Couture Fashion Week has also achieved a balance rarely seen in thefashion industry as models and designers of multiple nationalities andethnicities harmoniously work together in the common passion for fashion. Infact, the event has created a bridge bringing many diverse people together.As you peruse this issue, you will see examples of this. Designers whoparticipate in this event come from a wide spectrum of countries: Albania,Kuwait, Swaziland, Romania, Australia, Latvia, Colombia, Germany, Russia,Lebanon, Bulgaria, the Dominican Republic and many more including anumber from our own neck of the woods: the United States and especially theNew York area.

Couture Fashion Week serve s as a point of contact for buyers of upscaleboutiques, diplomats, socialites and VIPs as well as a large contingent ofinternational press who come together to network and enjoy top-notchfashions along with the associated ambiance and glamour.

Couture Fashion Week Performers

Alexander Markov has been hailed as one of the most captivating musicians inthe w orld today. Lord Yehudi Menuhin has written, "He is w ithout doubt one of themost brilliant and musical of violinists: Alexander Markov w ill certainly leave hismark on the music-lovers of the w orld and in the annals of the violin virtuosi of ourday."

The Gold Medal w inner at the Paganini International Violin Competition, Mr.Markov has appeared w ith some of the w orld's greatest orchestras including thePhiladelphia Orchestra, l'Orchestre de Paris, the Montreal Symphony, the BBCand Detroit Symphonies as w ell as the Budapest Festival Orchestra. Concertohighlights include performances w ith such celebrated conductors as Lorin Maazel,Charles Dutoit, John Nelson, Neeme Jarvi, Sir Neville Marriner, Ivan Fischer andFranz Welser-Most.

Alexander Markov has established a reputation second-to-none in the 19th-centuryvirtuoso repertoire. His recent Warner DVD release of Paganini's 24 Caprices forsolo violin caused a sensation, and he remains one of the very few violinists w hoprogram the entire set in a single recital.

Awarded a prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1987, Mr. Markov made his New York debut recital atCarnegie Hall, has appeared w ith Christoph Eschenbach conducting the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra atAvery Fisher Hall and has performed w ith other celebrated orchestras including the Houston, Baltimore,Cincinnati and Jerusalem orchestras. In addition, Mr. Markov has recorded five CDs for the Erato/WarnerClassics and was featured in the w idely acclaimed film The Art of Violin. He has also appeared in concert w ithsuch luminaries as Martha Argerich.

Alexander Markov w as born in Moscow and studied violin w ith his father, concert violinist Albert Markov. Bythe time he w as eight years old he w as already appearing as a soloist w ith orchestras and performing doubleconcertos with his father. Markov emigrated to the U.S. w ith his parents and now resides in New York City.

A native of Albania, Gjilberta Gelaj began her cello studies at age six. Afterwinning a national competit ion, she toured Italy w ith the Albanian SymphonyOrchestra at the age of f if teen and w as offered a full scholarship to theConservatorio di Padova.

After moving to the United States, Gjilberta received her Bachelor of Fine Arts inMusic Performance from the Music Conservatory at S.U.N.Y. Purchase. She w enton to study at the Performance Program at the Mannes College of Music inManhattan and is currently pursuing a Masters of Music Education at theSteinhardt School of Education at NY U.

Gjilberta has appeared at Carnegie Hall as a member of the "Passionata Trio"and has given numerous solo, chamber music and orchestral performancesthroughout New York and New Jersey. She has studied w ith eminent cellists suchas Peter Wiley and Andre Emelianoff, and has performed in various masterclasses including w ith Yo-Yo Ma.

Gjilberta is a cello faculty member of the prestigious Abrons Art Center of the Henry Street School Settlement inManhattan, as w ell as of the C Note Music School in Cortland Manor, New York. She has taught extensively inboth her native country and the United States. Gjilberta is proud to be a Charter Member-Associate Artist of theHudson Valley Piano Club.
