Advice Overview
Course Management Academic Advising Course Selection
Academic Advising
Advisors… Schedule courses to keep you on
track to finish. Advise you what should and should
not take. Help you achieve success –
ultimately YOU Are responsible.
Academic Advising cont’
When seeing your advisor: Familiarize yourself with your requirements
BEFORE seeing him or her. Take control of your own success. Do not limit your session to getting
signatures and finding out what courses to take.
You AND your advisor develop your plan of action towards finishing your course of study.
Course Selection
You need to know: What courses are required for your
program of study. What you are interested in taking. If you need remedial help in any
area.
Course Selection cont’
Familiarize yourself with course content by looking at the course description.
If you don’t like a description, you may not like a course. Don’t sign up for classes hoping you will like them. You probably won’t.
If it is a required course, do what you need to do to engage yourself in the course.
Course Selection cont’
If you have not chosen a plan of study, take core courses (100 level).
Use core courses to: Expose yourself to different majors –
this may help you choose Take courses that everyone needs –
get basic courses out of the way
Course Selection cont’
Remember your goals. Course selection works with your reasons for being in school to help you get the most out of your college experience. Both of these work together with advising for the most success.
Course Selection cont’
Academic advising + course selection = course management
Be an active participant – chart your own path! Do not rely on someone else to pick your direction. You may end up going somewhere you do not want to go.
Course Selection cont’
BE PROACTIVE! Make sure you have all the information you need to make informed decisions about your college career.
Semesters are shorter than you think – plan for the next semester early.
Course Selection cont’
Ultimately, course selection will help anyone, but especially those who are planning to go to a 4 year institution. Being on the ball now will lead to an easier time later.
