Camas Library - Bits & BytesThe Camas County Public Library has many

new books for patrons to check out. Two espe-cially stand out because they are something a differ-

ent and could in a sense be called charming and endear-ing. These books are a series written by Patrick Taylor (M.

D.) who was born and raised in Bangor County Down in North-ern Ireland. Although they are works of fiction, his books arebased on journals he kept of his early days in rural Ireland.

Our library has the first two books: An Irish Country Doc-tor followed by An Irish Country Village. The town isBallybucklebo and two of the main characters are Barry Laverty,M.M. an assistant to Dr. Fingal Flahertie O’Reilly. They treatthe many eccentric and colorful characters of the town andsurrounding area. These books are great reads that keep youturning pages written in a style akin to James Herriot.

Don’t Forget The Supplemental Levy ElectionOn March 12th.

The 2013-2014 school year will present an even greaterchallenge to maintain our current commitment to educate ourmost precious asset, and in many ways the future, the childrenof Camas County. The slow economic recovery and the desta-bilization of State of Idaho revenue have created great chal-lenges for the Joint Finance and Appropriation Committee andtheir ability to adequately fund Idaho’s public education system. At this time the Idaho FY 2014 Public School Appropriation hasnot been set, but early indicators are showing that the PublicSchool Appropriation will still be far below the appropriation asfar back as 2009.

Let me assure you that our elected School Board membershave been involved in the planning and management of the dis-trict. The Board of Trustees is very aware that Camas CountySchool District is a district with limited financial resources and aconcentrated effort is being made to make each and every taxdollar stretch as far as possible. Like many of you, we arecommitted to do more with less. That is why this year’s supple-mental levy is asking for no more than you have approved in thepast. That’s right, even though we are receiving far less statesupport than we have received in previous years, this supple-mental levy will be for the same amount that you approved twoyears ago. Approval of the supplemental levy will not increaseyour taxes over this year’s levy rate.

Once again, rest assured that the Camas County SchoolDistrict will do everything in our power to not undermine oureducational programs, including extra-curricular activities.

For the Board,Jim Cobble, Superintendent of Schools

What is this librarian reading these days?New: Behind Beautiful Forever – Katherine Boo

I have written that I love a story that pulls me in and “Be-hind Beautiful Forever – Life Death and Hope in the MumbaiUndercity” did that alright. It really, REALLY pulled me in, itpulled me in and it pulled me down and I wanted out! I havenever been so disgusted by a culture, by a society, by peoplewithout a single trait of humanity. Page after page, one horribleevent after another, I kept flipping back to the bio to see if myeyes were deceiving me – this was a documentary. These eventsand people were not the product of some deeply disturbed writer, but actual events, the characters even used their real names. No, no! This is child abuse worse than Slum Dog Millionaire, this is matricide, homicide, animal abuse, everything horrible thatcould happen did happen. Because the title assured me it wasLife, Death and Hope, I assumed that the final chapter wouldredeem these completely damaged people, and that Hope wouldsurface. Forget it.

Cup of Tee©

Tee Hurd

Last week I told you that I had acouple of books to give away for the

tractor and equipment class I was teaching aspart of the “Living on the Land” class I am a part of .

To give better visuals, I figured I would take some tractors toclass. My old Farmall H is a good tractor to show for opera-tions of the 1950’s and 1960’s. It is a prime example of theworking system of the time whereas the farm families utilizedtheir tractors even with horse drawn equipment.

The old “H” had two tires low on air, a dead battery andbad gasoline (gas was past its’ two month life expectancy!) Soto take it to class, I basically had to hand winch the tractoronto my trailer. I spent about an hour winching the tractor onwith a short come-along. With flat tires, it was quite a drag toget the tractor in loaded position.

Even more so, was the fact that Tee was out of air, handcranking the tractor. Within a few moments of sitting, Teerecharged with air. If I had some air in my tractor tires, then Iprobably wouldn’t have used all of my own.

I took the tractor to class and as I passed a new tire storefacility. I thought I might air up the “H” so I could unload iteasier. The store was called Discount Tire. It wasn’t my usualLes Schwab, but air is air. I pulled the pickup and trailer rightup in front of the big shop doors. I got out of my pickup anda gentleman, apparently the one in charge, met me outside. Itold him, “I would like to rotate the air in the tractor tires. “ Helooked at me like I was crazy. Maybe he didn’t understandmy humor. So then I said, “I need to put a little air in thesetractor tires! I have a couple that are low.”

The response from the manager type person was “Sorry, but we don’t have anyone certified to put air in tractor tires.”For a second, I was lost. I replied with query, “You are a tirestore and you don’t have anyone that is qualified to put air inmy tractor tires? That is the craziest thing I have ever heardof. Bring me the hose and I’ll do it myself” His immediatereply was, “We are not insured to do that either.”

By this time, I really felt I wasn’t welcome there and said,”I can’t believe what I’m hearing. I guess I will go down theroad where I can get some air.”

I probably won’t be buying any tires from that group ofdiscount tire sellers and I am still puzzled that in an agriculturecommunity that tractors’ can’t get air. I guess they must havesome automated tire system where they don’t actually humanlydo the services.

Last week I wrote to you about bubble wrap and lettingthe air out of things. I didn’t know I would be writing aboutputting air back into my story.

This is my inflated “Cup of Tee.”

Katherine Boo’s documentary is written in novel form and itreads like a novel from Hell itself. It does what a novel is sup-posed to do – it pulls you in and holds you captive. I could notput it down. Fortunately, it’s only a few hundred pages so thatthe moment I closed the back cover and left the slum of Mumbai,I took a long hot cleansing bath and reveled in my good luck tolive in Gooding Idaho.

------------------------------Classic: The Big Rock Candy Mountain – Wallace Stegner

Mr. Stegner has never written a book that didn’t totally in-volve me emotionally, he’s a writer who can make me forget tovacuum and make me lie in a bubble-bath gone cold while I turnpage after page. That’s how good he is. The Big Rock CandyMountain is his own story of and it is yet another tale of rottenparenting which I am coming to understand either makes thekid brilliant or criminal – or both. It made Wallace brilliant. Hemade me hate his father from the get-go, he made me want toslap his mother and yell “wake-up dumbbell”. His descriptionsof farming and ranching were like a conservationist’s tell-all butthis is no farm family – from poverty shacks on the Canadianplains to city slums in Los Angeles, the mystery is why thesepeople stayed together as a family. The Big Rock Candy Moun-tain is like a big lasagna, layer after layer of texture, flavor andmeat – and totally worth the effort.

Out of the Sagebrush& Back Again

Westward Ho! Thousands of pioneers trekked across thehigh plains, rugged mountains, and high desert steppes to reachthe Pacific Coast, but few found Idaho worthy of settlement. As one pioneer voiced in his journal, Idaho was "an ugly, semi-arid wasteland of sagebrush and lava rock." Idaho''s true poten-tial wasn''t realized until the Carey Act of 1894 allowed privatecapital to build dams and irrigation projects. As entrepreneursheaded west to capitalize on Idaho''s "liquid gold," land specula-tors followed. These speculators developed townsites in hopesof enticing easterners to move west. At one time the MagicValley boasted nearly 80 of these sites! Learn the remarkablestory of those who did their best to take Idaho "out of the sage-brush."
