3D scanning of the scale model

By the use of the GOM Atos

scanning system (a system of

high-resolution scan which allows

to capture all the style lines with

the highest level of accuracy) the

scanning of the Mercedes SL

scale model was carried out.

Mathematics Reconstruction

The car 3D model was then

processed using the GOM

software which contributed to

create the polygonal mesh

starting from the points cloud.

Mathematics Reconstruction

From 3D scanning, it was

possible to extrapolate the style

curves to be used for modeling

and subsequent prototyping.

Mathematics 3D Modeling

according to the style

indications provided by the

IAAD Students, STUDIOTORINO

and Mercedes.

Mathematics were modeled by one

of our designers according to the

2D model created by the Turin

IAAD students and under the

supervision of STUDIOTORINO

and Steffen Koehl, Mercedes-Benz

Global Director of Advanced

Design.

The hardest work was definitely

the modeling of the rear of the

vehicle.

The modeling work was carried out

with the maximum care and

attention to every style detail.

Realization of the 1:4 scale

model in stereolithography

The 3D model was then placed

on the stereolithography machine

to be realized in a single piece.

Our stereolithography is different

from the others for the following

reasons:

a. Placement

b. Material

c. Size

Placement

The 3D model is placed in

machine in order to create the

smallest possible number of

supports so as to require a

minimum manual finishing.

Material

Our stereolithography models are

made with a unique material: the

New White.

The New White Stereolithography

is stronger than the standard

stereolithography and it was

developed by Skorpion especially

for large prototypes.

Size

Skorpion owns a

stereolithography machine able to

produce monolithic pieces up to

2000x1000x1000 mm with the

great advantage of avoiding

assembly and bonding of multiple

pieces for the realization of large

size particulars.

Rough model

From the pictures you can see

how the model (as realized by the

machine) appears with an

excellent level of quality and

results suitable for any type of

finish.

Finished Model

This is the finish chosen for the

presentation of the model.

Skorpion Engineering is able to

finish the prototypes with different

types of materials ranging from

wood to carbon and from classical

metallization to the innovative

Metal Plating.

Metal Plating is a special

technology that gives the effect of

the metal to plastic not only to

view, but also to the touch.
