ASSESSMENT AND PATHOPHYSIOLOGY Credit: 3 Lecture Hours: 66 Lab Hours: 0 Clinical Hours: 0 Work Exp. Hours: 0 Text/Reference 1: Lewis, S., Heitkemper, M., and Dirksen, S. (2007). Medical-surgical nursing: assessment and management of clinical problems (7th ed). St. Louis: Mosby. Text/Reference 2: Jarvis, C. (2008). Pocket companion for physical examination and health assessment (5th ed.). St. Louis: Saunders. Description: This course provides the student with advanced assessment knowledge and techniques essential for the management of nursing care for patients with complex medical-surgical conditions. Consideration is given to the assessment of special populations. In-depth pathophysiology of body system disorders is discussed. The concepts of fluid and electrolyte and acid-base balance are addressed. This course provides the foundation for nursing care management of complex patients. Prerequisites: Concurrent with ADN142 Advanced Nursing Concepts. Focus: This course is designed to prepare the Associate Degree Nursing student to perform advanced level assessment techniques, collect pertinent patient data, analyze in-depth assessment findings, and formulate appropriate nursing diagnoses and interventions. The pathophysiology of medical-surgical conditions is addressed.

Student Contribution: Class attendance and participation is expected in order to maximize the learning experience. Each student is required to prepare for class by reading assigned material. Evaluation: An examination schedule and grading criteria will be provided. Final grades will be based on the following percentages: A=93-100%; B=85-92%; C=78-84%; D=75-77%; F=0-74%. IMPORTANT: All examinations taken early/late will be given in an alternate format unless criteria for approved leave are met. Make-up examinations must be completed before the final week of the term unless prior approval of an excused leave is granted. In such cases, examinations must be completed within six weeks of the return from an excused leave.
