The new style village day
was held on Saturday 30th
August. The weather was
kind, and there were lots of
activities for everyone.
Some paraded to the field in
fancy dress preceded by
pipers Cameron and Saul,
some baked, crafted andflower arranged for
competition or sale, some
donated to, manned or
bought from the different
stalls, some threw wellies or
balls at coconuts, fell off the
greasy pole, bounced on the
bouncy castle, played
Pétanque finals, showed their
dogs, enjoyed tea and cakes,
listened to a fiddle group and
more.
A sociable evening was then
held in the hall, with a
barbeque and marquee for theyoungsters. Who knew how
many hours of play could be
had with a few straw bales?
A huge thank you is due to all
the willing volunteers, and
congratulations to all the
prize winners - too many
to mention individually,
although there are some
clues in the Day in
Pictures inside.
Cousland Village Hall
Committee would really
appreciate your feedback
on the day, to help in
planning for 2015. Please
send any comments via
the Courier contacts.
Village Day
Bonfire NightThis year it will be on Friday 7th Novem-
ber at 6.30 pm when the fire will be lit.
The fireworks will be set off at 7pm.
Hot soup will be available for inner
warmth. The field at the east end of the
village next to the playing field will be
where it all happens.
As always we shall be coming round
the houses in the village on Saturday
1st November to collect firewood, so
please put any combustible material
on the pavement by 10am on that day
for us to collect.
Please look out for Ian McKean and
his Firework Bucket going round
the village collecting donations to
purchase fireworks. Thank you all
in anticipation. Last year’s success-
ful collection of over £400 resulted
in a superb display enjoyed by all –
thanks to your generosity!

We will also be planning for our trip

on Saturday 13th December
Reservations will be taken from the
end of October – to book please call

thing but we enjoyed ourselves.
Craft and baking has also been a hit
with the youngsters and we lookforward to our Halloween Party
on Wednesday 29th October - come
dressed to scare!!
The 2014 Cousland PétanqueTournament ended in great style on
the 30th at the Village Day. Three
teams reached the final of this knock-
out competition.
1. Brian Ellis and George Ramage
2. Norrie Brown and Stewart Buchan
3. Steven and Helen Lapinskie
It was a thrilling end to the
tournament which has proved to be
very popular. The winning team was
Brian Ellis and George Ramage who
beat the other two teams with the
following scores
13 to 8 points and 13 to 4 points.
The runners-up were Steven and
Helen. All teams were given a prize
but Brian and George won the brand
new Cousland Petanque Tournament
shield. A very special mention has to
go to George Ramage who was ‘man
-of’-the-match’ because he played
the best games of pétanque on the
day – very well done George andmuch deserved.
Plans for the 2015 Cousland
Pétanque Tournament have now
begun and we will be inviting
people to put their names forward in
the not too distant future. We have
had requests for a Cousland
Pétanque Tournament league and
we will be considering this very
seriously so that people can play on
more than one occasion.
Additionally, and very importantly,
we have also been awarded £700 by
the Big Lottery Fund to purchase
equipment so that our tournament
can be played by anyone who
wishes. In order to secure this
award the CVHA has to raise the
sum of £100 and we will be
fundraising at the November village
café.
The next meeting to take this forward is on 28th
October. If anyone has any issues they want to beincluded for this area, please come along and join thesmall group working with Derek Welsh fromMidlothian Council on this.
At present only Alison Vikis and Kathleen Donald have beenattending from Cousland, but it is important that all local needsand aspirations are included in this plan. So please let us know what they are or come along yourself.

Cousland Smiddy
The massive improvements to the
visual appeal of the area are down to
the hard work and determination of
many village volunteers - Trust
members, Plotters, grass-cutters,
“The Smiddy has never looked better!”
So said our blacksmith, who has
worked there for the last 20 years.

A HUGE THANKS to every one of
our volunteers for their
contributions of time, knowledge
and enthusiasm – not to mention
catering skills - which helped us
to raise £320.00 for the Smiddy
development fund yesterday at
Doors Open Day.
We really do have a special band
of volunteers who are willing to
turn their hands to virtually anything
asked, and we’re very grateful for
the effort put in, remaining cheerful
in the face of extremely depleted
visitor numbers was tricky, but we
still managed to have a good day and
the quality and interest of the visitors
who did come was good to
experience. Practically everyone

those essential excursions out of the
house?

make essential journeys such as
medical appointments, visiting
relatives and attending vital services.
The Red Cross is able to provide a
volunteer driver with a private car or
a specially adapted vehicle for those
with reduced mobility.
> Please phone us on 01506 654 652
to discuss your request.
> In order to secure a driver for your
journey please contact us up to a
month prior to your date of travel, as
we are more likely to be able to
provide transport with advance notice.

Alternatively, you might have a little
spare time to help someone who would
really appreciate it, volunteering

service volunteers give invaluable
assistance to those who can’t get

Poppy Scotland bike raceOn Sunday 21st September the village
became part of the route for the inaugural
Poppy Scotland Sportive Cycle Challenge.
160 riders rode on 2 routes with via
Cousland being an extra stage for the elite
riders group. Tackling Hadfast Road East to
West when nearly at the end of 70k was a
tough ask! Organisers hope to make this an
annual fundraising event for a very
worthwhile cause and Cousland was happy
to be part of it.
