Covenant Harbor we specifically tailor our summer camps to teach children how to share, make new friends, and gain a better understanding of people from different social backgrounds.

Friendships Life would be pretty boring without friends, wouldn’t it? The combination of no distractions and the emphasis on relationships allows camp to be a great place for children to get to know new friends and strengthen relationships with current friends. Simple, isn’t it?

Conquer FearsCamp is a safe place, and encourages children to conquer fears they had before camp such as stage fright, heights, and making new friends. The end result is a more confident child and a child that is willing to confront the challenges life brings.

WHY SUMMER CAMP

Day Camps at Covenant Harbor offer many features of the traditional camp experiences in a shorter daily schedule. Day Camps are a great option for all families with campers just finishing Kindergarten (K) through 6th grade.

While they’re here, campers get the chance to make new friends, play games, eat lunch, learn about God, splash at the waterfront, and tackle new adventure challenges. Every week at Day Camp is a little different, so campers can enjoy multiple weeks available for their age group.

DAY CAMP

Page 6: Covenant Harbor Summer Camp 2015

This is a great opportunity for siblings, neighbors and friends to come together and/or to meet new friends while here. Campers will be teamed up with others in their age group and enjoy some options that best fit their developmental level. Other parts of the day will allow the large group to come together for sessions, big games, waterfront time, and so much more. Grades are based on the 2014-2015 school year.

A great introduction to the camp experience, the K-2 weeks are designed with this age group in mind. New this year, we will be celebrating “theme days.” Of course our K-2 Day Camps wouldn’t be complete without the opportunity to experience our waterfront, classic camp songs, large group sessions, messy games, adventure activities and more. This experience is great for campers just finishing 3rd through 6th grade. Many of the elements of the typical Day Camp experience are adjusted to provide this group with new opportunities. Campers get to visit the waterfront, brave the adventure course, and make more activity choices during their Free Time. Campers choose one skill to focus on during the week. Skill options are available on our website. Grades are based on the 2014-2015 school year.

CAMPER SAFETYCamp takes the responsibility of providing a safe environment for children seriously. Our priority is to provide quality summer staff who understand their role in creating that safe environment.

Hiring ProcessCamps should have a highly selective process for hiring summer staff. At Covenant Harbor, the process includes multiple interviews with our full time youth ministry team as well as references from people who know applicants at work, school, and church. Applicants then have their first interview, and those who are deemed qualified have a second interview while their references are contacted. This multi-faceted approach to screening applicants allows us to hire the best staff possible.

Staff TrainingOur counselors spend 10 days in training prior to the arrival of our campers. Training topics include team building, small group leadership, evangelism, age characteristics, camper safety, daily role expectations, cabin group dynamics, severe weather and emergency preparedness and more.

Specialization of StaffWhen camps hire non-counseling summer staff, it allows for specialization of summer positions. This staffing structure maximizes camper safety because counselors are

more available to supervise and spend time with children instead of needing to lifeguard at the waterfront or run other activities around camp. Covenant Harbor has a number of non-counseling positions to allow maximum position specialization.

Child ProtectionIt is essential for camps to be on the forefront of child protection policies and practices. At Covenant Harbor, all staff receive criminal background checks as a part of the rigorous hiring process. We also work with third parties (like Praesidium, Inc) to maintain screening, training and implementation of Child Protection strategies above industry standards.

Safety During CampDuring the camp week, staff run activities with camper safety as a essential part of each activity’s procedures. Rules for each activity area are clearly established and followed accordingly. Throughout the summer, activity procedures are checked on a regular basis to ensure safety policies are being carried out.

Covenant Harbor seeks to constantly improve our camper safety as one of our Core Values in all areas of camp so children are cared for physically, emotionally, and spiritually while still having a fun and life changing experience.

Kishwauketoe (or “Kish” for short) is for the campers in1st through 3rd grade that are looking for an overnight experience at Covenant Harbor.

Because of its unique location, intentionally smaller group size and age appropriate programming, Kish is a great way to introduce your 1st through 3rd grader to the camp experience. Kish houses up to 45 campers per week in authentic and inviting cabins. Kish is also home to our nature center, tree swing, and epic carpet ball tables.

