Diploma Types: General and Honors

Colleges now require that GPAs (Grade Point Averages) be figured on a 4.0 scale for scholarship consideration and admission purposes; therefore all GPAs at the Monroe County High School will be based on a 4.0 scale. Class rankings will be on a weighted scale. However, the grading scale in AP (Advanced Placement), CP (College Prep) and general courses are weighted differently.

Beginning with the class of 2018, Monroe County High School will only recognize a One Diploma System. The Kentucky Department of Education shall reimburse local public school districts the cost of the three required AP exams for every student receiving a minimum composite score on any of the three exams.

Students planning to complete an early graduation program shall notify the Principal of their intent prior to the beginning of grade nine (9) or as soon thereafter as the intent is known.

CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION 08.113

Graduation Requirements

In support of student development goals set out in KRS 158.6451 and the Kentucky Academic

Expectations, students must complete a minimum of twenty-six (26) credits, including

demonstrated performance-based competency in technology, and all other state and local

requirements in order to graduate from high school in the District.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the credits required by the Kentucky Core Academic Standards, the Board may

impose other credit requirements for graduation from high school.

All required courses shall include content contained in the Kentucky Core Academic Standards,

and electives shall address academic and career interest standards-based learning experiences,

including four (4) credits in an academic or career interest based on the student’s individual

learning plan.

Students that do not meet the college readiness benchmarks for English and language arts and/or

mathematics shall take a transitional course or intervention before exiting high school.

In keeping with statutory requirements, the District shall accept for credit toward graduation and

completion of high school course requirements an advanced placement or a high school equivalent

course taken by a student in grades 5, 6, 7, or 8 if that student attains performance levels expected

of high school students in the District as determined by achieving a score of "3" or higher on a

College Board Advanced Placement examination or a grade of "B" or better in a high school

equivalent.2

DIPLOMA PROGRAMS

The Board may grant different diplomas to those students who complete credits above the

minimum number as established by the Kentucky Board of Education.

Students will select one of the following two (2) diploma programs: General and Honors.

PERFORMANCE-BASED CREDIT

In addition to Carnegie units, students may earn credit toward high school graduation through the

District’s standards-based, performance-based credit system that complies with requirements of

Kentucky Administrative Regulation. Procedures for the developing and amending the system

shall address the following:

1. Conditions under which high school credit will be granted under the system that allow students

to demonstrate proficiency and earn credit for learning acquired outside the normal classroom

setting, outside of school, or in prior learning;

Performance-based credit may be earned while the student is still “in school,” but the

instructional setting will look different from a traditional “seat time” environment.

2. Performance descriptors and their linkages to State content standards and academic

expectations;

At the high school level, performance descriptors and evaluation procedures shall be

established to determine if the content and performance standards have been met.

3. Assessments and the extent to which state-mandated assessments will be used;

4. An objective grading and reporting process; and

5. Criteria to promote and support school and community learning experiences, such as

internships and cooperative learning, in support of a student’s individual learning plan. Such

experiences shall be supervised by qualified instructors and aligned with State and District

content and performance standards.

The high school student handbook shall include complete details concerning specific graduation

and diploma program requirements.

OTHER PROVISIONS

The Board, Superintendent, Principal, or teacher may award special recognition to students. In addition, the

Board may award a diploma to a student posthumously indicating graduation with the class with which the

student was expected to graduate.

Seniors must successfully complete six (6) credits in the twelfth (12th) grade in order to graduate.

The student with disabilities who completes an alternative program specified in an individual educational

plan is entitled to recognition for achievement. Consistent with the District’s graduation practices for all

students, an alternative high school diploma shall be awarded to students with disabilities in compliance

with applicable legal requirements. In addition, former students may submit to the Superintendent a request

that the District provide them with an alternative high school diploma to replace the certificate of attainment

they received at time of graduation from the District.3

Any student who does not complete the required twenty six (26)-credit criteria at Monroe County High

School in eight (8) sequential semesters, will have the opportunity to complete their high school education

through a plan developed by the Principal and guidance counselors using the Alternative Learning Center

when possible.

