Producers in areas that have experienced heavy rains may have concerns about nitrogen loss incorn fields. Nitrogen losses occur by two main pathways: denitrification (gaseous loss of N) andleaching of nitrate from soil through water leav-ing the tile line or into groundwater. An estimatecan made on the loss potential, which is basedon N source, time of application, soil tempera-ture, and number of days that soils have re-mained saturated.Most nitrogen that is lost from a field is in thenitrate form during wet conditions. Time of trans-formation to nitrate is dependent on the type of N fertilizer applied. Anhydrous ammonia is lesssusceptible to loss since it converts to nitraterather slowly. Urea-ammonium nitrate (UAN) solution has about 25% as nitrate at application timehas a greater risk for loss than anhydrous.Soils have been warm enough that some transformation to nitrate may have already occurred thisyear depending on application date. However, the nitrate N will not be lost by denitrification unless
soils have remained saturated long enough. Risk of loss is minimal for soils that remain saturated forone day, moderate risk for two days of saturation, and a substantial risk for three or more days of saturated conditions. Standing water is evidence of saturated soils, but even soil s without standingwater are considered saturated if an individual cannot walk across without making footprints .So the factors are: What N product was used. When was it applied. Soil moisture content. How faralong is the crop. Re-application could be considered, but not i f the crop is well advanced.

AL FRESCO – A FABULOUS DINNER UNDER THESTARS. On Saturday, July 25, Salem Courthouse CommunityCenter celebrates its 13th Al Fresco Dinner. This popular event is
a quality experience that comes together as a result of a dedicatedbroad community effort. Each July, people from near and far gather
to celebrate all the good this r ich agrarian region has to offer. At 5pm, folks start to assemble on the side lawn surrounded by majestic
hills and verdant countryside. Crisp white tents radiate from thehistoric old building like spokes protecting linen-covered tables lush
with local flowers and charmingly mismatched china.While sipping wine and reaching out to friends, guests enjoy a
sumptuous selection of local artisan cheeses. Widely knowncreameries including 3 Corner Field Farm, Argyle Cheese Farmer,
Consider Bardwell Farm, Cabot, Longview Farm and Sweet SpringFarm provide the assorted cheeses for which this event has become
synonymous. Cheeses made from cow, sheep and goat’s milk areoffered on 3 large tables enhanced by glorious large-scale floral
arrangements. The popular Roadhouse Rhythm and Blues Bandwill lure dancers to their feet with their horn-driven sound. Graceful
large-scale sculpture on loan from artists at Salem Art Worksprovides points of interest on the side lawn. This year’s Great Hall
exhibit will focus on the Civil War in keeping with the many eventscommemorating the 150th anniversary of the end of the war. A

ARGYLE 4TH OF JULY PARADE- The Argyle J. A. Barkley Hose Co. Auxiliary is making plansor the annual Independence Day Parade. The parade will be held on Saturday, July 4, at 11:00 a.m.
The theme for this year’s parade is “PROUD TO BE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE” . TheAuxiliary urges area families, churches, organizations and businesses to participate by entering floats
nd/or marching units. Entry forms are needed for placement and for judging in the parade line-up.We would also like to encourage our youth to enter the bicycle competition. No entry forms areeeded for this category, but we do need to stress that helmets are required for all participants.
As always, there will be 1s t, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes for floats and bicycles based on the use of theheme. For entry forms or if there are any questions, call 638-8667. Following the parade at 12:30here will be a chicken BBQ where they will be serving the Argyle Firefighters’ famous BBQ chickent the firehouse on State Route 40. The Argyle Senior Citizens will be holding a dessert sale at the
United Methodist Church on Sheridan St. and the Library will be holding its annual book sale, also onheridan St. Come show your patriotism and join in the fun!
POLO AND CLASSIC CARS: The Salem Volunteer Fire Department Inc. will be sponsoring acombined Polo match and a classic/antique car fund raising event to be held on Saturday August 1, atthe Surya Polo Club at the intersection of NYS Rte 29 and Christie Rd in the town of Greenwich, NY12834. GEARING UP FOR THEIR ANNUAL 3 DAY JULY 4TH
2015 ACTIVITIES.
The theme for the parade this year will be: 123rd Regiment CivilWar Homecoming. The carnival will start at 6pm on ThursdayJuly 2nd and Friday July 3rd at the carnival grounds onArchibald St off from NYS RTE 22. Stop by and try some of thedelicious food that will be served or try your luck at one of themany games for kids or adul ts. Also try your luck at winning bybuying a raffle ticket for one of the many donated prizes. WillLinendoll will DJ on July 2nd & 3rd and Krystal’s Lytle DJ Ser-vice will DJ on the 4th. On Saturday July 4th our parade line-upstarts at 4pm at the Holy Cross church on North Main St (RTE22). The parade will start at 5pm sharp and will go down MainSt. to Park Place to the carnival grounds on Archibald St.As usual we are looking for a lot of floats for the parade, so if you belong to a group, organization, or just a family put your think-ing caps on and start designing your float, because that is whatmakes up a parade along with a lot of music whether on a float ormarching.There will be awards for the floats that come closest to the theme.On July 4th at 9:30 pm there will be a large fireworks display

