2. COURSE & UNIT INFORMATION

If you have already studied at university level or have significant relevant work experience, you can apply for credit towards your ACU course. Credited units replace units you would otherwise study, so you can finish your course earlier. You can apply for credit towards your ACU course by completing an Application for Credit / Recognition of Prior Learning form. The form should be submitted no later than the census date in the first semester of your enrolment in the course. The census date is the last day you can make changes to your student enrolment before you become committed to your fees.

Professional experience units require continuous full-time engagement regardless of the enrolled study mode. Students complete all placements as described, either as individual days or in a sustained block. The culminating experience will include at least 25 days of continuous time in education settings. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: • Prerequisite units are indicated in italics. A prerequisite is a requirement that must be met before

enrolling in a unit.

• ‘Teaching Subjects’ are also known as ‘Curriculum, Pedagagy and Assessment Units’ or ‘CPA Units’. You may ONLY enrol in the CPA units that are aligned with your APPROVED teaching areas. You will have received confirmation of your approved teaching areas along with your initial letter of offer. If you are unsure of your approved teaching areas, please contact your Course Coordinator immediately.

• You can find a list of CPA units starting on page 12. Certain CPA units may only be offered in online mode.

• Students in the MTeach/GCRE course DO NOT complete an elective as part of their normal sequence of units.

• MTeach/GCRE students may be permitted to substitute the third CPA sequence with two approved

electives to ensure that they complete a total of 190 credit points. See your Course Coordinator to see if this option is available to you.

• MTeach students with a ‘single’ Science, Business or Humanities teaching area will usually have to complete a prescribed elective. This means that it is usually not possible for students in the MTeach/GCRE course to complete a ‘single’ science specialisation with another non-science discipline (eg. Mathematics).

• While elective units are listed in the course maps in particular semesters and years, MTeach Elective units can be studied at any time after Year 1, Semester 1. This includes Summer Term, Winter Term and Professional Terms, subject to unit availability.

• Students who do not follow the sequence recommended in their course map cannot be guaranteed a

clash free timetable or completion within the normal course duration period. LANTITE Successful achievement of approved benchmarks in literacy and numeracy (LANTITE) is a requirement for teacher accreditation or registration in Australia and is also one of the requirements for course completion at ACU. LANTITE is also a prerequisite for a professional experience unit (refer to your course map). Visit the FEA website for more information: http://www.acu.edu.au/866560. Notification of LANTITE registration and testing information is regularly sent to your ACU email.

STUDY MODES Attendance: Unit delivered primarily via face-to-face or video conference attendance, at an ACU campus or another location. Multi-mode: Unit delivered via a combination of online content and a compulsory attendance component (including examinations, practicums, residentials, etc.) Online: Unit delivered fully online (including assessments).

Unit Selection You must enrol for both semesters, not just Semester 1. Not only is this a requirement of the Academic Regulations, but ACU also uses enrolment information to understand the demand for each unit and schedule enough spaces. Enrol now for the full year so you don’t miss out on the units you want. You can easily change your Semester 2 units later if you change your mind. Remember, Semester 2 tuition fees are not due until August. Students can enrol in any offered mode of a unit (Attendance or Online), regardless of how or where they are enrolled in their course. Minimum enrolment numbers apply to all units. The Faculty of Education and Arts reserves the right to cancel units with low enrolment numbers. Students’ progression will not be compromised and they will be advised of cancellations prior to the start of semester and offered an alternative unit.

Units for Teaching Areas Pre-service teachers may only enrol in ‘Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment’ (CPA) units consistent with the eligible Teaching Areas identified at admission or as approved by the Course Co-ordinator. Your eligible teaching areas will have been identified in your original offer for the course, and your eligibility determined when you made application. Your teaching areas are displayed in Student Connect under My Enrolment > Confirmation of Enrolment, as shown below. Some students will be qualified for more than two teaching areas, and may apply to swap. If you believe the teaching areas identified in Student Connect are incorrect, please contact your Course Coordinator immediately. This is the information that will be used to track your progress through the course. Placement Officers will also refer only to this information when arranging professional experience placements for you.

The complete list of available teaching areas, and the CPA units which you need to enrol in are shown in the table that follows. In most cases, there are two unit CPA units for each teaching area; in some cases there are three. Some examples have been provided after the table to explain which units to be enrolled in at what points in the course. Note that MTeach/GCRE students should have RE listed as a teaching area. Most MTeach/GCRE students will have RE and two other teaching areas listed. Some MTeach/GCRE students will have RE and only one other listed.

Required Number of Teaching Areas within the MTeach Course

Pre-service teachers will usually have two teaching areas, and will therefore enrol in four CPA units in their course (two for each teaching area). In some cases, students may be required to complete three CPA units for one of their teaching areas. In some states and in some disciplines, a pre-service teacher may have a ‘double’ teaching area because they have a particularly strong academic background (usually at least 10 undergraduate units) in the field. This will be identified at admission or as approved by the Course Coordinator. Such students enrol in the ‘CPA 1 & 2’ units as listed below as one pair of units. For their second pair of CPA units, there are some teaching areas in which specific units are available (these are explained with the footnotes in the table below). In the majority of situations, students will take EDCU519 (‘CPA Extension 3’) and EDCU520 (‘CPA Extension 4’), which are offered fully online.