Exceptions will only be in extreme circumstances involving illness or injury which will be determined by

the head principal of Monroe County High School.

DIPLOMAS FOR VETERANS

In keeping with statute and regulation, the Board shall award an authentic high school diploma to an

Becoming well versed in the English-Language Arts requires students to develop skills and understandings that are closely intertwined; such connectedness helps students become discerning and thoughtful readers, writers, listeners, speakers, and viewers of texts both inside and outside of the classroom. All courses in English-Language Arts address these standards: (A) reading, (B) writing, (C) research, (D) listening, viewing, and speaking, and (E) study skills and test taking. Science All students are required to have 3 credit 1 each year –Integrated Science, or Aviation Science, Biology, Chemistry or Integrated Science IIEarth & Space Science) INTEGRATED SCIENCE: (Year Long) 9TH Grade 1 credit

This course is designed as an introduction of physical science , biology and chemistry. This is a laboratory-based course. Many of the topics discussed in the classroom will also be explored in the laboratory. This course will involve continuous assessment for understanding. Each student will be expected to fully participate in discussions, lab activities, group projects and presentations. Biology: (Year Long) 10th Grade 1 credit Pre- requisite: Integrated Science 1 Inquiry-based course required for graduation. It is designed to familiarize you with science processes, skills, and understandings related to a wide range of topics in biology. During this course, you will learn to identify the basic questions and concepts that guide scientific investigation and to design and conduct your own investigations. Some important skills you will develop include, microscopy, graphing and measurement, identification of research questions, making connections, and the ability to be a self-directed learner. This course is designed to prepare you for the end of course assessment in Biology. (End of Course Assessment Exam) Earth/Space Science 2: (Semester) 11th Grade - 1 credit

A general education science course that is designed to meet graduation requirements only. This course does not meet pre-college curriculum requirements. A laboratory-based course that will cover the content and application of many physical science concepts, including (but not limited to): the scientific method and inquiry, structure of the atom and the periodic table, chemical bonding and compounds, acids and bases, waves, light and optics, and electricity and magnetism. CHEMISTRY CP: (Semester) 11th-12th Grade - 1 credit Pre-requisite: Biology

This is a science course that is designed to meet graduation and pre-college curriculum requirements. Since it is CP course, topics will be covered quickly and in-depth. Chemistry CP is a laboratory based course in the study of matter. Topics to be

Social Studies ECONOMICS/WORLD GEOGRAPHY/GOVERNMENT : (Year Long) 9TH Grade - 1 Credit

Economics course is for students to demonstrate an understanding of basic economic concepts. Students become familiar with the economic system of the United States and how it operates. They also explore roles of various components of the American economic system. Students examine their roles as consumer, worker, investor and voting citizen. Topics of discussion include the Stock Market, comparative economic systems and the impact of political and social decisions on the economy. World Geography students study people places, and environments at local, regional, national and international levels from the spatial and ecological perspectives of geography. The six Social Studies standards of essential content knowledge and four process skills are integrated for instructional purposes GOVERNMENT: (Semester) 10TH Grade - 1 credit Required Course:

Study and learn world events beginning with the Renaissance and Reformation to the modern day. They will learn the historical importance of world events, the different perspectives of people/groups involved and how these events have impacted modern day cultures. Many of the events/themes studies in World History will build background knowledge for U.S. History in 11th grade. (Units of Study: Ancient World and The Middle Ages; New Ideas and Empires; European Society; Industrialization and Nationalism; Imperialism and World Wards; The Contemporary World) U. S HISTORY (Year Long) 11TH Grade - 1 credit Required Course

After a review, the focus will be on the reconstruction period to the present, looking at the forces that shape political, economic and social institutions and the impact of those forces on the development of the United States in the twentieth century. (End of Course Assessment Exam) WORLD CIVILIZATION: (Sem. Class) 12th Grade - 1 credit U.S. HISTORY AP: (Elective) (Year Long) 11th-12TH Grade - 1 credit

