This Year’s Village Day - 29 AugustDid you know that Village Day
started 85th years
ago when the vil-
lage held a ‘Gala
Day’? The format
has evolved over
the years . It no
longer has a gala
king and queen and
now includes events
and competitions
that could not even
have been dreamt
of at the beginning
of the last century.
The village committee work
hard each year to make the day
as enjoyable as possible for all.

Village Garden Tipping Area
The area at the West end of the village for the tipping of
garden refuse (opposite the village hall) exists for use
mainly as a result of the hard work of various people in
the village. This facility is invaluable to the village, and
its ongoing use is dependent on vigilance and good
housekeeping. Please no large items such as tress and
bushes.
The areas for the dumping of ‘soft’ materials (grass cut-
tings, flowers etc) are both clearly marked, so it would
be appreciated if all users could respect these rules.

interest in taking on the project, but
recognised the wisdom of shelving it.
Kathleen Donald has replied on be-
half of the group to Neil Hunter to say
that we are not in a position at the
moment to develop the project of a
Tynewater sports club and to make
an offer for the school site. Pathhead
football club have been informed
and it was suggested that if they are
still keen that they themselves look
into developing the site.
Maybe someone in the new houses
being built will have the vision and
enthusiasm to motivate folk to take
advantage of the Council’s willing-
ness to offer the site for the benefit of
the village.
Doors Open Day on Saturday 12th
September is a big event in the vil-lage calendar and regularly draws
many visitors. This year the publicity
has gone far and wide and Cousland
Smiddy is also included in Scottish
Archaeology Month information as an
industrial archaeology venue.
Sean Cockburn blacksmith will have
the forge open all day and the new
Heritage Hub will be officially
opened to the public for the first time
at 10am. The Heritage Hub shows our
village’s history in the new home for
the History Project group.
The day runs from 10am – 4.30pm
and there will be teas all day, soup at
lunchtime and produce & sales table.
We’ll be needing help on the day
with guiding visitors and teas, as ev-
er, home baking donations would be
much appreciated – we are well
known for the quality of our teas!
Marquees are to go up early in the
morning and need to be taken down
again at the end of the day. We have
a well-practiced routine, but this
year we have much more to show visitors. Please contact Sheena 663
2730 or [email protected]
if you are able to give us some time.
Please come along and see how far
the project has come, you will be
impressed!

age Hub website is up and running

Update Former Cousland School — sad news
BE AWARE — Telephone 101
The Tynewater Sports Development
Group were invited by Neil Hunter,
property development manager of
Midlothian Council to put in a busi-
ness plan and offer for the former
Cousland School. However, many of
those in Cousland who originally were interested in taking this for-
ward have now expressed their re-
gret that they do not now have the
time to work on ideas for the school
site. It was felt that there were too
few folk to do the work of a communi-
ty consultation for the whole of Tyne-
water villages and outlying areas.
Rebecca McKinney who was happy
to work with the group expressed
her disappointment that the commu-
nity were not able to muster enough

next to the Smiddy Cottage, minor re-
pairs and refurbishment of the smiddy
exterior and the whitewashing of the
smiddy interior.
Again, a huge thanks are due to our
volunteers, espe-
cially Stuart
Naysmith. Things
look better than
they have for years.
There’s still a way
to go, so watch out
for further volun-
teering opportuni-
ties!
We also took the
opportunity to in-
troduce our new
tenant blacksmith,
Sean Cockburn, to
our community.
Sean is just starting out on his own and
we’re thrilled that he’ll be working with
us in what we believe is Scotland’s old-
est continuously working smiddy -
keeping alive a 300 year old tradition
of a working smiddy at the heart of
Cousland village.
Cousland Smiddy Trust Celebrates and Welcomes MSP
On 4 July 2015, the Smiddy Trust hosted
a “Drinksiller” - a celebration of the
completion of the practical works phase
of its ambitious scheme to create a
Cousland Community Heritage Hub in
the refurbished Smiddy Cottage.
This project, in partnership with theCousland Local History Project, was part-
ly funded by a grant of £9,700 from the
Heritage Lottery Fund.
Local tradespeople, including Pawel
Lysiak, Clark Millar and Stuart Naysmith,
and our valued volunteers have worked
beyond the call of duty to support the
development.
The Heritage Hub will open to the pub-
lic on 12 September 2015, on Doors
Open Day.
Colin Beattie, MSP for North Midlothian
and Musselburgh, officially launched
theHeritage Hub.
The event was really a triple celebra-
tion!
A parallel project to improve the smid-
dy environment had also reached a
notable stage.
A generous donation of £7,200 fromMidlothian Council has already ena-
bled the creation of a beautifully paved
outdoor space (by Paving Perfection)
