A smart choice for career-changers or current health workers seeking more meaningful work, the course is custom-designed to prepare you to work in the emerging allied health sector. Allied health is expected to boom in the coming years. This is due in part to demand from Australia’s ageing population for therapeutic and program-related support such as physiotherapy assistance.

This practical online or correspondence course is offered through Open Colleges’ partnership with the specialist Integrated Care & Management Training (ICMT). It will prepare you for a wide variety of roles in allied health assistance, while introducing you to the specialist skills needed to deliver exercise programs and support physiotherapy treatments. A work placement will help you build your contacts and your readiness for work.

Start the course any day and study at your own pace in your own time. You’ll enjoy access to the OpenSpace online learning platform and Open Colleges’ renowned student support. You will also be eligible for professional recognition as a physiotherapy assistant member of the prestigious Australian Physiotherapy Association. When you successfully complete the course, you will earn a nationally recognised qualification that could lead to a range of roles in settings such as rehabilitation, acute and aged care, or to further studies in allied health or nursing.

Give yourself a dual advantage in the healthcare job market with a qualification that provides both broad-based health training and specialist skills in physiotherapy.

Why is work placement required? Thiscourserequiresyoutocomplete160hoursofwork placement. Work placement is required to ensure that you are able to demonstrate and apply in an industry context what you have learnt. Work placement also provides insight into particular job roles and responsibilities. You can find out if this is the right industry for you and whether you are right for this industry. Undertaking a work placement also ensures the relevance of learning and assessment tasks and helps to produce graduates who are job ready, thereby increasing employment opportunities.

Work placement must be undertaken in an organisation that is suitable for the course and you must be under the direction of an appropriately experienced supervisor.

It is your responsibility to identify a potential organisation for your work placement. An Open Colleges assessor will assess the organisation to determine if it is able to provide the required resources and supervision. You will not be able to complete work placement in an organisation that has not been approved by Open Colleges.

Workplace assessments will be conducted by Open Colleges workplace assessors. Assessors will work with both the organisation and you to arrange mutually convenient times to undertake assessment activities.

About Allied HealthAllied health is an emerging industry sector and job roles for allied health workers are expected to steadily increase as health professionals require more skilled assistants to support the demands of their workload, due in part to an ageing population. As the need for specialist care increases, health care facilities look for employees with the right qualifications. Allied health is a term that covers all the professions involved in health care, apart from doctors and nurses. These professions may include physiotherapy, speech pathology, pharmacy, nutrition and dietetics, occupational therapy, podiatry and rehabilitation.

With the increase of the allied health assistant workforce within Australia over recent years in response to workforce demands, the development of a Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance (specialising in Physiotherapy) recognised the increasing sophistication in the allied health assistant skill level.

In the workplace This qualification covers workers who provide therapeutic and program-related support to allied health professionals. The worker is required to conduct therapeutic and program-related activities under the guidance of an allied health professional.Supervisionmaybedirect, indirectorremoteand must occur within organisational requirements.

Allied health assistants work under the delegation, monitoring and supervision of allied health professionals. They assist in the provision of a range of services including: inpatients, ambulatory care, rehabilitation, outpatients, aged care and community (paediatric and adult).

Their work setting may include hospitals, community health centres, schools and clients’ homes. Whilst some allied health assistants only work within one discipline, many assistants work across disciplines, providing assistance to multiple health professionals. Work opportunities exist in the public and private sectors in the following areas:

· Hospital services · Rehabilitation services · Community health services · Private practice

· NGO health services

·Sportsservices

· Primary health services

· Volunteer services.