This course in United States History is designed to provide students with analytic skills and factual knowledge necessary to deal critically with the problems and materials in United States History. The purpose of this course is for students to learn U. S. History from discovery to the present to develop higher order thinking, writing and participation skills and to help successfully prepare students for the advanced Placement United States History Exam. Designed to enable students to grasp the formal structures of algebra by grounding students in familiar contexts and real world applications of algebraic thinking that they can use to study other branches of math in high school and college, in their career choices or in everyday life. Helps students in transition in thinking capabilities from concrete to abstract reasoning. ACCELERATED ALGEBRA I CP: (Year Long) 9TH Grade - 1 credit

Course description is same as Algebra I. Also, will be introduced to geometric concepts at end of the course. ALGEBRA II: (Year Long) 11TH Grade - 1 credit Pre-requisite: Algebra I & Geometry Prepares you for mathematical thinking in future educational experiences, as well as, prepare you for life in the real world. Will address several different topics, learn mathematical concepts, as well as, how to use them and apply them to your everyday lives. Will do book work, graphing calculator and other technology activities, participate in cooperative learning activities and hands on real world applications of our studies. Purpose of the course is to provide for exploration and improvement of skills needed by the student wanting to continue education beyond high school. Covers concept on points, lines and planes and their relationships to one another, including, some proof. Will also study constructions, triangles and their properties. ACCELERATED GEOMETRY CP: (Year Long) 10H Grade - 1 credit

Designed for students who show advanced aptitude in math. Covers all topics in regular geometry but will also cover other topics in geometry. CP GRADING SCALE

This course provides an overview of the arts, music, dance, drama/theatre and visual arts. Topics will include elements, styles, principals, purpose, history and careers in the arts. This course is for students who wish to continue their study of band music and improve their skills to perform at an advanced level. Students should have been enrolled in a band course during the previous year. Music studied in this class includes a variety of styles and range in difficulty. Members of the Marching Band are required to participate in all activities of the Marching Band. Music clinics are held in the Spring and summer in addition to Band Camp. These activities are provided to prepare all members of the Marching Band for performances at football games, marching festivals and parades. CONCERT BAND: 9TH – 12TH Grade - 1 credit

Offered for students who wish to continue their study of band music and improve their skills to perform at an advanced level. Students must be enrolled in Instrumental Music the previous semester. The band’s repertoire includes a wide variety of musical styles and periods to enhance the student’s knowledge of music and performing skills. This performing group performs a minimum of two concerts and one festival performance per year.

MEDIA PRODUCTION: 10th – 12th Grade – 1 credit Media Production is designed to introduce students at Monroe County High School to the world of audio/video production and digital video editing. This is a team oriented class, where students work together, to complete high quality video productions. You will be graded on individual work assignments and have the opportunity to shoot and edit video productions. Students will be required to demonstrate competency in camera operation, script writing, lighting, audio recording and video editing. Students enrolled in this course may earn college credit through Campbellsville University if they have obtained an ACT composite score of 21, with an ACT score in Science of 19. French I is a beginning course which is designed to give students the experience of learning a second language and gaining an appreciation of the cultures and places in which French is spoken. Major emphasis is on the conversational skills of listening and speaking.

FRENCH II: (Semester) 9th-12TH Grade - 1 credit (Pre-requisite: French I) Pre-requisite: French I French II continues and expands on concepts/skills learned in French I. The course is designed to give students the experience of learning a second language and gaining an appreciation of the cultures and places in which French is spoken. Major emphasis is on the conversational skills of listening and speaking. A passing grade in French I is pre-requisite for French II.