Required Number of Teaching Areas within the MTeach/GCRE Course

Religious Education (RE) CPA units are a compulsory sequence within the MTeach/GCRE course. Many students will be eligible for two teaching areas in addition to RE, or RE combined with a double teaching area (i.e. the same as MTeach, but with RE added). In this course, students do not take an elective (see the course maps and the ‘Important Information’ notes above). Some students will be eligible for RE together with only one other teaching area. This will be identified at admission or as approved by the Course Coordinator and may only be possible in certain states and on certain campuses. Eligible students must have the equivalent to a major study in that one teaching area. These students replace one of the two CPA sequences in their course map with either CPA extension units (EDCU519 – CPA Extension 3 and EDCU520 – CPA Extension 4) or two electives. Students seeking to take a different CPA sequence as electives must seek advice from their Course Coordinator as eligibility criteria apply. Any such arrangement would not consistute a change to the approved teaching areas, nor would any placement be in that field.

Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment Units by Teaching Area

Graduate teachers must apply for formal registration in the state or territory in which they wish to work. Recognised teaching areas for the purposes of teacher registration may vary from state to state. As such, not all CPA units are available on every campus. The availability of teaching areas on each campus is shown in the table on page 14 along with corresponding CPA sequences. CPA units may be offered in multimode or fully online. STUDY MODES Multi-mode: Unit delivered via a combination of online content and a compulsory attendance component (including examinations, practicums, residentials, etc.) Online: Unit delivered fully online (including assessments). Unit availablility and study modes are subject to change in line with minimum enrolment requirements, staffing and resources. If you cannot find a multimode offering on your local campus, please search for online offerings before contacting your Course Administrator or Course Coordinator. Where offerings are changed, students will be notified in writing through their student email account and alternative arrangements suggested (e.g. where a multimode offering is closed a student may be advised to enrol in the online offering instead). In some cases, certain CPA units may only be offered every second year. If you are unsure of which CPA units to enrol in, please contact your Course Coordinator.

INFORMATION ABOUT ‘DOUBLE’ TEACHING AREAS In most cases, ‘double’ teaching area students should enrol in the Extension CPA sequence (EDCU519 - CPA Extension 3 and EDCU520 - CPA Extension 4). These units are offered fully online. In the following situations, specialised CPA units should be studied instead: 1 For students with a double Religious Education teaching area, students should take the Studies of Religion units as the second teaching area. 2 For students with a double Visual Arts teaching area EDAR518 – Visual Arts CPA 3 and EDAR519 – Visual Arts CPA 4 are recommended (subject to availiabilty). 3 Students with a double Music teaching area should complete all four Music CPA units. For students with a single teaching area of music, the usual arrangement is to undertake the classroom sequence (EDMU508 and EDMU509), but with approval the ensemble sequence may be studied instead. O In addition to the mode of delivery identified for each campus, certain units may also be available in fully online mode.

CPA Sequence Examples Example 1: most teaching areas involve two 2-unit CPA sequences, e.g. English and Drama

Year 1, Semester 1 Year 1, Semester 2 Year 2, Elective block English CPA 1 English CPA 2 MTeach: Any available elective

MTeach/GCRE: there is no elective Drama CPA 1 Drama CPA 2

Example 2: two 3-unit CPA sequences, in the same general field will have two units common e.g. Business and Economics

Year 1, Semester 1 Year 1, Semester 2 Year 2, Elective block Business and Commerce CPA 1 Business Studies CPA MTeach: Any available elective

MTeach/GCRE: there is no elective Humanities CPA 1 or Extension CPA 3

Legal Studies CPA

Note: In the case of a History and Geography combination, Humanities CPA 1 is not required.

Year 1, Semester 1 Year 1, Semester 2 Year 2, Elective block History CPA 1 History CPA 2 MTeach: Any available elective

MTeach/GCRE: there is no elective Geography CPA 1 Geography CPA 2

Example 3: two different fields, where one is a 3-unit sequence and the other is a 2-unit sequence

MTeach/GCRE students (whose program does not have an elective) or Victorian students wishing to take EDRE642 for Catholic accreditation, should consult their Course Coordinator as under these circumstances some flexibility may be possible regarding a suitable enrolment pattern. Students enrolled on a campus where Humanities CPA 1 is not being offered should also contact their Course Coordinator.

Example 3c: Maths and Business

Year 1, Semester 1 Year 1, Semester 2 Year 2, Elective block Mathematics CPA 1 Mathematics CPA 2 Humanities CPA 1 (usually in Sem 1) Commerce and Business CPA 1 Business Studies CPA

Example 3d: Mathematics and Physics

Year 1, Semester 1 Year 1, Semester 2 Year 2, Elective block Mathematics CPA 1 Mathematics CPA 2 Science CPA 2 (usually in Sem 1) Science CPA 1 Physics CPA

Example 4: two different fields, where both are 3-unit sequences

This would be an unusual situation, such as Business and Physics. The three unit sequence would usually need to be maintained for the teaching area in which there is a major (‘first teaching area’). For a second teaching area, some flexibility is usually possible to avoid overload. Students should consult with their Course Coordinator regarding a suitable enrolment pattern.
