Tribal are currently working with a number of colleges, employers, local authorities and

training providers in Scotland. We are also collaborating with the Scottish Qualifications

Authority (SQA) in several ways: providing learning resources to support some of their

qualifications offered in England; taking part in a process which will lead to Tribal resources

in Core and Essential Skills being endorsed by the SQA; and discussing other collaborative

development projects as part of a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ between our two

organisations. Some examples of our work with colleges in Scotland are illustrated

throughout this directory.

James Watt College wanted to compile a portfolio of programmes suitable for distance learning

delivery to meet the training needs of the local community.

The mode of learning required was a pure distance learning model and, as such, there was a need to

source high-quality, attractive and user-friendly support materials that would not only help to engage

but also assist in motivating the learner to successful completion.

Telephone: 01904 550110 Tribal Course Directory 2012

James Watt College recognised that Tribal could provide high-quality distance learning materials and

source learners as a solution to fully meet its requirements.

The extent of the product offering available

from Tribal appealed to the college and they

have since delivered a range of programmes

published by Tribal, including NCFE Certificates

in Dementia Awareness, Personal Exercise and

Nutrition, and Palliative Care.

The ongoing reputation for high-quality delivery

continued in 2010/11, with over 3,000 learners

completing distance learning programmes

using Tribal learning materials. This level of

activity is maintained for 2011/12.

The college included Tribal’s newest programme for their 2011/12 curriculum offering: the NCFE

Level 3 (SCQF Level 6) Certificate in Diabetes Awareness. This helped to broaden their distance

learning provision further and provided an opportunity to engage with large numbers of learners within

new sectors. Their success and reputation has enabled them to cast their net wider than the local

community and to support funded delivery of Tribal programmes beyond their local region.

For further information about the range of programmes used by James Watt College, see overleaf.

The solution – employer engagement, learner find and provision of appropriate learning resources

benefits• Assists in the cost-effective delivery of quality

flexible and responsive training provision.

• User-friendly learning materials keep learners

engaged.

• Helps the college engage with a large

number of work-based, employer-led

learners locally and nationally.

• Increase in employer engagement.

“We have used

Tribal’s learning materials

continuously now for over five

years. The quality of Tribal’s flexible

learning materials helps to motivate

and engage our distance learners,

which fits perfectly within our

delivery model.”

Employer Engagement and Learner FindThe emphasis on employer involvement in further education means that working with

employers continues to be a key priority for colleges and training providers.

providers source learners and work with employers at all levels. We offer a diverse range of

marketing approaches to engage employers, who then work with our partner colleges to

meet their needs using Tribal learning resources.

Our marketing approach includes:

health and well-being. It is relevant to those who wish to gain a greater understanding of

how to exercise appropriately for their age, ability and current fitness level; those seeking to

to plan and monitor their personal exercise and dietary progress.

Our learning materials for this qualification comprise three mandatory units, covering the

following areas: health and exercise; the role of nutrition in exercise; and planning/preparing

for personal exercise and nutrition.

Clydebank College wanted to find an innovative and improved way to deliver learning in three of the five Core Skills –

Numeracy, Communication and ICT – at SCQF Level 4 (Intermediate 1). In order to assist with their core skills delivery, the

college wanted to source engaging, straightforward flexible resources, which were visually stimulating and created in a

way that would increase learners’ understanding.

8 Tribal Course Directory 2012 www.tribalgroup.com/publishing

Tribal developed and published contextualised Core Skills materials for the Hair and Beauty curriculum.

For apprenticeship delivery and work-based learning, employers

have identified the ‘core skills’ as those that are most likely to be

needed in any work environment and every job will require some

level of ability in some or all of these skills. By delivering the skills

in a contextualised way, Clydebank College has grabbed the

attention of its learners, helped to increase their understanding and

put the skills into practice in a context that they can understand.

This in turn has contributed to increased retention and attainment

rates, which has helped to maximise the College’s funding.

Tribal has published contextualised Core Skills courses in other curriculum areas, which the college is planning to

roll out where appropriate as part of their delivery. These include the following SCQF Level 4 courses in Numeracy,

Communication and ICT:

• Retail

• Health and Social Care

• Construction

• Childcare

• Hospitality and Catering

• Business and Administration

• Customer Service

The solution – provision of appropriate learning resources

benefits• Designed for the new Core Skills units as well

as the workplace Core Skills units.

• Contextualised into subject-specific areas.

• Easy to understand, flexible learning materials.

“We began

using Tribal’s Core Skills

materials in Hair and Beauty

last academic year. The learners

especially enjoyed the contextualised

nature of the material which really

assisted the engagement,

motivation and understanding

of core skills.”

It comes complete with a fully integrated online reporting system and is flexible and learner-centred. Learners can access

their own learning space from anywhere they can access the internet – at home, at work, at college, or in a learning centre

or library. Wherever tutors are situated, if they can get online, they can support their learners. It is a cost-effective way of

ensuring that staffing resources are well utilised.

Core Skills: Target Skills Scotland is delivered completely online. By logging on to your organisation’s own area of Core

Employability – essential work skills

14 Tribal Course Directory 2012 www.tribalgroup.com/publishing

This engaging resource includes an employability skills assessment, designed to find out more about the skills, attitudes

and behaviours that individuals currently have and those that they need to develop.

The skills assessment covers the following areas:

• Work motivation – attitudes and motivation towards getting a job and starting work.

• Career progression – career goals and approaches towards achieving them.

• Job search skills – where and how potential jobs are identified.

• Job application skills – methods used when applying for jobs.

• Interview skills – interview preparation.

• Work attitudes and behaviours – approaches to work, including working with others and communication.

• Practical skills for work – skills and knowledge needed for effective day-to-day operation in the workplace.

The employability skills assessment collates learner responses and provides an overall result in one of three categories or

levels:

• getting ready for work

• ready for work

• competent at work.

These three categories/levels equate approximately to Levels 3/4 respectively in the SCQF. From an individual’s results, a

learning plan is created with activities to help build skills related to the different sections of the assessment.

Employability assessment

interactiveIncreasingly, jobseekers need skills and abilities in online job search. Many job opportunities now require candidates to

complete online applications and undertake online assessments, such as ability tests and situational judgement tests, as

part of the recruitment process. To enable learners to develop skills in this key area, the resources focus on the following

areas.

Finding job vacancies online

This section covers job search on a website, registering, receiving email alerts and uploading a CV, safety of individuals

and their personal information when looking for jobs online and finding job vacancies on employers’ own websites.

Applying for jobs online

This section looks at the advantages of online applications and also highlights any issues to be aware of. It also covers the

different types of online application and what they may involve.

Online assessments

This covers some of the different online tests and quizzes that employers may use in their recruitment process, such as

ability tests, personality quizzes and situational judgement questionnaires.