Prerequisite: Spanish I or the equivalent Building on Spanish I concepts, Spanish II students learn to communicate more confidently about themselves, as well as about topics beyond their own lives - both in formal and informal situations. Each lesson presents vocabulary, grammar, and culture in context, followed by explanations and exercises. Students expand their vocabulary in topics such as cooking, ecology, geography, and architecture. forms, an introduction to the past tense, the conditional mood, imperatives, impersonal constructions, and reported speech. Students deepen their knowledge of Spanish-speaking regions and cultures by learning about history, literature, culture, and contemporary issues. Develops scientific knowledge and skills pertaining to productions of agricultural crops. Combines landscaping and turf management curriculum. These courses introduce the student to the principles, theories, and concepts of Automotive

Technology, and include instruction in the maintenance and light repair of Engines, Brake

Systems, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Suspension and Steering Systems, Automatic and

Manual Transmission/Transaxles, and Engine Performance Systems. In all areas, appropriate

theory, safety, and support instruction will be taught and required for performing each task,

including proper care and cleaning of customers vehicles. The instruction will also include

identification and use of appropriate tools and testing/measurement equipment required to

accomplish certain tasks. The student will also receive the necessary training to locate and use

current reference and training materials from accepted industry publications and resources, and

BLUEPRINT READING/CONSTRUCTION: 10TH – 12TH Grade - 1 credit Provides a series of lectures, demonstrations and practice exercises in study of symbols, views and sections. Students will learn medical terminology. They will also Prepare First Aid Kits and have the opportunity to receive their CPR Certification. In this class you get to work hands on a lot. NURSE ASSISTANT AIDE I: (Year Long Class) Dual Credit-Must have C Avg or above 11TH – 12TH Grade - 2 credits

Students go to the Nursing Home and volunteer. Must have two 8 hr. days for their clinical hours and 59 hours lecture. This is mandated by Nursing State Law. Also, will practice their procedures on the manikins and learn how to use the equipment. This class doesn’t cost anything as a high school student but if you wait and take it after graduating it will cost around $300-$400 at a community college. This could really help you decide if this is the right career for you. CNA Certification is mandatory for those interested in pursuing a RN degree.

This course provides opportunities for students with an interest in teaching to develop skills,

strategies, and techniques used for instruction at various grade levels. Instruction addresses the

principles and procedures for promoting the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual

development of children, adolescents and developmentally appropriate practices in educational

settings. Students will gain work experience in classrooms with certified teachers as part of their

course work. Other components include the development of a four-year post-secondary plan,

This hands-on course applies publishing and presentation concepts through the development of sophisticated business documents and projects. These documents include, but are not limited to, tri-fold brochures, manuscripts, reports, bi-fold programs, catalogs, newsletters, flyers, business forms, graphs, web pages, on-screen presentations, and video productions. Equipment such as scanners, digital cameras,

SMAW Open Groove Lab: 10th – 12th Grade – 1 credit Designed to build upon SMAW Plate Lab I and II. Offers the student the opportunity to advance

skills in the practical aspects of vee-butt plate welding using SMAW.

WOOD PRO: 9TH – 12TH Grade - 1 credit

Fundamentals of wood processing and overview of secondary wood processing industry. The nature of wood, material selection, terminology, safe setup and operation of common woodworking equipment. Each student will fabricate a wood product while being introduced to custom woodworking techniques, as well as, mass production concepts related to product engineering. Pre-requisite: None

Fundamentals of multi-view and pictorial drafting techniques. Reading and interpreting architectural, furniture and cabinet drawings. Students will apply blueprint reading skills by preparing materials and cutting list for actual jobs. Course is an overview of contemporary spray finishing materials and processes for millwork assemblies. Pre-requisite: Must have Intro Class & Tech Draw/Wood Finish:

Overview of cabinet and store fixture industries. Emphasis will be placed on design and construction of face frame and frameless systems. Each student will plan and build a vanity, kitchen cabinet or store fixture which utilized contemporary casework techniques. FURNITURE TECHNOLOGY: 10TH – 12TH Grade - 1 credit Pre-requisite: Must have Intro & Tech Draw/Wood Finish)

Furniture design principles, structural considerations, joinery, fasteners, veneering and use of specialized machines for complex operations. Each student will plan and build a piece of furniture which include at least one drawer, a door and some veneering. Advanced Wood Processing: 10th – 12th Grade – 1 credit

This course is a capstone experience for advanced wood processing technicians involving the integration of computer aided design and world-class manufacturing of wood products
