Welcome to our Adult Learning brochure 2020 in which we have a wide range of courses and workshops to tempt you. It is divided into four sections, Horticulture, Garden Craft, Creative and Photography.

In the Horticulture section, we have the essential skills of rose, apple and shrub pruning, as well as the seasonal What Now demos to help keep you up to date with garden tasks. There are several workshops for beginners and a new walk on colour-themed gardens, following the opening of our new Cool Garden to complement the Hot Garden.

Garden Craft covers a wide range of willow weaving – useful items for the garden, baskets, trugs and sculptures, our ever popular Christmas Wreaths and for the first time two wood working workshops.

The Creative section includes a wonderful selection of art workshops in different styles and with a variety of passionate tutors. There are needle-felted creatures and landscapes, two outdoor mosaic workshops for making stunning creations for your own garden, drawing days, paper peonies and dahlias and three new workshops making cordials, flavoured gins, smoothies and vinegars. We are very lucky to welcome Chrissie Juno-Mann from the Royal School of Needlework, who offers two exquisite hand embroidery workshops,

or you may prefer one of our two-day Printmaking sessions. Natural skincare and home-made remedies are also offered, and if plant dyes interest you, we have three engaging tutors teaching Natural Plant-based Inks for paper, Natural Plant Dyes for fabrics, and the fascinating art of Indigo Dyeing and Shibori.

If your photography skills could do with some inspiration, our ever popular tutor, Ross Hoddinott, returns to teach two one day workshops to improve your close-up camera skills with flowers.

All our courses and workshops offer the opportunity to learn alongside RHS horticulturists and experts in their field in the very beautiful and unique setting of RHS Garden Rosemoor.

Please do book early to avoid disappointment and don’t forget our courses and workshops also make perfect and unusual presents for friends and family, and can be booked online. We hope you find a course to match your needs and look forward to welcoming you to the garden in 2020.

Taking Better Garden Close-ups Saturday 20 June 10.30am to 4.30pmTutor: Ross Hoddinott

Ross Hoddinott is one of the UK’s leading outdoor photographers and a close-up specialist. He is the author of 8 photography books, including ‘Digital Macro & Close-up Photography’ and multi-award winner. During this photography workshop, Ross will offer expert guidance on how to capture eye-catching close-ups and give advice on technique, lighting and composition. During spring and early summer, RHS Garden Rosemoor is arguably at its best, bursting with interesting new growth, and vibrant, interesting flowers – there will be no shortage of picture potential. Due to the limited group size, a good deal of personal 1-2-1 attention and tuition is guaranteed – allowing Ross to tailor his advice to your exact requirements and level of experience. To get the best from the day with Ross, we suggest you bring a digital SLR or mirrorless camera, plus either a dedicated macro lens or close-up attachment.

PhotographyMastering Flower PhotographyFriday 4 September 10.30am to 4.30pmTutor: Ross Hoddinott

Flowers are vibrant, elegant and exquisitely beautiful things but flower photography is far from easy. To capture the beauty and character of flowering blooms requires good camera handling skills, technique and a creative eye. Join close-up specialist Ross Hoddinott for a masterclass in flower photography when he will offer expert guidance on camera settings, focusing and depth of field, while also highlighting the importance of subject selection, background choice and shooting angle. Emphasis will be placed on creativity and also the influence of light. Photographers of all abilities are welcome, but participants will ideally be using a digital SLR or mirrorless camera, and also have their own macro lens (or a dedicated close-up attachment). A sturdy tripod with low level capability is also highly recommended.
