Dear Friends & Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to present you with the edUtorium Course Catalogue for January - June 2010. In this catalogue, you will find a comprehensive blend of programmes that aim to advance and enhance your teaching and learning experiences in higher education. We have specially designed some of the courses to provide opportunities for administrative leaders, faculty members, learning designers and researchers to discuss blended learning in higher education. Through it all, we believe that effective sharing will advance teaching and learning to greater heights.

In an era in which technology seems to determine the speed and volume at which knowledge can be acquired, technology-enhanced learning has become almost a necessity to teach more effectively. However, pedagogical guidance is vital if technology is to be productive for human learning. To harness the potential of technology and create an authentic learning experience for our student learners, we would have to almost inevitably consider "blending" in teaching our curriculum. Hence, we have an array of courses which focuses on both pedagogy and ICT such as 'Choosing the Right Blends for Your Learners: Blending Online Technologies for Enhanced Learning Experience' and 'Designing Meaningful Learning in Technology-Enabled Lessons' to equip us in the area of blended learning.

It is important that learners are equipped with 21 st Century Skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving strategies, creativity and entrepreneurial thinking, and the ability to function well as a member of a team. A series of courses including 'CREATIF Thinking', 'Creating Effective Authentic Learning Experiences with Problem-based Learning' and 'Social-Emotional Learning Pedagogies' has also been organized to cater to such needs.

Building online learning activities that effectively meet desired learning outcomes while engaging students is really not as difficult as many believe. The Learning Activities Management System (LAMS) focuses on allowing our pedagogy to drive the technology. It allows the instructor to think about the instructional design, using its intuitive drag-and-drop interface to create learning sequences that focus on learning outcomes.

Thinking about Learning Design LAMS brings learning design to a new level; it helps instructors move away from creating single-user, self-paced learning objects, to thinking about creating sequences of learning activities, involving groups of students, working collaboratively in a structured online environment. Equally important is the fact that these sequences are easy to build, easy to modify, easy to deploy, and easy to re-use.

The various tools that are available in LAMS can be broadly categorized into 4 areas:

• Informative (TelifTeach) • Evaluative (Test) • Collaborative (Talk) • Reflective (Think)

Within each of these areas, there are many tools that LAMS offers which can help present content effectively and also provide avenues for active engagement for enhanced student learning. Incorporated are features like Chat, Forums, Q & A, Multiple Choice, Spreadsheet, Gmap, Wiki, Survey, Resource Sharing, File Submission and much more.

To track students' progress, LAMS has a built-in Monitor that allows the instructor to see how well each student has progressed through the learning sequence and to export the results for printing or analysis.

About the Workshops The Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching in Nanyang Technological University is a certified regional training centre for LAMS. The workshops that are conducted here offer participants the opportunity to explore how the various tools can help them create meaningful and pedagogically sound learning sequences for their students. Two workshops are offered at this stage:

The Basic Workshop introduces participants to the features and functionalities within LAMS, focusing on learning activities built upon learning outcomes. It will also introduce the participant to the Monitor, where student progress is tracked.

The Advanced Workshop is designed for the more-seasoned user of LAMS who wants to extend his learning design to include group activities, conditional branching, optional sequences and other advanced settings.

The Certificate in Teaching for Higher Education (CTHE) aims to enhance and develop the teaching skills of our faculty members so that they can meet the challenges of the changing paradigm in teaching and learning at NTU. The following components will constitute the 100 hours of the programme:

• Teaching and Learning in Higher Education • Enhancing Instruction using ICT • Communication for Teaching and Learning • Assessment in Higher Education

The programme, organised and co-ordinated by the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELl), will be conducted by faculty members from the National Institute of Education (NIE).

The programme is divided into two parts (50 hours each): • Part 1: Communication and Teaching and Learning in Higher Education • Part 2: Technology-Enhanced Instruction and Assessment in Higher Education

Participants will receive a certificate of attendance upon completion of Part 1. If they also complete Part 2, participants will receive a certificate in Teaching for Higher Education from NIE.

The details for each part are listed below:

PART 1: Communication and Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (50 hours) By the end of this 50 hour module participants should:

• Have an enhanced understanding of the intricacies of the communication process in a teaching and learning environment • Have been exposed to and had the opportunity to incorporate into their lecture materials, strategies and techniques for

developing rapport, encouraging student involvement and delivering information effectively • Have developed a greater understanding of current practices at university level that enhance undergraduate learning • Have been exposed to and had the opportunity to incorporate into their lecture materials, elements of design and usage

that can improve the effectiveness of visual aids in lectures, primarily PowerPoint slides

Note: The communication component focuses on using communication in effective pedagogy. It is not designed to deal with basic issues such as grammar, pronunciation or vocabulary topics.

PART 2: Technology-Enhanced Instruction and Assessment in Higher Education (50 hours) This component of the programme will focus on Technology-Enhanced Instruction and Assessment in higher education. It will build on and utilise appropriate topics developed in Part 1.