Summer Camp is a place that is secluded and free from distractions for periods of time. At Covenant Harbor, our summer camp develops leaders through different opportunities and creates a space for children to thrive.

Summer CampersAt Summer Camp, children have many unique opportunities to grow as leaders. Dan Raymond, a fifth year staff member from Valley Covenant Church and previous camper at Covenant Harbor, recalls his leadership experience as a camper.

“As a camper I was really shy and quiet. As I came back year after year, I could see that I was developing leadership skills through my counselors and other staff telling me how much I’d grown and encouraging me to grow further in my time at camp. They helped bring out my leadership skills through different activities and obstacles at camp.”

Children attending camp have opportunities to display leadership through games, small group discussion and devotionals, being challenged on the high ropes course and many other activities at camp.

Summer StaffWhen choosing summer staff, our applicants go through an intensive screening and application process. This is to ensure camper safety, as well as to find the best group of coachable students.

Our staff goes through ten days of training where they live in close proximity together and partake in activities as a group.

During training, staff have a chance to lead small groups and to both write out and practice sharing their testimony. They are also involved in community groups to help each staff member debrief their experiences each week and grow closer to one another.

Molly Moore, a fourth year staff member from River Glen Presbyterian Church and long-time camper, describes how summer camp develops leaders over the years, “I started working at Covenant Harbor through the Alpha Camp and was even able to help out the Day Camp staff while I was here for Alpha Camp. I used to act by my emotions a lot and didn’t always think things through. In staff training, I learned to always take two deep breaths and then assess the situation logically, instead of letting my emotions determine my actions.”

Pier 30 is our largest program, hosting more than 200 campers each week. It follows a traditional camp format with plenty of Covenant Harbor twists. Along with time in the large group for exciting sessions, meals, and big games, all Pier 30 campers get a small cabin experience with a few other campers and one or two of our excellent counselors.

Pier 30 campers get plenty of free time throughout the week as well as the chance to participate in our exciting custom programming. Pier 30 serves three separate grade groups throughout the summer: 3rd-5th grades, 4th-5th grades and 6th-8th grades (grades are based on the 2014-2015 school year).

PROMOTES HEALTHy LIVINGCAMP

Here at Covenant Harbor, we take health very seriously and provide an environment conducive to a healthy lifestyle with many options to encourage children to make healthy decisions.

Physical Health:At each meal, children are offered a fresh array of foods that cover all the basic food categories. There is always an option for salad and fresh fruit. Children are also required to drink one glass of water at meals to make sure they are staying hydrated before getting juice, milk or lemonade.

Our head chef Deborah Lampert states, “It’s really important that kids enjoy mealtimes while they’re at camp. Lots of brightly colored fresh fruits and veggies, homemade breads and bagels, plus fun foods like real chicken breast strips (oven-baked, not fried) and taco bar keep them happy and on the go while they’re here. Real food for real kids -- that’s the kitchen motto! When they’re well-fed, they’re better able to participate in activities and hear God’s message.“

Aside from what children put in their bodies to fuel them, camp allows children to be outdoors most of the day. Campers have the opportunity to take part in large group games, enjoy water activities and have plenty of time

to dance and sing at our large group sessions. During free time, children have the opportunity to do all these fun activities and more!

Each week there is a registered nurse or doctor on camp grounds, as well as two student nurses. These staff members are here to insure your child has a safe experience at camp. They administer medication during all meal times and after the evening sessions.

Mental and Emotional Health:Each counselor or staff is able to help guide and encourage children to try new things at camp, ask a lot of questions, and to have a positive experience. Children also will learn core values such as the importance of teamwork, the power of friendship, and the love of Christ.

Spiritual Health:It is also important that your child is cared for spiritually while at camp. Covenant Harbor provides children with numerous ways to encounter Jesus throughout the week. Each day, children take part in quiet times, cabin devotionals, a short message and time for worship in the morning and evening sessions, as well as one-on-one and small group discussions with counselors.