The Federal Convention convened in the State House(Independence Hall) in Philadelphia on May 14, 1787, torevise the Articles of Confederation. Because the del-egations from only two states were at first present, themembers adjourned from day to day until a quorum of
seven states was obtained on May 25. Through discus-sion and debate it became clear by mid-June that, ratherthan amend the existing Articles, the Convention woulddraft an entirely new frame of government. All throughthe summer, in closed sessions, the delegates debated,and redrafted the articles of the new Constitution. Amongthe chief points at issue were how much power to allowthe central government, how many representatives inCongress to allow each state, and how these representa-tives should be elected--directly by the people or by thestate legislators. The work of many minds, the Constitu-tion stands as a model of freedom for individuals underthe rule of law.

MORE PERFECT UNION: THE CREATION OF THEU.S. CONSTITUTION May 25, 1787, Freshly spread dirtcovered the cobblestone street in front of the PennsylvaniaState House, protecting the men inside from the sound of passing carriages and carts. Guards stood at the entrances toensure that the curious were kept at a distance. Robert Mor-ris of Pennsylvania, the "financier" of the Revolution, openedthe proceedings with a nomination--Gen. George Washingtonfor the presidency of the Constitutional Convention. Thevote was unanimous. The general expressed his embarrass-ment at his lack of qualifications to preside over such anaugust body and apologized for any errors into which hemight fall in the course of its deliberations.
The Father of our Country had almostremained at home. Instead, he helpedcreate a more perfect union.
Ratification. By January 9, 1788, five states of the nine neces-sary for ratification had approved the Constitution--Delaware,Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut. But theeventual outcome remained uncertain in pivotal states such asMassachusetts, New York, and Virginia. On February 6,withFederalists agreeing to recommend a list of amendmentsamounting to a bill of rights, Massachusetts ratified by a voteof 187 to 168. Al though Massachusetts was now safely in theFederalist column, the recommendation of a bill of rights wasa significant victory for the anti-Federalists. Six of the remain-ing states later appended similar recommendations. The United
States Constitution was signed on Sep-tember 17, 1787. It was ratified by ninestates in July of 1988. By December1791 the “Bill of Rights” was ratifiedby 3/4 of the states.

When James Madison helped shape a new constitutional system for the US, he and his fellowframers had one overriding fear: tyranny.They divided power among three branches: Legislative, Judicial and Administrative and createdlines of separation that would prevent concentration of power in any one branch. Understandinghuman nature, they tried to create a system in which ambition would check ambition. However,they knew that citizens could be deceived into giving up their freedoms. Madison warned futuregenerations that “if tyranny and oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting aforeign enemy.” They knew how effective fear can be used to induce citizens to relinquish theirliberties. Recent years have proven them, once again, prophetic in their warnings.The constitution is intended as a protection of individual rights, by preventing one branch fromassuming power, enough power to become tyrannical. No branch was given enough power togovern alone. Checks and balances were established to prevent that event. Once power becomesconcentrated in the hands of a president, citizens are left only with the assurance that suchunchecked power will be used wisely. This event the framers repeatedly warned us to never accept.Benjamin Franklin said it best when he warned that they who would give up essential Liberty, topurchase a little temporary Safety, will receive neither Liberty nor Safety.Despite these warnings, many people have embraced largely unchecked presidential powers under
the assurance that the rising security state will keep them safe. The shift of power to the presi-dency certainly did not start with the current president. The trend has been gaining ground fordecades. But, this administration has accelerated the troubling trend, seemingly without objectionfrom the other two branches. This has created a very dangerous situation.For instance, warrantless surveillance has increased under this Presidency. War without declarationwas subverted in Libya because the current president declared only he has the right to define war.(See the trickery here? He defines war, then the Congress gets to declare it. If an action is notdefined by the president as war, the Congress has no authority regarding that action. A basic tenantof our Constitution boldly discarded.) The current president has asserted the right to kill any UScitizen without judicial involvement. (Citizens deemed by his administration to be terrorists) Thecurrent presidency has placed our press corps under surveillance thereby intimidating another of our freedoms, that of the Press. Claiming executive privilege, he has refused to turn over anyinformation to which congress is entitled, regarding a number of scandals. Included in those scan-dals is the vindictive abuse of power in utilizing the IRS as agents of retribution against politicalenemies.Elections have consequences. Seek out those who have established themselves as strict constitu-tionalists and put them in office if you wish to continue enjoying what this great country hasoffered over the past two plus centuries.