The practice of instructional design is strongly process-oriented. Best practices in this field are typically based on well-conceived processes that serve as frameworks for successes. Without a process, design and development activities become fragmented, making it difficult to see the trees from the forest. CTHE (Part 2) provides the participants with a firm grounding in the key processes of instructional design as applied to e-Learning.

The course will take on a blended approach of face-to-face and online delivery methods. Participants will be required to complete a practical project involving a conversion of traditional teaching materials into an e-Iearning format as a form of an assessment. This project will be supported by facilitators from the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to: • Design effective e-Iearning activities which enhance the teaching and learning experience • Create appropriate online resources which extend the learning experience • Provide effective online support which facilitates the online learning experience • Use appropriate instructional approaches and strategies which motivate and engage learners • Understand how to confidently conceive of and utilize instructional software toolkits to enable the

teaching and learning experience

4() Most Mispronounced English Words in Singapore (Part 1) [Course Code: CMS008]

Synopsis It's obvious that the standard of English in Singapore has deteriorated to such an extent that Singlish, which is a hybrid comprising words and expressions drawn from Mandarin, Chinese dialects and Malay, is posing a danger to our ability to be understood beyond our shores.

Singlish will not only hurt our ability to communicate effectively with Standard English speakers but it will compromise Singapore's position as one of Asia's leading economic powerhouses and our standing as an international conference and exhibition venue. Singlish speakers mispronounce so many words that understanding them can be difficult. There is an urgent need to address this problem and the time is NOW!

Many Standard English speakers and foreigners think Singlish is the lingua franca of the less educated. This hurts our international image and it reflects badly on us. Change must start somewhere. Let it begin with you.

A thematic approach has been adopted. It is not necessary to attend the courses in a Part 1, 2, 3, 4 sequence. Each Part is an independent entity.

Knowing Mel Knowing You [Course Code: CMSOOS]

This one-day workshop is designed to increase our awareness

of the varied cultures around us, the differences and similarities

between cultures and how they impact our relationships with one another. Working in today's global environment, there is a

critical need for each of us to reflect and to understand ourselves

and the cultural influences that have shaped us into who we are today. Only in understanding ourselves are we able to better

understand and appreciate others around us.

The workshop will address key inter-cultural issues faced by the

participants and will focus on the development of skills needed to manage people in a cross-cultural work environment.

Course Objectives The workshop aims to:

• Heighten awareness of the diversity of cultures and cultural sensitivities among the students and colleagues within

the workforce

• Provide an opportunity for self-reflection to understand how culture influences our decision-making and

communication styles

• Enable participants to better integrate and collaborate more effectively with others even when opinions and

Noise is anything physical, psychological or semantic that can

interfere with communication - which is the heart of learning. To be perceived as an effective instructor, it is essential that the

instructor reduces to a minimum noise-inducing behaviours -

those which disrupt students' attention; distract them from the

core elements of explanations; diminish their motivation to engage; lead to their doubt, conflict, or confusion; and eventually

reduce their capacity to engage fully in the learning or to their

failure to learn effectively.

As it happens, a great deal is known from both research and

experience about what helps overcome 'noise', what helps

students engage in learning, and about what makes for effective teaching. Most of it does not require innate teaching ability or

a particular type of personality, but involves a combination of

ask himself the key questions: How do we learn? How can we

maximize the learning process of those who learn?

In psychology, the term 'learning' is defined as a relatively

permanent change in behaviour or the behavioural potential

resulting from an experience. During the education process,

'learning' refers much more to the acquisition and integration of new knowledge in order to reuse it functionally in the personal

and professional realm. And in all educational environments, the

learning process comes mainly from a formal educational

approach, so much so that a good learning process is linked to good teaching. A good teacher who questions his methods

and approaches is undoubtedly very sound and sane.

Nevertheless it is possible that the questions one may be asking,

however pertinent, may be incomplete, i.e., that only one aspect

of the entire mechanism involved in the learning process is addressed. The learning process is fundamentally cognitive and

we sometimes conclude that where a student is struggling to

learn, the problem must be cognitive in nature. Several clues,

scientific and intuitive, lend to the belief that emotions may explain not just a part of the learning difficulties encountered

but also the learning successes as well. A true learning process

does not involve only the 'cognitive' but also the 'emotional'

brain.

Getting Into Web 2.0 -The Read-Write Web


This practical workshop has educators in mind and is simply

designed to remove the mysteries associated with Web 2.0

technologies and introduce the participants to a suite of core

Web 2.0 Tools. During this workshop, participants will be given

the opportunity to gain a valuable and practical introduction to

the core tools of the Read-Write Web.

Course Outline

Participants will be given the opportunity to create and set up

an education blog using tools such as Blogger. Each participant

will be given a detailed insight of the settings and management

of the blog. Following the creation of the blog participants will

be taught how to set up a simple yet very useful image repository

using Flickr or Picasa. The participants will also be guided through

the creation and use of a both a DeLicio.us and Twitter account.

The final component of the workshop will illustrate how these

tools can be linked together via the newly created blog. The day

will conclude with a reflection and evaluation.
